On the coefficients of $q$-series and modular forms
In this Ph.D dissertation (University of Virginia, 2022), we prove results about the coefficients of partition-theoretic generating functions and of coefficients of integer weight modular forms. Using various forms of the circle method, we prove results about the distribution of partition statistics in residue classes modulo $t$. For example, we prove that the parts of partitions into distinct parts are equidistributed modulo $t$ (but that certain biases occur nonetheless) and that the number of $t$-hooks in a partition is generally not equidistributed modulo primes. We also obtain exact formulas for the $t$-hook counting functions using modular transformation laws. We also employ the circle method to prove a conjecture of Coll, Mayers and Mayers that the $q$-series $(q, -q^3; q^4)_\infty^{-1}$ has non-negative coefficients. These topics cover Chapters 3-6. Chapter 7 gives an application of partition asymptotics for proving hyperbolicity of Jensen polynomials using the criterion of Griffin, Ono, Rolen and Zagier. Chapter 8 gives a new method for solving equations of the form $a_f(n) = α$, where $α\in \mathbb{Z}$ is odd and $a_f(n)$ are the coefficients of a normalized Hecke eigenform with trivial mod 2 Galois representation. The method is based on the primitive prime divisor theorem of Bilu, Hanrot, and Voutier along with methods in effective algebraic geometry for elliptic curves, hyperelliptic curves, and Thue equations.
The Ariki--Koike algebras and Rogers--Ramanujan type partitions
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. 60 (2024), no. 2, 491-540 • View PublicationBIB
In 2000, Ariki and Mathas showed that the simple modules of the Ariki--Koike algebras $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbb{C},q;Q_1,\ldots, Q_m}\big(G(m, 1, n)\big)$ (when the parameters are roots of unity and $q\neq 1$) are labeled by the so-called Kleshchev multipartitions. This together with Ariki's categorification theorem enabled Ariki and Mathas to obtain the generating function for the number of Kleshchev multipartitions by making use of the Weyl--Kac character formula. In this paper, we revisit this generating function for the $q=-1$ case. This $q=-1$ case is particularly interesting, for the corresponding Kleshchev multipartitions have a very close connection to generalized Rogers--Ramanujan type partitions when $Q_1=\cdots=Q_a=-1$ and $Q_{a+1}=\cdots =Q_m =1$. Based on this connection, we provide an analytic proof of the result of Ariki and Mathas for $q=Q_1=\cdots Q_a=-1$ and $Q_{a+1}=\cdots =Q_m =1$. Our second objective is to investigate simple modules of the Ariki--Koike algebra in a fixed block. It is known that these simple modules in a fixed block are labeled by the Kleshchev multiparitions with a fixed partition residue statistic. This partition statistic is also studied in the works of Berkovich, Garvan, and Uncu. Employing their results, we provide two bivariate generating function identities when $m=2$.

A combinatorial proof of Buryak-Feigin-Nakajima
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 30, Issue 3 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Buryak, Feigin and Nakajima computed a generating function for a family of partition statistics by using the geometry of the $Z/cZ$ fixed point sets in the Hilbert scheme of points on $C^2$. Loehr and Warrington had already shown how a similar observation by Haiman using the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on $C^2$ could be made purely combinatorial. We extend the techniques of Loehr and Warrington to also account for cores and quotients. In particular, we construct a multigraph $M_{r,s,c}$ that is a direct refinement of Loehr and Warrington's multigraphs $M_{r,s}$, retains the relevant partition data, and is preserved by an involution $I_{r,s,c}$ which we use to prove the equidistribution of a family of partition statistics. As a consequence, we obtain a purely combinatorial proof of a result of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima. More precisely, we define a family of partition statistics $\{h_{x,c}^+, x\in [0,\infty)\}$ and give a combinatorial proof that for all $x$ and all positive integers $c$, \begin{equation*} \sum q^{|λ|}t^{h_{x,c}^+(λ)}=q^{|μ|}\prod_{i\geq 1}\frac{1}{(1-q^{ic})^{c-1}}\prod_{j\geq 1}\frac{1}{1-q^{jc}t}, \end{equation*} where the sum ranges over all partitions $λ$ with $c$-core $μ$. Section 2 recalls background on partitions, cores and quotients and is written with those new to the subject in mind.
Hook length and symplectic content in partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The dimension of an irreducible representation of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2n)$, or $SO(n)$ is given by the respective hook-length and content formulas for the corresponding partition. The first author, inspired by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula, conjectured combinatorial interpretations of analogous expressions involving hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. We prove special cases of these conjectures. In the process, we show that partitions of $n$ with all symplectic contents non-zero are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into distinct even parts. We also present Beck-type companions to this identity. In this context, we give the parity of the number of partitions into distinct parts with odd (respectively, even) rank. We study the connection between the sum of hook-lengths and the sum of inversions in the binary representation of a partition. In addition, we introduce a new partition statistic, the $x$-ray list of a partition, and explore its connection with distinct partitions as well as partitions maximally contained in a given staircase partition.

Proofs of some conjectures of Chan-Mao-Osburn on Beck's partition statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, George Beck introduced two partition statistics $NT(m,j,n)$ and $M_ω(m,j,n)$, which denote the total number of parts in the partition of $n$ with rank congruent to $m$ modulo $j$ and the total number of ones in the partition of $n$ with crank congruent to $m$ modulo $j$, respectively. Andrews proved a congruence on $NT(m,5,n)$ which was conjectured by Beck. Very recently, Chan, Mao and Osburn established a number of Andrews-Beck type congruences and posed several conjectures involving $NT(m,j,n)$ and $M_ω(m,j,n)$. Some of those conjectures were proved by Chern and Mao. In this paper, we confirm the remainder three conjectures of Chan-Mao-Osburn and two conjectures due to Mao. We also present two new conjectures on $M_ω(m,j,n)$ and $NT(m,j,n)$.

A bijective proof of a generalization of the non-negative crank--odd mex identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent works of Andrews--Newman and Hopkins--Sellers unveil an interesting relation between two partition statistics, the crank and the mex. They state that, for a positive integer $n$, there are as many partitions of $n$ with non-negative crank as partitions of $n$ with odd mex. In this paper, we give a bijective proof of a generalization of this identity provided by Hopkins, Sellers, and Stanton. Our method uses an alternative definition of the Durfee decomposition, whose combinatorial link to the crank was recently studied by Hopkins, Sellers, and Yee.

Dyson's crank and unimodal compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The crank is a partition statistic requested by Dyson in 1944 in order to combinatorially prove a Ramanujan congruence of Euler's partition function $p(n)$. In this paper, we provide connections between Dyson's crank and unimodal compositions. Somewhat unrelated, we give a combinatorial proof of a new truncated Euler pentagonal number theorem due to Xia and Zhao.

Zero Attractors of Partition Polynomials
A partition polynomial is a refinement of the partition number p(n) whose coefficients count some special partition statistic. Just as partition numbers have useful asymptotics so do partition polynomials. In fact, their asymptotics determine the limiting behavior of their zeros which form a network of curves inside the unit disk. An important new feature in their study requires a detailed analysis of. the \root dilogarithm" given as the real part of the square root of the usual dilogarithm.

Self-conjugate $t$-core partitions and applications
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 82(2) (2022), 212--227 • Search Publication
Partition theory abounds with bijections between different types of partitions. One of the most famous partition bijections maps each self-conjugate partition of a positive integer $n$ to a partition of $n$ into distinct odd parts, and vice versa. Here we prove new necessary and sufficient conditions for a self-conjugate partition to be $t$-core, in terms of only the parts of the corresponding partition into distinct odd parts, by proving a new hook length formula. Corollaries of these results include new applications of $t$-core self-conjugate partitions to subsets of the natural numbers, due to the recent investigation of a new partition statistic called the supernorm by the first author, Just, and Schneider, as well as many results on $t$-cores by Bringmann, Kane, Males, Ono, Raji, and others. We provide several examples of these applications, one of which gives a new formula for certain families of Hurwitz class numbers.

Combinatorial Perspectives on the Crank and Mex Partition Statistics
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 29 (2022) P2.11 • View PublicationBIB
Several authors have recently considered the smallest positive part missing from an integer partition, known as the minimum excludant or mex. In this work, we revisit and extend connections between Dyson's crank statistics, the mex, and Frobenius symbols, with a focus on combinatorial proof techniques. One highlight is a generating function expression for the number of partitions with a bounded crank that does not include an alternating sum. This leads to a combinatorial interpretation involving types of Durfee rectangles.

Chain decompositions of q,t-Catalan numbers: tail extensions and flagpole partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is part of an ongoing investigation of the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$. We develop a structure theory for integer partitions based on the partition statistics dinv, deficit, and minimum triangle height. Our goal is to decompose the infinite set of partitions of deficit $k$ into a disjoint union of chains $\mathcal{C}_μ$ indexed by partitions of size $k$. Among other structural properties, these chains can be paired to give refinements of the famous symmetry property $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)=\textrm{Cat}_n(t,q)$. Previously, we introduced a map that builds the tail part of each chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$. Our first main contribution here is to extend this map to construct larger second-order tails for each chain. Second, we introduce new classes of partitions called flagpole partitions and generalized flagpole partitions. Third, we describe a recursive construction for building the chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$ for a (generalized) flagpole partition $μ$, assuming that the chains indexed by certain specific smaller partitions (depending on $μ$) are already known. We also give some enumerative and asymptotic results for flagpole partitions and their generalized versions.

Dyson's Crank and the Mex of Integer Partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 185 (2022) 105523 • View PublicationBIB
Andrews and Newman have recently introduced the notion of the mex of a partition, the smallest positive integer that is not a part. The concept has been used since at least 2011, though, with connections to Frobenius symbols. Recently the parity of the mex has been associated to the crank statistic named by Dyson in 1944. In this note, we extend and strengthen the connection between the crank and mex (along with a new generaliztion of the mex) by proving a number of properties that naturally relate these partition statistics.
On the distribution of the major index on standard Young tableaux
The study of permutation and partition statistics is a classical topic in enumerative combinatorics. The major index statistic on permutations was introduced a century ago by Percy MacMahon in his seminal works. In this extended abstract, we study the well-known generalization of the major index to standard Young tableaux. We present several new results. In one direction, we introduce and study two partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes, and has representation-theoretic consequences, both for the symmetric group and for Shephard-Todd groups. In a different direction, we consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, "aft," generalizing earlier results of Canfield-Janson-Zeilberger, Chen-Wang-Wang, and others. We also study unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit properties.

Large Parts of Random Plane Partitions: a Poisson Limit Theorem
We propose an aproach for asymptotic analysis of plane partition statistics related to counts of parts whose sizes exceed a certain suitably chosen level. In our study, we use the concept of conjugate trace of a plane partition of the positive integer $n$, introduced by Stanley in 1973. We derive generating functions and determine the asymptotic behavior of counts of large parts using a general scheme based on the saddle point method. In this way, we are able to prove a Poisson limit theorem for the number of parts of a random and uniformly chosen plane partition of $n$, whose sizes are greater than a function $m=m(n)$ as $n\to\infty$. An explicit expression for $m(n)$ is also given.

Algebraic Relations Between Partition Functions and the $j$-Function
Published in Res. number theory 6, 2 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We obtain identities and relationships between the modular $j$-function, the generating functions for the classical partition function and the Andrews $spt$-function, and two functions related to unimodal sequences and a new partition statistic we call the "signed triangular weight" of a partition. These results follow from the closed formula we obtain for the Hecke action on a distinguished harmonic Maass form $\mathscr{M}(τ)$ defined by Bringmann in her work on the Andrews $spt$-function. This formula involves a sequence of polynomials in $j(τ)$, through which we ultimately arrive at expressions for the coefficients of the $j$-function purely in terms of these combinatorial quantities.

Colored partitions and the hooklength formula: partition statistic identities
We give relations between the joint distributions of multiple hook lengths and of frequencies and part sizes in partitions, extending prior work in this area. These results are discovered by investigating truncations of the Han/Nekrasov-Okounkov hooklength formula and of (k,j)-colored partitions, a unification of k-colored partitions and overpartitions. We establish the observed relations at the constant and linear terms for all n, and for j=2 in their quadratic term, with the associated hook/frequency identities. Further results of this type seem likely.
