Dimensions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties: a new approach via labeled folded alcove walks and root operators
Published in Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 261 (2019), no. 1260, v+101 pp • Search Publication
Let G be a reductive group over the field F=k((t)), where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field, and let W be the (extended) affine Weyl group of G. The associated affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_x(b)$, which are indexed by elements b in G(F) and x in W, were introduced by Rapoport. Basic questions about the varieties $X_x(b)$ which have remained largely open include when they are nonempty, and if nonempty, their dimension. We use techniques inspired by geometric group theory and representation theory to address these questions in the case that b is a pure translation, and so prove much of a sharpened version of Conjecture 9.5.1 of Görtz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman. Our approach is constructive and type-free, sheds new light on the reasons for existing results in the case that b is basic, and reveals new patterns. Since we work only in the standard apartment of the building for G(F), our results also hold in the p-adic context, where we formulate a definition of the dimension of a p-adic Deligne-Lusztig set. We present two immediate consequences of our main results, to class polynomials of affine Hecke algebras and to affine reflection length.

Bounded Height Interlaced Pairs of Parking Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate interlaced pairs of parking functions whose underlying Dyck path has a bounded height. We obtain an explicit formula for this enumeration in the form of a quotient of analogs of Chebicheff polynomials having coefficients in the ring of symmetric functions.

Explicit formulas for computation of the Poincaré series for the algebras of joint $SL_2$-invariants and covariants of $n$ linear forms in terms of Narayana polynomials are found. Also, for these algebras we calculate the degrees and asymptotic behavious of the degrees.

Polynomial Invariants for Arbitrary Rank $D$ Weakly-Colored Stranded Graphs
Published in SIGMA 12 (2016), 030, 23 pages • View PublicationBIB
Polynomials on stranded graphs are higher dimensional generalization of Tutte and Bollobás-Riordan polynomials [Math. Ann. 323 (2002), 81-96]. Here, we deepen the analysis of the polynomial invariant defined on rank 3 weakly-colored stranded graphs introduced in arXiv:1301.1987. We successfully find in dimension $D\geq3$ a modified Euler characteristic with $D-2$ parameters. Using this modified invariant, we extend the rank 3 weakly-colored graph polynomial, and its main properties, on rank 4 and then on arbitrary rank $D$ weakly-colored stranded graphs.

Dunkl kernel associated with dihedral group
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we pursue the investigations started in \cite{Mas-You} where the authors provide a construction of the Dunkl intertwining operator for a large subset of the set of regular multiplicity values. More precisely, we make concrete the action of this operator on homogeneous polynomials when the root system is of dihedral type and under a mild assumption on the multiplicity function. In particular, we obtain a formula for the corresponding Dunkl kernel and another representation of the generalized Bessel function already derived in \cite{Demni0}. When the multiplicity function is everywhere constant, our computations give a solution to the problem of counting the number of decompositions of an element from a dihedral group into a fixed number of (non necessarily simple) reflections. In the remainder of the paper, we supply another method to derive the Dunkl kernel associated with dihedral systems from the corresponding generalized Bessel function. This time, we use the shift principle together with multiple combinations of Dunkl operators corresponding to the vectors of the canonical basis of $\mathbb{R}^2$. When the dihedral system is of order six and only in this case, a single combination suffices to get the Dunkl kernel and agrees up to an isomorphism with the formula recently obtained by Amri \cite[Lemma1]{Amri} in the case of a root system of type $A_2$. We finally derive an integral representation for the Dunkl kernel associated with the dihedral system of order eight.

A quantization of the harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Published in Journal of Functional Analysis, 270, 375-418 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it turned out that their correlation kernels are computable in explicit form --- they admit a closed expression in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2-F-1 (Borodin and Olshanski, Ann. Math., 2005, arXiv:0109194). In the present work we describe a (nonevident) q-discretization of the whole construction. This leads us to a new family of determinantal point processes. We reveal its connection with an exotic finite system of q-discrete orthogonal polynomials --- the so-called pseudo big q-Jacobi polynomials. The new point processes live on a double q-lattice and we show that their correlation kernels are expressed through the basic hypergeometric function 2-φ-1. A crucial novel ingredient of our approach is an extended version G of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph (the conventional graph describes the Gelfand-Tsetlin branching rule for irreducible representations of unitary groups). We find the q-boundary of G, thus extending previously known results (Gorin, Adv. Math., 2012, arXiv:1011.1769).

On bisecants of Rédei type blocking sets and applications
We use polynomial techniques to derive structural results on Rédei type blocking sets from information on their bisecants. We apply our results to point sets of $PG(2,q)$ with few odd-secants. In particular, we improve the lower bound of Balister, Bollobás, Füredi and Thompson on the number of odd-secants of a $(q+2)$-set in $PG(2,q)$ and we answer a related open question of Vandendriessche. We prove structural results for semiovals and derive the non existence of semiovals of size $q+3$ when 3 does not divide $q$ and $q>5$. This extends a result of Blokhuis who classified semiovals of size $q+2$, and a result of Bartoli who classified semiovals of size $q+3$ when $q\leq 17$. In the $q$ even case we can say more applying a result of Szőnyi and Weiner about the stability of sets of even type. We also obtain new proof to a result of Gács and Weiner about $(q+t,t)$-arcs of type $(0,2,t)$ and to one part of a result of Ball, Blokhuis, Brouwer, Storme and Szőnyi about functions over $GF(q)$ determining less than $(q+3)/2$ directions.

A divisibility result on combinatorics of generalized braids
Published • View PublicationBIB
For every finite Coxeter group $Γ$, each positive braids in the corresponding braid group admits a unique decomposition as a finite sequence of elements of $Γ$, the so-called Garside-normal form. The study of the associated adjacency matrix $Adj(Γ)$ allows to count the number of Garside-normal form of a given length. In this paper we prove that the characteristic polynomial of $Adj(B_n)$ divides the one of $Adj(B_{n+1})$. The key point is the use of a Hopf algebra based on signed permutations. A similar result was already known for the type $A$. We observe that this does not hold for type $D$. The other Coxeter types ($I$, $E$, $F$ and $H$) are also studied.

Critical ideals of trees
Given a graph $G=(V, E)$, its generalized Laplacian matrix is given by \[ L(G,X_G)_{u,v}= \begin{cases} x_u&\text{if }u=v,\\ -m_{uv}&\text{if }u\neq v, \end{cases} \] where $X_G=\{x_u\, | \, u\in V(G)\}$ is a set of indeterminates and $m_{uv}$ is the number of edges between $u$ and $v$. The $j$-critical ideal of $G$ is the determinantal ideal generated by the minors of size $j$ of $L(G, X)$. A $2$-matching of $G$ is a subset $\mathcal{M}$ of its edges such that every vertex of $G$ has at most two incident edges in $\mathcal{M}$. We give a combinatorial description of a set of generators of the $j$-critical ideal of a tree $T$ as a function of a set of special $2$-matchings, which we called minimal, of the graph $T^\ell$ obtained from $T$ by adding a loop at each of its vertices. Also, we prove that the algebraic co-rank of $T$ is equal to the $2$-matching number of $T$, the maximum number of edges of a $2$-matching of $T$. As a consequence, one can compute each invariant factor of the critical group of any graph $G$ such that $G\setminus v$ is a tree for some of its vertices $v$, as the greatest common divisor of the evaluation of some polynomials associated to the minimal $2$-matchings of $T^\ell$. For instance, in the regular case, we recover some of the results obtained by Levine and Toumpakari about the critical group of a wired regular tree. Additionally, we can prove that the path $P_n$ is the unique simple graph with $n$ vertices and $n-1$ trivial critical ideals. We conjecture that the set of generators that we give is a reduced Gröbner basis and we can prove this for the $|V(T)|-1$-critical ideal. Finally, we apply the result in order to calculate the critical ideals of trees with depth two and some arithmetical trees associated to the reduction of elliptic curves of Kodaira type $I_n^*$.

Weakly Secure MDS Codes for Simple Multiple Access Networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a simple multiple access network (SMAN), where $k$ sources of unit rates transmit their data to a common sink via $n$ relays. Each relay is connected to the sink and to certain sources. A coding scheme (for the relays) is weakly secure if a passive adversary who eavesdrops on less than $k$ relay-sink links cannot reconstruct the data from each source. We show that there exists a weakly secure maximum distance separable (MDS) coding scheme for the relays if and only if every subset of $\ell$ relays must be collectively connected to at least $\ell+1$ sources, for all $0 < \ell < k$. Moreover, we prove that this condition can be verified in polynomial time in $n$ and $k$. Finally, given a SMAN satisfying the aforementioned condition, we provide another polynomial time algorithm to trim the network until it has a sparsest set of source-relay links that still supports a weakly secure MDS coding scheme.

Difference Sets and Polynomials
We provide upper bounds on the largest subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,N\}$ with no differences of the form $h_1(n_1)+\cdots+h_{\ell}(n_{\ell})$ with $n_i\in \mathbb{N}$ or $h_1(p_1)+\cdots+h_{\ell}(p_{\ell})$ with $p_i$ prime, where $h_i\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ lie in in the classes of so-called intersective and $\mathcal{P}$-intersective polynomials, respectively. For example, we show that a subset of $\{1,2,\dots,N\}$ free of nonzero differences of the form $n^j+m^k$ for fixed $j,k\in \mathbb{N}$ has density at most $e^{-(\log N)^μ}$ for some $μ=μ(j,k)>0$. Our results, obtained by adapting two Fourier analytic, circle method-driven strategies, either recover or improve upon all previous results for a single polynomial. UPDATE: While the results and proofs in this preprint are correct, the main result (Theorem 1.1) has been superseded prior to publication by a new paper ( https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.01760 ) that provides better results with considerably less technicality, to which the interested reader should refer.

Polynomials vanishing on Cartesian products: The Elekes-Szabó Theorem revisited
Published in Duke Math. J. 165, no. 18 (2016), 3517-3566 • View PublicationBIB
Let $F\in\mathbb{C}[x,y,z]$ be a constant-degree polynomial, and let $A,B,C\subset\mathbb C$ be finite sets of size $n$. We show that $F$ vanishes on at most $O(n^{11/6})$ points of the Cartesian product $A\times B\times C$, unless $F$ has a special group-related form. This improves a theorem of Elekes and Szabó [Combinatorica, 2012], and generalizes a result of Raz, Sharir, and Solymosi [Amer. J. Math., to appear]. The same statement holds over $\mathbb{R}$, and a similar statement holds when $A, B, C$ have different sizes (with a more involved bound replacing $O(n^{11/6})$). This result provides a unified tool for improving bounds in various Erd\H os-type problems in combinatorial geometry, and we discuss several applications of this kind.

Strongly sublinear separators and polynomial expansion
A result of Plotkin, Rao, and Smith implies that graphs with polynomial expansion have strongly sublinear separators. We prove a converse of this result showing that hereditary classes of graphs with strongly sublinear separators have polynomial expansion. This confirms a conjecture of the first author.

Kraśkiewicz-Pragacz modules and Ringel duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz introduced representations of the upper-triangular Lie algebras whose characters are Schubert polynomials. In a previous work the author studied the structure of Kraśkiewicz-Pragacz modules using the theory of highest weight categories. From the results there, in particular we obtain a certain highest weight category whose standard modules are KP modules. In this paper we show that this highest weight category is self Ringel-dual: this leads to an interesting symmetry relation on Ext groups between KP modules. We also show that the tensor product operation on b-modules is compatible with Ringel duality functor.

Dimension filtration, sequential Cohen--Macaulayness and a new polynomial invariant of graded algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\k$ be a field and let $A$ be a standard $\mathbb{N}$-graded $\k$-algebra. Using numerical information of some invariants in the primary decomposition of $0$ in $A$, namely the so called dimension filtration, we associate a bivariate polynomial $\BW(A;t,w)$, that we call the Björner--Wachs polynomial, to $A$. It is shown that the Björner--Wachs polynomial is an algebraic counterpart of the combinatorially defined $h$-triangle of finite simplicial complexes introduced by Björner \& Wachs. We provide a characterisation of sequentially Cohen--Macaulay algebras in terms of the effect of the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal on the Björner--Wachs polynomial. More precisely, we show that a graded algebra is sequentially Cohen--Macaulay if and only if it has a stable Björner--Wachs polynomial under passing to the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal. We conclude by discussing connections with the Hilbert series of local cohomology modules.

Sparse multivariate polynomial interpolation in the basis of Schubert polynomials
Published in Computational Complexity, 2017 Dec, 26(4), pp. 881-909 • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials were discovered by A. Lascoux and M. Schützenberger in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds in 1980's. These polynomials generalize Schur polynomials, and form a linear basis of multivariate polynomials. In 2003, Lenart and Sottile introduced skew Schubert polynomials, which generalize skew Schur polynomials, and expand in the Schubert basis with the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In this paper we initiate the study of these two families of polynomials from the perspective of computational complexity theory. We first observe that skew Schubert polynomials, and therefore Schubert polynomials, are in $\CountP$ (when evaluating on non-negative integral inputs) and $\VNP$. Our main result is a deterministic algorithm that computes the expansion of a polynomial $f$ of degree $d$ in $\Z[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in the basis of Schubert polynomials, assuming an oracle computing Schubert polynomials. This algorithm runs in time polynomial in $n$, $d$, and the bit size of the expansion. This generalizes, and derandomizes, the sparse interpolation algorithm of symmetric polynomials in the Schur basis by Barvinok and Fomin (Advances in Applied Mathematics, 18(3):271--285). In fact, our interpolation algorithm is general enough to accommodate any linear basis satisfying certain natural properties. Applications of the above results include a new algorithm that computes the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Weighted Hurwitz numbers and hypergeometric $τ$-functions: an overview
Published in Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 93. 289-333 (2016) • Search Publication
This is an overview of recent results on the use of 2D Toda $τ$-functions as generating functions for multiparametric families of weighted Hurwitz numbers. The Bose-Fermi equivalence composed with the characteristic map provides an isomorphism between the zero charge sector of the Fermionic Fock space and the direct sum of the centers of the group algebra of the symmetric groups $S_n$. Specializing the fermionic formula to the case of diagonal group elements gives $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type, for which the expansion over products of Schur functions is diagonal, with coefficients of {\em content product} type. The corresponding abelian group action on the centre of the $S_n$ group algebra is determined by forming symmetric functions multiplicatively from a weight generating function $G(z)$ and evaluating on the Jucys-Murphy elements of the group algebra. The resulting central elements act diagonally on the basis of orthogonal idempotents and the eigenvalues $r^{G(z)}_λ$ are the {\em content product} coefficients appearing in the double Schur function expansion. Both the geometrical meaning of weighted Hurwitz numbers, as weighted sums over $n$-sheeted branched coverings, and the combinatorial one, as weighted enumeration of paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ generated by transpositions follow from expansion of the Cauchy-Littlewood generating functions over dual pairs of bases of the algebra of symmetric functions. The coefficients in the resulting $τ$-function expansion over products of power sum symmetric functions are the weighted Hurwitz numbers. Replacement of the Cauchy-Littlewood generating function by that for Macdonald polynomials provides $(q,t)$-deformations that yield generating functions for quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers.

Connected components of meanders: I. Bi-rainbow meanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
Closed meanders are planar configurations of one or several disjoint closed Jordan curves intersecting a given line or curve transversely. They arise as shooting curves of parabolic PDEs in one space dimension, as trajectories of Cartesian billiards, and as representations of elements of Temperley-Lieb algebras. Given the configuration of intersections, for example as a permutation or an arc collection, the number of Jordan curves is unknown and needs to be determined. We address this question in the special case of bi-rainbow meanders, which are given as non-branched families (rainbows) of nested arcs. Easily obtainable results for small bi-rainbow meanders containing up to four families suggest an expression of the number of curves by the greatest common divisor (gcd) of polynomials in the sizes of the rainbow families. We prove however, that this is not the case. In fact, the number of connected components of bi-rainbow meanders with more than four families cannot be expressed as the gcd of polynomials in the sizes of the rainbows. On the other hand, we provide a complexity analysis of nose-retraction algorithms. They determine the number of connected components of arbitrary bi-rainbow meanders in logarithmic time. In fact, the nose-retraction algorithms resemble the Euclidean algorithm, which is used to determine the gcd, in structure and complexity. Looking for a closed formula of the number of connected components, the nose-retraction algorithm is as good as a gcd-formula and therefore as good as we can possibly expect.

Quantum Hurwitz numbers and Macdonald polynomials
Published in J. Math. Phys. 57, 113505 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
Parametric families in the centre ${\bf Z}({\bf C}[S_n])$ of the group algebra of the symmetric group are obtained by identifying the indeterminates in the generating function for Macdonald polynomials as commuting Jucys-Murphy elements. Their eigenvalues provide coefficients in the double Schur function expansion of 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type. Expressing these in the basis of products of power sum symmetric functions, the coefficients may be interpreted geometrically as parametric families of quantum Hurwitz numbers, enumerating weighted branched coverings of the Riemann sphere. Combinatorially, they give quantum weighted sums over paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ generated by transpositions. Dual pairs of bases for the algebra of symmetric functions with respect to the scalar product in which the Macdonald polynomials are orthogonal provide both the geometrical and combinatorial significance of these quantum weighted enumerative invariants.
Degeneracy Loci Classes in $K$-theory - Determinantal and Pfaffian Formula -
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 320, 2017, Pages 115-156 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a determinantal formula and Pfaffian formulas that respectively describe the $K$-theoretic degeneracy loci classes for Grassmann bundles and for symplectic Grassmann and odd orthogonal bundles. The former generalizes Damon--Kempf--Laksov's determinantal formula and the latter generalize Pragacz--Kazarian's formula for the Chow ring. As an application, we introduce the factorial $GΘ/ GΘ'$-functions representing the torus equivariant $K$-theoretic Schubert classes of the symplectic and the odd orthogonal Grassmannians, which generalize the (double) theta polynomials of Buch--Kresch--Tamvakis and Tamvakis--Wilson.
