The eigenvalue spacing of a uniformly chosen random finite unipotent matrix in its permutation action on lines is studied. We obtain bounds for the mean number of eigenvalues lying in a fixed arc of the unit circle and offer an approach toward other asymptotics. For the case of all unipotent matrices, the proof gives a probabilistic interpretation to identities of Macdonald from symmetric function theory. For the case of upper triangular matrices over a finite field, connections between symmetric function theory and a probabilistic growth algorithm of Borodin emerge..

We present a number of results relating partial Cauchy-Littlewood sums, integrals over the compact classical groups, and increasing subsequences of permutations. These include: integral formulae for the distribution of the longest increasing subsequence of a random involution with constrained number of fixed points; new formulae for partial Cauchy-Littlewood sums, as well as new proofs of old formulae; relations of these expressions to orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle; and explicit bases for invariant spaces of the classical groups, together with appropriate generalizations of the straightening algorithm.
A self-dual poset on objects counted by the Catalan numbers and a type-B analogue
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these permutation posets follow, including self-duality and the strong Sperner property. We also discuss posets $Q^A_n$ and $Q^B_n$ similarly associated with noncrossing partitions, defined by means of the excedence sets of suitable pattern-avoiding subsets of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups.
Random Matrices and Random Permutations
We prove the conjecture of Baik, Deift, and Johansson which says that with respect to the Plancherel measure on the set of partitions of $n$, the 1st, 2nd, and so on, rows behave, suitably scaled, like the 1st, 2nd, and so on, eigenvalues of a Gaussian random Hermitian matrix as $n$ goes to infinity. Our proof is based on an interplay between maps on surfaces and ramified coverings of the sphere. We also establish a connection of this problem with intersection theory on the moduli spaces of curves.

We prove that the number of permutations which avoid 132-patterns and have exactly one 123-pattern equals (n-2)2^(n-3). We then give a bijection onto the set of permutations which avoid 123-patterns and have exactly one 132-pattern. Finally, we show that the number of permutations which contain exactly one 123-pattern and exactly one 132-pattern is (n-3)(n-4)2^(n-5).
The Number of Permutations With A Prescribed Number of 132 and 123 Patterns
Here we present the reasoning behind, and program to find, the generating functions for the number of permutations in the title. The article duals as the "accompanying" Maple package.

For words of length $n$, generated by independent geometric random variables, we consider the mean and variance of the number of inversions and of a parameter of Knuth from permutation in situ. In this way, $q$--analogues for these parameters from the usual permutation model are obtained.
Transitive factorisations in the symmetric group, and combinatorial aspects of singularity theory

We consider the determination of the number $c_k(α)$ of ordered factorisations of an arbitrary permutation on n symbols, with cycle distribution $α$, into k-cycles such that the factorisations have minimal length and such that the group generated by the factors acts transitively on the n symbols. The case k=2 corresponds to the celebrated result of Hurwitz on the number of topologically distinct holomorphic functions on the 2-sphere that preserve a given number of elementary branch point singularities. In this case the monodromy group is the alternating group, and this is another case that, in principle, is of considerable interest.
We conjecture an explicit form, for arbitrary k, for the generating series for $c_k(α)$, and prove that it holds for factorisations of permutations with one, two and three cycles ($α$ is a partition with at most three parts). The generating series is naturally expressed in terms of the symmetric functions dual to those introduced by Macdonald for the ``top'' connection coefficients in the class algebra of the symmetric group.
Our approach is to determine a differential equation for the generating series from a combinatorial analysis of the creation and annihilation of cycles in products under the minimality condition.
A Generalization of Redfield's Master Theorem
Generalizations of Redfield's master theorem and superposition theorem are proved by using decomposition of the tensor product of several induced monomial representations of the symmetric group $S_d$ into transitive constituents. As direct consequences, one obtains several graphical corollaries. Given graphs $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, with $d$ vertices, together with their automorphism groups $W_1\leq S_d,\hdots, W_k\leq S_d$, one can find the number of superpositions of $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, whose automorphism groups satisfy one of the following conditions: (1) the groups consist of even permutations; (2) the groups are trivial, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is cyclic; (3) the groups are of odd order, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is dihedral and its order is not divisible by 4; (4) the groups are of order dividing a natural number $r$, in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal solvable subgroup of order $r$, such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $r$; (5) the groups are $q$-groups ($q$ is a prime), in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal $q$-subgroup such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $q$.
A Generalization of Polya's Enumeration Theorem or the Secret Life of Certain Index Sets
Polya's fundamental enumeration theorem is generalized in terms of Schur-Macdonald's theory (S-MT) of invariant matrices. Given a permutation group $W\leq S_d$ and a one-dimensional character $χ$ of $W$, the polynomial functor $F_χ$ corresponding via S-MT to the induced monomial representation $U_χ= ind_W^{S_d}(χ)$ of $S_d$, is studied. It turns out that the characteristic $ch(F_χ)$ is the weighted inventory of some set $J(χ)$ of $W$-orbits in the integer-valued hypercube $[0,\infty)^d$. The elements of $J(χ) can be distinguished among all $W$-orbits by a maximum property. The identity $ch(F_χ) = ch(U_χ)$ of both characteristics is a consequence of S-MT. Polya's theorem can be obtained from the above identity by specialization $χ=1_W$, where $1_W$ is the unit character of $W$.
A combinatorial proof of the log-concavity of the numbers of permutations with $k$ runs
We combinatorially prove that the number $R(n,k)$ of permutations of length $n$ having $k$ runs is a log-concave sequence in $k$, for all $n$. We also give a new combinatorial proof for the log-concavity of the Eulerian numbers.

We compute the limit distribution for (centered and scaled) length of the longest increasing subsequence of random colored permutations. The limit distribution function is a power of that for usual random permutations computed recently by Baik, Deift, and Johansson (math.CO/9810105). In two--colored case our method provides a different proof of a similar result by Tracy and Widom about longest increasing subsequences of signed permutations (math.CO/9811154).
Our main idea is to reduce the `colored' problem to the case of usual random permutations using certain combinatorial results and elementary probabilistic arguments.
On the distribution of the length of the second row of a Young diagram under Plancherel measure

We investigate the probability distribution of the length of the second row of a Young diagram of size $N$ equipped with Plancherel measure. We obtain an expression for the generating function of the distribution in terms of a derivative of an associated Fredholm determinant, which can then be used to show that as $N\to\infty$ the distribution converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution [TW] for the second largest eigenvalue of a random GUE matrix. This paper is a sequel to [BDJ], where we showed that as $N\to\infty$ the distribution of the length of the first row of a Young diagram, or equivalently, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation, converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution [TW] for the largest eigenvalue of a random GUE matrix.
Recursions, formulas, and graph-theoretic interpretations of ramified coverings of the sphere by surfaces of genus 0 and 1
We derive a closed-form expression for all genus 1 Hurwitz numbers, and give a simple new graph-theoretic interpretation of Hurwitz numbers in genus 0 and 1. (Hurwitz numbers essentially count irreducible genus g covers of the sphere, with arbitrary specified branching over one point, simple branching over other specified points, and no other branching. The problem is equivalent to counting transitive factorisations of permutations into transpositions.) These results prove a conjecture of Goulden and Jackson, and extend results of Hurwitz and many others.
An Infinite Antichain of Permutations
We constructively prove that the partially ordered set of finite permutations ordered by deletion of entries contains an infinite antichain.

This paper is concerned with certain connections between the ensemble of n x n unitary matrices -- specifically the characteristic function of the random variable tr(U) -- and combinatorics -- specifically Ulam's problem concerning the distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in permutation groups -- and the appearance of Painleve functions in the answers to apparently unrelated questions. Among the results is a representation in terms of a Painleve V function for the characteristic function of tr(U) and (using recent results of Baik, Deift and Johansson) an expression in terms of a Painleve II function for the limiting distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in the hyperoctahedral group.
A sefl-dual poset on objects counted by the Catalan numbers
We examine the poset $P$ of 132-avoiding $n$-permutations ordered by descents. We show that this poset is the "coarsening" of the well-studied poset $Q$ of noncrossing partitions . In other words, if $x<y$ in $Q$, then $f(y)<f(x)$ in $P$, where $f$ is the canonical bijection from the set of noncrossing partitions onto that of 132-avoiding permutations. This enables us to prove many properties of $P$.

Let n >= 2 be an integer and consider the set T_n of n by n permutation matrices pi for which pi_{ij}=0 for j>=i+2. In this paper we study the convex hull of T_n, which we denote by P_n. P_n is a polytope of dimension binom{n}{2}. Our main purpose is to provide evidence for the following conjecture concerning its volume. Let v_n denote the minimum volume of a simplex with vertices in the affine lattice spanned by T_n. Then the volume of P_n is v_n times the product for i varying from 0 to n-2 of frac{1}{i+1} binom{2i}{i}. That is, P_n is the product of v_n and the first n-1 Catalan numbers.
We also give a related result on the Ehrhart polynomial of P_n.

The authors consider the length, $l_N$, of the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation of $N$ numbers. The main result in this paper is a proof that the distribution function for $l_N$, suitably centered and scaled, converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution [TW1] of the largest eigenvalue of a random GUE matrix. The authors also prove convergence of moments. The proof is based on the steepest decent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, introduced by Deift and Zhou in 1993 [DZ1] in the context of integrable systems. The applicability of the Riemann-Hilbert technique depends, in turn, on the determinantal formula of Gessel [Ge] for the Poissonization of the distribution function of $l_N$.
Renormalization automated by Hopf algebra

It was recently shown that the renormalization of quantum field theory is organized by the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted trees, whose coproduct identifies the divergences requiring subtraction and whose antipode achieves this. We automate this process in a few lines of recursive symbolic code, which deliver a finite renormalized expression for any Feynman diagram. We thus verify a representation of the operator product expansion, which generalizes Chen's lemma for iterated integrals. The subset of diagrams whose forest structure entails a unique primitive subdivergence provides a representation of the Hopf algebra ${\cal H}_R$ of undecorated rooted trees. Our undecorated Hopf algebra program is designed to process the 24,213,878 BPHZ contributions to the renormalization of 7,813 diagrams, with up to 12 loops. We consider 10 models, each in 9 renormalization schemes. The two simplest models reveal a notable feature of the subalgebra of Connes and Moscovici, corresponding to the commutative part of the Hopf algebra ${\cal H}_T$ of the diffeomorphism group: it assigns to Feynman diagrams those weights which remove zeta values from the counterterms of the minimal subtraction scheme. We devise a fast algorithm for these weights, whose squares are summed with a permutation factor, to give rational counterterms.
