Disordered Schur Measures
In this paper, we introduce and study random Schur measures whose parameters are sampled from the Circular Unitary Ensemble. We show that Schur measures with CUE disorder exhibit behavior reminiscent of spin glasses.
Off-diagonal Rado number for $x+y+c=z$ and $x+y+k=z$
The study of Ramsey-type problems for linear equations originated with Schur's theorem and was later placed in a systematic framework by Richard Rado. In the off-diagonal setting, one fixes a pair of distinct linear equations $(\mathcal{E}_1, \mathcal{E}_2)$ and asks for the least integer $N$ such that every red--blue coloring of $\{1, 2, \dots, N\}$ must yield either a red solution to $\mathcal{E}_1$ or a blue solution to $\mathcal{E}_2$. This threshold integer is referred to as the off-diagonal Rado number of the system $(\mathcal{E}_1, \mathcal{E}_2)$. In this work, we study the discrete and continuous off-diagonal Rado number for non-homogeneous linear system of equations $x+y+c=z$ and $x+y+k=z$ where $c\le k$. We determine the exact two-color discrete and continuous off-diagonal Rado number $R_2(c,k)$ associated with this system of equations.
More minor summation formulae
We prove determinantal-Pfaffian formulae that simultaneously generalise the Pfaffian minor summation formula of Ishikawa and Wakayama and Byun's recent minor summation formula. These formulae are based on factorisation formulae for the determinant of the sum of a skew-symmetric matrix and a rank-1 matrix. Applications include a Cauchy-type identity for skew Schur functions.
Schur complements for tensors and multilinear commutative rank
We show that three notions of rank for matrices of multilinear forms are equivalent. This result generalizes a classical result of Flanders, corrects a minor hole in work of Fortin and Reutenauer, answers a question of Lampert on the relation between the analytic and slice ranks of trilinear forms, and establishes a special case of the conjecture that the analytic and partition ranks of a tensor are equivalent.
A sign-reversing involution for the antipode of Schur functions
We resolve a question posed by Benedetti and Sagan by constructing a signreversing involution on Takeuchi's expansion that yields the antipode for the ring of symmetric functions in terms of the Schur basis.
On the Adjacency spectra of alternating-oriented $n$-gonal staircase digraphs
For integers $n \ge 3$ and $r \ge 1$, let $Γ_{n,r}$ be the alternating-oriented digraph obtained by gluing $r$ directed $n$-cycles along a single edge in a staircase pattern, and let $A_{n,r}$ be its adjacency matrix. A canonical $n$-layer partition puts $A_{n,r}$ into an $n$-cyclic block form and isolates a cyclic product core $K_{n,r}$, so the nonzero spectrum of $A_{n,r}$ is obtained from that of $K_{n,r}$ by taking $n$th roots. We show that $K_{n,r}$ is totally nonnegative and irreducible, and hence its nonzero eigenvalues are real, positive, and simple. It follows that all nonzero eigenvalues of $A_{n,r}$ are simple and occur in $\exp(2πi/n)$-orbits, forming unions of regular $n$-gons in the complex plane. A one-step Schur complement yields a three-term recursion in $r$ for the characteristic polynomials $Φ_{n,r} \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$. This determines both the multiplicity of the eigenvalue $0$ and the number of nonzero eigenvalues, and leads to a generating function with cubic denominator. Applying a Tran-type confinement theorem gives the uniform bound $ρ(A_{n,r}) \le (27/4)^{1/n}$ and the sharp limit $\displaystyle\lim_{r \to \infty} ρ(A_{n,r}) = (27/4)^{1/n}$ for each fixed $n$. Finally, specializing at $x=1$ relates $Φ_{n,r}(1)$ to Padovan spiral numbers and yields a complete classification of rational nonzero eigenvalues.
Mirabolic Hecke algebras, Schur-Weyl duality and Frobenius character formulas
We first introduce a new presentation for the mirabolic Hecke algebra $\mathscr{H}_{n,R}(q)$ over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$ and derive a new basis. Based on this presentation, specializing to the case of $\mathscr{H}_n(q)$ over the field $\mathbb{C}(q)$, we construct a basis for the cocenter of $\mathscr{H}_n(q)$, which facilitates the definition of its character table. We further establish a Schur--Weyl duality between $\mathscr{H}_n(q)$ and the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_r)$. As an application, we obtain Frobenius character formulas for the irreducible characters of $\mathscr{H}_n(q)$ within the ring of symmetric functions. Finally, we derive a recursive Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for the computation of the character table.
Off-diagonal Rado number for $x+y+c=z$ and $x+qy=z$
Ramsey-type problems for linear equations began with Schur's theorem and were systematically generalized by Richard Rado. In the off-diagonal framework for two colors, one considers two different linear equations $(\mathcal{E}_1,\mathcal{E}_2)$ and determines the minimum integer $N$ for which any red-blue coloring of $\{1,2,...,N\}$ forces either a red solution of the equation $\mathcal{E}_1$ or a blue solution of the equation $\mathcal{E}_2$. In this work, we study off-diagonal Rado numbers for non-homogeneous linear equations of the forms $x+y+c=z$ and $x+qy=z$. We determine the exact two-color off-diagonal Rado number $R_2(c,q)$ associated with this system of equations.
A note on a cyclotomic-friendly application of RSK
We give a combinatorial realization of a level-$\ell$ Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence conjectured to exist by Song and Wang for cyclotomic Schur categories. We show that cyclotomic basis elements can be canonically reorganized into flagged block composition matrices encoding families of biwords, so that the correspondence is obtained by applying the classical RSK correspondence componentwise. This perspective identifies the level-$\ell$ correspondence as an iteration of classical RSK, specializing to the usual correspondence when $\ell=1$ and behaving naturally under restriction to lower levels.
Mixed jeu de taquin and a problem of Soojin Cho
Serrano (2010) introduced the shifted plactic monoid, governing Haiman's (1989) mixed insertion algorithm, as a type B analogue of the classical plactic monoid that connects jeu de taquin of Young tableaux with the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion algorithm. Serrano proposed a corresponding definition of skew shifted plactic Schur functions. Cho (2013) disproved Serrano's conjecture regarding this definition, by showing that the functions do not live in the desired ring and hence cannot provide an algebraic interpretation of tableau rectification or of the corresponding structure coefficients. Cho asked for a new definition with particular properties. We introduce such a definition and prove that it behaves as desired. We also introduce a new jeu de taquin theory that computes mixed insertion.
Vertex operators, infinite wedge representations, and correlation functions of the t-Schur measure
We study the $t$-Schur measure on partitions, defined by $ \mathbb{P}(λ)=Z^{-1}S_λ(x;t)s_λ(y) $, where $S_λ(x;t)$ denotes the $t$-Schur symmetric functions and $s_λ(y)$ the ordinary Schur functions, and $Z$ is the normalising constant. Using vertex operator calculus, we realise $S_λ(x;t)$ in the charged free-fermion Fock space, yielding a $t$-deformation of the classical boson-fermion correspondence. These realisations give vertex-algebraic proofs of the $t$-Cauchy identities and $t$-Gessel identity. Building on this framework, we compute the correlation functions of the $t$-Schur measure and show that the associated point process is determinantal, with an explicit correlation kernel. The Poissonised $t$-Plancherel measure appears as a specialisation of our construction, so its correlation functions follow as a corollary. As an application, we derive the limiting distribution for the length of the longest ascent pair in a random permutation. Our results interpolate the Schur case at $t=0$, connect to the Schur-$Q$ theory at $t=-1$, and provide a probabilistic interpretation of a natural $t$-refinement of increasing subsequences via a generalised RSK correspondence.
Classification of abelian Schur groups I
A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group if every $S$-ring over $G$ is schurian, i.e. associated in a natural way with a subgroup of $Sym(G)$ that contains all right translations of $G$. The list of all possible abelian Schur groups was obtained by Evdokimov, Kovács, and Ponomarenko in 2016. In two papers, we finish a classification of abelian Schur groups. In the present paper, we study schurity of several groups from the list. Namely, we prove that a direct product of the elementary abelian group of order 4 and a cyclic group, whose order is an odd prime power or a product of two distinct odd primes, is a Schur group and establish nonschurity of some other groups from the list.
Plethysm and orbit harmonics
Let $Π_{(b^a)}$ be the locus of unordered set partitions of $[ab]$ with $a$ blocks of size $b$. We embed unordered set partitions of $[n]$ into the affine space $\mathbb{C}^{\binom{[n]}{2}}$ with coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}\Big[\mathbf{x}_{\binom{[n]}{2}}\Big]$. Then, we apply orbit harmonics to $Π_{(2^a)}$ and $Π_{(a^2)}$, yielding graded $\mathfrak{S}_{2a}$-modules whose graded character formulae respectively refine the Schur expansions of $h_a[h_2]$ and $h_2[h_a]$ according to $λ_1$. We further extend this $λ_1$-separation phenomenon to quotients of $\mathbb{C}^{\binom{[n]}{2}}$ where $n$ is odd. Combining $Π_{(b^a)},Π_{(a^b)}$ and orbit harmonics, we propose a conjecture related to Foulkes' conjecture, and we prove the special case $b=2$. We also apply orbit harmonics to the locus $Π_{n,m}$ of unordered set partitions of $[n]$ without blocks of size greater than $m$, yielding a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $R(Π_{n,m})$. We determine the standard monomial basis of $R(Π_{n,m})$ with respect to any monomial order, as well as its graded character formula.
Temperley-Lieb Immanants, Key Positivity, and Demazure Crystals
The main goal of this paper is to extend three important Schur positivity results to key positivity, replacing all Schur polynomials in relevant expressions with flagged Schur polynomials. Namely, we first show that the Temperley-Lieb immanants of (many) flagged Jacobi-Trudi matrices are key positive. Using this result, we give a combinatorial rule for the key expansion of (most) products of flagged skew Schur polynomials, and also give a log concavity result inspired by that of Lam-Postnikov-Pylyavskyy. The main tools in our proofs are Demazure crystals, and the recently defined shuffle tableaux of Nguyen and Pylyavskyy. In order to prove our main results, we must develop a new characterization of Demazure crystals, which builds off of prior work of Assaf and Gonzalez. This characterization may be useful in other contexts.
Corrigendum to "Higher Lorentzian polynomials,...in codimension two" [International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 13, July 2025, arXiv:2208.05653]
A homogeneous bivariate $d$-form defines an $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix for each $i$ between $0$ and $d$. We use Hodge theory and Schur polynomials to prove that if the $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix of a form is totally nonnegative, then so is the $i$-rowed one. This fixes a gap in the main result of paper above.
Plethysm is in #BQP
Some representation-theoretic multiplicities, such as the Kostka and the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, admit a combinatorial interpretation that places their computation in the complexity class #P. Whether this holds more generally is considered an important open problem in mathematics and computer science, with relevance for geometric complexity theory and quantum information. Recent work has investigated the quantum complexity of particular multiplicities, such as the Kronecker coefficients and certain special cases of the plethysm coefficients.
Here, we show that a broad class of representation-theoretic multiplicities is in #BQP. In particular, our result implies that the plethysm coefficients are in #BQP, which was only known in special cases. It also implies all known results on the quantum complexity of previously studied coefficients as special cases, unifying, simplifying, and extending prior work. We obtain our result by multiple applications of the Schur transform. Recent work has improved its dependence on the local dimension, which is crucial for our work. We further describe a general approach for showing that representation-theoretic multiplicities are in #BQP that captures our approach as well as the approaches of prior work. We complement the above by showing that the same multiplicities are also naturally in GapP and obtain polynomial-time classical algorithms when certain parameters are fixed.
Efficient $k$-Sign Consistency Verification of Hankel Matrices via Schur Polynomials
We consider the problem of certifying (strict) $k$-sign consistency of a matrix, that is, whether all of its $k$-th order minors share the same (strict) sign. Although this problem is generally of combinatorial complexity, we show that for Hankel matrices it can be significantly simplified: our sufficient condition requires checking only the $k$-th order minors of a reshaped Hankel matrix with $k$ rows. Remarkably, when applied to the Hankel operator, this sufficient condition is also necessary. Comparable results were known only in the setting of (strictly) $k$-positive Hankel matrices and operators, in which all minors of order up to $k$ have the same (strict) sign.
More concretely, we derive a formula expressing the $k$-th order minors of Hankel matrices as nonnegative integer linear combinations of $k$-th order minors with consecutive row indices. Our derivation uses Schur polynomial theory to show that the $k$-th order minors of any matrix are nonnegative integer linear combinations of row-consecutive $k$-th order minors, meaning minors formed from distinct columns whose consecutive row indices need not coincide across columns. For Hankel matrices, these minors coincide -- up to sign changes arising from column swaps -- with the usual $k$-th order minors with consecutive row indices. Our main result then follows by showing that the sum of certain signed nonnegative integer coefficients equals the corresponding Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. In our problem, the nonnegativity of these coefficients ensures that negatively signed column permutations are cancelled by positively signed ones. Our results also extend naturally to Toeplitz matrices and operators, and we present a partial analogue for circulant matrices.
Permanents of matrix ensembles: computation, distribution, and geometry
We report on a computational and experimental study of permanents. On the computational side, we use the GPU to greaatly accelerate the computation of permanents over $\mathbb{C},$ $\mathbb{R},$ $\mathbb{F}_p$ and $\mathbb{Q}.$ In particular, we use this to compute the permanents of DFT and Schur matrices far beyond the ranges hitherto known. On the experimental side, we present two new observations. First, for Haar-distributed unitary matrices~$U$, the permanent $\perm(U)$ follows a circularly-symmetric complex Gaussian distribution $\mathcal{CN}(0,σ^2)$ -- we confirm this via a number of tests for $n$ up to~23 with $50{,}000$ samples. The DFT matrix permanent is an extreme outlier for every prime $n\ge 7$. In contrast, for Haar-random \emph{orthogonal} matrices~$O$, the permanent $\perm(O)$ is approximately real Gaussian but with positive excess kurtosis that decays as~$O(1/n)$, indicating slower convergence. For matrices with Gaussian entries (GUE, GOE, Ginibre), the permanent follows an $α$-stable distribution with stability index $α\approx 1.0$--$1.4$, well below the Gaussian value $α=2$.
Secondly, we study the permanent along geodesics on the unitary group. For the geodesic from the identity to the $n$-cycle permutation matrix, we find a universal scaling function $f(t)=\frac{1}{n}\ln|\perm(γ(t))|$ that is independent of~$n$ in the large-$n$ limit, with a midpoint value \[
\perm(γ({\textstyle\frac12}))
= (-1)^{(n-1)/2}\cdot 2e^{-n}\bigl(1+\tfrac{1}{3n}+O(n^{-2})\bigr) \] for odd~$n$ and zero for even~$n$. For the geodesic to the DFT matrix, the permanent recovers $10$--$40$ times above its valley minimum when $n$ is prime, but not when $n$ is composite -- a geodesic fingerprint of primality.
On statistics of prime parking functions, Łukasiewicz paths, and quasisymmetric functions
We recall that a parking function of length $n+1$ is said to be prime if removing any instance of 1 yields a parking function of length $n$. In this article, we study prime parking functions from multiple lenses. We derive an explicit formula for the average value of the total displacement of prime parking functions. We present a formula for the displacement-enumerator of prime parking functions that involves a sum over Łukasiewicz paths. We describe the one-to-one correspondence between parking functions and labeledŁukasiewicz paths via Dyck paths. We introduce the concept of $\ell$-forward differences and use this as a vehicle for examining ties, ascents, and descents in prime parking functions. We establish a link between Schur functions corresponding to the partition $(i,1^{n-i})$ and fundamental quasisymmetric functions indexed by prime parking function tie sets of size $n-i.$
Total Positivity of Analytic Bases through Symmetric Functions
This paper studies the bidiagonal factorization of the collocation matrices of analytic bases using symmetric functions. Explicit formulas for their initial minors are derived in terms of Schur functions. The structure of these formulas permits establishing sufficient conditions for the total positivity of generic systems of analytic functions. In addition, they have been found to lead to generalizations of the Cauchy identity for certain families of functions.
