Hook coefficients of chromatic functions

The chromatic symmetric function of a graph is a generalization of the chromatic polynomial. The key motivation for studying the structure of a chromatic symmetric function is to answer positivity conjectures by Stanley in 1995 and Gasharov in 1996. As a symmetric function one can write the chromatic symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. In this paper we address the positivity of the Schur coefficients when the parameter of the Schur function is a hook shape. Furthermore, when a graph is the incomparability graph of a poset with specific properties we construct a correspondence between acyclic orientations of the graph and P-tableaux with a hook shape.

Let $G$ be a finite group. There is a natural Galois correspondence between the permutation groups containing $G$ as a regular subgroup, and the Schur rings (S-rings) over~$G$. The problem we deal with in the paper, is to characterize those S-rings that are closed under this correspondence, when the group $G$ is cyclic (the schurity problem for circulant S-rings). It is proved that up to a natural reduction, the characteristic property of such an S-ring is to be a certain algebraic fusion of its coset closure introduced and studied in the paper. Basing on this characterization we show that the schurity problem is equivalent to the consistency of a modular linear system associated with a circulant S-ring under consideration. As a byproduct we show that a circulant S-ring is Galois closed if and only if so is its dual.

This paper uses the theory of dual equivalence graphs to give explicit Schur expansions for several families of symmetric functions. We begin by giving a combinatorial definition of the modified Macdonald polynomials and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by any diagram $δ\subset {\mathbb Z} \times {\mathbb Z}$, written as $\widetilde H_δ(X;q,t)$ and $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$, respectively. We then give an explicit Schur expansion of $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$ as a sum over a subset of the Yamanouchi words, as opposed to the expansion using the charge statistic given in 1978 by Lascoux and Schüztenberger. We further define the symmetric function $R_{γ,δ}(X)$ as a refinement of $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$ and similarly describe its Schur expansion. We then analyze $R_{γ,δ}(X)$ to determine the leading term of its Schur expansion. We also provide a conjecture towards the Schur expansion of $\widetilde H_δ(X;q,t)$. To gain these results, we use a construction from the 2007 work of Sami Assaf to associate each Macdonald polynomial with a signed colored graph $\mathcal{H}_δ$. In the case where a subgraph of $\mathcal{H}_δ$ is a dual equivalence graph, we provide the Schur expansion of its associated symmetric function, yielding several corollaries.
A Generalization of Tokuyama's Formula to the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials

A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.
Elementary proof that $\mathbb Z_p^4$ is a DCI-group

A finite group $R$ is a DCI-group if, whenever $S$ and $T$ are subsets of $R$ with the Cayley graphs ${\rm Cay}(R,S)$ and ${\rm Cay}(R,T)$ isomorphic, there exists an automorphism $\varphi$ of $R$ with $S^\varphi=T$.
Elementary abelian groups of order $p^4$ or smaller are known to be DCI-groups, while those of sufficiently large rank are known not to be DCI-groups. The only published proof that elementary abelian groups of order $p^4$ are DCI-groups uses Schur rings and does not work for $p=2$ (which has been separately proven using computers). This paper provides a simpler proof that works for all primes. Some of the results in this paper also apply to elementary abelian groups of higher rank, so may be useful for completing our determination of which elementary abelian groups are DCI-groups.

We begin by deriving an action of the 0-Hecke algebra on standard reverse composition tableaux and use it to discover 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the natural refinements of Schur functions known as quasisymmetric Schur functions. Furthermore, we classify combinatorially which of these 0-Hecke modules are indecomposable.
From here, we establish that the natural equivalence relation arising from our 0-Hecke action has equivalence classes that are isomorphic to subintervals of the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Focussing on the equivalence classes containing a canonical tableau we discover a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, and use the cardinality of these equivalence classes to establish new enumerative results on truncated shifted reverse tableau studied by Panova and Adin-King-Roichman.
Generalizing our 0-Hecke action to one on skew standard reverse composition tableaux, we derive 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the skew quasisymmetric Schur functions of Bessenrodt et al. This enables us to prove a restriction rule that reflects the coproduct formula for quasisymmetric Schur functions, which in turn yields a quasisymmetric branching rule analogous to the classical branching rule for Schur functions.

A Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule For Noncommutative Schur Functions

We prove a Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the noncommutative Schur functions introduced by Bessenrodt, Luoto and van Willigenburg. In other words, we give an explicit combinatorial formula for expanding the product of a noncommutative power sum symmetric function and a noncommutative Schur function in terms of noncommutative Schur functions. In direct analogy to the classical Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, the summands are computed using a noncommutative analogue of border strips, and have coefficients equal to 1 or -1 determined by the height of these border strips. The rule is proved by interpreting the noncommutative Pieri rules for noncommutative Schur functions in terms of box-adding operators on compositions.

In this paper we prove Schur's conjecture in $\mathbb R^d$, which states that any diameter graph $G$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$ on $n$ vertices may have at most $n$ cliques of size $d$. We obtain an analogous statement for diameter graphs with unit edge length on a sphere $S^d_r$ of radius $r>1/\sqrt 2$. The proof rests on the following statement, conjectured by F. Morić and J. Pach: given two unit regular simplices $Δ_1,Δ_2$ on $d$ vertices in $\mathbb R^d$, either they share $d-2$ vertices, or there are vertices $v_1\in Δ_1,v_2\in Δ_2$ such that $\|v_1-v_2\|>1$. The same holds for unit simplices on a $d$-dimensional sphere of radius greater than $1/\sqrt 2$.

By considering type B analogs of permutations and tableaux, we extend abstract dual equivalence to type B in two directions. In one direction, we define involutions on signed permutations and shifted tableaux that give a weak dual equivalence, thereby giving another proof of the Schur positivity of Schur Q- and P-functions. In another direction, we define an abstract shifted dual equivalence parallel to dual equivalence and prove that it can be used to establish Schur P-positivity of a function expressed as a sum of shifted fundamental quasisymmetric functions.
Law of Large Numbers for Infinite Random Matrices over a Finite Field

Asymptotic representation theory of general linear groups GL(n,q) over a finite field leads to studying probability measures ρon the group U of all infinite uni-uppertriangular matrices over F_q, with the condition that ρis invariant under conjugations by arbitrary infinite matrices. Such probability measures form an infinite-dimensional simplex, and the description of its extreme points (in other words, ergodic measures ρ) was conjectured by Kerov in connection with nonnegative specializations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.
Vershik and Kerov also conjectured the following Law of Large Numbers. Consider an n by n diagonal submatrix of the infinite random matrix drawn from an ergodic measure coming from the Kerov's conjectural classification. The sizes of Jordan blocks of the submatrix can be interpreted as a (random) partition of n, or, equivalently, as a (random) Young diagram λ(n) with n boxes. Then, as n goes to infinity, the rows and columns of λ(n) have almost sure limiting frequencies corresponding to parameters of this ergodic measure.
Our main result is the proof of this Law of Large Numbers. We achieve it by analyzing a new randomized Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) insertion algorithm which samples random Young diagrams λ(n) coming from ergodic measures. The probability weights of these Young diagrams are expressed in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our insertion algorithm is a modified and extended version of a recent construction by Borodin and the second author (arXiv:1305.5501). On the other hand, our randomized RSK insertion generalizes a version of the RSK insertion introduced by Vershik and Kerov (1986) in connection with asymptotic representation theory of symmetric groups (which is governed by nonnegative specializations of Schur symmetric functions).
Factorial P- and Q-Schur functions represent equivariant quantum Schubert classes

We find presentations by generators and relations for the equivariant quantum cohomology rings of the maximal isotropic Grassmannians of types B,C and D, and we find polynomial representatives for the Schubert classes in these rings. These representatives are given in terms of the same Pfaffian formulas which appear in the theory of factorial $P$- and $Q$-Schur functions. After specializing to equivariant cohomology, we interpret the resulting presentations and Pfaffian formulas in terms of Chern classes of tautological bundles.

The representation of the Bethe wave functions of certain integrable models via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The algebraic relations arising in the calculation of the scalar products and the correlation functions are based on the Binet-Cauchy formula for the Schur functions. We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the formula for the scalar products of the Bethe state-vectors in terms of nests of the self-avoiding lattice paths constituting the so-called watermelon configurations. The interpretation proposed is, in its turn, related to the enumeration of the boxed plane partitions.

The XX0 Heisenberg model on a cyclic chain is considered. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The determinantal expressions of the form-factors and of the thermal correlation functions are obtained. The q-binomial determinants enable the connection of the form-factors with the generating functions both of boxed plane partitions and of self-avoiding lattice paths. The asymptotical behavior of the thermal correlation functions is studied in the limit of low temperature provided that the characteristic parameters of the system are large enough.

Introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, the Schur process is known to be a determinantal point process, meaning that its correlation functions are minors of a single correlation kernel matrix. Previously, this was derived using determinantal expressions for the skew-Schur polynomials. In this paper we obtain this result in a different way, using the fact that the Schur polynomials are eigenfunctions of Macdonald difference operators.

We conjecture an evaluation of three-partition cyclic Hodge integrals in terms of loop Schur functions. Our formula implies the orbifold Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for toric Calabi-Yau threefolds with transverse type A singularities. We prove the formula in the case where one of the partitions is empty, and thus establish the orbifold Gromov- Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local toric surfaces with transverse type A singularities.

This article is devoted to the computation of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of two classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group: the class algebra and the double coset algebra. The connection coefficients of these two algebraic structures are of significant interest in the study of Schur and zonal polynomials as well as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Furthermore they play an important role in combinatorics as they give the number of factorizations of a permutation into a product of permutations with given cyclic properties. Usually studied separately, these two families of coefficients share strong similar properties. First (partially) introduced by Goulden and Jackson in 1996, Jack connection coefficients provide a natural unified approach closely related to the theory of Jack polynomials, a family of bases in the ring of symmetric functions indexed by a parameter αthat generalizes both Schur (case α= 1) and zonal polynomials (case α= 2). Jack connection coefficients are also directly linked to Jack characters, a general view of the characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that these coefficients are polynomials in αwith nice combinatorial properties, the so-called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper, we use the theory of Jack symmetric functions and the Laplace Beltrami operator to show the polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients in some important cases. We also provide explicit formulations including notably a generalization of a classical formula of Dénes for the number of minimal factorizations of a permutation into transpositions.

A subtraction-free definition of the big Witt vector construction was recently given by the first author. This allows one to define the big Witt vectors of any semiring. Here we give an explicit combinatorial description of the big Witt vectors of the Boolean semiring. We do the same for two variants of the big Witt vector construction: the Schur Witt vectors and the $p$-typical Witt vectors. We use this to give an explicit description of the Schur Witt vectors of the natural numbers, which can be viewed as the classification of totally positive power series with integral coefficients, first obtained by Davydov. We also determine the cardinalities of some Witt vector algebras with entries in various concrete arithmetic semirings.

A finite group G is called Schur, if every Schur ring over G is associated in a natural way with a regular subgroup of Sym(G) that is isomorphic to G. We prove that any nonabelian Schur group G is metabelian and the number of distinct prime divisors of the order of G does not exceed 7.

We extend the big and $p$-typical Witt vector functors from commutative rings to commutative semirings. In the case of the big Witt vectors, this is a repackaging of some standard facts about monomial and Schur positivity in the combinatorics of symmetric functions. In the $p$-typical case, it uses positivity with respect to an apparently new basis of the $p$-typical symmetric functions. We also give explicit descriptions of the big Witt vectors of the natural numbers and of the nonnegative reals, the second of which is a restatement of Edrei's theorem on totally positive power series. Finally we give some negative results on the relationship between truncated Witt vectors and $k$-Schur positivity, and we give ten open questions.
