Jack characters and enumeration of maps
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 78B.5 (2017), 12 pp • Search Publication
Jack characters provide dual information about Jack symmetric functions. We give explicit formulas for the top-degree part of these Jack characters in terms of bicolored oriented maps with an arbitrary face structure.

Bijection between oriented maps and weighted non-oriented maps
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24(3) (2017), #P3.7 • View PublicationBIB
We consider bicolored maps, i.e. graphs which are drawn on surfaces, and construct a bijection between (i) oriented maps with arbitary face structure, and (ii) (weighted) non-oriented maps with exactly one face. Above, each non-oriented map is counted with a multiplicity which is based on the concept of the orientability generating series and the measure of orientability of a map. This bijection has the remarkable property of preserving the underlying bicolored graph. Our bijection shows equivalence between two explicit formulas for the top-degree of Jack characters, i.e. (suitably normalized) coefficients in the expansion of Jack symmetric functions in the basis of power-sum symmetric functions.
Jacobi-Trudi determinants over finite fields

In this paper, we work toward answering the following question: given a uniformly random algebra homomorphism from the ring of symmetric functions over the integers to a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, what is the probability that the Schur function $s_λ$ maps to zero? We show that this probability is always at least $1/q$ and is asymptotically $1/q$. Moreover, we give a complete classification of all shapes that can achieve probability $1/q$. In addition, we identify certain families of shapes where the corresponding Schur functions being sent to zero are independent events, and we look into the probability that a Schur functions is mapped to nonzero values in $\mathbb{F}_q$.

Eulerian polynomials and descent statistics
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 90: 86-144, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving noncommutative symmetric functions, Brändén's modified Foata-Strehl action, and a group action of Petersen on signed permutations. Notably, the modified Foata-Strehl action yields an analogous relation between Narayana polynomials and the joint distribution of the peak number and descent number over 231-avoiding permutations, which we also interpret in terms of binary trees and Dyck paths.
Generating functions and statistics on spaces of maximal tori in classical Lie groups
Published in New York J. Math. 23 (2017) 165-191 • Search Publication
In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.

Reconstructing Partitions from their Multisets of $k$-Minors
For non-negative integers $n$ and $k$ with $n \ge k$, a {\em $k$-minor} of a partition $λ= [λ_1, λ_2, \dots]$ of $n$ is a partition $μ= [μ_1, μ_2, \dots]$ of $n-k$ such that $μ_i \le λ_i$ for all $i$. The multiset $\widehat{M}_k(λ)$ of $k$-minors of $λ$ is defined as the multiset of $k$-minors $μ$ with multiplicity of $μ$ equal to the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/ μ$. We show that there exists a function $G(n)$ such that the partitions of $n$ can be reconstructed from their multisets of $k$-minors if and only if $k \le G(n)$. Furthermore, we prove that $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} G(n)/n = 1$ with $n-G(n) = O(n/\log n)$. As a direct consequence of this result, the irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ can be reconstructed from their restrictions to $S_{n-k}$ if and only if $k \le G(n)$ for the same function $G(n)$. For a minor $μ$ of the partition $λ$, we study the excitation factor $E_μ(λ)$, which appears as a crucial part in Naruse's Skew-Shape Hook Length Formula. We observe that certain excitation factors of $λ$ can be expressed as a $\mathbb{Q}[k]$-linear combination of the elementary symmetric polynomials of the hook lengths in the first row of $λ$ where $k = λ_1$ is the number of cells in the first row of $λ$.
Khovanov's Heisenberg category, moments in free probability, and shifted symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish an isomorphism between the center of the Heisenberg category defined by Khovanov and the algebra $Λ^*$ of shifted symmetric functions defined by Okounkov-Olshanski. We give a graphical description of the shifted power and Schur bases of $Λ^*$ as elements of the center, and describe the curl generators of the center in the language of shifted symmetric functions. This latter description makes use of the transition and co-transition measures of Kerov and the noncommutative probability spaces of Biane.

Order Quasisymmetric Functions Distinguish Rooted Trees

Richard P. Stanley conjectured that finite trees can be distinguished by their chromatic symmetric functions. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement for posets: Finite rooted trees can be distinguished by their order quasisymmetric functions.

Generating functions for symmetric and shifted symmetric functions
Published in J. Combin. 10, (2019), no. 1, 111-127 • View PublicationBIB
We describe generating functions for several important families of classical symmetric functions and shifted Schur functions. The approach is originated from vertex operator realization of symmetric functions and offers a unified method to treat various families of symmetric functions and their shifted analogues.

Tutte Polynomials for Directed Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Tutte polynomial is a fundamental invariant of graphs. In this article, we define and study a generalization of the Tutte polynomial for directed graphs, that we name B-polynomial. The B-polynomial has three variables, but when specialized to the case of graphs (that is, digraphs where arcs come in pairs with opposite directions), one of the variables becomes redundant and the B-polynomial is equivalent to the Tutte polynomial. We explore various properties, expansions, specializations, and generalizations of the B-polynomial, and try to answer the following questions: 1. what properties of the digraph can be detected from its B-polynomial (acyclicity, length of paths, number of strongly connected components, etc.)? 2. which of the marvelous properties of the Tutte polynomial carry over to the directed graph setting? The B-polynomial generalizes the strict chromatic polynomial of mixed graphs introduced by Beck, Bogart and Pham. We also consider a quasisymmetric function version of the B-polynomial which simultaneously generalizes the Tutte symmetric function of Stanley and the quasisymmetric chromatic function of Shareshian and Wachs.

The Delta Conjecture at $q=1$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use a weight-preserving, sign-reversing involution to find a combinatorial expansion of $Δ_{e_k} e_n$ at $q=1$ in terms of the elementary symmetric function basis. We then use a weight-preserving bijection to prove the Delta Conjecture at $q=1$. The method of proof provides a variety of structures which can compute the inner product of $Δ_{e_k} e_n|_{q=1}$ with any symmetric function.

Subalgebras of Solomon's descent algebra based on alternating runs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 158(2018), 36-65 • View PublicationBIB
The number of alternating runs is a natural permutation statistic. We show it can be used to define some commutative subalgebras of the symmetric group algebra, and more precisely of the descent algebra. The Eulerian peak algebras naturally appear as subalgebras of our run algebras. We also calculate the orthogonal idempotents for run algebras in terms of noncommutative symmetric functions.

Central elements in U(gl(n)), shifted symmetric functions and the superalgebraic Capelli's method of virtual variables
In this work, we propose a new method for a unified study of some of the main features of the theory of the center of the enveloping algebra U(gl(n)) and of the algebra of shifted symmetric polynomials, that allows the whole theory to be developed, in a transparent and concise way, from the representation-theoretic point of view, that is entirely in the center of U(gl(n)). Our methodological innovation is the systematic use of the superalgebraic method of virtual variables for gl(n), which is, in turn, an extension of Capelli's method of "variabili ausiliarie".

Shifted symmetric functions and multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams
Published in Journal of Algebra, 483, pp. 262-305, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study shifted Schur functions $S_μ^\star$, as well as a new family of shifted symmetric functions $\mathfrak{K}_μ$ linked to Kostka numbers. We prove that both are polynomials in multi-rectangular coordinates, with nonnegative coefficients when written in terms of falling factorials. We then propose a conjectural generalization to the Jack setting. This conjecture is a lifting of Knop and Sahi's positivity result for usual Jack polynomials and resembles recent conjectures of Lassalle. We prove our conjecture for one-part partitions.

Combinatorial properties of symmetric polynomials from integrable vertex models in finite lattice
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 58, 091703 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study several combinatorial properties of a class of symmetric polynomials from the point of view of integrable vertex models in finite lattice. We introduce the $L$-operator related with the $U_q(sl_2)$ $R$-matrix, and construct the wavefunctions and their duals. We prove the exact correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials which is a quantum group deformation of the Grothendieck polynomials. This is proved by combining the matrix product method and an analysis on the domain wall boundary partition functions. As applications of the correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials, we derive several properties of the symmetric polynomials such as the determinant pairing formulas and the branching formulas by analyzing the domain wall boundary partition functions and the matrix elements of the $B$-operators.

Identities involving (doubly) symmetric polynomials and integrals over Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain identities involving symmetric and doubly symmetric polynomials. These identities provide a way of handling expressions appearing in the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne formula for Grassmannians. As corollaries, we obtain formulas for integrals over Grassmannians of characteristic classes of the tautological bundles. Moreover, we provide a valid proof of the Martin formula for the classical Grassmannian.

Contents of partitions and the combinatorics of permutation factorizations in genus 0

The central object of study is a formal power series that we call the content series, a symmetric function involving an arbitrary underlying formal power series $f$ in the contents of the cells in a partition. In previous work we have shown that the content series satisfies the KP equations. The main result of this paper is a new partial differential equation for which the content series is the unique solution, subject to a simple initial condition. This equation is expressed in terms of families of operators that we call $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ operators, whose action on the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ can be simply expressed in terms of powers of the contents of the cells in $λ$. Among our results, we construct the ${\mathcal{U}}$ and ${\mathcal{D}}$ operators explicitly as partial differential operators in the underlying power sum symmetric functions. We also give a combinatorial interpretation for the content series in terms of the Jucys-Murphy elements in the group algebra of the symmetric group. This leads to an interpretation for the content series as a generating series for branched covers of the sphere by a Riemann surface of arbitrary genus $g$. As particular cases, by suitable choice of the underlying series $f$, the content series specializes to the generating series for three known classes of branched covers: Hurwitz numbers, monotone Hurwitz numbers, and $m$-hypermap numbers. We apply our pde to give new proofs of the explicit formulas for these three classes of number in genus $0$. In the case of the $m$-hypermap numbers of Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer, this is the first algebraic proof of this result.

On the cluster nature and quantization of geometric $R$-matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define cluster $R$-matrices as sequences of mutations in triangular grid quivers on a cylinder, and show that the affine geometric $R$-matrix of symmetric power representations for the quantum affine algebra $U_q^\prime(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$ can be obtained from our cluster $R$-matrix. A quantization of the affine geometric $R$-matrix is defined, compatible with the cluster structure. We construct invariants of the quantum affine geometric $R$-matrix as quantum loop symmetric functions.

Partial sum of matrix entries of representations of the symmetric group and its asymptotics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many aspects of the asymptotics of Plancherel distributed partitions have been studied in the past fifty years, in particular the limit shape, the distribution of the longest rows, connections with random matrix theory and characters of the representation matrices of the symmetric group. Regarding the latter, we expand a celebrated result of Kerov on the asymptotic of Plancherel distributed characters by studying partial trace and partial sum of a representation matrix. We decompose these objects into a main term and a reminder, proving a central limit theorem for both main terms and a law of large numbers for the partial sum itself. Our main tool is the expansion of symmetric functions evaluated on Jucys-Murphy elements.

Admissible subsets and Littelmann paths in affine Kazhdan-Lusztig theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The center of an extended affine Hecke algebra is known to be isomorphic to the ring of symmetric functions associated to the underlying finite Weyl group $W\_0$. The set of Weyl characters ${\sf s}\_\la$ forms a basis of the center and Lusztig showed in [Lus15] that these characters act as translations on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element $C\_{w\_0}$ where $w\_0$ is the longest element of $W\_0$, that is we have $C\_{w\_0}{\sf s}\_\la =C\_{w\_0t\_\la}$. As a consequence, the coefficients that appear when decomposing~$C\_{w\_0t\_{\la}}{\sf s}\_τ$ in the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis are tensor multiplicities of the Lie algebra with Weyl group $W\_0$. The aim of this paper is to explain how admissible subsets and Littelmann paths, which are models to compute such multiplicities, naturally appear when working out this decomposition.
