Poset models for Weyl group analogs of symmetric functions and Schur functions
The `Weyl symmetric functions' studied here naturally generalize classical symmetric (polynomial) functions, and `Weyl bialternants,' sometimes also called Weyl characters, analogize the Schur functions. For this generalization, the underlying symmetry group is a finite Weyl group. A `splitting poset' for a Weyl bialternant is an edge-colored ranked poset possessing a certain structural property and a natural weighting of its elements so that the weighted sum of poset elements is the given Weyl bialternant. Connected such posets are of combinatorial interest in part because they are rank symmetric and rank unimodal and have nice quotient-of-product expressions for their rank generating functions. Supporting graphs of weight bases for irreducible semisimple Lie algebra representations provide one large family of examples. However, many splitting posets can be obtained outside of this Lie theoretic context. This monograph provides a tutorial on Weyl bialternants / Weyl symmetric functions and splitting posets that is largely self-contained and independent of Lie algebra representation theory. New results are also obtained.

Atomic decomposition of characters and crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lascoux stated that the type A Kostka-Foulkes polynomials K_{lambda,mu}(t) expand positively in terms of so-called atomic polynomials. For any semisimple Lie algebra, the former polynomial is a t-analogue of the multiplicity of the dominant weight mu in the irreducible representation of highest weight lambda. We formulate the atomic decomposition in arbitrary type, and view it as a strengthening of the monotonicity of K_{lambda,mu}(t). We also define a combinatorial version of the atomic decomposition, as a decomposition of a modified crystal graph. We prove that this stronger version holds in type A (which provides a new, conceptual approach to Lascoux's statement), in types B, C, and D in a stable range for t=1, as well as in some other cases, while we conjecture that it holds more generally. Another conjecture stemming from our work leads to an efficient computation of K_{lambda,mu}(t). We also give a geometric interpretation.

Unified characterizations of minuscule Kac--Moody representations built from colored posets
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(2) (2020) #P2.42 • View PublicationBIB
R.M. Green described structural properties that ``doubly infinite'' colored posets should possess so that they can be used to construct representations of most affine Kac--Moody algebras. These representations are analogs of the minuscule representations of the semisimple Lie algebras, and his posets (``full heaps'') are analogs of the finite minuscule posets. Here only simply laced Kac--Moody algebras are considered. Working with their derived subalgebras, we provide a converse to Green's theorem. Smaller collections of colored structural properties are also shown to be necessary and sufficient for such poset-built representations to be produced for smaller subalgebras, especially the ``Borel derived'' subalgebra. These developments lead to the formulation of unified definitions of finite and infinite colored minuscule and $d$-complete posets. This paper launches a program that seeks to extend the notion of ``minuscule representation'' to Kac--Moody algebras, and to classify such representations.

On the crystal graph description of the stable Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series
Published in J. Number Theory 215 (2020), pp. 186-215 • View PublicationBIB
For a semisimple Lie algebra admitting a good enumeration, we prove a parametrization for the elements in its Weyl group. As an application, we give a coordinate-free comparison between the crystal graph description (when it is known) and the Lie-theoretic description of the Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in the stable range.

Combinatorial descriptions of the crystal structure on certain PBW bases
Published in Transform. Groups 23 (2018), no. 2, 501-525 • View PublicationBIB
Using the theory of PBW bases, one can realize the crystal $B(\infty)$ for any semisimple Lie algebra over $\mathbf{C}$ using Kostant partitions as the underlying set. In fact there are many such realizations, one for each reduced expression for the longest element of the Weyl group. There is an algorithm to calculate the actions of the crystal operators, but it can be quite complicated. Here we show that, for certain reduced expressions, the crystal operators can also be described by a much simpler bracketing rule. We give conditions describing these reduced expressions, and show that there is at least one example in every type except possibly $E_8$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. We then discuss some examples.

Filtrations on Springer fiber cohomology and Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.

Schubert slices in the combinatorial geometry of flag domains
Flag domains are open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag manifolds of their complexifications. Certain group theoretically defined compact complex submanifolds, which are regarded as cycles, are of basic importance for their complex geometric and representation theoretic properties. It is known that there are optimal Schubert varieties which intersect the cycles transversally in finitely many points and in particular determine them in homology. Here we give a precise description of these Schubert varieties in terms of certain subsets of the Weyl group and compute their total number for all the real forms of SL(n,C). Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the points of intersection in terms of flags and their number.

Standard parabolic subsets of highest weight modules
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 369 (2017), no. 4, 2363-2394 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study certain fundamental and distinguished subsets of weights of an arbitrary highest weight module over a complex semisimple Lie algebra. These sets ${\rm wt}_J \mathbb{V}^λ$ are defined for each highest weight module $\mathbb{V}^λ$ and each subset $J$ of simple roots; we term them "standard parabolic subsets of weights". It is shown that for any highest weight module, the sets of simple roots whose corresponding standard parabolic subsets of weights are equal form intervals in the poset of subsets of the set of simple roots under containment. Moreover, we provide closed-form expressions for the maximum and minimum elements of the aforementioned intervals for all highest weight modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$ over semisimple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$. Surprisingly, these formulas only require the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the integrability data of $\mathbb{V}^λ$. As a consequence, we extend classical work by Satake, Borel-Tits, Vinberg, and Casselman, as well as recent variants by Cellini-Marietti to all highest weight modules. We further compute the dimension, stabilizer, and vertex set of standard parabolic faces of highest weight modules, and show that they are completely determined by the aforementioned closed-form expressions. We also compute the $f$-polynomial and a minimal half-space representation of the convex hull of the set of weights. These results were recently shown for the adjoint representation of a simple Lie algebra, but analogues remain unknown for any other finite- or infinite-dimensional highest weight module. Our analysis is uniform and type-free, across all semisimple Lie algebras and for arbitrary highest weight modules.

Faces and maximizer subsets of highest weight modules
Published in Journal of Algebra 455 (2016), 32-76 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study general highest weight modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$ over a complex finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We present three formulas for the set of weights of a large family of modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$, which include but are not restricted to all simple modules and all parabolic Verma modules. These formulas are direct and do not involve cancellations, and were not previously known in the literature. Our results extend the notion of the Weyl polytope to general highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$. We also show that for all simple modules, the convex hull of the weights is a $W_J$-invariant polyhedron for some parabolic subgroup $W_J$. We compute its vertices, faces, and symmetries - more generally, we also do this for all parabolic Verma modules, and for all modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$ with highest weight $λ$ not on a simple root hyperplane. To show our results, we extend the notion of convexity to arbitrary additive subgroups $\mathbb{A} \subset (\mathbb{R},+)$ of coefficients. Our techniques enable us to completely classify "weak $\mathbb{A}$-faces" of the support sets ${\rm wt}(\mathbb{V}^λ)$, in the process extending classical results of Satake, Borel-Tits, Vinberg, and Casselman, as well as modern variants by Chari-Dolbin-Ridenour and Cellini-Marietti, to general highest weight modules.

A generalization of the alcove model and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
The alcove model of the first author and A. Postnikov uniformly describes highest weight crystals of semisimple Lie algebras. We construct a generalization, called the quantum alcove model. In joint work of the first author with S. Naito, D. Sagaki, A. Schilling, and M. Shimozono, this was shown to uniformly describe tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals in all untwisted affine types; moreover, an efficient formula for the corresponding energy function is available. In the second part of this paper, we specialize the quantum alcove model to types $A$ and $C$. We give explicit affine crystal isomorphisms from the specialized quantum alcove model to the corresponding tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals, which are realized in terms of Kashiwara-Nakashima columns.

Electrical networks and Lie theory
Published in Algebra Number Theory 9 (2015) 1401-1418 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new class of "electrical" Lie groups. These Lie groups, or more precisely their nonnegative parts, act on the space of planar electrical networks via combinatorial operations previously studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow. The corresponding electrical Lie algebras are obtained by deforming the Serre relations of a semisimple Lie algebra in a way suggested by the star-triangle transformation of electrical networks. Rather surprisingly, we show that the type A electrical Lie group is isomorphic to the symplectic group. The nonnegative part (EL_{2n})_{\geq 0} of the electrical Lie group is a rather precise analogue of the totally nonnegative subsemigroup (U_{n})_{\geq 0} of the unipotent subgroup of SL_{n}. We establish decomposition and parametrization results for (EL_{2n})_{\geq 0}, paralleling Lusztig's work in total nonnegativity, and work of Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and de Verdière-Gitler-Vertigan for networks. Finally, we suggest a generalization of electrical Lie algebras to all Dynkin types.

The cone of Hilbert nullforms
Published in Proc. Steklov Math. Inst. 241 (2003), 192--209 • Search Publication
We describe a geometric-combinatorial algorithm that allows one, using solely the system of weights and roots, to determine the Hesselink strata of the null-cone of a linear representation of a reductive algebraic group and calculate their dimensions. In particular, it provides a constructive approach to calculating the dimension of the null-cone and determining all its irreducible components of maximal dimension. In the case of the adjoint representation (and, more generally, a $θ$-representation), the algorithm turns into the classification algorithm for the conjugacy classes of nilpotent elements in a semisimple Lie algebra (respectively, homogeneous nilpotent elements in a cyclically graded semisimple Lie algebra).

Faces of weight polytopes and a generalization of a theorem of Vinberg
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory 15 (2012), no. 3, 593-611 • View PublicationBIB
The paper is motivated by the study of graded representations of Takiff algebras, cominuscule parabolics, and their generalizations. We study certain special subsets of the set of weights (and of their convex hull) of the generalized Verma modules (or GVM's) of a semisimple Lie algebra $\lie g$. In particular, we extend a result of Vinberg and classify the faces of the convex hull of the weights of a GVM. When the GVM is finite-dimensional, we ask a natural question that arises out of Vinberg's result: when are two faces the same? We also extend the notion of interiors and faces to an arbitrary subfield $\F$ of the real numbers, and introduce the idea of a weak $\F$-face of any subset of Euclidean space. We classify the weak $\F$-faces of all lattice polytopes, as well as of the set of lattice points in them. We show that a weak $\F$-face of the weights of a finite-dimensional $\lie g$-module is precisely the set of weights lying on a face of the convex hull.

Chopped and sliced cones and representations of Kac-Moody algebras
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 214 (2010), 1152-1164 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a chopped and sliced cone in combinatorial geometry and prove two structure theorems for the number of integral points in the individual slices of such a cone. We observe that this notion applies to weight multiplicities of Kac-Moody algebras and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients of semisimple Lie algebras, where we obtain the corresponding results.

The numbers game and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain "amplitudes" assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. Combinatorial reasoning is used to show that those connected graphs with negative integer amplitudes for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. This strengthens a result originally due to the second author. A more general result is obtained when certain real number amplitudes are allowed. The resulting graphs are in families, each family corresponding to a finite irreducible Coxeter group. These results are used to demonstrate that the only generalized Cartan matrices for which there exist finite edge-colored ranked posets enjoying a certain structure property are the Cartan matrices for the finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras. In this setting, classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac--Moody algebras and of the finite Coxeter and Weyl groups are re-derived.

Combinatorial Constructions of Weight Bases: The Gelfand-Tsetlin Basis
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work is part of a project on weight bases for the irreducible representations of semisimple Lie algebras with respect to which the representation matrices of the Chevalley generators are given by explicit formulas. In the case of sl_n, the celebrated Gelfand-Tsetlin basis is the only such basis known. Using the setup of supporting graphs developed by Donnelly, we present a simple combinatorial proof of the Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas based on a rational function identity. Some properties of the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis are derived via an algorithm for solving certain equations on the lattice of semistandard Young tableaux.
Distributive lattices defined for representations of rank two semisimple Lie algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a rank two root system and a pair of nonnegative integers, using only elementary combinatorics we construct two posets. The constructions are uniform across the root systems A1+A1, A2, C2, and G2. Examples appear in Figures 3.2 and 3.3. We then form the distributive lattices of order ideals of these posets. Corollary 5.4 gives elegant quotient-of-products expressions for the rank generating functions of these lattices (thereby providing answers to a 1979 question of Stanley). Also, Theorem 5.3 describes how these lattices provide a new combinatorial setting for the Weyl characters of representations of rank two semisimple Lie algebras. Most of these lattices are new; the rest of them (or related structures) have arisen in work of Stanley, Kashiwara, Nakashima, Littelmann, and Molev. In a future paper, one author shows that the posets constructed here form a Dynkin diagram-indexed answer to a combinatorially posed classification question. In a companion paper, some of these lattices are used to explicitly construct some representations of rank two semisimple Lie algebras. This implies that these lattices are strongly Sperner.

BGP-reflection functors and cluster combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define Bernstein-Gelfand-Ponomarev reflection functors in the cluster categories of hereditary algebras. They are triangle equivalences which provide a natural quiver realization of the "truncated simple reflections" on the set of almost positive roots $Φ_{\ge -1}$ associated to a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra. Combining with the tilting theory in cluster categories developed in [4], we give a unified interpretation via quiver representations for the generalized associahedra associated to the root systems of all Dynkin types (a simply-laced or non-simply-laced). This confirms the conjecture 9.1 in [4] in all Dynkin types.

On the Combinatorics of Crystal Graphs, I. Lusztig's Involution
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).

On the Computation of Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients and the Dilation Effect
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the problem of computing tensor product multiplicities for complex semisimple Lie algebras. Even though computing these numbers is #P-hard in general, we show that if the rank of the Lie algebra is assumed fixed, then there is a polynomial time algorithm, based on counting the lattice points in polytopes. In fact, for Lie algebras of type A_r, there is an algorithm, based on the ellipsoid algorithm, to decide when the coefficients are nonzero in polynomial time for arbitrary rank. Our experiments show that the lattice point algorithm is superior in practice to the standard techniques for computing multiplicities when the weights have large entries but small rank. Using an implementation of this algorithm, we provide experimental evidence for conjectured generalizations of the saturation property of Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. One of these conjectures seems to be valid for types B_n, C_n, and D_n.
