The Schur positivity of $\nabla m_μ$
Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler conjectured in 1999 that, for all partitions $μ,λ\vdash n$, the polynomial $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle \nabla m_μ, s_λ\rangle$ has nonnegative integer coefficients, where $\nabla$ is the Bergeron--Garsia nabla operator, which acts diagonally on the modified Macdonald basis, and $m_μ$ is the monomial symmetric function. In this article, we prove this conjecture, and more generally that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle\nabla^r m_μ,s_λ\rangle\in\mathbb{N}[q,t]$ for all $r\geq 1$. We establish a recursion showing that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}m_μ$ has an expansion with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}[q]$ in the symmetric functions $C_α(1)$, where $C_a$ denotes the operator introduced by Haglund, Morse and Zabrocki. Combining this expansion with the compositional shuffle theorems of Carlsson--Mellit and Mellit, and with the Schur positivity of LLT polynomials, completes the proof. The same method, using the $e$-positivity of column LLT polynomials after the substitution $q\mapsto q+1$, also gives an $e$-positive analogue.

The Graph Algebra I: Representation-Theoretic Structure
The paper studies the graph algebra whose monomial basis is naturally indexed by simple graphs on a fixed set of vertices. This algebra is at the same time the algebra of pseudo-Boolean functions on the Boolean cube and a natural object of algebraic combinatorics, related to the Boolean lattice of subsets of the edge set of the complete graph. The main aim of the paper is to study two compatible representation-theoretic structures on this algebra: the action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, arising from the operators of adding and deleting one edge, and the action of the pair group $S_n^{(2)}$, induced by the renumbering of vertices. It is proved that the graph algebra with this $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-action is isomorphic to a tensor power of the standard two-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module, and on this basis its decomposition into irreducible $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-modules is obtained. Primitive spaces, that is, the kernels of the edge-deletion operator on rank components, are also described, and it is shown that they have a natural interpretation in terms of two-row Specht modules. It is then established that the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-action commutes with the action of the pair group. It follows that the space of graph invariants also inherits the structure of an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module. Using Schur--Weyl duality, primitive invariants are described through the fixed parts of the restrictions of two-row Specht modules from the full symmetric group on the edge set to the pair group. As a consequence, the classical enumeration of non-isomorphic graphs by the number of edges receives a representation-theoretic refinement: the orbital components entering the Burnside--Polya formula decompose into natural primitive contributions associated with the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-structure and two-row Specht modules.

Transition Matrices between Shifted $t$-Schur Bases and Cyclotomic Schur $Q$-Positivity
For a strict partition $λ$, let $\mathcal Q_λ(X;t)=Q_λ[X-tX]$ be the shifted $t$-Schur function arising from the modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator on the odd power-sum ring. We study transition matrices between the shifted bases with parameters $t$ and $s$. The relative scaling operator is diagonal in the odd power-sum basis, leading to explicit spectral data, determinant and trace formulas, weighted symmetry, a spin-character formula, and a transition Cauchy identity. For the cyclotomic specialization $C_{λμ}^{[M]}(t)=C_{λμ}(t^M,t)$, the relative operator becomes plethystic substitution by $1+t+\cdots+t^{M-1}$. We prove Schur $Q$-positivity and reciprocity, derive factorization and root-of-unity rank formulas, and give an exact computation method. For $M=2$, all one-row transitions are computed explicitly, and the nonzero coefficients are unimodal.

Mixed Products of Modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu Operators
Let $\mathcal Y(z;t)$ be the modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator on the odd power-sum ring. We first point out that this operator can be obtained from the classical neutral operator by a simple diagonal change of variables. We then study products in which the two deformation parameters are not necessarily the same. For two parameters $t$ and $s$, we compute the scalar factor that appears in the mixed product. This factor has an explicit exponential form and, in a completed setting, can also be written as a quotient of infinite $t$-Pochhammer products. We also give a recurrence for its coefficients, a product formula for several mixed operators, and formulas for the coefficients obtained after applying the operators to $\mathbf 1$. A particularly simple case occurs when $s=t^M$. In this case the scalar factor becomes the finite quotient $(u;t)_M/(-u;t)_M$. Its coefficients are signed principal specializations of one-row Schur $Q$-functions. As a result, after removing the signs, these coefficients are nonnegative palindromic polynomials. We also give a Gaussian-binomial formula and a finite-order recurrence.

Coordinate projections of $c$-vectors of cluster algebras from the annulus
For an acyclic cluster algebra, the $c$-vectors are, up to sign, the real Schur roots of the associated root system. We study the two-coordinate projections $(c_v, c_w)$ of this configuration: when the difference $c_v - c_w$ is bounded the image lies in a band of lattice lines, and we ask when the projection fills that band. A band-existence dichotomy, valid in every acyclic type, shows the difference is bounded if and only if the null root satisfies $δ_v = δ_w$. For affine type $\widetilde{A}_n$ (the annulus), in the source-sink orientation, we resolve the filling question completely: every coordinate projection fills its band except along the source-sink diagonal, which carries only the finite regular part. The obstruction is the Auslander--Reiten defect, which a projection sees on its diagonal exactly when the defect is a coordinate difference; the only such pair is the source-sink pair of $\widetilde{A}_n$, so the pattern depends on the chosen seed. More generally, every banded pair of null-root coefficient one fills, except these diagonals. Off the diagonal a banded pair in $\widetilde{E}_7$ fails to fill, so non-filling is not confined to type $\widetilde{A}_n$; a computation classifies the pairs of coefficient at least two over a range of affine types, where this $\widetilde{E}_7$ pair is the only further failure, and the general classification remains open.

Sharp bounds for minimal dependencies of linear-form powers
Motivated by the dimension-bound part of a problem of Bukh, we study Veronese circuits: how large can the span of $t$ linear forms be if their $m$-th powers are minimally linearly dependent? We prove the sharp finite dimension bound \[ \dim L\leq \frac{t+m-2}{m}. \] Here $\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_t$ are nonzero homogeneous linear forms over a field of characteristic zero, the powers $\ell_1^m,\ldots,\ell_t^m$ form a circuit, and $L=\Span\{\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_t\}$. Rational-normal-curve configurations attain equality for infinitely many pairs $(t,\dim L)$; in particular, the affine bound itself is sharp and the optimal leading constant in Bukh's question is $1/m$. The proof uses a coding-theoretic translation: the coefficient row space of the powers is the $m$-th Schur power of the coefficient code, and the minimality hypothesis makes this Schur power a full-support hyperplane to which the Schur-product Kneser theorem of Mirandola and Zémor applies. The same method yields flat-concentration and interpolation criteria, a Cayley--Bacharach lower bound, Segre--Veronese and positive-characteristic variants, and Hilbert-function constraints for equality and near-equality in Veronese circuits.

A Modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu Operator and a Shifted $t$-Gessel Formula
The recent work of Greaves, Jing, and Zhu gives an operator construction for the $t$-Schur functions and the $t$-Schur measure. Motivated by their construction, we consider the same type of vertex operator on the odd power-sum ring. Its Fourier modes generate a family of symmetric functions indexed by strict partitions, which we call shifted $t$-Schur functions. These functions specialize to Schur $Q$-functions at $t=0$. We derive a two-row formula, a Pfaffian Giambelli formula, a Cauchy identity, and a finite shifted Gessel-type formula. This note is intended as a first step toward further study of the odd-operator analogue of the Greaves--Jing--Zhu construction.

Hall-Littlewood functions in noncommuting variables
In 2022 Aliniaeifard, Li, and van Willigenburg defined Schur functions in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCSym), answering an open question posed by Rosas and Sagan in 2004. These Schur functions are not monomial positive, since they are defined via a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. We introduce Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ indexed by set partitions $π$ in noncommuting variables ${\bf x}=({\bf x}_1,{\bf x}_2,\ldots)$, and define Schur functions in noncommuting variables to be ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})={\bf P}_π({\bf x};0)$. We prove that the set of Hall-Littlewood functions $\{{\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)\}$ for all set partitions $π$ of $[n]$ forms a $\mathbb{Q}[t]$-basis of NCSym of homogeneous degree $n$, and that this basis is invariant under any permutation acting on set partitions. These Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym map to classical Hall-Littlewood functions under commutation, up to a scalar factor. We also show that the Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ naturally refine the lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. Specifically, the Schur functions ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})$ are monomial positive and refine the lifted Schur function introduced by Rosas and Sagan. Moreover, we introduce a star product of two polynomials in NCSym and develop the star-multiplication rule for a lifted and a non-lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. This rule is a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for two Hall-Littlewood functions and, in particular, of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Finally, our approach extends to the algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCQSym) indexed by set compositions.

Injectivity of symmetric polynomial maps on partitions
Introduced by Ballantine, Beck, and Merca, the elementary symmetric partition function $\mathrm{pre}_k$, defined on the set of partitions with at least $k$ parts, has been a topic of recent interest. We prove that $\mathrm{pre}_k$ is injective on the set of $m$-ary partitions for positive integers $m \ge k$, generalizing the binary $k = 2$ result of Ballantine, Beck, and Merca, and complementing a result of Hadelyn, Niergarth, Li and Li showing that, for each $k \ge 3$, $\mathrm{pre}_k$ is not injective on partitions of $n$ with length $2k$ for infinitely many $n$. We introduce the skew Schur partition function $\mathrm{prs}_{λ'/μ'}$, prove injectivity results for particular choices of $λ',μ'$, and describe an application to representation theory.

Schur rings over cyclic groups having Almost Commutative Terwilliger algebras
Terwilliger algebras are subalgebras of a matrix algebra constructed from an association scheme. Rie Tanaka defined what it means for a Terwilliger algebra to be almost commutative and gave five equivalent conditions in the case where the association scheme is commutative. A sixth condition for a Terwilliger algebra coming from a commutative Schur ring to be almost commutative has since been discovered. In this paper we first provide a classification of orbit Schur rings that produce an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra for a finite cyclic group. In particular, we show that the subgroup of automorphisms used to form the orbit Schur ring is either trivial, or the whole automorphism group when the cyclic group has prime power order. If the cyclic group has order $2^n$, these are the only options. If the cyclic group has order $p^n$, for an odd prime $p$, then the automorphism subgroup of order $p^{n-1}$ also works. If the group has a non-prime power order then the only orbit Schur ring that produces an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra comes from the trivial subgroup of the automorphism group. We then give a condition for when a wedge product of Schur rings produces an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra. This allows us to determine exactly when a Schur ring over a cyclic group produces an almost commutative Terwilliger algebra.

On the Schur-positivity of various sets of set partitions
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to two different notions of descent. In the first case, the Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings. In the second case, the Schur functions correspond to two-rows Young diagrams, and the coefficients are partial sums of associated Bell numbers. A key ingredient of our approach in the second case is the notion of a removable singleton, defined algebraically and shown to admit an equivalent combinatorial interpretation via jeu-de-taquin rectification of skew tableaux. As an application, we establish Schur positivity for various classes of symmetric functions indexed by non-crossing partitions and partitions with a given number of parts. We provide an explicit combinatorial description of the tableaux that contribute to the Schur expansion, and we connects the obtained coefficients to some known integer sequences.

A skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for Hopf dual pairs
We develop a uniform skew Murnaghan--Nakayama theory for graded Hopf dual pairs equipped with a nondegenerate Hopf pairing. Using the completed Cauchy element, its grouplike factorization, and the resulting partial contraction operators, we establish a general skew Cauchy identity together with an abstract skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. Specializing this framework recovers and extends the classical skew Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for symmetric functions, and yields new skew Murnaghan--Nakayama formulas in several settings, including the dual pairs $(\mathrm{NSym}, \mathrm{QSym}) $ and $(Λ^{(k)}, Λ_{(k)}) $ arising in $k$-Schur theory, as well as the type $C$ affine Grassmannian context. As applications, we obtain generating functions for irreducible characters of Ariki--Koike algebras, including their type $A$ and type $B$ specializations, as well as Hecke--Clifford algebras and $\mathfrak q$-rook monoid algebras. We also give ribbon-tableau expansions for skew $(q,t)$-Kostka polynomials and for the entries of the inverse transition matrix, thereby answering a question of Carbonara (1998). Finally, by specializing the auxiliary alphabet $Y$ to sums of powers of primitive roots of unity, we derive a skew plethystic Murnaghan--Nakayama formula together with a Schur expansion for skew modular Schur functions; as a further consequence, we confirm Walker's conjecture (1994) by showing that if the transition from the modular Schur functions to the Schur basis is trivial in the row indexed by $λ$, then $λ$ must be a $k$-core.

Touchard-Riordan Polynomials and Schur-positivity of Set Partitions
Published in EPTCS 445, 2026, pp. 1-9 • View PublicationBIB
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur-positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to a descent set function that considers i as descent, if i and i+1 share a block in the partition. The Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings.

Uncrowding the 5-Vertex Model: RSK and Crystal Structures
While the uncrowding algorithm on set-valued tableaux has long been instrumental in proving the Schur positivity of stable symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, lattice models have emerged as a modern framework for investigating symmetric functions, in particular symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In this work, we synthesize these combinatorial and lattice-theoretic approaches by defining both the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK) correspondence and the uncrowding operation directly on a 5-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai and its subsequent reinterpretation by Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber. Our lattice-based RSK formulation yields a powerful new result: the direct construction of the associated crystal structure on the states of the 5-vertex model.
On rational representations and rational group algebra of $\operatorname{GL}_2(q)$
In this article, we study rational representations of $G=\operatorname{GL}_2(q)$, where $q$ is a prime power. Let $ρ$ be an irreducible representation of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then $ρ$ affords the character \[ Ω(χ)=m_{\mathbb{Q}}(χ)\sum_{σ\in\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(χ)/\mathbb{Q})}χ^σ, \] for some irreducible complex character $χ$ of $G$, where $m_{\mathbb{Q}}(χ)$ denotes the Schur index of $χ$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, with the converse also holding. We obtain a combinatorial description for the counting of inequivalent irreducible $\mathbb{Q}$-representations of $G$ of distinct degrees. Furthermore, we present a method to construct an irreducible rational matrix representation $ρ$ of $G$ affording the character $Ω(χ)$, where $χ$ is an irreducible complex character of $G$ arising from parabolic induction. Finally, using the results from the rational representations of $G$, we derive an explicit combinatorial formula, depending only on $q$, for the Wedderburn decomposition of $\mathbb{Q}G$.
Sprout Symmetric Functions: Part 1
A \emph{sprout sequence} is a sequence $\frakr=(R_0=1,R_1,R_2,\dots)$ of symmetric functions in the variables $\bmx=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ over a field $K$ generated from a power series $F(t)=1+a_1t+a_2t^2+\cdots$ by the rule $\sum_{n\geq 0}R_nt^n = \prod_{i\geq 1} F(x_it)$. The power series $F(t)$ is called the \emph{seed} of $\frakr$. This concept originated in the work of Littlewood and Richardson (though not with the name ``sprout sequence''), and numerous examples of sprout sequences have appeared in the literature. They are related to chromatic Tutte polynomials of complete graphs and complete hypergraphs, binomial posets, upper homogeneous (upho) posets, topological genera, etc. We first develop the basic theory of sprout sequences and then look at the special case $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$. We give five characterizations of sprout sequences and consider the expansion of sprout symmetric functions in terms of well-known symmetric function bases. The Schur positivity, elementary symmetric function positivity, and complete homogeneous symmetric function positivity of $R_n$ for all $n$ are completely characterized using the Edrei-Thoma theorem from the theory of total positivity. The seed $F(t)=\sec(\sqrt{t})$ is especially interesting. The expansion of $R_n$ in the power sum or monomial basis is related to alternating permutations. The Schur function expansion is related to standard Young skew tableaux. The expansion in terms of the complete symmetric functions has nonnegative integer coefficients, but we don't know a combinatorial interpretation. Finally we give a formula for $R_n$ as a sum of chromatic symmetric functions of interval orders.

The V/L recursion for Macdonald's 7th Variation Schur polynomials
We generalize and prove the recursive relation \[ S_λ(V) = \sum_{L\subseteq V\text{ line}} S_λ(V \mathbin{/\mkern-5mu/} L) \] conjectured by I. G. Macdonald for his "7th variation" of the Schur functions. This variation is a family of polynomials over a finite field that mimic the (straight and skew) Schur polynomials using powers of the Frobenius.

The limits of Schur multipliers in Pólya conversion problems for the $q$-permanent function
This paper studies generalized Pólya conversion problems for the $q$-permanent \[ \operatorname{P}_q(A)=\sum_{σ\in S_n} q^{\ell(σ)} a_{1,σ(1)} \cdots a_{n,σ(n)}, \] where $q\in\mathbb{C}^*$ and $\ell(σ)$ is the permutation length. We show that for $n\geq 3$ and $q\neq \pm1$, the $q$-permanent is not linearly convertible to the determinant or the permanent, and we completely classify and give a geometric interpretation of the special case $n=2$. Focusing on Schur multiplier transformations, we characterize the space of Schur multiplier preservers. For $|q|\neq1$, the preserver exponents is a $(2n-2)$-dimensional vector space consisting of additive matrices satisfying a discrete Monge relation. In contrast, for $q$ on the unit circle, the solution space becomes a countable union of affine lattices. For lower Hessenberg matrices, we prove that the rigidity phenomenon disappears, yielding an explicit determinantal reduction of the $q$-permanent and an $O(n^3)$ evaluation algorithm. The central results of this paper establish sharp rigidity thresholds governing permutational symmetries and mixed conversion identities. First, we classify permutational converter exponents and show that, for $n\geq4$, the admissible symmetries are precisely the elements of the dihedral group. Second, we solve a mixed conversion problem that expresses the $q$-permanent as a linear combination of the determinant and the permanent, and prove that the corresponding solution space is nonempty if and only if $n\leq4$, in which case it decomposes into finitely many affine components modeled on the preserver exponent space. This mixed formulation yields a direct algebraic characterization of the $q$-permanent's zero locus for $n \le 4$ via a generalized Pólya identity.

Schur positivity of the nabla operator on two-column modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials
In this paper, we investigate the Schur positivity of modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials indexed by two-column partitions under the action of the $\nabla$ operator. Specifically, we resolve two conjectures posed by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler in the two-column case. Furthermore, our approach demonstrates that these results can be extended to arbitrary powers $\nabla^k$ for all integers $k\geq 1$.

A concise proof of cylindric Schur positivity
Cylindric Schur functions are a family of symmetric functions that generalize skew Schur functions. We give a short proof that skew cylindric Schur functions expand positively in terms of non-skew cylindric Schur functions. In particular, we show that the expansion coefficients are fusion coefficients.
