In 2020, Siemons and Zalesski [On the second eigenvalue of some Cayley graphs of the symmetric group. {\it arXiv preprint arXiv:2012.12460}, 2020] determined the second eigenvalue of the Cayley graph $Γ_{n,k} = \operatorname{Cay}(\operatorname{Sym}(n), C(n,k))$ for $k = 0$ and $k=1$, where $C(n,k)$ is the conjugacy class of $(n-k)$-cycles. In this paper, it is proved that for any $n\geq 3$ and $k\in \mathbb{N}$ relatively small compared to $n$, the second eigenvalue of $Γ_{n,k}$ is the eigenvalue afforded by the irreducible character of $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$ that corresponds to the partition $[n-1,1]$. As a byproduct of our method, the result of Siemons and Zalesski when $k \in \{0,1\}$ is retrieved. Moreover, we prove that the second eigenvalue of $Γ_{n,n-5}$ is also equal to the eigenvalue afforded by the irreducible character of the partition $[n-1,1]$.

A character identity which relates irreducible character values of the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ to those of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ was recently proved by Lübeck and Prasad. Their proof is algebraic and involves Lie theory. We present a short combinatorial proof of this identity, as well as a generalization to other wreath products.
Quantum immanants, double Young-Capelli bitableaux and Schur shifted symmetric functions

In this paper are introduced two classes of elements in the enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$: the \emph{double Young-Capelli bitableaux} $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ T$}\ ]$ and the \emph{central} \emph{Schur elements} $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$, that act in a remarkable way on the highest weight vectors of irreducible Schur modules.
Any element $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ is the sum of all double Young-Capelli bitableaux $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ S$}\ ]$, $S$ row (strictly) increasing Young tableaux of shape $\widetildeλ$. The Schur elements $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ are proved to be the preimages - with respect to the Harish-Chandra isomorphism - of the \emph{shifted Schur polynomials} $s_{λ|n}^* \in Λ^*(n)$. Hence, the Schur elements are the same as the Okounkov \textit{quantum immanants}, recently described by the present authors as linear combinations of \emph{Capelli immanants}. This new presentation of Schur elements/quantum immanants doesn't involve the irreducible characters of symmetric groups. The Capelli elements $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ are column Schur elements and the Nazarov-Umeda elements $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$ are row Schur elements. The duality in $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ follows from a combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ on irreducible modules that is {\it{dual}} (in the sense of shapes/partitions) to the combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$.
The passage $n \rightarrow \infty$ for the algebras $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ is obtained both as direct and inverse limit in the category of filtered algebras, via the \emph{Olshanski decomposition/projection}.

Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ be the set of all complex irreducible characters of $G$. The character-graph $Δ(G)$ associated to $G$, is a graph whose vertex set is the set of primes which divide the degrees of some characters in $\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ and two distinct primes $p$ and $q$ are adjacent in $Δ(G)$ if the product $pq$ divides $χ(1)$, for some $χ\in\mathrm{Irr}(G)$. Tong-viet posed the conjecture that if $Δ(G)$ is $k$-regular for some integer $k\geqslant 2$, then $Δ(G)$ is either a complete graph or a cocktail party graph. In this paper, we show that his conjecture is true for all regular character-graphs whose eigenvalues are in the interval $[-2, \infty )$.

A Refinement of the Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule by Descents for Border Strip Tableaux

Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition.
We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we introduce a new statistic for border strip tableaux, extending the classical definition of descents in standard Young tableaux. Curiously, it turns out that our new statistic is very closely related to a descent set for tuples of standard Young tableaux appearing in the quasisymmetric expansion of LLT polynomials given by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr.
On irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra in type $A$

We use vertex operators to compute irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Two general formulas are given for the irreducible characters in terms of those of the symmetric groups or the Iwahori-Hecke algebras in lower degrees. Explicit formulas are derived for the irreducible characters labeled by hooks and two-row partitions. Using duality, we also formulate a determinant type Murnaghan-Nakayama formula and give another proof of Ram's combinatorial Murnaghan-Nakayama formula. As applications, we study super-characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as well as the bitrace of the regular representation and provide a simple proof of the Halverson-Luduc-Ram formula.
Sylow branching coefficients and a conjecture of Malle and Navarro

We prove that a finite group $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ if, and only if, every irreducible character of $G$ appearing in the permutation character $({\bf 1}_P)^G$ with multiplicity coprime to $p$ has degree coprime to $p$. This confirms a prediction by Malle and Navarro from 2012. Our proof of the above result depends on a reduction to simple groups and ultimately on a combinatorial analysis of the properties of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.

The Sato-Tate distributions for genus 2 curves (conjecturally) describe the statistics of numbers of rational points on the curves. In this paper, we explicitly compute the auto-correlation functions of Sato-Tate distributions for genus 2 curves as sums of irreducible characters of symplectic groups. Our computations bring about families of identities involving irreducible characters of symplectic groups $Sp(2m)$ for all $m \in \mathbb Z_{\ge 1}$, which have interest in their own rights.

For a fixed permutation $σ\in S_k$, let $N_σ$ denote the function which counts occurrences of $σ$ as a pattern in permutations from $S_n$. We study the expected value (and $d$-th moments) of $N_σ$ on conjugacy classes of $S_n$ and prove that the irreducible character support of these class functions stabilizes as $n$ grows. This says that there is a single polynomial in the variables $n, m_1, \ldots, m_{dk}$ which computes these moments on any conjugacy class (of cycle type $1^{m_1}2^{m_2}\cdots$) of any symmetric group. This result generalizes results of Hultman and of Gill, who proved the cases $(d,k)=(1,2)$ and $(1,3)$ using ad hoc methods. Our proof is, to our knowledge, the first application of partition algebras to the study of permutation patterns.

Suppose that $χ_λ$ and $χ_μ$ are distinct irreducible characters of the symmetric group $S_n$. We give an algorithm that, in time polynomial in $n$, constructs $π\in S_n$ such that $χ_λ(π)$ is provably different from $χ_μ(π)$. In fact, we show a little more. Suppose $f=χ_λ$ for some irreducible character $χ_λ$ of $S_n$, but we do not know $λ$, and we are given only oracle access to $f$. We give an algorithm that determines $λ$, using a number of queries to $f$ that is polynomial in $n$. Each query can be computed in time polynomial in $n$ by someone who knows $λ$.

Given a finite group $G$, the character graph, denoted by $Δ(G)$, for its irreducible character degrees is a graph with vertex set $ρ(G)$ which is the set of prime numbers that divide the irreducible character degrees of $G$, and with $\{p,q\}$ being an edge if there exist a non-linear $χ\in {\rm Irr}(G)$ whose degree is divisible by $pq$. In this paper, we discuss the influences of cut vertices and eigenvalues of $Δ(G)$ on the group structure of $G$. Recently, Lewis and Meng proved the character graph of each solvable group has at most one cut vertex. Now, we determine the structure of character graphs of solvable groups with a cut vertex and diameter $3$. Furthermore, we study solvable groups whose character graphs have at most two distinct eigenvalues. Moreover, we investigate the solvable groups whose character graphs are regular with three distinct eigenvalues. In addition, we give some lower bounds for the number of edges of $Δ(G)$.
An overview on the bipartite divisor graph for the set of irreducible character degrees

Let $G$ be a finite group. The bipartite divisor graph for the set of irreducible complex character degrees is the undirected graph with vertex set consisting of the prime numbers dividing some character degree and of the non-identity character degrees, where a prime number $p$ is declared to be adjacent to a character degree $m$ if and only if $p$ divides $m$. This graph is bipartite and it encodes two of the most widely studied graphs associated to the character degrees of a finite group: the prime graph and the divisor graph on the set of irreducible character degrees.
The scope of this paper is two-fold. We draw some attention to the bipartite divisor graph for the set of irreducible complex character degrees by outlining the main results that have been proved so far. In this process we improve some of these results and we leave some open problems.
Explicit Combinatorial Formulas for Some Irreducible Characters of the $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-module of multivariate diagonal harmonics
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for some irreducible components of $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-modules of multivariate diagonal harmonics. To this end we introduce a new path combinatorial object $T_{n,s}$ allowing us to give the formula directly in terms of Schur functions. This paper also contains formulas written in terms of Schur functions in the $q$ and $t$ variables for special cases of $\nabla(e_n)$, $\nabla^r(e_n)$ and $Δ'_{e_k}(e_n)$. We also give an interpretation in term of path to the adjoint dual Pieri rule applied on these $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-characters.

We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ and between characters of ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We identify the first family as a one-parameter specialization of Koornwinder polynomials, for which we thus provide a novel combinatorial structure; on the other hand, the second family appears to be new. We next develop a method of Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern decomposition to establish identities between all these polynomials that, in the case of irreducible characters, can be viewed as branching rules. Through these formulas we connect orthogonal and symplectic characters, and more generally the interpolating polynomials, to LPP models with various symmetries, thus going beyond the link with classical Schur polynomials originally found by Baik and Rains (Duke Math. J., 2001). Taking the scaling limit of the LPP models, we finally provide an explanation of why the Tracy-Widom GOE and GSE distributions from random matrix theory admit formulations in terms of both Fredholm determinants and Fredholm Pfaffians.
Surface Words are Determined by Word Measures on Groups

Every word $w$ in a free group naturally induces a probability measure on every compact group $G$. For example, if $w=\left[x,y\right]$ is the commutator word, a random element sampled by the $w$-measure is given by the commutator $\left[g,h\right]$ of two independent, Haar-random elements of $G$. Back in 1896, Frobenius showed that if $G$ is a finite group and $ψ$ an irreducible character, then the expected value of $ψ\left(\left[g,h\right]\right)$ is $\frac{1}{ψ\left(e\right)}$. This is true for any compact group, and completely determines the $\left[x,y\right]$-measure on these groups. An analogous result holds with the commutator word replaced by any surface word.
We prove a converse to this theorem: if $w$ induces the same measure as $\left[x,y\right]$ on every compact group, then, up to an automorphism of the free group, $w$ is equal to $\left[x,y\right]$. The same holds when $\left[x,y\right]$ is replaced by any surface word.
The proof relies on the analysis of word measures on unitary groups and on orthogonal groups, which appears in separate papers, and on new analysis of word measures on generalized symmetric groups that we develop here.

In arXiv:1605.06672 the authors introduced inhomogeneous bases of the ring of symmetric functions. The elements in these bases have the property that they evaluate to characters of symmetric groups. In this article we develop further properties of these bases by proving product and coproduct formulae. In addition, we give the transition coefficients between the elementary symmetric functions and the irreducible character basis.
Character polynomials for two rows and hook partitions
Representation theory of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ has a very distinctive combinatorial flavor. The conjugacy classes as well as the irreducible characters are indexed by integer partitions $λ\vdash n$. We introduce class functions on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ that count the number of certain tilings of Young diagrams. The counting interpretation gives a uniform expression of these class functions in the ring of character polynomials, as defined by \cite{murnaghanfirst}. A modern treatment of character polynomials is given in \cite{orellana-zabrocki}. We prove a relation between these combinatorial class functions in the (virtual) character ring. From this relation, we were able to prove Goupil's generating function identity \cite{goupil}, which can then be used to derive Rosas' formula \cite{rosas} for Kronecker coefficients of hook shape partitions and two row partitions.
q-deformed Character Theory for Infinite-Dimensional Symplectic and Orthogonal Groups
The classification of irreducible, spherical characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary/orthogonal/symplectic groups can be obtained by finding all possible limits of normalized, irreducible characters of the corresponding finite-dimensional groups, as the rank tends to infinity. We solve a q-deformed version of the latter problem for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending previously known results for the unitary group. The proof is based on novel determinantal and double-contour integral formulas for the q-specialized characters.
