A q-Analog of Foulke's conjecture

We propose a $q$-analog of classical plethystic conjectures due to Foulkes. In our conjectures, a divided difference of plethysms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials $H_n(\mathbf{x};q)$ replaces the analogous difference of plethysms of complete homogeneous symmetric functions $h_n(\mathbf{x})$ in Foulkes conjecture. At $q=0$, we get back the original statement of Foulkes, and we show that our version holds at $q=1$. We discuss further supporting evidence, as well as various generalizations.

We prove that in the geometric complexity theory program the vanishing of rectangular Kronecker coefficients cannot be used to prove superpolynomial determinantal complexity lower bounds for the permanent polynomial.
Moreover, we prove the positivity of rectangular Kronecker coefficients for a large class of partitions where the side lengths of the rectangle are at least quadratic in the length of the partition. We also compare rectangular Kronecker coefficients with their corresponding plethysm coefficients, which leads to a new lower bound for rectangular Kronecker coefficients. Moreover, we prove that the saturation of the rectangular Kronecker semigroup is trivial, we show that the rectangular Kronecker positivity stretching factor is 2 for a long first row, and we completely classify the positivity of rectangular limit Kronecker coefficients that were introduced by Manivel in 2011.

This paper proves a combinatorial rule expressing the product $s_τ(s_{λ/μ} \circ p_r)$ of a Schur function and the plethysm of a skew Schur function with a power sum symmetric function as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. This generalizes the SXP rule for the plethysm $s_λ\circ p_r$. Each step in the proof uses either an explicit bijection or a sign-reversing involution. The proof is inspired by an earlier proof of the SXP rule due to Remmel and Shimozono, A simple proof of the Littlewood--Richardson rule and applications, Discrete Mathematics 193 (1998) 257--266. The connections with two later combinatorial rules for special cases of this plethysm are discussed. Two open problems are raised. The paper is intended to be readable by non-experts.

Motivated by questions of Mulmuley and Stanley we investigate quasi-polynomials arising in formulas for plethysm. We demonstrate, on the examples of $S^3(S^k)$ and $S^k(S^3)$, that these need not be counting functions of inhomogeneous polytopes of dimension equal to the degree of the quasi-polynomial. It follows that these functions are not, in general, counting functions of lattice points in any scaled convex bodies, even when restricted to single rays. Our results also apply to special rectangular Kronecker coefficients.
Stability Properties Of The Plethysm: A Combinatorial Approach

An important family of structural constants in the theory of symmetric functions and in the representation theory of symmetric groups and general linear groups are the plethysm coefficients. In 1950, Foulkes observed that they have some stability properties: certain sequences of plethysm coefficients are eventually constant. Such stability properties were proven by Brion with geometric techniques, and by Thibon and Carré by means of vertex operators. In this paper we present a new approach to prove such stability properties. Our proofs are purely combinatorial and follow the same scheme. We decompose plethysm coefficients in terms of other plethysm coefficients related to the complete homogeneous basis of symmetric functions. We show that these other plethysm coefficients count integer points in polytopes and we prove stability for them by exhibiting bijections between the corresponding sets of integer points of each polytope.

We show that some of the main structural constants for symmetric functions (Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, Kronecker coefficients, plethysm coefficients, and the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials) share symmetries related to the operations of taking complements with respect to rectangles and adding rectangles.

A combinatorial expression for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_λ$ in the expansion of the plethysm $p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ$ is given for all $d$ dividing $n$ for the cases in which $n=2$ or $λ$ is rectangular. In these cases, the coefficient $\langle p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ, s_λ \rangle$ is shown to count, up to sign, the number of fixed points of an $\langle s_μ^n, s_λ \rangle$-element set under the $d^{\text{th}}$ power of an order-$n$ cyclic action. If $n=2$, the action is the Schützenberger involution on semistandard Young tableaux (also known as evacuation), and, if $λ$ is rectangular, the action is a certain power of Schützenberger and Shimozono's jeu-de-taquin promotion.
This work extends results of Stembridge and Rhoades linking fixed points of the Schützenberger actions to ribbon tableaux enumeration. The conclusion for the case $n=2$ is equivalent to the domino tableaux rule of Carré and Leclerc for discriminating between the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the square of a Schur function.

We apply lattice point counting methods to compute the multiplicities in the plethysm of $GL(n)$. Our approach gives insight into the asymptotic growth of the plethysm and makes the problem amenable to computer algebra. We prove an old conjecture of Howe on the leading term of plethysm. For any partition $μ$ of 3,4, or 5 we obtain an explicit formula in $λ$ and $k$ for the multiplicity of $S^λ$ in $S^μ(S^k)$.

This article gives a combinatorial proof of a plethystic generalization of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. The main result expresses the product of a Schur function with the plethysm $p_r \circ h_n$ as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. The proof uses a sign-reversing involution on sequences of bead moves on James' abacus, inspired by the arguments in N. Loehr, Abacus proofs of Schur function identities, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 24 (2010), 1356-1370.

This paper gives a plethysm formula on the characteristic map of the induced linear characters from the unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(\mathbb F_q)$ to $GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$, the general linear group over finite field $\mathbb F_q$. The result turns out to be a multiple of a twisted version of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions $\tilde{P}_n(Y,q)$. A recurrence relation is also given which makes it easy to carry out the computation.
The first term of plethysms
Plethysm of two Schur functions can be expressed as a linear combination of Schur functions, and monomial symmetric functions. In this paper, we express the coefficients combinatorially in the case of monomial symmetric functions. And by using it, we determine the first term of the plethysm with respect to Schur functions under the reverse lexicographic order.

Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon\cite{LLT} introduced a family of symmetric polynomials, called LLT polynomials. We prove a $q$-multinomial expansion of the coefficients of LLT polynomials in the case where $ \boldsymbolμ = \underbrace{(μ,...,μ)}_{n}$ and define a $q$-analog of a sum of the plethysm multiplicities.
A combinatorial basis for the free Lie algebra of the labelled rooted trees

The pre-Lie operad can be realized as a space T of labelled rooted trees. A result of F. Chapoton shows that the pre-Lie operad is a free twisted Lie algebra. That is, the S-module T is obtained as the plethysm of the S-module Lie with an S-module F. In the context of species, we construct an explicit basis of F. This allows us to give a new proof of Chapoton's results. Moreover it permits us to show that F forms a sub nonsymmetric operad of the pre-Lie operad T.

The plethysms of the Weyl characters associated to a classical Lie group by the symmetric functions stabilize in large rank. In the case of a power sum plethysm, we prove that the coefficients of the decomposition of this stabilized form on the basis of Weyl characters are branching coefficients which can be determined by a simple algorithm. This generalizes in particular some classical results by Littlewood on the power sum plethysms of Schur functions. We also establish explicit formulas for the outer multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the tensor square of any irreducible finite dimensional module into its symmetric and antisymmetric parts. These multiplicities can notably be expressed in terms of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Shifted set families, degree sequences, and plethysm

We study, in three parts, degree sequences of k-families (or k-uniform hypergraphs) and shifted k-families. The first part collects for the first time in one place, various implications such as: Threshold implies Uniquely Realizable implies Degree-Maximal implies Shifted, which are equivalent concepts for 2-families (=simple graphs), but strict implications for k-families with k > 2. The implication that uniquely realizable implies degree-maximal seems to be new. The second part recalls Merris and Roby's reformulation of the characterization due to Ruch and Gutman for graphical degree sequences and shifted 2-families. It then introduces two generalizations which are characterizations of shifted k-families. The third part recalls the connection between degree sequences of k-families of size m and the plethysm of elementary symmetric functions e_m[e_k]. It then uses highest weight theory to explain how shifted k-families provide the ``top part'' of these plethysm expansions, along with offering a conjecture about a further relation.

We prove Stanley's plethysm conjecture for the $2 \times n$ case, which composed with the work of Black and List provides another proof of Foulkes conjecture for the $2 \times n$ case. We also show that the way Stanley formulated his conjecture, it is false in general, and suggest an alternative formulation.

The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of Joyal's theory of tensor species, which includes a link between polynomial functors and plethysm for general r. We also give a new proof of Lehrer's formula for the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of the hyperplane complement.

For a positive definite fundamental tensor all known examples of Osserman algebraic curvature tensors have a typical structure. They can be produced from a metric tensor and a finite set of skew-symmetric matrices which fulfil Clifford commutation relations. We show by means of Young symmetrizers and a theorem of S. A. Fulling, R. C. King, B. G. Wybourne and C. J. Cummins that every algebraic curvature tensor has a structure which is very similar to that of the above Osserman curvature tensors. We verify our results by means of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and plethysms. For certain symbolic calculations we used the Mathematica packages MathTensor, Ricci and PERMS.
