We consider the problem of finding sum of squares (sos) expressions to establish the non-negativity of a symmetric polynomial over a discrete hypercube whose coordinates are indexed by the $k$-element subsets of $[n]$. For simplicity, we focus on the case $k=2$, but our results extend naturally to all values of $k \geq 2$. We develop a variant of the Gatermann-Parrilo symmetry-reduction method tailored to our setting that allows for several simplifications and a connection to flag algebras.
We show that every symmetric polynomial that has a sos expression of a fixed degree also has a succinct sos expression whose size depends only on the degree and not on the number of variables. Our method bypasses much of the technical difficulties needed to apply the Gatermann-Parrilo method, and offers flexibility in obtaining succinct sos expressions that are combinatorially meaningful. As a byproduct of our results, we arrive at a natural representation-theoretic justification for the concept of flags as introduced by Razborov in his flag algebra calculus. Furthermore, this connection exposes a family of non-negative polynomials that cannot be certified with any fixed set of flags, answering a question of Razborov in the context of our finite setting.

Quasimodular forms were first studied in the context of counting torus coverings. Here we show that a weighted version of these coverings with Siegel-Veech weights also provides quasimodular forms. We apply this to prove conjectures of Eskin and Zorich on the large genus limits of Masur-Veech volumes and of Siegel-Veech constants.
In Part I we connect the geometric definition of Siegel-Veech constants both with a combinatorial counting problem and with intersection numbers on Hurwitz spaces. We introduce modified Siegel-Veech weights whose generating functions will later be shown to be quasimodular.
Parts II and III are devoted to the study of the quasimodularity of the generating functions arising from weighted counting of torus coverings. The starting point is the theorem of Bloch and Okounkov saying that q-brackets of shifted symmetric functions are quasimodular forms. In Part II we give an expression for their growth polynomials in terms of Gaussian integrals and use this to obtain a closed formula for the generating series of cumulants that is the basis for studying large genus asymptotics. In Part III we show that the even hook-length moments of partitions are shifted symmetric polynomials and prove a formula for the q-bracket of the product of such a hook-length moment with an arbitrary shifted symmetric polynomial. This formula proves quasimodularity also for the (-2)-nd hook-length moments by extrapolation, and implies the quasimodularity of the Siegel-Veech weighted counting functions.
Finally, in Part IV these results are used to give explicit generating functions for the volumes and Siegel-Veech constants in the case of the principal stratum of abelian differentials. To apply these exact formulas to the Eskin-Zorich conjectures we provide a general framework for computing the asymptotics of rapidly divergent power series.

In this paper we describe the thickened strips and the outside nested decompositions of any skew shape $λ/μ$. For any such decomposition $Φ=(Θ_1,Θ_2,\ldots,Θ_g)$ of the skew shape $λ/μ$ where $Θ_i$ is a thickened strip for every $i$, if $r$ is the number of boxes that are contained in any two distinct thickened strips of $Φ$, we establish a determinantal formula of the function $s_{λ/μ}(X)p_{1^r}(X)$ with the Schur functions of thickened strips as entries, where $s_{λ/μ}(X)$ is the Schur function of the skew shape $λ/μ$ and $p_{1^r}(X)$ is the power sum symmetric function index by the partition $(1^r)$. This generalizes Hamel and Goulden's theorem on the outside decompositions of the skew shape $λ/μ$. As an application of our theorem, we derive the number of $m$-strip tableaux which was first counted by Baryshnikov and Romik via extending the transfer operator approach due to Elkies.

In recent work, Elias and Hogancamp develop a recurrence for the Poincaré series of the triply graded Hochschild homology of certain links, one of which is the $(n,n)$ torus link. In this case, Elias and Hogancamp give a combinatorial formula for this homology that is reminiscent of the combinatorics of the modified Macdonald polynomial eigenoperator $\nabla$. We give a combinatorial formula for the homologies of all links considered by Elias and Hogancamp. Our first formula is not easily computable, so we show how to transform it into a computable version. Finally, we conjecture a direct relationship between the $(n,n)$ torus link case of our formula and the symmetric function $\nabla p_{1^n}$.

Hazewinkel proved the Ditters conjecture that the algebra of quasisymmetric functions over the integers is free commutative by constructing a nice polynomial basis. In this paper we prove a structure theorem for the algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions (PQSym) over the integers. It provides a polynomial basis of PQSym over the rational field, different from Hsiao's basis, and implies the freeness of PQSym over its subring of symmetric functions spanned by Schur's Q-functions.

We introduce a new family of symmetric multivariate polynomials, whose coefficients are meromorphic functions of two parameters $(q,t)$ and polynomial in a further two parameters $(u,v)$. We evaluate these polynomials explicitly as a matrix product. At $u=v=0$ they reduce to Macdonald polynomials, while at $q=0$, $u=v=s$ they recover a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions originally introduced by Borodin.

We introduce a basis of the symmetric functions that evaluates to the (irreducible) characters of the symmetric group, just as the Schur functions evaluate to the irreducible characters of $GL_n$ modules. Our main result gives three different characterizations for this basis. One of the characterizations shows that the structure coefficients for the (outer) product of these functions are the stable Kronecker coefficients. The results in this paper focus on developing the fundamental properties of this basis.

S. Ekhad and D. Zeilberger recently proved that the multivariate generating function for the number of simple singular vector tuples of a generic $m_1 \times \cdots \times m_d$ tensor has an elegant rational form involving elementary symmetric functions, and provided a partial conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of the cubical case $m_1 = \cdots = m_d$. We prove this conjecture and further identify completely the dominant asymptotic term, including the multiplicative constant. Finally, we use the method of differential approximants to conjecture that the subdominant connective constant effect observed by Ekhad and Zeilberger for a particular case in fact occurs more generally.

We introduce two families of symmetric functions with an extra parameter t that specialize to Schubert representatives for cohomology and homology of the affine Grassmannian when t = 1. The families are defined by a statistic on combinatorial objects associated to the type-A affine Weyl group and their transition matrix with Hall-Littlewood polynomials is t-positive. We conjecture that one family is the set of k-atoms.

We consider a homogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. At least in the case of the step initial condition, our formulas degenerate in appropriate limits to many known formulas of such type for integrable probabilistic systems in the (1+1)d KPZ universality class, including the stochastic six vertex model, ASEP, various q-TASEPs, and associated zero range processes.
Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions (introduced in arXiv:1410.0976) that can be defined as partition functions of the higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains; they generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model.
These are lecture notes for a course given by A.B. at the Ecole de Physique des Houches in July of 2015. All the results and proofs presented here generalize to the setting of the fully inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model, see arXiv:1601.05770 for a detailed exposition of the inhomogeneous case.

The non-commutative five-term relation $T_{1,0} T_{0,1} = T_{0,1} T_{1,1} T_{1,0}$ is shown to hold for certain operators acting on symmetric functions. The "generalized recursion" conjecture of Bergeron and Haiman is a corollary of this result.
Some aspects of (r,k)-parking functions

An \emph{$(r,k)$-parking function} of length $n$ may be defined as a sequence $(a_1,\dots,a_n)$ of positive integers whose increasing rearrangement $b_1\leq\cdots\leq b_n$ satisfies $b_i\leq k+(i-1)r$. The case $r=k=1$ corresponds to ordinary parking functions. We develop numerous properties of $(r,k)$-parking functions. In particular, if $F_n^{(r,k)}$ denotes the Frobenius characteristic of the action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the set of all $(r,k)$-parking functions of length $n$, then we find a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the power series $\left( \sum_{n\geq 0}F_n^{(r,1)}t^n\right)^k$ for any $k\in \mathbb{Z}$. When $k>0$, this power series is just $\sum_{n\geq 0} F_n^{(r,k)} t^n$; when $k<0$, we obtain a dual to $(r,k)$-parking functions. We also give a $q$-analogue of this result. For fixed $r$, we can use the symmetric functions $F_n^{(r,1)}$ to define a multiplicative basis for the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. We investigate some of the properties of this basis.
Counting faces of graphical zonotopes
It is a classical fact that the number of vertices of the graphical zonotope $Z_Γ$ is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of a graph $Γ$. We show that the $f$-polynomial of $Z_Γ$ is obtained as the principal specialization of the $q$-analog of the chromatic symmetric function of $Γ$.

In this note we classify when a skew Schur function is a positive linear combination of power sum symmetric functions. We then use this to determine precisely when any scalar multiple of a skew Schur function is the chromatic symmetric function of some graph. From here we are able to prove that of the classical bases for symmetric functions only certain scalar multiples of the elementary symmetric functions can be realised as the chromatic symmetric function of some graph, namely a particular union of complete graphs.
Top degree part in $b$-conjecture for unicellular bipartite maps

Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; 1, 1+β)$ with an additional parameter $β$ that may be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the rooted bipartite maps generating series. Indeed, it has the property that for $β\in \{0,1\}$, it specializes to the rooted, orientable (general, i.e. orientable or not, respectively) bipartite maps generating series. They made the following conjecture: coefficients of $ψ$ are polynomials in $β$ with positive integer coefficients that can be written as a multivariate generating series of rooted, general bipartite maps, where the exponent of $β$ is an integer-valued statistic that in some sense "measures the non-orientability" of the corresponding bipartite map.
We show that except for two special values of $β= 0,1$ for which the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of $ψ$ is known, there exists a third special value $β= -1$ for which the coefficients of $ψ$ indexed by two partitions $μ,ν$, and one partition with only one part are given by rooted, orientable bipartite maps with arbitrary face degrees and black/white vertex degrees given by $μ$/$ν$, respectively. We show that this evaluation corresponds, up to a sign, to a top-degree part of the coefficients of $ψ$. As a consequence, we introduce a collection of integer-valued statistics of maps $(η)$ such that the top-degree of the multivariate generating series of rooted bipartite maps with only one face (called unicellular) with respect to $η$ gives the top-degree of the appropriate coefficients of $ψ$. Finally, we show that the $b$-conjecture holds true for all rooted, unicellular bipartite maps of genus at most $2$.
Generalized Whitney formulas for broken circuits in ambigraphs and matroids
We explore several generalizations of Whitney's theorem -- a classical formula for the chromatic polynomial of a graph. Following Stanley, we replace the chromatic polynomial by the chromatic symmetric function. Following Dohmen and Trinks, we exclude not all but only an (arbitrarily selected) set of broken circuits, or even weigh these broken circuits with weight monomials instead of excluding them. Following Crew and Spirkl, we put weights on the vertices of the graph. Following Gebhard and Sagan, we lift the chromatic symmetric function to noncommuting variables. In addition, we replace the graph by an "ambigraph", an apparently new concept that includes both hypergraphs and multigraphs as particular cases.
We show that Whitney's formula endures all these generalizations, and a fairly simple sign-reversing involution can be used to prove it in each setting. Furthermore, if we restrict ourselves to the chromatic polynomial, then the graph can be replaced by a matroid.
We discuss an application to transitive digraphs (i.e., posets), and reprove an alternating-sum identity by Dahlberg and van Willigenburg.
Schubert polynomials, slide polynomials, Stanley symmetric functions and quasi-Yamanouchi pipe dreams

We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.

We establish, for the character table of the symmetric group, the positivity of the row sums indexed by irreducible characters, when restricted to various subsets of the conjugacy classes. A notable example is that of partitions with all parts odd. More generally, we study representations related to the conjugacy action of the symmetric group. These arise as sums of submodules induced from centraliser subgroups, and their Frobenius characteristics have elegant descriptions, often as a multiplicity-free sum of power-sum symmetric functions. We describe a general framework in which such representations, and consequently such linear combinations of power-sums, can be analysed. The conjugacy action for the symmetric group, and more generally for a large class of groups, is known to contain every irreducible. We find other representations of dimension $n!$ with this property, including a twisted analogue of the conjugacy action.
Structure coefficients for Jack characters: approximate factorization property
Jack characters are a generalization of the characters of the symmetric groups; a generalization that is related to Jack symmetric functions. We investigate the structure coefficients for Jack characters; they are a generalization of the connection coefficients for the symmetric groups. More specifically, we study the cumulants which measure the discrepancy between these structure coefficients and the simplistic structure coefficients related to the disjoint product. We show that Jack characters satisfy approximate factorization property: their cumulants are of very small degree and the character related to a given partition is approximately equal to the product of the characters related to its parts. This result will play a key role in the proof of Gaussianity of fluctuations for a class of random Young diagrams related to the Jack polynomials.
