We prove asymptotic normality of the distributions defined by q-supernomials, which implies asymptotic normality of the distributions given by the central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion modules of the current algebra of sl2. The limit is taken over linearly scaled fusion powers of a fixed collection of irreducible representations. This includes as special instances all Demazure modules of the affine Kac-Moody algebra associated to sl2. Along with an available complementary result on the asymptotic normality of the basic specialization of graded tensors of the type A standard representation, our result is a central limit theorem for a serious class of graded tensors. It therefore serves as an indication towards universal behavior: The central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion and, in particular, Demazure modules behave asymptotically normal, as the number of fusions scale linearly in an asymptotic parameter, N say.

Block character of a finite symmetric group S(n) is a positive definite function which depends only on the number of cycles in permutation. We describe the cone of block characters by identifying its extreme rays, and find relations of the characters to descent representations and the coinvariant algebra of S(n). The decomposition of extreme block characters into the sum of characters of irreducible representations gives rise to certain limit shape theorems for random Young diagrams. We also study counterparts of the block characters for the infinite symmetric group S(\infty) along with their connection to the Thoma characters of the infinite linear group GL(\infty,q) over a Galois field.

We classify the irreducible unitary modules in category O for the rational Cherednik algebras of type G(r,1,n) and give explicit combinatorial formulas for their graded characters. More precisely, we produce a combinatorial algorithm determining, for each r-partition of n, the closed semi-linear set of parameters for which the contravariant form on the irreducible representation with the given r-partition as lowest weight is positive definite. We use this algorithm to give a closed form answer for the Cherednik algebra of the symmetric group (recovering a result of Etingof-Stoica and the author) and the Weyl groups of classical type.
Counting Generating Invariants Under Semisimple Group and Torus Actions
Although degree bounds and algorithms for the generators of various invariant rings have been known for decades, little is known about the cardinality of minimal generating sets. Estimates of such would provide lower bounds for the runtime of algorithms that compute invariants. Fix a semisimple linear algebraic group, choose an irreducible representation of highest weight w, and consider the irreducible representations of highest weight nw. As n goes to infinity, the cardinality of a minimal set of generating invariants grows faster than any polynomial in n. On the other hand, combinatorial methods yield sub-exponential upper bounds for the growth of generating sets for torus invariants on the binary forms.

In this note we are interested in labelling the irreducible representations of non-semisimple specialisations of Hecke algebras of complex reflection groups. We will use category O for the rational Cherednik algebra and the KZ functor together with elementary algebraic and combinatorial arguments to construct "canonical basic sets" in many cases. We will also show that the images of the standard modules through the KZ functor agree with the appropriate cell modules, whenever the Hecke algebra has a cellular structure.

We give a set of sufficient conditions for a Laurent polynomial to be the q-character of a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of a quantum affine group. We use this result to obtain an explicit path description of q-characters for a class of modules in type B. In particular, this proves a conjecture of Kuniba-Ohta-Suzuki.

Starting with the zero-square "zeon algebra", the regular representation gives rise to a Boolean lattice representation of sl(2). We detail the su(2) content of the Boolean lattice, providing the irreducible representations carried by the algebra generated by the subsets of an n-set. The group elements are found, exhibiting the "special functions" in this context. The corresponding Leibniz rule and group law are shown. Krawtchouk polynomials, the Hamming and the Johnson schemes appear naturally. Applications to the Boolean poset and the structure of Hadamard-Sylvester matrices are shown as well.
On W-algebra extensions of (2,p) minimal models: p > 3
This is a continuation of arXiv:0908.4053, where, among other things, we classified irreducible representations of the triplet vertex algebra W_{2,3}. In this part we extend the classification to W_{2,p}, for all odd p>3. We also determine the structure of the center of the Zhu algebra A(W_{2,p}) which implies the existence of a family of logarithmic modules having L(0)-nilpotent ranks 2 and 3. A logarithmic version of Macdonald-Morris constant term identity plays a key role in the paper.
Non-gatherable triples for classical affine root systems

This paper contains a complete description of minimal non-gatherable triangle triples in the lambda-sequences for the affine classical root systems and some claims for arbitrary (reduced) affine root systems. It continues our previous paper devoted to the non-affine case; interestingly, the affine theory clarifies the classification in the non-affine case. The lambda-sequences are associated with reduced decompositions (words) in affine Weyl groups. The existence of the non-gatherable triples is a combinatorial obstacle for using the technique of intertwiners in the theory of irreducible representations of the (double) affine Hecke algebras, complementary to their algebraic-geometric theory.

The Weil representation of the symplectic group associated to a finite abelian group of odd order is shown to have a multiplicity-free decomposition. When the abelian group is p-primary, the irreducible representations occurring in the Weil representation are parametrized by a partially ordered set which is independent of p. As p varies, the dimension of the irreducible representation corresponding to each parameter is shown to be a polynomial in p which is calculated explicitly. The commuting algebra of the Weil representation has a basis indexed by another partially ordered set which is independent of p. The expansions of the projection operators onto the irreducible invariant subspaces in terms of this basis are calculated. The coefficients are again polynomials in p. These results remain valid in the more general setting of finitely generated torsion modules over a Dedekind domain.
Combinatorial bases for covariant representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n)

Covariant tensor representations of gl(m|n) occur as irreducible components of tensor powers of the natural (m+n)-dimensional representation. We construct a basis of each covariant representation and give explicit formulas for the action of the generators of gl(m|n) in this basis. The basis has the property that the natural Lie subalgebras gl(m) and gl(n) act by the classical Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas. The main role in the construction is played by the fact that the subspace of gl(m)-highest vectors in any finite-dimensional irreducible representation of gl(m|n) carries a structure of an irreducible module over the Yangian Y(gl(n)). One consequence is a new proof of the character formula for the covariant representations first found by Berele and Regev and by Sergeev.
Discrete series representations and K multiplicities for U(p,q). User's guide
This document is a companion for the Maple program : Discrete series and K-types for U(p,q) available on:http://www.math.jussieu.fr/~vergne We explain an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of an irreducible representation of U(p)x U(q) in a discrete series of U(p,q). It is based on Blattner's formula. We recall the general mathematical background to compute Kostant partition functions via multidimensional residues, and we outline our algorithm. We also point out some properties of the piecewise polynomial functions describing multiplicities based on Paradan's results.

Vershik and Kerov gave asymptotical bounds for the maximal and the typical dimensions of irreducible representations of symmetric groups $S_n$. It was conjectured by G. Olshanski that the maximal and the typical dimensions of the isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group admit similar asymptotical bounds. The main result of this article is the proof of this conjecture. Consider the natural representation of $S_n$ on $(\mathbb{C}^N)^{\otimes n}$. Its isotypic components are parametrized by Young diagrams with $n$ cells and at most $N$ rows. P. Biane found the limit shape of Young diagrams when $n\rightarrow\infty,\ \sqrt{n}/N\rightarrow c$. By showing that this limit shape is the unique solution to a variational problem, it is proven here, that after scaling, the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components lie between positive constants. A new proof of Biane's limit-shape theorem is obtained.
How close can we come to a parity function when there isn't one?
Consider a group G such that there is no homomorphism f:G to {+1,-1}. In that case, how close can we come to such a homomorphism? We show that if f has zero expectation, then the probability that f(xy) = f(x) f(y), where x, y are chosen uniformly and independently from G, is at most 1/2(1+1/sqrt{d}), where d is the dimension of G's smallest nontrivial irreducible representation. For the alternating group A_n, for instance, d=n-1. On the other hand, A_n contains a subgroup isomorphic to S_{n-2}, whose parity function we can extend to obtain an f for which this probability is 1/2(1+1/{n \choose 2}). Thus the extent to which f can be "more homomorphic" than a random function from A_n to {+1,-1} lies between O(n^{-1/2}) and Omega(n^{-2}).

The symplectic group branching algebra, B, is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of Sp(2n-2,C) in each irreducible representation of Sp(2n,C). By describing on B an ASL structure, we construct an explicit standard monomial basis of B consisting of Sp(2n-2,C) highest weight vectors. Moreover, B is known to carry a canonical action of the n-fold product SL(2) \times ... \times SL(2), and we show that the standard monomial basis is the unique (up to scalar) weight basis associated to this representation. Finally, using the theory of Hibi algebras we describe a deformation of Spec(B) into an explicit toric variety.
Representations of Finite Unipotent Linear Groups by the Method of Clusters
The general linear group GL(n, K) over a field K contains a particularly prominent subgroup U(n, K), consisting of all the upper triangular unipotent elements. In this paper we are interested in the case when K is the finite field F_q, and our goal is to better understand the representation theory of U(n, F_q). The complete classification of the complex irreducible representations of this group has long been known to be a difficult task. The orbit method of Kirillov, famous for its success when K has characteristic 0, is a natural source of intuition and conjectures, but in our case the relation between coadjoint orbits and complex representations is still a mystery. Here we introduce a natural variant of the orbit method, in which the central role is played by certain clusters of coadjoint orbits. This "method of clusters" leads to the construction of a subring in the representation ring of U(n, F_q) that is rich in structure but pleasantly comprehensible. The cluster method also has many of the major features one would expect from the philosophy of orbit method.

Two representations of a reductive group G are spectrally equivalent if the same irreducible representations appear in both of them. The semigroup of finite dimensional representations of G with tensor product and up to spectral equivalence is a rather complicated object. We show that the Grothendieck group of this semigroup is more tractable and give a description of it in terms of moment polytopes of representations. As a corollary, we give a proof of the Kazarnovskii theorem on the number of solutions in G of a system f_1(x) = ... = f_m(x) = 0, where m=dim(G) and each f_i is a generic function in the space of matrix elements of a representation pi_i of G.

We construct the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the homogeneous space (Cartan domain) D_4=SO(4,2)/(SO(4)\times SO(2)) of the conformal group SO(4,2) (locally isomorphic to SU(2,2)) in 1+3 dimensions. The manifold D_4 can be mapped one-to-one onto the future tube domain C^4_+ of the complex Minkowski space through a Cayley transformation, where other kind of (electromagnetic) wavelets have already been proposed in the literature. We study the unitary irreducible representations of the conformal group on the Hilbert spaces L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ) and L^2_h(C^4_+,d\tildeν_λ) of square integrable holomorphic functions with scale dimension λand continuous mass spectrum, prove the isomorphism (equivariance) between both Hilbert spaces, admissibility and tight-frame conditions, provide reconstruction formulas and orthonormal basis of homogeneous polynomials and discuss symmetry properties and the Euclidean limit of the proposed conformal wavelets. For that purpose, we firstly state and prove a λ-extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem (SMT), which turns out to be a useful mathematical tool for us, particularly as a generating function for the unitary-representation functions of the conformal group and for the derivation of the reproducing (Bergman) kernel of L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ). SMT is related to MacMahon's Master Theorem (MMT) and an extension of both in terms of Louck's SU(N) solid harmonics is also provided for completeness. Convergence conditions are also studied.

We prove a closed character formula for the symmetric powers $S^N V(λ)$ of a fixed irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by means of partial fraction decomposition. The formula involves rational functions in rank of $\mathfrak{g}$ many variables which are easier to determine than the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ themselves. We compute those rational functions in some interesting cases. Furthermore, we introduce a residue-type generating function for the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ and explain the connections between our character formula, vector partition functions and iterated partial fraction decomposition.

We construct (q,t)-Catalan polynomials and q-Fuss-Catalan polynomials for any irreducible complex reflection group W. The two main ingredients in this construction are Rouquier's formulation of shift functors for the rational Cherednik algebras of W, and Opdam's analysis of permutations of the irreducible representations of W arising from the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection.
