Dimensions of the irreducible representations of the symmetric and alternating group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish the existence of an irreducible representation of $A_n$ whose dimension does not occur as the dimension of an irreducible representation of $S_n$, and vice versa. This proves a conjecture by Tong-Viet. The main ingredient in the proof is a result on large prime factors in short intervals.

Low-degree Boolean functions on $S_n$, with an application to isoperimetry
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that Boolean functions on $S_n$, whose Fourier transform is highly concentrated on irreducible representations indexed by partitions of $n$ whose largest part has size at least $n-t$, are close to being unions of cosets of stabilizers of $t$-tuples. We also obtain an edge-isoperimetric inequality for the transposition graph on $S_n$ which is asymptotically sharp for subsets of $S_n$ of size $n!/\textrm{poly}(n)$, using eigenvalue techniques. We then combine these two results to obtain a sharp edge-isoperimetric inequality for subsets of $S_n$ of size $(n-t)!$, where $n$ is large compared to $t$, confirming a conjecture of Ben Efraim in these cases.

The Saxl Conjecture for Fourth Powers via the Semigroup Property
Published in J. Algebra. Comb. (2017) 45:33-80 • View PublicationBIB
The tensor square conjecture states that for $n \geq 10$, there is an irreducible representation $V$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ such that $V \otimes V$ contains every irreducible representation of $S_n$. Our main result is that for large enough $n$, there exists an irreducible representation $V$ such that $V^{\otimes 4}$ contains every irreducible representation. We also show that tensor squares of certain irreducible representations contain $(1-o(1))$-fraction of irreducible representations with respect to two natural probability distributions. Our main tool is the semigroup property, which allows us to break partitions down into smaller ones.

Filtrations on Springer fiber cohomology and Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.

Involution words: counting problems and connections to Schubert calculus for symmetric orbit closures
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 160 (2018), 217-260 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

Kostka multiplicity one for multipartitions
If $[λ(j)]$ is a multipartition of the positive integer $n$ (a sequence of partitions with total size $n$), and $μ$ is a partition of $n$, we study the number $K_{[λ(j)]μ}$ of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $[λ(j)]$ and total weight $μ$. We show that the numbers $K_{[λ(j)] μ}$ occur naturally as the multiplicities in certain permutation representations of wreath products. The main result is a set of conditions on $[λ(j)]$ and $μ$ which are equivalent to $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$, generalizing a theorem of Berenshteĭn and Zelevinskiĭ. We also show that the questions of whether $K_{[λ(j)] μ} > 0$ or $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$ can be answered in polynomial time, expanding on a result of Narayanan. Finally, we give an application to multiplicities in the degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representations of the finite general linear group, and we show that the problem of determining whether a given irreducible representation of the finite general linear group appears with nonzero multiplicity in a given degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representation, with their partition parameters as input, is $NP$-complete.

A Combinatorial Formula for Affine Hall-Littlewood Functions via a Weighted Brion Theorem
Published in Selecta Mathematica, 22:3 (2016), pp 1703-1747 • View PublicationBIB
We present a new combinatorial formula for Hall-Littlewood functions associated with the affine root system of type $\tilde A_{n-1}$, i.e. corresponding to the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n$. Our formula has the form of a sum over the elements of a basis constructed by Feigin, Jimbo, Loktev, Miwa and Mukhin in the corresponding irreducible representation. Our formula can be viewed as a weighted sum of exponentials of integer points in a certain infinite-dimensional convex polyhedron. We derive a weighted version of Brion's theorem and then apply it to our polyhedron to prove the formula.

Centralizer algebras of the primitive unitary reflection group of order $96$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Among the unitary reflection groups, the one on the title is singled out by its importance in, for example, coding theory and number theory. In this paper we start with describing the irreducible representations of this group and then examine the semi-simple structure of the centralizer algebra in the tensor representation.

Intersection cohomology of the symmetric reciprocal plane

We compute the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the uniform matroid of rank n-1 on n elements by proving that the i-th coefficient of is equal to the number of ways to choose i non-intersecting chords in an (n-i+1)-gon. We also show that the corresponding intersection cohomology group is isomorphic to the irreducible representation of the symmetric group associated to the partition [n-2i,2,...,2].

A quantization of the harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Published in Journal of Functional Analysis, 270, 375-418 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it turned out that their correlation kernels are computable in explicit form --- they admit a closed expression in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2-F-1 (Borodin and Olshanski, Ann. Math., 2005, arXiv:0109194). In the present work we describe a (nonevident) q-discretization of the whole construction. This leads us to a new family of determinantal point processes. We reveal its connection with an exotic finite system of q-discrete orthogonal polynomials --- the so-called pseudo big q-Jacobi polynomials. The new point processes live on a double q-lattice and we show that their correlation kernels are expressed through the basic hypergeometric function 2-φ-1. A crucial novel ingredient of our approach is an extended version G of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph (the conventional graph describes the Gelfand-Tsetlin branching rule for irreducible representations of unitary groups). We find the q-boundary of G, thus extending previously known results (Gorin, Adv. Math., 2012, arXiv:1011.1769).

On the representation theory of $G\sim S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the Vershik-Okounkov approach to the complex irreducible representations of $S_n$ and $G\sim S_n$ we parametrize the irreducible representations and their bases by spectral objects rather than combinatorial objects and then, at the end, give a bijection between the spectral and combinatorial objects. The fundamental ideas are similar in both cases but there are additional technicalities involved in the $G\sim S_n$ case. This was carried out by Pushkarev. The present work gives a fully detailed exposition of Pushkarev's theory. For the most part we follow the original but our definition of a Gelfand-Tsetlin subspace, based on a multiplicity free chain of subgroups, is slightly different and leads to a more natural development of the theory. We also work out in detail an example, the generalized Johnson scheme, from this viewpoint.

On the asymptotics of Kronecker coefficients, 2
Kronecker coefficients encode the tensor products of complex irreducible representations of symmetric groups. Their stability properties have been considered recently by several authors (Vallejo, Pak and Panova, Stembridge). In previous works we described a geometric method, based on Schur-Weyl duality, that allows to produce huge series of instances of this phenomenon. In this note we show how to go beyond these so-called additive triples. We show that the set of stable triples defines a union of faces of the moment polytope. Moreover these faces may have different dimensions, and many of them have codimension one.

Signature characters of highest-weight representations of $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$, the quantum group of type $A$ for $|q| = 1$, $q$ generic. We provide formulas for signature characters of irreducible finite-dimensional highest weight modules and Verma modules. In both cases, the technique involves combinatorics of the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. As an application, we obtain information about unitarity of finite-dimensional irreducible representations for arbitrary $q$: we classify the continuous spectrum of the unitarity locus. We also recover some known results in the classical limit $q \rightarrow 1$ that were obtained by different means. Finally, we provide several explicit examples of signature characters.

On the asymptotics of Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kronecker coefficients encode the tensor products of complex irreducible representations of symmetric groups. Their stability properties have been considered recently by several authors (Vallejo, Pak and Panova, Stembridge). We describe a geometric method, based on Schur-Weyl duality, that allows to produce huge series of instances of this phenomenon. Moreover the method gives access to lots of extra information. Most notably, we can often compute the stable Kronecker coefficients, sometimes as number of points in very explicit polytopes. We can also describe explicitely the moment polytope in the neighbourhood of our stable triples. Finally, we explain an observation of Stembridge on the behaviour of certain rectangular Kronecker coefficients, by relating it to the affine Dynkin diagram of type $E\_6$.

Canonical bases for cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous work, the first three authors conjectured that the ring of regular functions on a natural class of affine log Calabi-Yau varieties (those with maximal boundary) has a canonical vector space basis parameterized by the integral tropical points of the mirror. Further, the structure constants for the multiplication rule in this basis should be given by counting broken lines (certain combinatorial objects, morally the tropicalisations of holomorphic discs). Here we prove the conjecture in the case of cluster varieties, where the statement is a more precise form of the Fock-Goncharov dual basis conjecture. In particular, under suitable hypotheses, for each Y the partial compactification of an affine cluster variety U given by allowing some frozen variables to vanish, we obtain canonical bases for the ring of functions on Y extending to a basis for functions on U. Each choice of seed canonically identifies the parameterizing sets of these bases with integral points in a polyhedral cone. These results specialize to basis results of combinatorial representation theory. For example, by considering the open double Bruhat cell U in the basic affine space Y we obtain a canonical basis of each irreducible representation of SL_r, parameterized by a set which each choice of seed identifies with integral points of a lattice polytope. These bases and polytopes are all constructed essentially without representation theoretic considerations. Along the way, our methods prove a number of conjectures in cluster theory, including positivity of the Laurent phenomenon for cluster algebras of geometric type.

The Saxl Conjecture and the Dominance Order
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012 Jan Saxl conjectured that all irreducible representations of the symmetric group occur in the decomposition of the tensor square of the irreducible representation corresponding to the staircase partition. We make progress on this conjecture by proving the occurrence of all those irreducibles which correspond to partitions that are comparable to the staircase partition in the dominance order. Moreover, we use our result to show the occurrence of all irreducibles corresponding to hook partitions. This generalizes results by Pak, Panova, and Vallejo from 2013.

Minuscule Schubert varieties: Poset polytopes, PBW-degenerated Demazure modules, and Kogan faces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of posets and the associated chain and order polytopes. We identify the order polytope as a maximal Kogan face in a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope of a multiple of a fundamental weight. We show that the character of such a Kogan face equals to the character of a Demazure module which occurs in the irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ having highest weight multiple of fundamental weight and for any such Demazure module there exists a corresponding poset and associated maximal Kogan face. We prove that the chain polytope parametrizes a monomial basis of the associated PBW-graded Demazure module and further, that the Demazure module is a favourable module, e.g. interesting geometric properties are governed by combinatorics of convex polytopes. Thus, we obtain for any minuscule Schubert variety a flat degeneration into a toric projective variety which is projectively normal and arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the Weyl group element such that the toric variety associated to the chain polytope and the toric variety associated to the order polytope are isomorphic.

Electrical Lie Algebra of Classical Types
We investigate the structure of electrical Lie algebras of finite Dynkin type. These Lie algebras were introduced by Lam-Pylyavskyy in the study of \textit{circular planar electrical networks}. The corresponding Lie group acts on such networks via some combinatorial operations studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and Colin de Verdière-Gitler-Vertigan. Lam-Pylyavskyy studied the electrical Lie algebra of type $A$ of even rank in detail, and gave a conjecture for the dimension of electrical Lie algebras of finite Dynkin types. We prove this conjecture for all classical Dynkin types, that is, $A$, $B$, $C$, and $D$. Furthermore, we are able to explicitly describe the structure of the corresponding electrical Lie algebras as the semisimple product of the symplectic Lie algebra with its finite dimensional irreducible representations.

Signatures of representations of Hecke algebras and rational Cherednik algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Determining whether an irreducible representation of a group (or $*$-algebra) admits a non-degenerate invariant, positive-definite Hermitian form is an important problem in representation theory. In this paper, we study a related notion: that of signatures. We study representations $S^λ(q)$ of $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$, the Hecke algebra of type $A$ ($|q| = 1$), and representations $M_{c}(λ)$ of $\mathbb{H}_{c}$, the rational Cherednik algebra of type $A$ ($c \in \mathbb{R}$), which have unique (up to scaling) invariant Hermitian forms (here $λ$ is a partition of $n$). The signature is the number of elements with positive norm minus the number of elements with negative norm, and we analogously define the signature character in the case that there is a natural grading on the module. We provide formulas for (1) signatures of modules over $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$ and (2) signature characters of modules over $\mathbb{H}_{c}$. We study the limit $c \rightarrow -\infty$, in which case the signature character has a simpler form in terms of inversions and descents of permutations in $S(n)$. We provide examples corresponding to some special shapes, and small values of $n$. Finally, when $q = e^{2 πi c}$, we show that the asymptotic signature character of the $\mathbb{H}_{c}$-module $M_{c}(τ)$ is the signature of the $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$-module $S^τ(q)$.

Non-Archimedean Whittaker functions as characters: a probabilistic approach to the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) • View PublicationBIB
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field (e.g $GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$ ), Jacquet's Whittaker function is essentially proportional to a character of an irreducible representation of the Langlands dual group $G^\vee( \mathbb{C} )$ ( a Schur function if $G = GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$). We propose a probabilistic approach to this claim, known as the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula, when the group $G$ has at least one minuscule cocharacter in the coweight lattice. Our presentation goes along the following lines. Thanks to a minuscule random walk $W^{(z)}$ on the coweight lattice and a related random walk on the Borel subgroup, we establish a Poisson kernel formula for the non-Archimedean Whittaker function. The expression and its ingredients are similar to the one previously obtained by the author in the Archimedean case. A simple manipulation reduces the problem to evaluating the probability of $W^{(z)}$ never exiting the Weyl chamber. Then, an implementation of the reflection principle forces the appearance of the Weyl character formula and therefore retrieves characters of $G^\vee\left( \mathbb{C} \right)$. The construction of the random walk on the Borel subgroup requires some care. It is extracted from a spherical random walk whose increments have a distribution that can be understood as elements from the spherical Hecke algebra.
