A Nekrasov-Okounkov type formula for type C
In 2008, Han rediscovered an expansion of powers of Dedekind $η$ function due to Nekrasov and Okounkov by using Macdonald's identity in type $\widetilde{A}$. In this paper, we obtain new combinatorial expansions of powers of $η$, in terms of partition hook lengths, by using Macdonald's identity in type $\widetilde{C}$ and a new bijection. As applications, we derive a symplectic hook formula and a relation between Macdonald's identities in types $\widetilde{C}$, $\widetilde{B}$, and $\widetilde{BC}$.

Generalized Dyck tilings
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 51 (2016), 458--474 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Kenyon and Wilson introduced Dyck tilings, which are certain tilings of the region between two Dyck paths. The enumeration of Dyck tilings is related with hook formulas for forests and the combinatorics of Hermite polynomials. The first goal of this work is to give an alternative point of view on Dyck tilings by making use of the weak order and the Bruhat order on permutations. Then we introduce two natural generalizations: $k$-Dyck tilings and symmetric Dyck tilings. We are led to consider Stirling permutations, and define an analog of the Bruhat order on them. We show that certain families of $k$-Dyck tilings are in bijection with intervals in this order. We also enumerate symmetric Dyck tilings.

Refined enumeration of noncrossing chains and hook formulas
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19(3) (2015), 443--460 • View PublicationBIB
In the combinatorics of finite finite Coxeter groups, there is a simple formula giving the number of maximal chains of noncrossing partitions. It is a reinterpretation of a result by Deligne which is due to Chapoton, and the goal of this article is to refine the formula. First, we prove a one-parameter generalization, by the considering enumeration of noncrossing chains where we put a weight on some relations. Second, we consider an equivalence relation on noncrossing chains coming from the natural action of the group on set partitions, and we show that each equivalence class has a simple generating function. Using this we recover Postnikov's hook length formula in type A and obtain a variant in type B.

An edge-weighted hook formula for labelled trees
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, 5 (2), pp. 245-269, 2014 • Search Publication
A number of hook formulas and hook summation formulas have previously appeared, involving various classes of trees. One of these classes of trees is rooted trees with labelled vertices, in which the labels increase along every chain from the root vertex to a leaf. In this paper we give a new hook summation formula for these (unordered increasing) trees, by introducing a new set of indeterminates indexed by pairs of vertices, that we call edge weights. This new result generalizes a previous result by Féray and Goulden, that arose in the context of representations of the symmetric group via the study of Kerov's character polynomials. Our proof is by means of a combinatorial bijection that is a generalization of the Prüfer code for labelled trees.
Combinatorics of non-ambiguous trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article investigates combinatorial properties of non-ambiguous trees. These objects we define may be seen either as binary trees drawn on a grid with some constraints, or as a subset of the tree-like tableaux previously defined by Aval, Boussicault and Nadeau. The enumeration of non-ambiguous trees satisfying some additional constraints allows us to give elegant combinatorial proofs of identities due to Carlitz, and to Ehrenborg and Steingrímsson. We also provide a hook formula to count the number of non-ambiguous trees with a given underlying tree. Finally, we use non-ambiguous trees to describe a very natural bijection between parallelogram polyominoes and binary trees.

(q,t)-hook formula for Birds and Banners
We study Okada's conjecture on $(q,t)$-hook formula of general $d$-complete posets. Proctor classified $d$-complete posets into 15 irreducible ones. We try to give a case-by-case proof of Okada's $(q,t)$-hook formula conjecture using the symmetric functions. Here we give a proof of the conjecture for birds and banners, in which we use Gasper's identity for VWP-series ${}_{12}W_{11}$.

A multivariate hook formula for labelled trees
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 120 (2013), pp. 944-959 • Search Publication
Several hook summation formulae for binary trees have appeared recently in the literature. In this paper we present an analogous formula for unordered increasing trees of size r, which involves r parameters. The right-hand side can be written nicely as a product of linear factors. We study two specializations of this new formula, including Cayley's enumeration of trees with respect to vertex degree. We give three proofs of the hook formula. One of these proofs arises somewhat indirectly, from representation theory of the symmetric groups, and in particular uses Kerov's character polynomials. The other proofs are more direct, and of independent interest.

A multivariate "inv" hook formula for forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bjoerner and Wachs provided two q-generalizations of Knuth's hook formula counting linear extensions of forests: one involving the major index statistic, and one involving the inversion number statistic. We prove a multivariate generalization of their inversion number result, motivated by specializations related to the modular invariant theory of finite general linear groups.
Generalized hook lengths in symbols and partitions
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, vol 36 (2011), no. 2, pp. 309-332 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present, for any integer d, a description of the set of hooks in a d-symbol. We then introduce generalized hook length functions for a d-symbol, and prove a general result about them, involving the core and quotient of the symbol. We list some applications, for example to the well-known hook lengths in integer partitions. This leads in particular to a generalization of a relative hook formula for the degree of characters of the symmetric group discovered by G. Malle and G. Navarro in [3].

The weighted hook-length formula II: Complementary formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a new weighted generalization of the branching rule for the hook lengths, equivalent to the hook formula, was proved. In this paper, we generalize the complementary branching rule, which can be used to prove Burnside's formula. We present three different proofs: bijective, via weighted hook walks, and via the ordinary weighted branching rule.

Homogeneous Representations of Khovanov-Lauda Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct irreducible graded representations of simply laced Khovanov-Lauda algebras which are concentrated in one degree. The underlying combinatorics of skew shapes and standard tableaux corresponding to arbitrary simply laced types has been developed previously by Peterson, Proctor and Stembridge. In particular, the Peterson-Proctor hook formula gives dimensions of the homogeneous irreducible modules corresponding to straight shapes.

The Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length formula: refinement, elementary proof, extension and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper is devoted to the derivation of the expansion formula for the powers of the Euler Product in terms of partition hook lengths, discovered by Nekrasov and Okounkov in their study of the Seiberg-Witten Theory. We provide a refinement based on a new property of t-cores, and give an elementary proof by using the Macdonald identities. We also obtain an extension by adding two more parameters, which appears to be a discrete interpolation between the Macdonald identities and the generating function for t-cores. Several applications are derived, including the "marked hook formula".

An explicit expansion formula for the powers of the Euler Product in terms of partition hook lengths
We discover an explicit expansion formula for the powers $s$ of the Euler Product (or Dedekind $η$-function) in terms of hook lengths of partitions, where the exponent $s$ is any complex number. Several classical formulas have been derived for certain integers $s$ by Euler, Jacobi, Klein, Fricke, Atkin, Winquist, Dyson and Macdonald. In particular, Macdonald obtained expansion formulas for the integer exponents $s$ for which there exists a semi-simple Lie algebra of dimension $s$. For the type $A_l^{(a)}$ he has expressed the $(t^2-1)$-st power of the Euler Product as a sum of weighted integer vectors of length $t$ for any integer $t$. Kostant has considered the general case for any positive integer $s$ and obtained further properties. ----- The present paper proposes a new approach. We convert the weighted vectors of length $t$ used by Macdonald in his identity for type $A_l^{(a)}$ to weighted partitions with free parameter $t$, so that a new identity on the latter combinatorial structures can be derived without any restrictions on $t$. The surprise is that the weighted partitions have a very simple form in terms of hook lengths of partitions. As applications of our formula, we find some new identities about hook lengths, including the "marked hook formula". We also improve a result due to Kostant. The proof of the Main Theorem is based on Macdonald's identity for $A_l^{(a)}$ and on the properties of a bijection between $t$-cores and integer vectors constructed by Garvan, Kim and Stanton.

A determinant-like formula for the Kostka numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young tableaux are ubiquitous in various branches of mathematics. There are two counting formulas for standard Young tableaux. The first involves a determinant and goes back to Frobenius and Young, and the second is the hook formula by Frame, Robinson and Thrall. We present a generalization of the determinant formula for semistandard Young tableaux of given shape and of given content. Our counting formula -- though not a determinant -- is a generalization of the determinant formula by Frobenius and Young.

Degree Bounds in Quantum Schubert Calculus
Published in Proceedings of the AMS, Volume 131, Number 9, 2649-2655 (2003) • View PublicationBIB
Fulton and Woodward have recently identified the smallest degree of $q$ that appears in the expansion of the product of two Schubert classes in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmannian. We present a combinatorial proof of this result, and provide an alternative characterization of this smallest degree in terms of the rim hook formula for the quantum product.

Another involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 88 (1999), 66-92 • View PublicationBIB
Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux of a given shape. This new algorithm can also be used as an algorithm for the random generation of tableaux of a given shape with bounded entries. An appropriate deformation of this algorithm gives an algorithm for the random generation of plane partitions inside a given box.

Anisotropic Young diagrams and Jack symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Young graph with edge multiplicities arising in a Pieri-type formula for Jack symmetric polynomials $P_μ(x;a)$ with a parameter $a$. Starting with the empty diagram, we define recurrently the `dimensions' $\dim_a$ in the same way as for the Young lattice or Pascal triangle. New proofs are given for two known results. The first is the $a$-hook formula for $\dim_a$, first found by R.Stanley. Secondly, we prove (for all complex $u$ and $v$) a generalization of the identity $\sumν(c(b)+u)(c(b)+v)\dimν/\dimμ=(n+1)(n+uv)$, where $ν$ runs over immediate successors of a Young diagram $μ$ with $n$ boxes. Here $c(b)$ is the content of a new box $b$. The identity is known to imply the existence of an interesting family of positive definite central functions on the infinite symmetric group. The approach is based on the interpretation of a Young diagram as a pair of interlacing sequences, so that analytic techniques may be used to solve combinatorial problems. We show that when dealing with Jack polynomials $P_μ(x;a)$, it makes sense to consider `anisotropic' Young diagrams made of rectangular boxes of size $1\times a$.
