An order on circular permutations

Motivation coming from the study of affine Weyl groups, a structure of ranked poset is defined on the set of circular permutations in $S_n$ (that is, $n$-cycles). It is isomorphic to the poset of so-called admitted vectors, and to an interval in the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_n$ with the weak order. The poset is a semidistributive lattice, and the rank function, whose range is cubic in $n$, is computed by some special formula involving inversions. We prove also some links with Eulerian numbers, triangulations of an $n$-gon, and Young's lattice.
Primitive Elements of the Hopf Algebras of Tableaux

The character theory of symmetric groups, and the theory of symmetric functions, both make use of the combinatorics of Young tableaux, such as the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, Schuetzenberger's "jeu de taquin", and evacuation. In 1995 Poirier and the second author introduced some algebraic structures, different from the plactic monoid, which induce some products and coproducts of tableaux, with homomorphisms. Their starting point are the two dual Hopf algebras of permutations, introduced by the authors in 1995. In 2006 Aguiar and Sottile studied in more detail the Hopf algebra of permutations: among other things, they introduce a new basis, by Moebius inversion in the poset of weak order, that allows them to describe the primitive elements of the Hopf algebra of permutations. In the present note, by a similar method, we determine the primitive elements of the Poirier-Reutenauer algebra of tableaux, using a partial order on tableaux defined by Taskin.

We define solvable quantum mechanical systems on a Hilbert space spanned by bipartite ribbon graphs with a fixed number of edges. The Hilbert space is also an associative algebra, where the product is derived from permutation group products. The existence and structure of this Hilbert space algebra has a number of consequences. The algebra product, which can be expressed in terms of integer ribbon graph reconnection coefficients, is used to define solvable Hamiltonians with eigenvalues expressed in terms of normalized characters of symmetric group elements and degeneracies given in terms of Kronecker coefficients, which are tensor product multiplicities of symmetric group representations. The square of the Kronecker coefficient for a triple of Young diagrams is shown to be equal to the dimension of a sub-lattice in the lattice of ribbon graphs. This leads to an answer to the long-standing question of a combinatoric interpretation of the Kronecker coefficients. As an avenue to explore quantum supremacy and its implications for computational complexity theory, we outline experiments to detect non-vanishing Kronecker coefficients for hypothetical quantum realizations/simulations of these quantum systems. The correspondence between ribbon graphs and Belyi maps leads to an interpretation of these quantum mechanical systems in terms of quantum membrane world-volumes interpolating between string geometries.
Proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution on ascent sequences

It is well known since the seminal work by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev (2010) that certain refinements of the ascent sequences with respect to several natural statistics are in bijection with corresponding refinements of $({\bf2+2})$-free posets and permutations that avoid a bivincular pattern. Different multiply-refined enumerations of ascent sequences and other bijectively equivalent structures have subsequently been extensively studied by various authors.
In this paper, our main contributions are
1. a bijective proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution of statistics on ascent sequences, involving the number of ascents (asc), the number of repeated entries (rep), the number of zeros (zero), the number of maximal entries (max), the number of right-to-left minima (rmin) and two auxiliary statistics;
2. a new transformation formula for non-terminating basic hypergeometric $_4φ_3$ series expanded as an analytic function in base $q$ around $q=1$, which is utilized to prove two (bi)-symmetric quadruple equidistributions on ascent sequences.
A by-product of our findings includes the affirmation of a conjecture about the bi-symmetric equidistribution between the quadruples of Euler--Stirling statistics (asc, rep, zero, max) and (rep, asc, max, zero) on ascent sequences, that was motivated by a double Eulerian equidistribution due to Foata (1977) and recently proposed by Fu, Lin, Yan, Zhou and the first author (2018).
Burning Geometric Graphs
A procedure called \textit{graph burning} was introduced to facilitate the modelling of spread of an alarm, a social contagion, or a social influence or emotion on graphs and networks.
Graph burning runs on discrete time-steps (or rounds). At each step $t$, first (a) an unburned vertex is burned (as a \textit{fire source}) from "outside", and then (b) the fire spreads to vertices adjacent to the vertices which are burned till step $t-1$. This process stops after all the vertices of $G$ have been burned. The aim is to burn all the vertices in a given graph in minimum time-steps. The least number of time-steps required to burn a graph is called its \textit{burning number}. The less the burning number is, the faster a graph can be burned.
Burning a general graph optimally is an NP-Complete problem. It has been proved that optimal burning of path forests, spider graphs, and trees with maximum degree three is NP-Complete. We study the \textit{graph burning problem} on several sub-classes of \textit{geometric graphs}.
We show that burning interval graphs (Section 7.1, Theorem 7.1), permutation graphs (Section 7.2, Theorem 7.2) and disk graphs (Section 7.3, Theorem 7.3) optimally is NP-Complete. In addition, we opine that optimal burning of general graphs (Section 9.2, Conjecture 9.1) cannot be approximated better than 3-approximation factor.
$3$-setwise intersecting families of the symmetric group

Given two positive integers $n\geq 3$ and $t\leq n$, the permutations $σ,π\in \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ are $t$-setwise intersecting if they agree (setwise) on a $t$-subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. A family $\mathcal{F} \subset \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ is $t$-setwise intersecting if any two permutations of $\mathcal{F}$ are $t$-setwise intersecting. Ellis [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 119(4), 825--849, 2012] conjectured that if $t\leq n$ and $\mathcal{F} \subset \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ is a $t$-setwise intersecting family, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq t!(n-t)!$ and equality holds only if $\mathcal{F}$ is a coset of a setwise stablizer of a $t$-subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$.
In this paper, we prove that if $n\geq 11$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is $3$-setwise intersecting, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 6(n-3)!$. Moreover, we prove that the characteristic vector of a $3$-setwise intersecting family of maximum size lies in the sum of the eigenspaces induced by the permutation module of $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$ acting on the $3$-subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$.

Several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ on triangulations, trees, words and permutations are compared. Addressing a question of David Vogan, we show that, modulo a natural involution, these permutation representations are multiplicity-free. The proof uses a general construction of Gelfand subgroups in the affine Weyl groups of types $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ and $\widetilde{B}_n$.

We derive a simple functional equation with two catalytic variables characterising the generating function of 3-stack-sortable permutations. Using this functional equation, we extend the 174-term series to 1000 terms. From this series, we conjecture that the generating function behaves as $$W(t) \sim C_0(1-μ_3 t)^α\cdot \log^β(1-μ_3 t), $$ so that $$[t^n]W(t)=w_n \sim \frac{c_0μ_3^n}{ n^{(α+1)}\cdot \log^λ{n}} ,$$ where $μ_3 = 9.69963634535(30),$ $α= 2.0 \pm 0.25.$ If $α= 2$ exactly, then $λ= -β+1$, and we estimate $β\approx -3.$ If $α$ is not an integer, then $λ=-β$, but we cannot give a useful estimate of $β$. The growth constant estimate (just) contradicts a conjecture of the first author that $$9.702 < μ_3 \le 9.704.$$ We also prove a new rigorous lower bound of $μ_3\geq 9.4854$, allowing us to disprove a conjecture of Bóna.
We then further extend the series using differential-approximants to obtain approximate coefficients $O(t^{2000}),$ expected to be accurate to $20$ significant digits, and use the approximate coefficients to provide additional evidence supporting the results obtained from the exact coefficients.
Log-concavity of the Excedance Enumerators in positive elements of Type A and Type B Coxeter Groups

The classical Eulerian Numbers $A_{n,k}$ are known to be log-concave. Let $P_{n,k}$ and $Q_{n,k}$ be the number of even and odd permutations with $k$ excedances. In this paper, we show that $P_{n,k}$ and $Q_{n,k}$ are log-concave. For this, we introduce the notion of strong synchronisation and ratio-alternating which are motivated by the notion of synchronisation and ratio-dominance, introduced by Gross, Mansour, Tucker and Wang in 2014.
We show similar results for Type B Coxeter Groups. We finish with some conjectures to emphasize the following: though strong synchronisation is stronger than log-concavity, many pairs of interesting combinatorial families of sequences seem to satisfy this property.

We present several existence and nonexistence results for permutation binomials of the form $x^r(x^{q-1}+a)$, where $e\geq 2$ and $a\in \mathbb{F}_{q^e}^*$. As a consequence, we obtain a complete characterization of such permutation binomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$, $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$, $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$, $\mathbb{F}_{p^5}$, and $\mathbb{F}_{p^6}$, where $p$ is an odd prime.
A look at generalized perfect shuffles

Standard perfect shuffles involve splitting a deck of $2n$ cards into two stacks and interlacing the cards from the stacks. There are two ways that this interlacing can be done, commonly referred to as an in shuffle and an out shuffle, respectively. In 1983, Diaconis, Graham, and Kantor determined the permutation group generated by in and out shuffles on a deck of $2n$ cards for all $n$. Diaconis et al. concluded their work by asking whether similar results can be found for so-called generalized perfect shuffles. For these new shuffles, we split a deck of $mn$ cards into $m$ stacks and similarly interlace the cards with an in $m$-shuffle or out $m$-shuffle (denoted $I_m$ and $O_m$, respectively). In this paper, we find the structure of the group generated by these two shuffles for a deck of $m^k$ cards, together with $m^y$-shuffles, for all possible values of $m$, $k$, and $y$. The group structure is completely determined by $k/\gcd(y,k)$ and the parity of $y/\gcd(y,k)$. In particular, the group structure is independent of the value of $m$.
On the Boomerang Uniformity of Permutations of Low Carlitz Rank

Finding permutation polynomials with low differential and boomerang uniformityis an important topic in S-box designs of many block ciphers. For example, AES chooses the inverse function as its S-box, which is differentially 4-uniform and boomerang 6-uniform. Also there has been considerable research on many non-quadratic permutations which are obtained by modifying certain set of points from the inverse function. In this paper, we give a novel approach that shows that plenty of existing modifications of the inverse function are in fact affine equivalent to permutations of low Carlitz rank and those modifications cannot be APN (almost perfect nonlinear) unless the Carlitz rank is very large. Using nice properties of the permutations of Carlitz form, we present the complete list of permutations of Carlitz rank 3 having the boomerang uniformity six, and also give the complete classification of the differential uniformity of permutations of Carlitz rank 3. We also provide, up to affine equivalence, all the involutory permutations of Carlitz rank 3 having the boomerang uniformity six.

The odd diagram of a permutation is a subset of the classical diagram with additional parity conditions. In this paper, we study classes of permutations with the same odd diagram, which we call odd diagram classes. First, we prove a conjecture relating odd diagram classes and 213- and 312-avoiding permutations. Secondly, we show that each odd diagram class is a Bruhat interval. Instrumental to our proofs is an explicit description of the Bruhat edges that link permutations in a class.
Coordinate transitivity of extended perfect codes and their SQS

We continue the study of the class of binary extended perfect propelinear codes constructed in the previous paper and consider their permutation automorphism (symmetry) groups and Steiner quadruple systems. We show that the automorphism group of the SQS of any such code coincides with the permutation automorphism group of the code. In particular, the SQS of these codes are complete invariants for the isomorphism classes of these codes. We obtain a criterion for the point transitivity of the automorphism group of SQS of proposed codes in terms of GL-equivalence (similar to EA-type equivalence for permutations of F^r). Based on these results we suggest a new construction for coordinate transitive and neighbor transitive extended perfect codes.
Semi-random process without replacement

Semi-random processes involve an adaptive decision-maker, whose goal is to achieve some pre-determined objective in an online randomized environment. We introduce and study a semi-random multigraph process, which forms a no-replacement variant of the process that was introduced by Ben-Eliezer, Hefetz, Kronenberg, Parczyk, Shikhelman and Stojaković (2020). The process starts with an empty graph on the vertex set $[n]$. For every positive integers $q$ and $1\leq r\leq n$, in the $((q-1)n+r)$th round of the process, the decision-maker, called \emph{Builder}, is offered the vertex $π_q(r)$, where $π_1, π_2, \ldots$ is a sequence of permutations in $S_n$, chosen independently and uniformly at random. Builder then chooses an additional vertex (according to a strategy of his choice) and connects it by an edge to $π_q(r)$.
For several natural graph properties, such as $k$-connectivity, minimum degree at least $k$, and building a given spanning graph (labeled or unlabeled), we determine the typical number of rounds Builder needs in order to construct a graph having the desired property. Along the way we introduce and analyze an urn model which may also have independent interest.

In a recent work, Beierle, Brinkmann and Leander presented a recursive tree search for finding APN permutations with linear self-equivalences in small dimensions. In this paper, we describe how this search can be adapted to find many new instances of quadratic APN functions. In particular, we found 12,921 new quadratic APN functions in dimension eight, 35 new quadratic APN functions in dimension nine and five new quadratic APN functions in dimension ten up to CCZ-equivalence. Remarkably, two of the 35 new APN functions in dimension nine are APN permutations.
Among the 8-bit APN functions, there are three extended Walsh spectra that do not correspond to any of the previously-known quadratic 8-bit APN functions and, surprisingly, there exist at least four CCZ-inequivalent 8-bit APN functions with linearity $2^7$, i.e., the highest possible non-trivial linearity for quadratic functions in dimension eight.
The peak and descent statistics over ballot permutations

A ballot permutation is a permutation $π$ such that in any prefix of $π$ the descent number is not more than the ascent number. By using a reversal concatenation map, we give a formula for the joint distribution (pk, des) of the peak and descent statistics over ballot permutations, and connect this distribution and the joint distribution (pk, dp, des) of the peak, depth, and descent statistics over ordinary permutations in terms of generating functions. As corollaries, we obtain several formulas for the bivariate generating function for (i) the peak statistic over ballot permutations,(ii) the descent statistic over ballot permutations, and (iii) the depth statistic over ordinary permutations. In particular, we confirm Spiro's conjecture which finds the equidistribution of the descent statistic for ballot permutations and an analogue of the descent statistic for odd order permutations.

The polytope subalgebra of deformations of a zonotope can be endowed with the structure of a module over the Tits algebra of the corresponding hyperplane arrangement. We explore this construction and find relations between statistics on (signed) permutations and the module structure in the case of (type B) generalized permutahedra. In type B, the module structure surprisingly reveals that any family of generators (via signed Minkowski sums) for generalized permutahedra of type B will contain at least $2^{d-1}$ full-dimensional polytopes. We find a generating family of simplices attaining this minimum. Finally, we prove that the relations defining the polytope algebra are compatible with the Hopf monoid structure of generalized permutahedra.

In this article we define an encoding for parabolic permutations that distinguishes between parabolic $231$-avoiding permutations. We prove that the componentwise order on these codes realizes the parabolic Tamari lattice, and conclude a direct and simple proof that the parabolic Tamari lattice is isomorphic to a certain $ν$-Tamari lattice, with an explicit bijection. Furthermore, we prove that this bijection is closely related to the map $Θ$ used when the lattice isomorphism was first proved in (Ceballos, Fang and Mühle, 2020), settling an open problem therein.
Refined Wilf-equivalences by Comtet statistics

We launch a systematic study of the refined Wilf-equivalences by the statistics $\mathsf{comp}$ and $\mathsf{iar}$, where $\mathsf{comp}(π)$ and $\mathsf{iar}(π)$ are the number of components and the length of the initial ascending run of a permutation $π$, respectively. As Comtet was the first one to consider the statistic $\mathsf{comp}$ in his book {\em Analyse combinatoire}, any statistic equidistributed with $\mathsf{comp}$ over a class of permutations is called by us a {\em Comtet statistic} over such class. This work is motivated by a triple equidistribution result of Rubey on $321$-avoiding permutations, and a recent result of the first and third authors that $\mathsf{iar}$ is a Comtet statistic over separable permutations. Some highlights of our results are:
(1) Bijective proofs of the symmetry of the double Comtet distribution $(\mathsf{comp},\mathsf{iar})$ over several Catalan and Schröder classes, preserving the values of the left-to-right maxima.
(2) A complete classification of $\mathsf{comp}$- and $\mathsf{iar}$-Wilf-equivalences for length $3$ patterns and pairs of length $3$ patterns. Calculations of the $(\mathsf{des},\mathsf{iar},\mathsf{comp})$ generating functions over these pattern avoiding classes and separable permutations.
(3) A further refinement by the Comtet statistic $\mathsf{iar}$, of Wang's recent descent-double descent-Wilf equivalence between separable permutations and $(2413,4213)$-avoiding permutations.
