Brun's inequality for a geometric lattice
In a seminal paper of 1915, V. Brun introduced Brun's sieve, which is based on Brun's inequality for the Möbius function and is a very powerful tool in modern number theory. The importance of the Möbius function in enumeration problems led G.-C. Rota to introduce the concept of the Möbius function to partially ordered sets. In this article, we prove Brun's inequality for geometric lattices and develop a sieve in this context. One of the main ingredients is a recent work of K. Adiprasito, J. Huh, and E. Katz on the log-concavity of absolute values of the Whitney numbers associated with matroids. We also study shifted convolutions of the Whitney numbers associated with Dowling lattices. Further, we derive an asymptotic formula for generalized Dowling numbers.
On the irreducibility and monodromy of Tutte polynomials
We study algebraic properties of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid and its generalizations to other combinatorially defined bivariate polynomial invariants. Merino, de Mier and Noy showed that the Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid is irreducible, and Bohn, Cameron and M{ü}ller conjectured the stronger property that the Galois/monodromy group of the Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid of rank r is isomorphic to the full symmetric group on r letters. First, we generalize the result of Merino-de Mier-Noy to the context of general ranked sets by exploiting a recent translation of the Brylawski relations, satisfied by the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial, into a functional identity. Second, we give the first confirmation of the conjecture of Bohn-Cameron-M{ü}ller for infinite families of connected matroids, including the cycle graphs and the uniform matroids. Moreover, we apply the large sieve to obtain a probabilistic statement showing that suitable linear combinations of coprime Tutte polynomials generically satisfy the conjecture.
Vanishing theorems for combinatorial geometries
We establish strong vanishing theorems for line bundles on wonderful varieties of hyperplane arrangements, and we show that the resulting positivity properties of Euler characteristics extend to all matroids. We achieve this by showing that every degeneration of a wonderful variety within the permutohedral toric variety is reduced and Cohen--Macaulay. The same holds for a larger class of subschemes in products of projective lines that we call "kindred," which are characterized by matroidal Hilbert polynomials. Our results give a new proof of the 20-year-old f-vector conjecture of Speyer and resolve the conjecture of Tohaneanu that higher order Orlik--Terao algebras are Cohen--Macaulay.
White's Conjecture for Paving Matroids
White's conjecture asserts that any two tuples of matroid bases that have the same multi-set union can be transformed from one to another by symmetric exchanges; it also implies that the toric ideals of matroids are generated by the binomials encoding these exchanges. We prove White's conjecture for the class of paving matroids. Our strategy is to generalize the inductive argument using circuit-hyperplane relaxations in the recent work of Han et al. to stressed hyperplane relaxations.
Many rays of the submodular cone
The study of the cone of submodular functions goes back to Jack Edmonds' seminal 1970 paper, which already highlighted the difficulty of characterizing its extreme rays. Since then, researchers from diverse fields have sought to characterize, enumerate, and bound the number of such rays. In this paper, we introduce an inductive construction that generates new rays of the submodular cone. This allows us to establish that the $n$-th submodular cone has at least $2^{2^{n-2}}$ rays, which improves upon the lower bound obtained from Hien Q. Nguyen's 1986 characterization of indecomposable matroid polytopes by a factor of order $\sqrt{n^3}$ in the exponent.
Inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids under deletion
We provide a deletion formula for the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid. Our formulas provide analogues to the deletion formulas of Braden--Vysogorets for Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials. We discuss several consequences, which include closed formulas and recursions for these invariants on uniform matroids, projective geometries, glued cycles, and arbitrary matroids of corank $2$. As a relevant application of our deletion formula, we show the existence of a matroid of rank $19$ which disproves a conjecture of Xie and Zhang concerning a real-rootedness property of inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
Myhill-Nerode for hypergraphs and an application to gain-graphic matroids
We present a Myhill-Nerode theorem for hypergraphs. The theorem involves an operation which takes two input structures and produces a hypergraph as output. Using this operation, we define a Myhill-Nerode-type equivalence relation and show that if a class of hypergraphs is definable in the counting monadic second-order logic of hypergraphs, then the equivalence relation has finite index. We apply this tool to classes of gain-graphic matroids, and show that if the group $Γ$ is not uniformly locally finite, then the class of $Γ$\dash gain-graphic matroids is not monadically definable. (A group is uniformly locally finite if, for every $k$, there is a maximum size amongst subgroups generated by at most $k$ elements.) In addition, we define the conviviality graph of a group, and show that if the group $Γ$ has an infinite conviviality graph, then the class of $Γ$\dash gain-graphic matroids is not monadically definable. This will be useful in future constructions.
The combinatorial geometry of particle physics
Recent breakthroughs in the study of scattering amplitudes have uncovered profound and unexpected connections with combinatorial geometry. These connections range from classical structures -- such as polytopes, matroids, and Grassmannians -- to more modern developments including positroid varieties and the amplituhedron. Together they point toward the unifying framework of positive geometry, in which geometric domains canonically determine analytic functions governing scattering processes. This survey traces the emergence of positive geometry from the physics of amplitudes, building towards recent progress on amplitudes for matroids.

The resonance varieties, the holonomy Lie algebra, and the holonomy Chen Lie algebra associated with the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid provide an algebraic lens through which to examine the rich combinatorial structure of matroids and their geometric realizations as complex hyperplane arrangements. In this survey paper, we emphasize the commonalities between these objects but also the possible ways in which realizable and non-realizable matroids differ, leading to some open questions.
On the coefficients of interior and exterior polynomials of polymatroids
The Tutte polynomial is an important invariant of graphs and matroids. Chen and Guo \emph{[Adv. in Appl. Math. 166 (2025) 102868.]} proved that for a $(k+1)$-edge connected graph $G$ and for any $i$ with $0\leq i <\frac{3(k+1)}{2}$, $$[y^{g-i}]T_{G}(1,y)=\binom{|V(G)|+i-2}{i}-\sum_{j=0}^{i}\binom{|V(G)|+i-2-j}{i-j}|\mathcal{SC}_{j}(G)|,$$ where $g=|E(G)|-|V(G)|+1$, $\mathcal{SC}_{j}(G)$ is the set of all minimal edge cuts with $j$ edges, $T_{G}(x,y)$ is the Tutte polynomial of the graph $G$, and $[y^{g-i}]T_{G}(1,y)$ denotes the coefficient of $y^{g-i}$ in the polynomial $T_{G}(1,y)$. Recently, Ma, Guan and Jin \emph{[arXiv.2503.06095, 2025.]} generalized this result from graphs to matroids and obtained the dual result on coefficients of $T_M(x,1)$ of matroids $M$ at the same time. In 2013, as a generalization of $T_{G}(x,1)$ and $T_{G}(1,y)$ of graphs $G$ to hypergraphs, Kálmán \emph{[Adv. Math. 244 (2013) 823-873.]} introduced interior and exterior polynomials for connected hypergraphs. Chen and Guo posed a problem that can one generalize these results of graphs to interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs? In this paper, we solve it in the affirmative by obtaining results for more general polymatroids, which include the case of hypergraphs and also generalize the results of matroids due to Ma, Guan and Jin. As an application, the sequence consisting of these coefficients on polymatroids is proven to be unimodal, while the unimodality of the whole coefficients of matroids was obtained in 2018 by Adiprasito, Huh and Katz using Hodge theory.
Positroidal aspects of non-nesting rook placements
Rook matroids were recently introduced by the author and Alexandersson as matroids whose bases arise from certain restricted rook placements on a skew-shaped board. They were shown to be a subclass of transversal matroids and positroids. We further investigate the structural properties of rook matroids with an emphasis on the positroidal point of view. In particular, we characterize rook matroids in terms of Grassmann necklaces of positroids, answering a question of Lam (2024). Along the way, we give a new proof of the positroidal structure of rook matroids and determine an important subclass of their cyclic flats.
Reconstrucion of oriented matroids from Varchenko-Gelfand algebras
The algebra of $R$-valued functions on the set of chambers of a real hyperplane arrangement is called the Varchenko-Gelfand (VG) algebra. This algebra carries a natural filtration by the degree with respect to Heaviside functions, giving rise to the associated graded VG algebra. When the coefficient ring $R$ is an integral domain of characteristic $2$, the graded VG algebra is known to be isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra. In this paper, we study VG algebras over coefficient rings of characteristic different from $2$, and investigate to what extent VG algebras determine the underlying oriented matroid structures.
Our main results concern hyperplane arrangements that are generic in codimension $2$. For such arrangements, if $R$ is an integral domain of characteristic not equal to $2$, then the oriented matroid can be recovered from both the filtered and the graded VG algebras. As a byproduct, we prove that, unlike the complexification, the cohomology ring of the complement of a $3$-plexification of a real arrangement is not determined by the intersection lattice.
We also formulate an algorithm that is expected to reconstruct oriented matroids from VG algebras in the case of general arrangements.
New results on $k$-Roudneff's conjecture
In this paper we study the number of $k$-neighborly reorientations of an oriented matroid, leading to study $k$-Roudneff's conjecture, the case $k=1$ being the original statement conjectured in 1991. We first prove the conjecture for the family of Lawrence oriented matroids (LOMs) with even rank $r=2k+2$ and also for low ranks by computer. Next, we provide a general upper bound for the number of $k$-neighborly reorientations of any LOM. Finally, we prove that for any $k\ge 1$ and any oriented matroid on $n$ elements, $k$-Roudneff's conjecture holds asymptotically as $n\rightarrow \infty$ and thus giving more credit to the conjecture.
Composition Direction of Seymour's Theorem for Regular Matroids -- Formally Verified
Seymour's decomposition theorem is a hallmark result in matroid theory presenting a structural characterization of the class of regular matroids. Formalization of matroid theory faces many challenges, most importantly that only a limited number of notions and results have been implemented so far. In this work, we formalize the proof of the forward (composition) direction of Seymour's theorem for regular matroids. To this end, we develop a library in Lean 4 that implements definitions and results about totally unimodular matrices, vector matroids, their standard representations, regular matroids, and 1-, 2-, and 3-sums of matrices and binary matroids given by their standard representations. Using this framework, we formally state Seymour's decomposition theorem and implement a formally verified proof of the composition direction in the setting where the matroids have finite rank and may have infinite ground sets.
Curvature of basis exchange walks
We prove both lower and upper bounds on the Ollivier-Ricci curvature of the basis exchange walk on a matroid. We give several examples of non-negatively curved basis exchange walks and negatively curved basis exchange walks.
Addition theorems for Ziegler pairs of hyperplane arrangements
Inspired by Terao's freeness conjecture, we examine Ziegler pairs, which are pairs of hyperplane arrangements that share the same underlying matroid but have different modules of logarithmic derivations. In this paper, we present a general construction that yields the first known families of Ziegler pairs in arbitrary dimension and size, starting from examples in the complex projective plane.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Facial nested complexes and acyclonestohedra
We study nested complexes of building sets on the Las Vergnas face lattices of oriented matroids. Such a nested complex is the face lattice of an oriented matroid, obtained by iterated stellar subdivisions of the positive tope. If the oriented matroid is realizable, the nested complex is isomorphic to the boundary complex of a polytope.
We turn this into an explicit and combinatorially meaningful polytopal realization. We prove that the facial nested complex can be embedded as the acyclic subcomplex of the nested complex of a well-chosen boolean building set. In the realizable case, we show that this acyclic subcomplex can be geometrically selected as the section of a nestohedron by the evaluation space of the vector configuration, which we call acyclonestohedron.
Our framework generalizes the poset associahedra recently introduced by P. Galashin, from order polytopes to any polytope. Poset associahedra are the graphical acyclonestohedra, and our approach recovers as particular cases the main results of P. Galashin and answers some of his open questions. Besides poset associahedra, our framework unifies various other existing families of nested-like polytopes, such as the simple polytope nestohedra, the hyperoctahedral nestohedra, the design graph associahedra and the permutopermutohedra, to which our palette of results can be directly applied.
The core of our construction is the embedding of the facial nested complex inside a boolean nested complex. More generally, we provide conditions that guarantee an embedding between nested complexes over two lattices. For instance, any atomic nested complex has a canonical embedding inside a boolean nested complex. As another application, we embed nested complexes over lattices of faces into nested complexes over lattices of flats, recovering as a particular case, the embedding of the positive Bergman complex into the Bergman complex.
Entropy approximations of algebraic matroids over finite fields
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of entropy polymatroids associated with algebraic matroids over finite fields. Given an algebraic matroid ${\sf M}:=(\mathcal{E},r)$ and the irreducible variety $V$ associated with ${\sf M}$, we consider the polymatroid $h_{\mathbb{F}}$ induced by the entropies of the projections of $V(\mathbb{F})$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{G}$. Revisiting a construction of Matú$\check{\mathrm{s}}$, we show that the polymatroid $h_{\mathbb{F}}$ converges to the rank function $r$ of ${\sf M}$ as $q:=|\mathbb{F}|$ tends to infinity.
Our main contribution is to make this convergence quantitative: we derive explicit uniform error bounds for the deviation $|h_\mathbb{F}-r|$, expressed in terms of the degree of $V$, the ground set size $|\mathcal{E}|$, the rank $r(\mathcal{E})$, and $q$. The proofs combine tools of algebraic geometry (effective Lang-Weil estimates and intrinsic degree bounds for annihilating polynomials of circuits) with information-theoretic arguments (submodularity of entropy and conditional entropy estimates).
These results provide the first effective and uniform approximation bounds for algebraic matroids by entropy polymatroids, clarifying the quantitative link between algebraic independence (captured by matroid rank) and information-theoretic independence (captured by entropy).
Colorful circuits and colorful topes in oriented matroids
We provide a short proof of a conic version of the colorful Carathéodory theorem for oriented matroids. Holmsen's extension of the colorful Carathéodory theorem to oriented matroids (Advances in Mathematics, 2016) already encompasses several generalizations of the original result, but not its conic version. Our approach relies on a common generalization of Sperner's lemma and Meshulam's lemma-two closely related results from combinatorial topology that have found a number of applications in discrete geometry and combinatorics. This generalization may be of independent interest.
Using a similar approach, we also establish the following colorful theorem for topes, whose special geometric case had not been considered before: Given $n$ topes from a uniform oriented matroid with $n$ elements, if they agree on some element, then there is a way to select a distinct element from each tope, together with its sign, so as to form another tope of the oriented matroid. Motivated by this theorem, we further explore other conditions leading to the same conclusion.
