A Schubert variety in the complete flag manifold $GL_n/B$ is Levi-spherical if the action of a Borel subgroup in a Levi subgroup of a standard parabolic has a dense orbit. We give a combinatorial classification of these Schubert varieties. This establishes a conjecture of the latter two authors, and a new formulation in terms of standard Coxeter elements. Our proof uses the theory of key polynomials (type A Demazure module characters).

We study a class of combinatorially-defined polynomial ideals which are generated by minors of a generic symmetric matrix. Included within this class are the symmetric determinantal ideals, the symmetric ladder determinantal ideals, and the symmetric Schubert determinantal ideals of A. Fink, J. Rajchgot, and S. Sullivant. Each ideal in our class is a type C analog of a Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal of A. Woo and A. Yong; that is, it is the scheme-theoretic defining ideal of the intersection of a type C Schubert variety with a type C opposite Schubert cell, appropriately coordinatized. The Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals that arise are exactly those where the opposite cell is $123$-avoiding. Our main results include Gröbner bases for these ideals, prime decompositions of their initial ideals (which are Stanley-Reisner ideals of subword complexes) and combinatorial formulas for their multigraded Hilbert series in terms of pipe dreams.

We show that for any permutation $w$ that avoids a certain set of 13 patterns of lengths 5 and 6, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$ can be expressed as the determinant of a matrix of elementary symmetric polynomials in a manner similar to the Jacobi-Trudi identity. For such $w$, this determinantal formula is equivalent to a (signed) subtraction-free expansion of $\mathfrak S_w$ in the basis of standard elementary monomials.

We introduce an additive basis of the integral cohomology ring of the Peterson variety which reflects the geometry of certain subvarieties of the Peterson variety. We explain the positivity of the structure constants from a geometric viewpoint, and provide a manifestly positive combinatorial formula for them. We also prove that our basis coincides with the additive basis introduced by Harada-Tymoczko.

A normal variety $X$ is called $H$-spherical for the action of the complex reductive group $H$ if it contains a dense orbit of some Borel subgroup of $H$. We resolve a conjecture of Hodges--Yong by showing that their spherical permutations are characterized by permutation pattern avoidance. Together with results of Gao--Hodges--Yong this implies that the sphericality of a Schubert variety $X_w$ with respect to the largest possible Levi subgroup is characterized by this same pattern avoidance condition.

Richardson varieties are obtained as intersections of Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. We provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside Grassmannians by studying Gröbner degenerations of their corresponding ideals. These degenerations are parametrised by block diagonal matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels-Zelevinsky. We associate a weight vector to each block diagonal matching field and study its corresponding initial ideal. In particular, we characterise when such ideals are toric, hence providing a family of toric degenerations for Richardson varieties.
Given a Richardson variety $X_{w}^v$ and a weight vector ${\bf w}_\ell$ arising from a matching field, we consider two ideals: an ideal $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ obtained by restricting the initial of the Plücker ideal to a smaller polynomial ring, and a toric ideal defined as the kernel of a monomial map $φ_\ell|_w^v$. We first characterise the monomial-free ideals of form $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$. Then we construct a family of tableaux in bijection with semi-standard Young tableaux which leads to a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient ring. Finally, we prove that when $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ is monomial-free and the initial ideal in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$ is quadratically generated, then all three ideals in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$, $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ and ker$(φ_\ell|_w^v)$ coincide, and provide a toric degeneration of $X_w^v$.
Identities for Schur-type determinants and pfaffians
We give a simple formula for some determinants, and an analogous formula for pfaffians, both of which are polynomial identities. The second involve some expressions that interpolate between determinants and pfaffians. We give several tableau formulas for difference operators in Types A and C, as well as other operators that appear in the "enriched", or "back-stable" Schubert polynomials. There are also tableau formulas for the enriched Schubert polynomials for vexillary and $321$-avoiding permutations.
The isomorphism problem for Schubert varieties
Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.

Schubert polynomials form a basis of all polynomials and appear in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds. The vanishing problem for Schubert polynomials asks if a coefficient of a Schubert polynomial is zero. We give a tableau criterion to solve this problem, from which we deduce the first polynomial time algorithm. These results are obtained from new characterizations of the Schubitope, a generalization of the permutahedron defined for any subset of the n x n grid. In contrast, we show that computing these coefficients explicitly is #P-complete.
The "Grothendieck to Lascoux" conjecture
This report formulates a conjectural combinatorial rule that positively expands Grothendieck polynomials into Lascoux polynomials. It generalizes one such formula expanding Schubert polynomials into key polynomials, and refines another one expanding stable Grothendieck polynomials.
Inclusion-exclusion on Schubert polynomials
We prove that an inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of permutations that avoid the patterns 1432 and 1423 is nonnegative. Our theorem implies a partial affirmative answer to a recent conjecture of Yibo Gao about principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. We propose a general framework for finding inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of all permutations.
Schubert Polynomials in Types A and C
Enriched versions of type A Schubert polynomials are constructed with coefficients in a polynomial ring in variables $c_1, c_2, \ldots$. Specializing these variables to $0$ recovers the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger; specializing them to certain power series recovers the back-stable double Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono; specializing them to Schur Q-polynomials relates them to the type C double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse. Many formulas for classical Schubert polynomials generalize to this setting. They give, and are characterized by, formulas for degeneracy loci.
Schubert polynomials and the inhomogeneous TASEP on a ring
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The \emph{inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process} (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. (Otherwise nothing happens.) In the case that $y_i=0$ for all $i$, the stationary distribution was conjecturally linked to Schubert polynomials by Lam-Williams, and explicit formulas for steady state probabilities were subsequently given in terms of multiline queues by Ayyer-Linusson and Arita-Mallick. In the case of general $y_i$, Cantini showed that $n$ of the $n!$ states have probabilities proportional to double Schubert polynomials. In this paper we introduce the class of \emph{evil-avoiding permutations}, which are the permutations avoiding the patterns $2413, 4132, 4213$ and $3214$. We show that there are $\frac{(2+\sqrt{2})^{n-1}+(2-\sqrt{2})^{n-1}}{2}$ evil-avoiding permutations in $S_n$, and for each evil-avoiding permutation $w$, we give an explicit formula for the steady state probability $ψ_w$ as a product of double Schubert polynomials. We also show that the Schubert polynomials that arise in these formulas are flagged Schur functions, and give a bijection in this case between multiline queues and semistandard Young tableaux.
Schubert puzzles and integrability II: multiplying motivic Segre classes

In Schubert Puzzles and Integrability I we proved several "puzzle rules" for computing products of Schubert classes in K-theory (and sometimes equivariant K-theory) of d-step flag varieties. The principal tool was "quantum integrability", in several variants of the Yang--Baxter equation; this let us recognize the Schubert structure constants as q->0 limits of certain matrix entries in products of R- (and other) matrices of quantized affine algebra representations. In the present work we give direct cohomological interpretations of those same matrix entries but at finite q: they compute products of "motivic Segre classes", closely related to K-theoretic Maulik--Okounkov stable classes living on the cotangent bundles of the flag varieties. Without q->0, we avoid some divergences that blocked fuller understanding of d=3,4. The puzzle computations are then explained (in cohomology onlyin this work, not K-theory) in terms of Lagrangian convolutions between Nakajima quiver varieties. More specifically, the conormal bundle to the diagonal inclusion of a flag variety factors through a quiver variety that is not a cotangent bundle, and it is on that intermediate quiver variety that the R-matrix calculation occurs.
Enumerating Staircase Diagrams and Smooth Schubert Varieties over type $E$ Dynkin Diagrams
We enumerate the number of staircase diagrams over classically finite $E$-type Dynkin diagrams, extending the work of Richmond and Slofstra (Staircase Diagrams and Enumeration of smooth Schubert varieties) and completing the enumeration of staircase diagrams over finite type Dynkin diagrams. The staircase diagrams are in bijection to smooth and rationally smooth Schubert varieties over $E$-type thereby giving an enumeration of these varieties.
Puzzle Model for Bumpless Pipe Dream
In this note, a new puzzle is introduced where the pipe dream and bumpless pipe dream can be played simultaneously. Using these, a combinatorial proof of the (ordinary) Schubert polynomials in terms of bumpless pipe dream is given. The main tool is the Yang--Baxter equation.

We define and study proper permutations. Properness is a geometrically natural necessary criterion for a Schubert variety to be Levi-spherical. We prove the probability that a random permutation is proper goes to zero in the limit.

Flagged Schur modules generalize the irreducible representations of the general linear group under the action of the Borel subalgebra. Their characters include many important generalizations of Schur polynomials, such as Demazure characters, flagged skew Schur polynomials, and Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we prove the characters of flagged Schur modules can be computed using a simple combinatorial algorithm due to Kohnert if and only if the indexing diagram is northwest. This gives a new proof that characters of flagged Schur modules are nonnegative sums of Demazure characters and gives a representation theoretic interpretation for Kohnert polynomials.
An orthodontia formula for Grothendieck polynomials
We give a new operator formula for Grothendieck polynomials that generalizes Magyar's Demazure operator formula for Schubert polynomials. Our proofs are purely combinatorial, contrasting with the geometric and representation theoretic tools used by Magyar. We apply our formula to prove a necessary divisibility condition for a monomial to appear in a given Grothendieck polynomial.
Complete quadrics: Schubert calculus for Gaussian models and semidefinite programming

We establish connections between: the maximum likelihood degree (ML-degree) for linear concentration models, the algebraic degree of semidefinite programming (SDP), and Schubert calculus for complete quadrics. We prove a conjecture by Sturmfels and Uhler on the polynomiality of the ML-degree. We also prove a conjecture by Nie, Ranestad and Sturmfels providing an explicit formula for the degree of SDP. The interactions between the three fields shed new light on the asymptotic behaviour of enumerative invariants for the variety of complete quadrics. We also extend these results to spaces of general matrices and of skew-symmetric matrices.
