On the Largest Part Size and Its Multiplicity of a Random Integer Partition
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $λ$ be a partition of the positive integer $n$ chosen umiformly at random among all such partitions. Let $L_n=L_n(λ)$ and $M_n=M_n(λ)$ be the largest part size and its multiplicity, respectively. For large $n$, we focus on a comparison between the partition statistics $L_n$ and $L_n M_n$. In terms of convergence in distribution, we show that they behave in the same way. However, it turns out that the expectation of $L_n M_n -L_n$ grows as fast as $\frac{1}{2}\log{n}$ We obtain a precise asymptotic expansion for this expectation and conclude with an open problem arising from this study.

Asymptotic Analysis of Expectations of Plane Partition Statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Assuming that a plane partition of the positive integer $n$ is chosen uniformly at random from the set of all such partitions, we propose a general asymptotic scheme for the computation of expectations of various plane partition statistics as $n$ becomes large. The generating functions that arise in this study are of the form $Q(x)F(x)$, where $Q(x)=\prod_{j=1}^\infty (1-x^j)^{-j}$ is the generating function for the number of plane partitions. We show how asymptotics of such expectations can be obtained directly from the asymptotic expansion of the function $F(x)$ around $x=1$. The representation of a plane partition as a solid diagram of volume $n$ allows interpretations of these statistics in terms of its dimensions and shape. As an application of our main result, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the expected values of the largest part (the height of the solid diagram) and the trace (the number of cubes in the wall on the main diagonal of the solid diagram). Our results are similar to those of Grabner et al. (2014) related to linear integer partition statistics. We base our study on Hayman's method for admissible power series.

On certain weighted 7-colored partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by Andrews' 2-colored generalized Frobenius partitions, we consider certain weighted 7-colored partition functions and establish some interesting Ramanujan-type identities and congruences. Moreover, we provide combinatorial interpretations of some congruences modulo 5 and 7. Finally, we study the properties of weighted 7-colored partitions weighted by the parity of certain partition statistics.

A Plancherel measure associated to set partitions and its limit
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent years increasing attention has been paid on the area of supercharacter theories, especially to those of the upper unitriangular group. A particular supercharacter theory, in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions, has several interesting properties, which make it object of further study. We define a natural generalization of the Plancherel measure, called superplancherel measure, and prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution. We also give a description of the asymptotical behavior of two set partition statistics related to the supercharacters. The study of these statistics when the set partitions are uniformly distributed has been done by Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades.

Ordered set partition statistics and the Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a recent generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the field of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we give evidence for the Delta Conjecture by proving a pair of conjectures of Wilson and Haglund-Remmel-Wilson which give equidistribution results for statistics related to inversion count and major index on objects related to ordered set partitions. Our results generalize the famous result of MacMahon that major index and inversion number share the same distribution on permutations.

Variation on a theme of Nathan Fine. New weighted partition identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We utilize false theta function results of Nathan Fine to discover three new partition identities involving weights. These relations connect Göllnitz--Gordon type partitions and partitions with distinct odd parts, partitions into distinct parts and ordinary partitions, and partitions with distinct odd parts where the smallest positive integer that is not a part of the partition is odd and ordinary partitions subject to some initial conditions, respectively. Some of our weights involve new partition statistics, one is defined as the number of different odd parts of a partition larger than or equal to a given value and another one is defined as the number of different even parts larger than the first integer that is not a part of the partition. Dedicated to our friend, Krishna Alladi, on his 60th birthday.

Weighted Rogers-Ramanujan Partitions and Dyson Crank
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we refine a weighted partition identity of Alladi. We write explicit formulas of generating functions for the number of partitions grouped with respect to a partition statistic other than the norm. We tie our weighted results and the different statistics with the crank of a partition. In particular, we prove that the number of partitions into even number of distinct parts whose odd-indexed parts' sum is n is equal to the number of partitions of n with non-negative crank.
Central Limit Theorems for some Set Partition Statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the conjectured limiting normality for the number of crossings of a uniformly chosen set partition of [n] = {1,2,...,n}. The arguments use a novel stochastic representation and are also used to prove central limit theorems for the dimension index and the number of levels.
Partition Statistics Equidistributed with the Number of Hook Difference One Cells
Let $λ$ be a partition, viewed as a Young diagram. We define the hook difference of a cell of $λ$ to be the difference of its leg and arm lengths. Define $h_{1,1}(λ)$ to be the number of cells of $λ$ with hook difference one. In the paper of Buryak and Feigin (arXiv:1206.5640), algebraic geometry is used to prove a generating function identity which implies that $h_{1,1}$ is equidistributed with $a_2$, the largest part of a partition that appears at least twice, over the partitions of a given size. In this paper, we propose a refinement of the theorem of Buryak and Feigin and prove some partial results using combinatorial methods. We also obtain a new formula for the q-Catalan numbers which naturally leads us to define a new q,t-Catalan number with a simple combinatorial interpretation.

Stabilization of coefficients for partition polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find that a wide variety of families of partition statistics stabilize in a fashion similar to $p_k(n)$, the number of partitions of n with k parts, which satisfies $p_k(n) = p_{k+1}(n + 1), k \geq n/2$. We bound the regions of stabilization, discuss variants on the phenomenon, and give the limiting sequence in many cases as the coefficients of a single-variable generating function. Examples include many statistics that have an Euler product form, partitions with prescribed subsums, and plane overpartitions.

Unimodality via Kronecker products
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present new proofs and generalizations of unimodality of the q-binomial coefficients \binom{n}{k}_q as polynomials in q. We use an algebraic approach by interpreting the differences between numbers of certain partitions as Kronecker coefficients of representations of S_n. Other applications of this approach include strict unimodality of the diagonal q-binomial coefficients and unimodality of certain partition statistics.
Closed expressions for averages of set partition statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In studying the enumerative theory of super characters' of the group of upper triangular matrices over a finite field we found that the moments (mean, variance and higher moments) of novel statistics on set partitions have simple closed expressions as linear combinations of shifted bell numbers. It is shown here that families of other statistics have similar moments. The coefficients in the linear combinations are polynomials in $n$. This allows exact enumeration of the moments for small $n$ to determine exact formulae for all $n$.

The toric h-vector of a cubical complex in terms of noncrossing partition statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a new and simple statistic on noncrossing partitions that expresses each coordinate of the toric $h$-vector of a cubical complex, written in the basis of the Adin $h$-vector entries, as the total weight of all noncrossing partitions. The same model may also be used to obtain a very simple combinatorial interpretation of the contribution of a cubical shelling component to the toric $h$-vector. In this model, a strengthening of the symmetry expressed by the Dehn-Sommerville equations may be derived from the self-duality of the noncrossing partition lattice, exhibited by the involution of Simion and Ullman.

Statistical Distributions and $q$-Analogues of $k$-Fibonacci Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study $q$-analogues of $k$-Fibonacci numbers that arise from weighted tilings of an $n\times1$ board with tiles of length at most $k$. The weights on our tilings arise naturally out of distributions of permutations statistics and set partitions statistics. We use these $q$-analogues to produce $q$-analogues of identities involving $k$-Fibonacci numbers. This is a natural extension of results of the first author and Sagan on set partitions and the first author and Mathisen on permutations. In this paper we give general $q$-analogues of $k$-Fibonacci identities for arbitrary weights that depend only on lengths and locations of tiles. We then determine weights for specific permutation or set partition statistics and use these specific weights and the general identities to produce specific identities.

Limits of Modified Higher (q,t)-Catalan Numbers
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20(3) (2013), #P4 • View PublicationBIB
The $q,t$-Catalan numbers can be defined using rational functions, geometry related to Hilbert schemes, symmetric functions, representation theory, Dyck paths, partition statistics, or Dyck words. After decades of intensive study, it was eventually proved that all these definitions are equivalent. In this paper, we study the similar situation for higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers, where the equivalence of the algebraic and combinatorial definitions is still conjectural. We compute the limits of several versions of the modified higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers and show that these limits equal the generating function for integer partitions. We also identify certain coefficients of the higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers as enumerating suitable integer partitions, and we make some conjectures on the homological significance of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator.

Families of Quasimodular Forms and Jacobi Forms: The Crank Statistic for Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Families of quasimodular forms arise naturally in many situations such as curve counting on Abelian surfaces and counting ramified covers of orbifolds. In many cases the family of quasimodular forms naturally arises as the coefficients of a Taylor expansion of a Jacobi form. In this note we give examples of such expansions that arise in the study of partition statistics. The crank partition statistic has gathered much interest recently. For instance, Atkin and Garvan showed that the generating functions for the moments of the crank statistic are quasimodular forms. The two variable generating function for the crank partition statistic is a Jacobi form. Exploiting the structure inherent in the Jacobi theta function we construct explicit expressions for the functions of Atkin and Garvan. Furthermore, this perspective opens the door for further investigation including a study of the moments in arithmetic progressions. We conduct a thorough study of the crank statistic restricted to a residue class modulo 2.

Permutation Statistics and $q$-Fibonacci Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Goyt and Sagan studied distributions of certain set partition statistics over pattern restricted sets of set partitions that were counted by the Fibonacci numbers. Their study produced a class of $q$-Fibonacci numbers, which they related to $q$-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and Cigler. In this paper we will study the distributions of some Mahonian statistics over pattern restricted sets of permutations. We will give bijective proofs connecting some of our $q$-Fibonacci numbers to those of Carlitz, Cigler, Goyt and Sagan. We encode these permutations as words and use a weight to produce bijective proofs of $q$-Fibonacci identities. Finally, we study the distribution of some of these statistics on pattern restricted permutations that West showed were counted by even Fibonacci numbers.

Rank-Crank type PDE's and non-holomorphic Jacobi forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show how Rank-Crank type PDE's (first found by Atkin and Garvan) occur naturally in the framework of non-holomorphic Jacobiforms and find an infinite family of such differential equations. As an application we show an infinite family of congruences for odd Durfee symbols, a partition statistic introduced by George Andrews.

Partition statistics and quasiweak Maass forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews recently introduced k-marked Durfee symbols, which are a generalization of partitions that are connected to moments of Dyson's rank statistic. He used these connections to find identities relating their generating functions as well as to prove Ramanujan-type congruences for these objects and find relations between. In this paper we show that the hypergeometric generating functions for these objects are natural examples of quasimock theta functions, which are defined as the holomorphic parts of weak Maass forms and their derivatives. In particular, these generating functions may be viewed as analogs of Ramanujan's mock theta functions with arbitrarily high weight. We use the automorphic properties to prove the existence of infinitely many congruences for the Durfee symbols. Furthermore, we show that as k varies, the modularity of the k-marked Durfee symbols is precisely dictated by the case k=2. Finally, we use this relation in order to prove the existence of general congruences for rank moments in terms of level one modular forms of bounded weight.
