The Universal Valuation of Coxeter Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Coxeter matroids generalize matroids just as flag varieties of Lie groups generalize Grassmannians. Valuations of Coxeter matroids are functions that behave well with respect to subdivisions of a Coxeter matroid into smaller ones. We compute the universal valuative invariant of Coxeter matroids. A key ingredient is the family of Coxeter Schubert matroids, which correspond to the Bruhat cells of flag varieties. In the process, we compute the universal valuation of generalized Coxeter permutohedra, a larger family of polyhedra that model Coxeter analogues of combinatorial objects such as matroids, clusters, and posets.

A Birkhoff-Bruhat Atlas for partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group $G$ has a natural stratification into projected Richardson varieties. When $G$ is a connected reductive group, a Bruhat atlas for ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ was constructed by He, Knutson and Lu: ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ is locally modeled with Schubert varieties in some Kac-Moody flag variety as stratified spaces. The existence of Bruaht atlases implies some nice combinatorial and geometric properties on the partial flag varieties and the decomposition into projected Richardson varieties. A Bruhat atlas does not exist for partial flag varieties of an arbitrary Kac-Moody group due to combinatorial and geometric reasons. To overcome obstructions, we introduce the notion of Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. Instead of the Schubert varieties used in a Bruhat atlas, we use the $J$-Schubert varieties for a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. The notion of the $J$-Schubert varieties interpolates Birkhoff decomposition and Bruhat decomposition of the full flag variety (of a larger Kac-Moody group). The main result of this paper is the construction of a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas for any partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group. We also construct a combinatorial atlas for the index set $Q_K$ of the projected Richardson varieties in ${\mathcal {P}}_K$. As a consequence, we show that $Q_K$ has some nice combinatorial properties. This gives a new proof and generalizes the work of Williams in the case where the group $G$ is a connected reductive group.

Coxeter combinatorics and spherical Schubert geometry
Published in Journal of Lie Theory 32 (2022), No. 2, 447--474 • Search Publication
For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. Lascoux- M.-P. Schützenberger, multiplicity-freeness, and split-symmetry in algebraic combinatorics. Thereby, we invoke theorems of A. Kohnert, V. Reiner-M. Shimozono, and C. Ross-A. Yong.

Double Grothendieck polynomials and colored lattice models
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN; art. ID rnaa327 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We construct an integrable colored six-vertex model whose partition function is a double Grothendieck polynomial. This gives an integrable systems interpretation of bumpless pipe dreams and recent results of Weigandt [arXiv:2003.07342] relating double Grothendieck polynomias with bumpless pipe dreams. For vexillary permutations, we then construct a new model that we call the semidual version model. We use our semidual model and the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai to given a new proof that double Grothendieck polynomials for vexillary permutations are equal to flagged factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Taking the stable limit of double Grothendieck polynomials, we obtain a new proof that the stable limit is a factorial Grothendieck polynomial as defined by McNamara. The states of our semidual model naturally correspond to families of nonintersecting lattice paths, where we can then use the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma to give a determinant formula for double Schubert polynomials corresponding to vexillary permutations.

Demazure crystals and the Schur positivity of Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Catalan functions, the graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety, are a rich class of symmetric functions which include $k$-Schur functions and parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We prove that Catalan functions indexed by partition weight are the characters of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_\ell)$-generalized Demazure crystals as studied by Lakshmibai-Littelmann-Magyar and Naoi. We obtain Schur positive formulas for these functions, settling conjectures of Chen-Haiman and Shimozono-Weyman. Our approach more generally gives key positive formulas for graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on Schubert varieties by matching them to characters of generalized Demazure crystals.

Slide polynomials and subword complexes
Published in Sbornik: Mathematics, 2021, 212:10, 1471-1490 • View PublicationBIB
Subword complexes were defined by A.Knutson and E.Miller in 2004 for describing Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties. The facets of such a complex are indexed by pipe dreams, or, equivalently, by the monomials in the corresponding Schubert polynomial. In 2017 S.Assaf and D.Searles defined a basis of slide polynomials, generalizing Stanley symmetric functions, and described a combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials in this basis. We describe a decomposition of subword complexes into strata called slide complexes, that correspond to slide polynomials. The slide complexes are shown to be homeomorphic to balls or spheres.

The Sperner property for $132$-avoiding intervals in the weak order
Published in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 53 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A well-known result of Stanley from 1980 implies that the weak order on a maximal parabolic quotient of the symmetric group $S_n$ has the Sperner property; this same property was recently established for the weak order on all of $S_n$ by Gaetz and Gao, resolving a long-open problem. In this paper we interpolate between these results by showing that the weak order on any parabolic quotient of $S_n$ (and more generally on any $132$-avoiding interval) has the Sperner property. This result is proven by exhibiting an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ respecting the weak order on these intervals. As a corollary we obtain a new formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Our formula can be seen as a strong Bruhat order analogue of Macdonald's reduced word formula. This proof technique and formula generalize work of Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt and Gaetz and Gao.

Positroid cluster structures from relabeled plabic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Grassmannian is a disjoint union of open positroid varieties $P_v$, certain smooth irreducible subvarieties whose definition is motivated by total positivity. The coordinate ring of $P_v$ is a cluster algebra, and each reduced plabic graph $G$ for $P_v$ determines a cluster. We study the effect of relabeling the boundary vertices of $G$ by a permutation $r$. Under suitable hypotheses on the permutation, we show that the relabeled graph $G^r$ determines a cluster for a different open positroid variety $P_w$. As a key step of the proof, we show that $P_v$ and $P_w$ are isomorphic by a nontrivial twist isomorphism. Our constructions yield many cluster structures on each open positroid variety $P_w$, given by plabic graphs with appropriately relabeled boundary. We conjecture that the seeds in all of these cluster structures are related by a combination of mutations and Laurent monomial transformations involving frozen variables, and establish this conjecture for (open) Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. As an application, we also show that for certain reduced plabic graphs $G$, the "source" cluster and the "target" cluster are related by mutation and Laurent monomial rescalings.

Mather classes and conormal spaces of Schubert varieties in cominuscule spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G/P$ be a complex cominuscule flag manifold. We prove a type independent formula for the torus equivariant Mather class of a Schubert variety in $G/P$, and for a Schubert variety pulled back via the natural projection $G/Q \to G/P$. We apply this to find formulae for the local Euler obstructions of Schubert varieties, and for the torus equivariant localizations of the conormal spaces of these Schubert varieties. We conjecture positivity properties for the local Euler obstructions and for the Schubert expansion of Mather classes. We check the conjectures in many cases, by utilizing results of Boe and Fu about the characteristic cycles of the intersection homology sheaves of Schubert varieties. We also conjecture that certain `Mather polynomials' are unimodal in general Lie type, and log concave in type A.

Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e70 • View PublicationBIB
Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison are two frameworks that have been used to produce similar results about similar families of algebraic varieties. In this paper, we establish an explicit connection between these approaches. In particular, we show that each geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is linked by a sequence of elementary G-biliaisons of height 1 to an ideal of indeterminates and, conversely, that every G-biliaison of a certain type gives rise to a geometric vertex decomposition. As a consequence, we can immediately conclude that several well-known families of ideals are glicci, including Schubert determinantal ideals, defining ideals of varieties of complexes, and defining ideals of graded lower bound cluster algebras.

The permutahedral variety, mixed Eulerian numbers, and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2023, Issue 5, March 2023, Pages 3615--3670 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in the basis of Schubert classes. The resulting structure constants $a_w$ are expressed as a sum of \emph{normalized} mixed Eulerian numbers indexed naturally by reduced words of $w$. The description implies that the $a_w$ are positive for all permutations $w\in S_n$ of length $n-1$, thereby answering a question of Harada, Horiguchi, Masuda and Park. We use the same expression to establish the invariance of $a_w$ under taking inverses and conjugation by the longest word, and subsequently establish an intriguing cyclic sum rule for the numbers. We then move toward a deeper combinatorial understanding for the $a_w$ by exploiting in addition the relation to Postnikov's divided symmetrization. Finally, we are able to give a combinatorial interpretation for $a_w$ when $w$ is vexillary, in terms of certain tableau descents. It is based in part on a relation between the numbers $a_w$ and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we prove results and raise questions of independent interest about the combinatorics of permutations, Schubert polynomials and related objects. We also sketch how to extend our approach to other Lie types, highlighting in particular an identity of Klyachko.

Differential operators on Schur and Schubert polynomials
This paper deals with decreasing operators on back stable Schubert polynomials. We study two operators $ξ$ and $\nabla$ of degree $-1$, which satisfy the Leibniz rule. Furthermore, we show that all other such operators are linear combinations of $ξ$ and $\nabla$. For the case of Schur functions, these two operators fully determine the product of Schur functions, i.e., it is possible to define the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients only from $ξ$ and $\nabla$. This new point of view on Schur functions gives us an elementary proof of the Giambelli identity and of Jacobi-Trudi identities. For the case of Schubert polynomials, we construct a bigger class of decreasing operators as expressions in terms of $ξ$ and $\nabla$, which are indexed by Young diagrams. Surprisingly, these operators are related to Stanley symmetric functions. In particular, we extend bosonic operators from Schur to Schubert polynomials.

A positive formula for type $A$ Peterson Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Peterson varieties are special nilpotent Hessenberg varieties that have appeared in the study of quantum cohomology, representation theory, and combinatorics. In type $A$, the Peterson variety $Y$ is a subvariety of the complete flag variety $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$, and is invariant under the action of a subgroup $S\cong \mathbb C^*$ of $T$, where $T$ is the standard (noncompact) torus acting on $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$. Using the Peterson Schubert basis introduced by Harada and Tymoczko obtained by restricting a specific set of Schubert classes from $H_T^*(Fl(n; \mathbb C))$ to $H_S^*(Y)$, we describe the product structure of the equivariant cohomology $H_{S}^*(Y)$. In particular, we show that the product is manifestly positive in an appropriate sense by providing an explicit positive combinatorial formula for its structure constants. Our method requires a new combinatorial identity of binomial coefficients that generalizes Vandermonde's identity.
Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials through ice
Published in Advances in Mathematics 398, Paper No. 108228, 2022, 25 pages • View PublicationBIB
The geometric naturality of Schubert polynomials and their combinatorial pipe dream representations was established by Knutson and Miller (2005) via antidiagonal Gröbner degeneration of matrix Schubert varieties. We consider instead diagonal Gröbner degenerations. In this dual setting, Knutson, Miller, and Yong (2009) obtained alternative combinatorics for the class of "vexillary'' matrix Schubert varieties. We initiate a study of general diagonal degenerations, relating them to a neglected formula of Lascoux (2002) in terms of the $6$-vertex ice model (recently rediscovered by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2018) in the guise of "bumpless pipe dreams'').

Singularities of Schubert Varieties within a Right Cell
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 070, 9 pages • View PublicationBIB
We describe an algorithm which pattern embeds, in the sense of Woo-Yong, any Bruhat interval of a symmetric group into an interval whose extremes lie in the same right Kazhdan-Lusztig cell. This apparently harmless fact has applications in finding examples of reducible associated varieties of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-highest weight modules, as well as in the study of $W$-graphs for symmetric groups, and in comparing various bases of irreducible representations of the symmetric group or its Hecke algebra. For example, we are able to systematically produce many negative answers to a question from the 1980s of Borho-Brylinski and Joseph, which had been settled by Williamson via computer calculations only in 2014.

Bumpless pipe dreams and alternating sign matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In their work on the infinite flag variety, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2018) introduced objects called bumpless pipe dreams and used them to give a formula for double Schubert polynomials. We extend this formula to the setting of K-theory, giving an expression for double Grothendieck polynomials as a sum over a larger class of bumpless pipe dreams. Our proof relies on techniques found in an unpublished manuscript of Lascoux (2002). Lascoux showed how to write double Grothendieck polynomials as a sum over alternating sign matrices. We explain how to view the Lam-Lee-Shimozono formula as a disguised special case of Lascoux's alternating sign matrix formula. Knutson, Miller, and Yong (2009) gave a tableau formula for vexillary Grothendieck polynomials. We recover this formula by showing vexillary marked bumpless pipe dreams and flagged set-valued tableaux are in weight preserving bijection. Finally, we give a bijection between Hecke bumpless pipe dreams and decreasing tableaux. The restriction of this bijection to Edelman-Greene bumpless pipe dreams solves a problem of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono.

Self-dual intervals in the Bruhat order
Published in Selecta Mathematica volume 26, Article number: 77 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Björner-Ekedahl prove that general intervals $[e,w]$ in Bruhat order are "top-heavy", with at least as many elements in the $i$-th corank as the $i$-th rank. Well-known results of Carrell and of Lakshmibai-Sandhya give the equality case: $[e,w]$ is rank-symmetric if and only if the permutation $w$ avoids the patterns $3412$ and $4231$ and these are exactly those $w$ such that the Schubert variety $X_w$ is smooth. In this paper we study the finer structure of rank-symmetric intervals $[e,w]$, beyond their rank functions. In particular, we show that these intervals are still "top-heavy" if one counts cover relations between different ranks. The equality case in this setting occurs when $[e,w]$ is self-dual as a poset; we characterize these $w$ by pattern avoidance and in several other ways.

A bijective proof of Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kohnert proposed the first monomial positive formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for certain unit cell diagrams obtained from the Rothe diagram of a permutation. Billey, Jockusch and Stanley gave the first proven formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for compatible sequences of reduced words of a permutation. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between these two models, thereby definitively proving Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials.

Newton-Okounkov polytopes of Schubert varieties arising from cluster structures

The theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies is a generalization of that of Newton polytopes for toric varieties, and it gives a systematic method of constructing toric degenerations of projective varieties. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov bodies of Schubert varieties from the theory of cluster algebras. We construct Newton-Okounkov bodies using specific valuations which generalize extended g-vectors in cluster theory, and discuss how these bodies are related to string polytopes and Nakashima-Zelevinsky polytopes.

Bruhat inversions in Weyl groups and torsion-free classes over preprojective algebras
Published in Comm. Algebra 49 (2021), no. 5, 2156--2189 • View PublicationBIB
For an element $w$ of the simply-laced Weyl group, Buan-Iyama-Reiten-Scott defined a subcategory $\mathcal{F}(w)$ of a module category over a preprojective algebra of Dynkin type. This paper aims at studying categorical properties of $\mathcal{F}(w)$ via its connection with the root system. We show that by taking dimension vectors, simple objects in $\mathcal{F}(w)$ bijectively correspond to Bruhat inversion roots of $w$. As an application, we obtain a combinatorial criterion for $\mathcal{F}(w)$ to satisfy the Jordan-Hölder property (JHP). To achieve this, we develop a method to find simple objects in a general torsion-free class by using a brick sequence associated to a maximal green sequence of it. For type A case, we give a diagrammatic construction of simple objects, and show that (JHP) can be characterized via a forest-like permutation, introduced by Bousquet-Mélou and Butler in the study of Schubert varieties.
