Cohomology of Coxeter arrangements and Solomon's descent algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We refine a conjecture by Lehrer and Solomon on the structure of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ and relate it to the descent algebra of $W$. As a result, we claim that both the group algebra of $W$, as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of element centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. We give a uniform proof of the claim for symmetric groups. In addition, we prove that a relative version of the conjecture holds for every pair $(W, W_L)$, where $W$ is arbitrary and $W_L$ is a parabolic subgroup of $W$ all of whose irreducible factors are of type $A$.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for reflection groups
Published in Advances in Math. vol 284, 22 (2015), 54-111 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we explicitly compute all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for semisimple or Kac-Moody groups G, that is, the structure coefficients of the cohomology algebra H^*(G/P), where P is a parabolic subgroup of G. These coefficients are of importance in enumerative geometry, algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. Our formula for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is given in terms of the Cartan matrix and the Weyl group of G. However, if some off-diagonal entries of the Cartan matrix are 0 or -1, the formula may contain negative summands. On the other hand, if the Cartan matrix satisfies $a_{ij}a_{ji}\ge 4$ for all $i,j$, then each summand in our formula is nonnegative that implies nonnegativity of all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We extend this and other results to the structure coefficients of the T-equivariant cohomology of flag varieties G/P and Bott-Samelson varieties Gamma_\ii(G).

Hom-configurations and noncrossing partitions
Let Q be a Dynkin quiver. The bounded derived category of the path algebra of Q has an autoequivalence given by the composition of the Auslander-Reiten translate and the square of the shift functor. We study maximal Hom-free sets in the corresponding orbit category C(Q). We prove that these sets are in bijection with periodic combinatorial configurations, as introduced by Riedtmann, certain Hom<=0-configurations, studied by Buan, Reiten and Thomas, and noncrossing partitions of the Coxeter group associated to Q which are not contained in any proper standard parabolic subgroup. Note that Reading has proved that these noncrossing partitions are in bijection with positive clusters in the associated cluster algebra. Finally, we give a definition of mutations of maximal Hom-free sets in C(Q) and prove that the graph of these mutations is connected.

Deformations of permutation representations of Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The permutation representation afforded by a Coxeter group W acting on the cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup inherits many nice properties from W such as a shellable Bruhat order and a flat deformation over Z[q] to a representation of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a larger class of ``quasiparabolic" subgroups (more generally, quasiparabolic W-sets), and show that they also inherit these properties. Our motivating example is the action of the symmetric group on fixed-point-free involutions by conjugation.

A Note on Element Centralizers in Finite Coxeter Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The normalizer $N_W(W_J)$ of a standard parabolic subgroup $W_J$ of a finite Coxeter group $W$ splits over the parabolic subgroup with complement $N_J$ consisting of certain minimal length coset representatives of $W_J$ in $W$. In this note we show that (with the exception of a small number of cases arising from a situation in Coxeter groups of type $D_n$) the centralizer $C_W(w)$ of an element $w \in W$ is in a similar way a semidirect product of the centralizer of $w$ in a suitable small parabolic subgroup $W_J$ with complement isomorphic to the normalizer complement $N_J$.

A Giambelli formula for classical $G/P$ spaces
Published in J. Algebraic Geometry 23 (2014), 245-278 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

Homology representations arising from the half cube, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a previous work (arXiv:0806.1503v2), we defined a family of subcomplexes of the $n$-dimensional half cube by removing the interiors of all half cube shaped faces of dimension at least $k$, and we proved that the homology of such a subcomplex is concentrated in degree $k-1$. This homology group supports a natural action of the Coxeter group $W(D_n)$ of type $D$. In this paper, we explicitly determine the characters (over ${\Bbb C}$) of these homology representations, which turn out to be multiplicity free. Regarded as representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ by restriction, the homology representations turn out to be direct sums of certain representations induced from parabolic subgroups. The latter representations of $\sym_n$ agree (over ${\Bbb C}$) with the representations of $\sym_n$ on the $(k-2)$-nd homology of the complement of the $k$-equal real hyperplane arrangement.

A statistic on the roots of a finite reflection group and a correspondence between the height function and Bruhat order
The action of a finite reflection group (type A) on its set of roots is understood as a permutation representation or group action. We show that this representation is an induced representation from a certain kind of parabolic subgroup. Furthermore, we use this representation to define a statistic (derived from the length function) on the set of roots. A possible application to Costas Arrays is hinted at in a proposition.

Branching properties for the groups G(de,e,r)
We study general properties of the restriction of the representations of the finite complex reflection groups $G(de,e,r+1)$ to their maximal parabolic subgroups of type $G(de,e,r)$, and focus notably on the multiplicity of components. In combinatorial terms, this amounts to the following question : which symmetries arise or disappear when one changes (exactly) one pearl in a combinatorial necklace ?

Quantum cohomology of G/P and homology of affine Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group, P \subset G a parabolic subgroup. We prove an unpublished result of D. Peterson which states that the quantum cohomology QH^*(G/P) of a flag variety is, up to localization, a quotient of the homology H_*(Gr_G) of the affine Grassmannian \Gr_G of G. As a consequence, all three-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of $G/P$ are identified with homology Schubert structure constants of H_*(Gr_G), establishing the equivalence of the quantum and homology affine Schubert calculi. For the case G = B, we use the Mihalcea's equivariant quantum Chevalley formula for QH^*(G/B), together with relationships between the quantum Bruhat graph of Brenti, Fomin and Postnikov and the Bruhat order on the affine Weyl group. As byproducts we obtain formulae for affine Schubert homology classes in terms of quantum Schubert polynomials. We give some applications in quantum cohomology. Our main results extend to the torus-equivariant setting.

Parabolic conjugacy in general linear groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let q be a power of a prime and n a positive integer. Let P(q) be a parabolic subgroup of the finite general linear group GL(n,q). We show that the number of P(q)-conjugacy classes in GL(n,q) is, as a function of q, a polynomial in q with integer coefficients. This answers a question of J. Alperin.

Matroids and Geometric Invariant Theory of torus actions on flag spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We apply a theorem of Gel'fand, Goresky, MacPherson, and Serganova about matroid polytopes to study semistability of partial flags relative to a T-linearized ample line bundle of a flag space F = SL(n)/P where T is a maximal torus in SL(n) and P is a parabolic subgroup containing T. We find that the semistable points are all detected by invariant sections of degree one regardless of the line bundle or linearization thereof, provided there exists at least one nonzero invariant section of degree one. In this case the degree one sections are sufficient to give a well defined map from the G.I.T. quotient F//T to projective space. Additionally, we show that the closure of any T-orbit in SL(n)/P is a projectively normal toric variety for any projective embedding of SL(n)/P.

A note on Bruhat order and double coset representatives
Let $W$ be a finite coxeter group, let $W_I$, $W_J$ be standard parabolic subgroups, let $u$, $v$ be minimal double cosets representatives of double cosets in $W_I W / W_J$ and let $u'$, $v'$ be the maximal representatives of those same two cosets. We show that $u < v$ if and only if $u' < v'$ for the Bruhat order.

On the shape of Bruhat intervals
Let (W,S) be a crystallographic Coxeter group (this includes all finite and affine Weyl groups), and J a subset of S. Let $W^J$ denote the set of minimal coset representatives modulo the parabolic subgroup $W_J$. For w in $W^J$, let $f^{w,J}_{i}$ denote the number of elements of length i below w in Bruhat order on $W^J$ (notation simplified to $f^{w}_{i}$ in the case when J=S). We show that $f^{w,J}_{i}$ is less than or equal to $f^{w,J}_{j}$ when i < j and j is less than or equal to the length of w minus i. Furthermore, we express when an initial and final interval of the f's is symmetric around the middle in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. It is also shown that if W is finite then the sequence of f's cannot grow too rapidly. Som result mirroring our first result are obtaind, again in the finite case. The proofs rely for the most part on properties of the cohomology of Kac-Moody Schubert varieties.

On a class of double cosets in reductive algebraic groups
We study a class of double coset spaces R_A \backslash G_1 \times G_2 /R_C, where G_1 and G_2 are connected reductive algebraic groups, and R_A and R_C are certain spherical subgroups of G_1 \times G_2 obtained by ``identifying'' Levi factors of parabolic subgroups in G_1 and G_2. Such double cosets naturally appear in the symplectic leaf decompositions of Poisson homogeneous spaces of complex reductive groups with the Belavin-Drinfeld Poisson structures. They also appear in orbit decompositions of the De Concini-Procesi compactifications of semi-simple groups of adjoint type. We find explicit parametrizations of the double coset spaces and describe the double cosets as homogeneous spaces of R_A \times R_C. We further show that all such double cosets give rise to set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation on unipotent algebraic groups.

Order ideals in weak subposets of Young's lattice and associated unimodality conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The k-Young lattice Y^k is a weak subposet of the Young lattice containing partitions whose first part is bounded by an integer k>0. The Y^k poset was introduced in connection with generalized Schur functions and later shown to be isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group by a maximal parabolic subgroup. We prove a number of properties for $Y^k$ including that the covering relation is preserved when elements are translated by rectangular partitions with hook-length $k$. We highlight the order ideal generated by an $m\times n$ rectangular shape. This order ideal, L^k(m,n), reduces to L(m,n) for large k, and we prove it is isomorphic to the induced subposet of L(m,n) whose vertex set is restricted to elements with no more than k-m+1 parts smaller than m. We provide explicit formulas for the number of elements and the rank-generating function of L^k(m,n). We conclude with unimodality conjectures involving q-binomial coefficients and discuss how implications connect to recent work on sieved q-binomial coefficients.

Tableaux on k+1-cores, reduced words for affine permutations, and k-Schur expansions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $k$-Young lattice $Y^k$ is a partial order on partitions with no part larger than $k$. This weak subposet of the Young lattice originated from the study of the $k$-Schur functions(atoms) $s_λ^{(k)}$, symmetric functions that form a natural basis of the space spanned by homogeneous functions indexed by $k$-bounded partitions. The chains in the $k$-Young lattice are induced by a Pieri-type rule experimentally satisfied by the $k$-Schur functions. Here, using a natural bijection between $k$-bounded partitions and $k+1$-cores, we establish an algorithm for identifying chains in the $k$-Young lattice with certain tableaux on $k+1$ cores. This algorithm reveals that the $k$-Young lattice is isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_{k+1}$ by a maximal parabolic subgroup. From this, the conjectured $k$-Pieri rule implies that the $k$-Kostka matrix connecting the homogeneous basis $\{h_\la\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ to $\{s_\la^{(k)}\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ may now be obtained by counting appropriate classes of tableaux on $k+1$-cores. This suggests that the conjecturally positive $k$-Schur expansion coefficients for Macdonald polynomials (reducing to $q,t$-Kostka polynomials for large $k$) could be described by a $q,t$-statistic on these tableaux, or equivalently on reduced words for affine permutations.

Lattice congruences of the weak order
Published in Order, 21 (2004) no.4, 315-344. • View PublicationBIB
We study the congruence lattice of the poset of regions of a hyperplane arrangement, with particular emphasis on the weak order on a finite Coxeter group. Our starting point is a theorem from a previous paper which gives a geometric description of the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the poset of regions in terms of certain polyhedral decompositions of the hyperplanes. For a finite Coxeter system (W,S) and a subset K of S, let η_K:w \mapsto w_K be the projection onto the parabolic subgroup W_K. We show that the fibers of η_K constitute the smallest lattice congruence with 1\equiv s for every s\in(S-K). We give an algorithm for determining the congruence lattice of the weak order for any finite Coxeter group and for a finite Coxeter group of type A or B we define a directed graph on subsets or signed subsets such that the transitive closure of the directed graph is the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the weak order.

Card shuffling and the decomposition of tensor products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let H be a subgroup of a finite group G. We use Markov chains to quantify how large r should be so that the decomposition of the r tensor power of the representation of G on cosets on H behaves (after renormalization) like the regular representation of G. For the case where G is a symmetric group and H a parabolic subgroup, we find that this question is precisely equivalent to the question of how large r should be so that r iterations of a shuffling method randomize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth shape of a permutation. This equivalence is rather remarkable, if only because the representation theory problem is related to a reversible Markov chain on the set of representations of the symmetric group, whereas the card shuffling problem is related to a nonreversible Markov chain on the symmetric group. The equivalence is also useful, and results on card shuffling can be applied to yield sharp results about the decomposition of tensor powers.

The centralizer of two numbers under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k], the maximal parabolic subgroup of $S_k$, and generalized patterns
A natural generalization of single pattern avoidance is subset avoidance. A complete study of subset avoidance for the case k=3 is carried out in [SS]. For k>3 situation becomes more complicated, as the number of possible cases grows rapidly. Recently, several authors have considered the case of general k when T has some nice algebraic properties. Barcucci, Del Lungo, Pergola, and Pinzani in [BDPP) treated the case when $T=T_1$ is the centralizer of k-1 and k under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k]. Mansour and Vainshtein in [MVp] treated the case when $T=T_2$ is maximal parabolic group of $S_k$. Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see [BS]) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. In this paper we present an analogue with generalization for the case $T_1$ and for the case $T_2$ by using generalized patterns instead of classical patterns.
