Backward jeu de taquin slides for composition tableaux and a noncommutative Pieri rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a backward jeu de taquin slide analogue on semistandard reverse composition tableaux. These tableaux were first studied by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg when defining quasisymmetric Schur functions. Our algorithm for performing backward jeu de taquin slides on semistandard reverse composition tableaux results in a natural operator on compositions that we call the jdt operator. This operator in turn gives rise to a new poset structure on compositions whose maximal chains we enumerate. As an application, we also give a noncommutative Pieri rule for noncommutative Schur functions that uses the jdt operators.

Dual immaculate creation operators and a dendriform algebra structure on the quasisymmetric functions
Published in Canad. J. Math. 69(2017), 21-53 (published version is version 5 without ancillary file) • View PublicationBIB
The dual immaculate functions are a basis of the ring QSym of quasisymmetric functions, and form one of the most natural analogues of the Schur functions. The dual immaculate function corresponding to a composition is a weighted generating function for immaculate tableaux in the same way as a Schur function is for semistandard Young tableaux; an "immaculate tableau" is defined similarly to a semistandard Young tableau, but the shape is a composition rather than a partition, and only the first column is required to strictly increase (whereas the other columns can be arbitrary; but each row has to weakly increase). Dual immaculate functions have been introduced by Berg, Bergeron, Saliola, Serrano and Zabrocki in arXiv:1208.5191, and have since been found to possess numerous nontrivial properties. In this note, we prove a conjecture of Mike Zabrocki which provides an alternative construction for the dual immaculate functions in terms of certain "vertex operators". The proof uses a dendriform structure on the ring QSym; we discuss the relation of this structure to known dendriform structures on the combinatorial Hopf algebras FQSym and WQSym.
Extreme rays of the $(N, k)$-Schur Cone
We discuss several partial results towards proving Dennis White's conjecture on the extreme rays of the $(N,2)$-Schur cone. We are interested in which vectors are extreme in the cone generated by all products of Schur functions of partitions with $k$ or fewer parts. For the case where $k =2$, White conjectured that the extreme rays are obtained by excluding a certain family of "bad pairs," and proved a special case of the conjecture using Farkas' Lemma. We present an alternate proof of the special case, in addition to showing more infinite families of extreme rays and reducing White's conjecture to two simpler conjectures.

Non-Archimedean Whittaker functions as characters: a probabilistic approach to the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) • View PublicationBIB
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field (e.g $GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$ ), Jacquet's Whittaker function is essentially proportional to a character of an irreducible representation of the Langlands dual group $G^\vee( \mathbb{C} )$ ( a Schur function if $G = GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$). We propose a probabilistic approach to this claim, known as the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula, when the group $G$ has at least one minuscule cocharacter in the coweight lattice. Our presentation goes along the following lines. Thanks to a minuscule random walk $W^{(z)}$ on the coweight lattice and a related random walk on the Borel subgroup, we establish a Poisson kernel formula for the non-Archimedean Whittaker function. The expression and its ingredients are similar to the one previously obtained by the author in the Archimedean case. A simple manipulation reduces the problem to evaluating the probability of $W^{(z)}$ never exiting the Weyl chamber. Then, an implementation of the reflection principle forces the appearance of the Weyl character formula and therefore retrieves characters of $G^\vee\left( \mathbb{C} \right)$. The construction of the random walk on the Borel subgroup requires some care. It is extracted from a spherical random walk whose increments have a distribution that can be understood as elements from the spherical Hecke algebra.

Tokuyama-type formulas for type B
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 216(2) (2016), 617-655 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain explicit formulas for the product of a deformed Weyl denominator with the character of an irreducible representation of the spin group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$, which is an analogue of the formulas of Tokuyama for Schur polynomials and Hamel-King for characters of symplectic groups. To give these, we start with a symplectic group and obtain such characters using the Casselman-Shalika formula. We then analyze this using objects which are naturally attached to the metaplectic double cover of an odd orthogonal group, which also has dual group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$.

Cyclic Sieving and Plethysm Coefficients
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), 923-947 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial expression for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_λ$ in the expansion of the plethysm $p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ$ is given for all $d$ dividing $n$ for the cases in which $n=2$ or $λ$ is rectangular. In these cases, the coefficient $\langle p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ, s_λ \rangle$ is shown to count, up to sign, the number of fixed points of an $\langle s_μ^n, s_λ \rangle$-element set under the $d^{\text{th}}$ power of an order-$n$ cyclic action. If $n=2$, the action is the Schützenberger involution on semistandard Young tableaux (also known as evacuation), and, if $λ$ is rectangular, the action is a certain power of Schützenberger and Shimozono's jeu-de-taquin promotion. This work extends results of Stembridge and Rhoades linking fixed points of the Schützenberger actions to ribbon tableaux enumeration. The conclusion for the case $n=2$ is equivalent to the domino tableaux rule of Carré and Leclerc for discriminating between the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the square of a Schur function.

A lift of Schur's Q-functions to the peak algebra
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 135 (2015), 268--290 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a lift of Schur's Q-functions to the peak algebra of the symmetric group, called the noncommutative Schur Q-functions, and extract from them a new natural basis with several nice properties such as the positive right-Pieri rule, combinatorial expansion, etc. Dually, we get a basis of the Stembridge algebra of peak functions refining Schur's P-functions in a simple way.

A combinatorial proof of a plethystic Murnaghan--Nakayama rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article gives a combinatorial proof of a plethystic generalization of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. The main result expresses the product of a Schur function with the plethysm $p_r \circ h_n$ as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. The proof uses a sign-reversing involution on sequences of bead moves on James' abacus, inspired by the arguments in N. Loehr, Abacus proofs of Schur function identities, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 24 (2010), 1356-1370.

Schur Superpolynomials: Combinatorial Definition and Pieri Rule
Published in SIGMA 11 (2015), 021, 23 pages • View PublicationBIB
Schur superpolynomials have been introduced recently as limiting cases of the Macdonald superpolynomials. It turns out that there are two natural super-extensions of the Schur polynomials: in the limit $q=t=0$ and $q=t\rightarrow\infty$, corresponding respectively to the Schur superpolynomials and their dual. However, a direct definition is missing. Here, we present a conjectural combinatorial definition for both of them, each being formulated in terms of a distinct extension of semi-standard tableaux. These two formulations are linked by another conjectural result, the Pieri rule for the Schur superpolynomials. Indeed, and this is an interesting novelty of the super case, the successive insertions of rows governed by this Pieri rule do not generate the tableaux underlying the Schur superpolynomials combinatorial construction, but rather those pertaining to their dual versions. As an aside, we present various extensions of the Schur bilinear identity.

An iterated residue perspective on stable Grothendieck polynomials
Grothendieck polynomials are important objects in the study of the $K$-theory of flag varieties. Their many remarkable properties have been studied in the context of algebraic geometry and tableaux combinatorics. We explore a new tool, similar to generating sequences, which we call the iterated residue technique. We prove new formulas on the calculus of iterated residues and use them to prove straightening laws and multiplication formulas for stable Grothendieck polynomials. As a further application of our method, we give new proofs that the $K$-Pieri rule and the expansions of Grothendieck polynomials in the Schur basis both exhibit alternating signs. As a consequence, we observe that our method implies a new combinatorial statement of the $K$-Pieri rule. Our results indicate that the iterated residue technique should be further explored as a new line of attack on open conjectures regarding positivity and stability, for example of quiver polynomials and Thom polynomials, in $K$-theory.

Crystal approach to affine Schubert calculus
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) 2016 (8): 2239-2294 • View PublicationBIB
We apply crystal theory to affine Schubert calculus, Gromov-Witten invariants for the complete flag manifold, and the positroid stratification of the positive Grassmannian. We introduce operators on decompositions of elements in the type-$A$ affine Weyl group and produce a crystal reflecting the internal structure of the generalized Young modules whose Frobenius image is represented by stable Schubert polynomials. We apply the crystal framework to products of a Schur function with a $k$-Schur function, consequently proving that a subclass of 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of complete flag varieties for $\mathbb C^n$ enumerate the highest weight elements under these operators. Included in this class are the Schubert structure constants in the (quantum) product of a Schubert polynomial with a Schur function $s_λ$ for all $|λ^\vee|< n$. Another by-product gives a highest weight formulation for various fusion coefficients of the Verlinde algebra and for the Schubert decomposition of certain positroid classes.

Interlacing networks: birational RSK, the octahedron recurrence, and Schur function identities
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 133, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the problem of giving a bijective proof of the fact that the birational RSK correspondence satisfies the octahedron recurrence, we define interlacing networks, which are certain planar directed networks with a rigid structure of sources and sinks. We describe an involution that swaps paths in these networks and leads to Plücker-like three-term relations among path weights. We show that indeed these relations follow from the Plücker relations in the Grassmannian together with some simple rank properties of the matrices corresponding to our interlacing networks. The space of matrices obeying these rank properties forms the closure of a cell in the matroid stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Not only does the octahedron recurrence for RSK follow immediately from the three-term relations for interlacing networks, but also these relations imply some interesting identities of Schur functions reminiscent of those obtained by Fulmek and Kleber. These Schur function identities lead to some results on Schur positivity for expressions of the form $s_νs_ρ - s_λs_μ$.

The m/n Pieri rule
The Pieri rule is an important theorem which explains how the operators e_k of multiplication by elementary symmetric functions act in the basis of Schur functions s_lambda. In this paper, for any rational number m/n, we study the relationship between the rational version e_k^{m/n} of the operators (given by the elliptic Hall algebra) and the "rational" version s_lambda^{m/n} of the basis (given by the Maulik-Okounkov stable basis construction)

The role of residue and quotient tables in the theory of k-Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, residue and quotient tables were defined by Fishel and the author, and were used to describe strong covers in the lattice of $k$-bounded partitions. In this paper, we show or conjecture that residue and quotient tables can be used to describe many other results in the theory of $k$-bounded partitions and $k$-Schur functions, including $k$-conjugates, weak horizontal and vertical strips, and the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule. Evidence is presented for the claim that one of the most important open questions in the theory of $k$-Schur functions, a general rule that would describe their product, can be also concisely stated in terms of residue tables.
Perfect sampling algorithm for Schur processes
Published in Markov Processes Relat. Fields 24, 381-418 (2018) • Search Publication
We describe random generation algorithms for a large class of random combinatorial objects called Schur processes, which are sequences of random (integer) partitions subject to certain interlacing conditions. This class contains several fundamental combinatorial objects as special cases, such as plane partitions, tilings of Aztec diamonds, pyramid partitions and more generally steep domino tilings of the plane. Our algorithm, which is of polynomial complexity, is both exact (i.e. the output follows exactly the target probability law, which is either Boltzmann or uniform in our case), and entropy optimal (i.e. it reads a minimal number of random bits as an input). The algorithm encompasses previous growth procedures for special Schur processes related to the primal and dual RSK algorithm, as well as the famous domino shuffling algorithm for domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. It can be easily adapted to deal with symmetric Schur processes and general Schur processes involving infinitely many parameters. It is more concrete and easier to implement than Borodin's algorithm, and it is entropy optimal. At a technical level, it relies on unified bijective proofs of the different types of Cauchy and Littlewood identities for Schur functions, and on an adaptation of Fomin's growth diagram description of the RSK algorithm to that setting. Simulations performed with this algorithm suggest interesting limit shape phenomena for the corresponding tiling models, some of which are new.
From Aztec diamonds to pyramids: steep tilings
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 369 (2017), 5921-5959 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of domino tilings that includes tilings of the Aztec diamond and pyramid partitions as special cases. These tilings live in a strip of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ of the form $1 \leq x-y \leq 2\ell$ for some integer $\ell \geq 1$, and are parametrized by a binary word $w\in\{+,-\}^{2\ell}$ that encodes some periodicity conditions at infinity. Aztec diamond and pyramid partitions correspond respectively to $w=(+-)^\ell$ and to the limit case $w=+^\infty-^\infty$. For each word $w$ and for different types of boundary conditions, we obtain a nice product formula for the generating function of the associated tilings with respect to the number of flips, that admits a natural multivariate generalization. The main tools are a bijective correspondence with sequences of interlaced partitions and the vertex operator formalism (which we slightly extend in order to handle Littlewood-type identities). In probabilistic terms our tilings map to Schur processes of different types (standard, Pfaffian and periodic). We also introduce a more general model that interpolates between domino tilings and plane partitions.

A product formula for certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for Jack and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Jack polynomials generalize several classical families of symmetric polynomials, including Schur polynomials, and are further generalized by Macdonald polynomials. In 1989, Richard Stanley conjectured that if the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient for a triple of Schur polynomials is 1, then the corresponding coefficient for Jack polynomials can be expressed as a product of weighted hooks of the Young diagrams associated to the partitions indexing the coefficient. We prove a special case of this conjecture in which the partitions indexing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient have at most 3 parts. We also show that this result extends to Macdonald polynomials.

2D Toda τ-functions as combinatorial generating functions
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 105, 827-852 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
Two methods of constructing 2D Toda $τ$-functions that are generating functions for certain geometrical invariants of a combinatorial nature are related. The first involves generation of paths in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$ by multiplication of the conjugacy class sums $C_λ\in C[S_n]$ in the group algebra by elements of an abelian group of central elements. Extending the characteristic map to the tensor product $C[S_n]\otimes C[S_n]$ leads to double expansions in terms of power sum symmetric functions, in which the coefficients count the number of such paths. Applying the same map to sums over the orthogonal idempotents leads to diagonal double Schur function expansions that are identified as $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type. The second method is the standard construction of $τ$-functions as vacuum state matrix elements of products of vertex operators in a fermionic Fock space with elements of the abelian group of convolution symmetries. A homomorphism between these two group actions is derived and shown to be intertwined by the characteristic map composed with fermionization. Applications include Okounkov's generating function for double Hurwitz numbers, which count branched coverings of the Riemann sphere with nonminimal branching at two points, and various analogous combinatorial counting functions.

A combinatorial proof that Schubert vs. Schur coefficients are nonnegative
We give a combinatorial proof that the product of a Schubert polynomial by a Schur polynomial is a nonnegative sum of Schubert polynomials. Our proof uses Assaf's theory of dual equivalence to show that a quasisymmetric function of Bergeron and Sottile is Schur-positive. By a geometric comparison theorem of Buch and Mihalcea, this implies the nonnegativity of Gromov-Witten invariants of the Grassmannian.
