The 2-adic valuation of plane partitions and totally symmetric partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper confirms a conjecture of Amdeberhan and Moll that the power of 2 dividing the number of plane partitions in an n-cube is greater than the power of 2 dividing the number of totally symmetric plane partitions in the same cube when n is even, and less when n is odd.

On the Ramified Optimal Allocation Problem
Published in Networks & Heterogeneous Media, 2013, 8(2): 591-624 • View PublicationBIB
This paper proposes an optimal allocation problem with ramified transport technology in a spatial economy. Ramified transportation is used to model the transport economy of scale in group transportation observed widely in both nature and efficiently designed transport systems of branching structures. The ramified allocation problem aims at finding an optimal allocation plan as well as an associated optimal allocation path to minimize overall cost of transporting commodity from factories to households. This problem differentiates itself from existing ramified transportation literature in that the distribution of production among factories is not fixed but endogenously determined as observed in many allocation practices. It's shown that due to the transport economy of scale in ramified transportation, each optimal allocation plan corresponds equivalently to an optimal assignment map from households to factories. This optimal assignment map provides a natural partition of both households and allocation paths. We develop methods of marginal transportation analysis and projectional analysis to study properties of optimal assignment maps. These properties are then related to the search for an optimal assignment map in the context of state matrix.

Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations". Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions. Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.

On the van der Waerden numbers w(2;3,t)
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 174: 27-51 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
We present results and conjectures on the van der Waerden numbers w(2;3,t) and on the new palindromic van der Waerden numbers pdw(2;3,t). We have computed the new number w(2;3,19) = 349, and we provide lower bounds for 20 <= t <= 39, where for t <= 30 we conjecture these lower bounds to be exact. The lower bounds for 24 <= t <= 30 refute the conjecture that w(2;3,t) <= t^2, and we present an improved conjecture. We also investigate regularities in the good partitions (certificates) to better understand the lower bounds. Motivated by such reglarities, we introduce *palindromic van der Waerden numbers* pdw(k; t_0,...,t_{k-1}), defined as ordinary van der Waerden numbers w(k; t_0,...,t_{k-1}), however only allowing palindromic solutions (good partitions), defined as reading the same from both ends. Different from the situation for ordinary van der Waerden numbers, these "numbers" need actually to be pairs of numbers. We compute pdw(2;3,t) for 3 <= t <= 27, and we provide lower bounds, which we conjecture to be exact, for t <= 35. All computations are based on SAT solving, and we discuss the various relations between SAT solving and Ramsey theory. Especially we introduce a novel (open-source) SAT solver, the tawSolver, which performs best on the SAT instances studied here, and which is actually the original DLL-solver, but with an efficient implementation and a modern heuristic typical for look-ahead solvers (applying the theory developed in the SAT handbook article of the second author).
Congruence properties of binary partition functions

Let A be a finite subset of the natural numbers containing 0, and let f(n) denote the number of ways to write n in the form $\sum e_j2^j$, where $\e_j \in A$. We show that there exists a computable T = T(A) so that the sequence (f(n) mod 2) is periodic with period T. Variations and generalizations of this problem are also discussed.
Characterizing partition functions of the vertex model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize which graph parameters are partition functions of a vertex model over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 (in the sense of de la Harpe and Jones). We moreover characterize when the vertex model can be taken so that its moment matrix has finite rank.

The shape of a random affine Weyl group element and random core partitions
Published in Annals of Probability 2015, Vol. 43, No. 4, 1643-1662 • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and ${\hat{W}}$ be the corresponding affine Weyl group. We show that a large element in ${\hat{W}}$, randomly generated by (reduced) multiplication by simple generators, almost surely has one of $|W|$-specific shapes. Equivalently, a reduced random walk in the regions of the affine Coxeter arrangement asymptotically approaches one of $|W|$-many directions. The coordinates of this direction, together with the probabilities of each direction can be calculated via a Markov chain on $W$. Our results, applied to type $\tilde{A}_{n-1}$, show that a large random $n$-core obtained from the natural growth process has a limiting shape which is a piecewise-linear graph. In this case, our random process is a periodic analogue of TASEP, and our limiting shapes can be compared with Rost's theorem on the limiting shape of TASEP.

Statistical model and BPS D4-D2-D0 counting
Published in JHEP 1105:072,2011 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a statistical model that correctly reproduces the BPS partition function of D4-D2-D0 bound states on the resolved conifold. We prove that the known partition function of the BPS indices is reproduced by the counting "triangular partitions" problem. The wall-crossing phenomena in our model are also studied.

Semi-algebraic partition and basis of Borel-Moore homology of hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe an explicit semi-algebraic partition for the complement of a real hyperplane arrangement such that each piece is contractible and so that the pieces form a basis of Borel-Moore homology. We also give an explicit correspondence between the de Rham cohomology and the Borel-Moore homology.

Triangle-intersecting families on eight vertices
Simonovits and Sós conjectured that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{\binom{n}{2}-3}$. Their conjecture has recently been proved using spectral methods. We provide an elementary proof of the special case of $8$ vertices using a partition argument.

Inequalities for full rank differences of 2-marked Durfee symbols
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we obtain infinitely many non-trivial identities and inequalities between full rank differences for 2-marked Durfee symbols, a generalization of partitions introduced by Andrews. A certain strict inequality, which almost always holds, shows that identities for Dyson's rank, similar to those proven by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer, are quite rare. By showing an analogous strict inequality, we show that such non-trivial identities are also rare for the full rank, but on the other hand we obtain an infinite family of non-trivial identities, contrasting the partition theoretic case.

Destroying Non-Complete Regular Components in Graph Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if $G$ is a graph and $r_1, ..., r_k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ such that $\sum_{i=1}^k r_i \geq Δ(G) + 2 - k$ then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into sets $V_1, ..., V_k$ such that $Δ(G[V_i]) \leq r_i$ and $G[V_i]$ contains no non-complete $r_i$-regular components for each $1 \leq i \leq k$. In particular, the vertex set of any graph $G$ can be partitioned into $\left \lceil \frac{Δ(G) + 2}{3} \right \rceil$ sets, each of which induces a disjoint union of triangles and paths.

The strong-connectivity of word-representable digraphs
A word-graph Gw is a digraph represented by a word w such that the vertex-set V(Gw) is the alphabet of w and the edge-set E(Gw) is determined by non-identical adjacent letter pairs in w. In this paper we study the strong-connectivity of word-graphs. Our main result is that the number of strongly connected word-graphs represented by l-words of over an n-alphabet can be expressed via a recurrence relation T(l,n) on the Stirling numbers of the second kind using a link between word partitions and digraph connectivity.

Geometry and Combinatorics of Crystal Melting

We survey geometrical and especially combinatorial aspects of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants (also called BPS invariants) for toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, emphasizing the role of plane partitions and their generalizations in the recently proposed crystal melting model. We also comment on equivalence with a vicious walker model and the matrix model representation of the partition function.

On the Connectivity of Bipartite Distance-Balanced Graphs
A connected graph $\G$ is said to be {\it distance-balanced} whenever for any pair of adjacent vertices $u,v$ of $\G$ the number of vertices closer to $u$ than to $v$ is equal to the number of vertices closer to $v$ than to $u$. In [Bipartite graphs with balanced $(a,b)$-partitions, {\em Ars Combin.} {\bf 51} (1999), 113-119] Handa asked whether every bipartite distance-balanced graph, that is not a cycle, is 3-connected. In this paper the Handa question is answered in the negative. Moreover, we show that a minimal bipartite distance-balanced graph, that is not a cycle and is not 3-connected, has 18 vertices and is unique. In addition, we give a complete classification of non-3-connected bipartite distance-balanced graphs for which the minimal distance between two vertices in a 2-cut is three. All such graphs are regular and for each $k \geq 3$ there exists an infinite family of such graphs which are $k$-regular. Furthermore, we determine a number of structural properties that a bipartite distance-balanced graph, which is not 3-connected, must have. As an application, we give a positive answer to the Handa question for the subfamily of bipartite strongly distance-balanced graphs.

Beyond the Expanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
Expander graphs are widely used in communication problems and construction of error correcting codes. In such graphs, information gets through very quickly. Typically, it is not true for social or biological networks, though we may find a partition of the vertices such that the induced subgraphs on them and the bipartite subgraphs between any pair of them exhibit regular behavior of information flow within or between the subsets. Implications between spectral and regularity properties are discussed.

A poset fiber theorem for doubly Cohen-Macaulay posets and its applications to non-crossing partitions and injective words
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies topological properties of the lattices of non-crossing partitions of types A and B and of the poset of injective words. Specifically, it is shown that after the removal of the bottom and top elements (if existent) these posets are doubly Cohen-Macaulay. This strengthens the well-known facts that these posets are Cohen-Macaulay. Our results rely on a new poset fiber theorem which turns out to be a useful tool to prove double (homotopy) Cohen-Macaulayness of a poset. Applications to complexes of injective words are also included.

Touchard-Riordan formulas, T-fractions, and Jacobi's triple product identity
Published in Ramanujan Journal 30(3) (2013), 341--378 • View PublicationBIB
Touchard-Riordan-like formulas are some expressions appearing in enumeration problems and as moments of orthogonal polynomials. We begin this article with a new combinatorial approach to prove these kind of formulas, related with integer partitions. This gives a new perspective on the original result of Touchard and Riordan. But the main goal is to give a combinatorial proof of a Touchard-Riordan--like formula for q-secant numbers discovered by the first author. An interesting limit case of these objects can be directly interpreted in terms of partitions, so that we obtain a connection between the formula for q-secant numbers, and a particular case of Jacobi's triple product identity. Building on this particular case, we obtain a "finite version" of the triple product identity. It is in the form of a finite sum which is given a combinatorial meaning, so that the triple product identity can be obtained by taking the limit. Here the proof is non-combinatorial and relies on a functional equation satisfied by a T-fraction. Then from this result on the triple product identity, we derive a whole new family of Touchard-Riordan--like formulas whose combinatorics is not yet understood. Eventually, we prove a Touchard-Riordan--like formula for a q-analog of Genocchi numbers, which is related with Jacobi's identity for (q;q)^3 rather than the triple product identity.
Generalized hook lengths in symbols and partitions
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, vol 36 (2011), no. 2, pp. 309-332 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present, for any integer d, a description of the set of hooks in a d-symbol. We then introduce generalized hook length functions for a d-symbol, and prove a general result about them, involving the core and quotient of the symbol. We list some applications, for example to the well-known hook lengths in integer partitions. This leads in particular to a generalization of a relative hook formula for the degree of characters of the symmetric group discovered by G. Malle and G. Navarro in [3].

On bar lengths in partitions
Published in Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, Vol 55 (2012), 1-16 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present, given a odd integer $d$, a decomposition of the multiset of bar lengths of a bar partition $λ$ as the union of two multisets, one consisting of the bar lengths in its $\bar{d}$-core partition $\bar{c}_d(λ)$ and the other consisting of modified bar lengths in its $\bar{d}$-quotient partition. In particular, we obtain that the multiset of bar lengths in $\bar{c}_d(λ)$ is a sub-multiset of the multiset of bar lengths in $λ$. Also we obtain a relative bar formula for the degrees of spin characters of the Schur extensions of the symmetric group. The proof involves a recent similar result for partitions, proved in [1].
