The Colored Eulerian Descent Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using a new colored analogue of P-partitions, we prove the existence of a colored Eulerian descent algebra which is a subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra. This algebra has a basis consisting of formal sums of colored permutations with the same number of descents (using Steingrímsson's definition of the descent set of a colored permutation). The colored Eulerian descent algebra extends familiar Eulerian descent algebras from the symmetric group algebra and the hyperoctahedral group algebra to colored permutation group algebras. We also describe a set of orthogonal idempotents that spans the colored Eulerian descent algebra and includes, as a special case, the familiar Eulerian idempotents in the group algebra of the symmetric group.

Matrix Units in the Symmetric Group Algebra, and Unitary Integration
In this paper, we establish an explicit isomorphism between the symmetric group algebra and the path algebra of the Young graph. Specifically, we construct a family of matrix units in the group algebra. As a main application of this construction, we obtain new formulas, alternative to Weingarten calculus, for the integral of a polynomial over the unitary group with respect to the Haar measure. In particular, we obtain a closed formula for the law of moments of the first k rows of the unitary group.

Structure coefficients of the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n)$
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 21(4) (2014) 4-35 • View PublicationBIB
The Hecke algebra of the pair $(S_{2n},B_n)$, where $B_n$ is the hyperoctahedral subgroup of $S_{2n}$, was introduced by James in 1961. It is a natural analogue of the center of the symmetric group algebra. In this paper, we give a polynomiality property of its structure coefficients. Our main tool is a combinatorial universal algebra which projects on the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n)$ for every $n$. To build it, we introduce new objects called partial bijections.

Character-theoretic Techniques for Near-central Enumerative Problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The centre of the symmetric group algebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ has been used successfully for studying important problems in enumerative combinatorics. These include maps in orientable surfaces and ramified covers of the sphere by curves of genus $g$, for example. However, the combinatorics of some equally important $\mathfrak{S}_n$-factorization problems forces $k$ elements in $\{1,...,n\}$ to be distinguished. Examples of such problems include the star factorization problem, for which $k=1,$ and the enumeration of 2-cell embeddings of dipoles with two distinguished edges \cite{VisentinWieler:2007} associated with Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase operators in Yang-Mills theory \cite{ConstableFreedmanHeadrick:2002}, for which $k=2.$ Although distinguishing these elements obstructs the use of central methods, these problems may be encoded algebraically in the centralizer of $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ with respect to the subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_{n-k}.$ We develop methods for studying these problems for $k=1,$ and demonstrate their efficacy on the star factorization problem. In a subsequent paper \cite{JacksonSloss:2011}, we consider a special case of the the above dipole problem by means of these techniques.

Partial Jucys-Murphy elements and star factorizations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 33 (2012), pp. 189-198 • Search Publication
In this paper, we look at the number of factorizations of a given permutation into star transpositions. In particular, we give a natural explanation of a hidden symmetry, answering a question of I.P. Goulden and D.M. Jackson. We also have a new proof of their explicit formula. Another result is the normalized class expansion of some central elements of the symmetric group algebra introduced by P. Biane. To obtain this results, we use natural analogs of Jucys-Murphy elements in the algebra of partial permutations of V. Ivanov and S. Kerov. We investigate their properties and use a formula of A. Lascoux and J.Y. Thibon to give the expansion of their power sums on the natural basis of the invariant subalgebra.

The centers of spin symmetric group algebras and Catalan numbers
Published in J. Algebr. Combin. 29 (2009), 175--193. • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing the work of Farahat-Higman on symmetric groups, we describe the structures of the even centers Z_n of integral spin symmetric group superalgebras, which lead to universal algebras termed as the spin FH-algebras. A connection between the odd Jucys-Murphy elements and the Catalan numbers is developed and then used to determine the algebra generators of the spin FH-algebras and of the even centers Z_n.

Monomial bases for the centres of the group algebra and Iwahori--Hecke algebra of S_4
G. E. Murphy showed in 1983 that the centre of every symmetric group algebra has an integral basis consisting of a specific set of monomial symmetric polynomials in the Jucys--Murphy elements. While we have shown in earlier work that the centre of the group algebra of S_3 has exactly three additional such bases, we show in this paper that the centre of the group algebra of S_4 has infinitely many bases consisting of monomial symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy elements, which we characterize completely. The proof of this result involves establishing closed forms for coefficients of class sums in the monomial symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy elements, and solving several resulting exponential Diophantine equations with the aid of a computer. Our initial motivation was in finding integral bases for the centre of the Iwahori--Hecke algebra, and we address this question also, by finding several integral bases of monomial symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy elements for the centre of the Iwahori--Hecke algebra of S_4.

The hook fusion procedure and its generalisations
The fusion procedure provides a way to construct new solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. In the case of the symmetric group the fusion procedure has been used to construct diagonal matrix elements using a decomposition of the Young diagram into its rows or columns. We present a new construction which decomposes the diagram into hooks, the great advantage of this is that it minimises the number of auxiliary parameters needed in the procedure. We go on to use the hook fusion procedure to find diagonal matrix elements computationally and calculate supporting evidence to a previous conjecture. We are motivated by the construction of certain elements that allow us to generate representations of the symmetric group and single out particular irreducible components. In this way we may construct higher representations of the symmetric group from elementary ones. We go some way to generalising the hook fusion procedure by considering other decompositions of Young diagrams, specifically into ribbons. Finally, we adapt our construction to the quantum deformation of the symmetric group algebra known as the Hecke algebra.

A new integral basis for the centre of the Hecke algebra of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a recursive algorithm that produces an integral basis for the centre of the Hecke algebra of type A consisting of linear combinations of monomial symmetric polynomials of Jucys--Murphy elements. We also discuss the existence of integral bases for the centre of the Hecke algebra that consist solely of monomial symmetric polynomials of Jucys--Murphy elements. Finally, for n=3, we show that only one such basis exists for the centre of the Hecke algebra, by proving that there are exactly four bases for the centre of the corresponding symmetric group algebra which consist solely of monomial symmetric polynomials of Jucys--Murphy elements.

Algebraic Structures on Grothendieck Groups of a Tower of Algebras
Published in J. Algebra 321 (2009), no. 8, 2068-2084 • View PublicationBIB
The Grothendieck group of the tower of symmetric group algebras has a self-dual graded Hopf algebra structure. Inspired by this, we introduce by way of axioms, a general notion of a tower of algebras and study two Grothendieck groups on this tower linked by a natural paring. Using representation theory, we show that our axioms give a structure of graded Hopf algebras on each Grothendieck groups and these structures are dual to each other. We give some examples to indicate why these axioms are necessary. We also give auxiliary results that are helpful to verify the axioms. We conclude with some remarks on generalized towers of algebras leading to a structure of generalized bialgebras (in the sense of Loday) on their Grothendieck groups.

The associative operad and the weak order on the symmetric groups
The associative operad is a certain algebraic structure on the sequence of group algebras of the symmetric groups. The weak order is a partial order on the symmetric group. There is a natural linear basis of each symmetric group algebra, related to the group basis by Mobius inversion for the weak order. We describe the operad structure on this second basis: the surprising result is that each operadic composition is a sum over an interval of the weak order. We deduce that the coradical filtration is an operad filtration. The Lie operad, a suboperad of the associative operad, sits in the first component of the filtration. As a corollary to our results, we derive a simple explicit expression for Dynkin's idempotent in terms of the second basis. There are combinatorial procedures for constructing a planar binary tree from a permutation, and a composition from a planar binary tree. These define set-theoretic quotients of each symmetric group algebra. We show that they are operad quotients of the associative operad. Moreover, the Hopf kernels of these quotient maps are suboperads of the associative operad.

P-partitions and a multi-parameter Klyachko idempotent
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11(2) (2005), #R21 • View PublicationBIB
Because they play a role in our understanding of the symmetric group algebra, Lie idempotents have received considerable attention. The Klyachko idempotent has attracted interest from combinatorialists, partly because its definition involves the major index of permutations. For the symmetric group S_n, we look at the symmetric group algebra with coefficients from the field of rational functions in n variables q_1,..., q_n. In this setting, we can define an n-parameter generalization of the Klyachko idempotent, and we show it is a Lie idempotent in the appropriate sense. Somewhat surprisingly, our proof that it is a Lie element emerges from Stanley's theory of P-partitions.

RSK Insertion for Set Partitions and Diagram Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial proofs of two identities from the representation theory of the partition algebra $C A_k(n), n \ge 2k$. The first is $n^k = \sum_λf^λm_k^λ$, where the sum is over partitions $λ$ of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of "vacillating tableaux" of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Our proof uses a combination of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion and jeu de taquin. The second identity is $B(2k) = \sum_λ(m_k^λ)^2$, where $B(2k)$ is the number of set partitions of $\{1, >..., 2k\}$. We show that this insertion restricts to work for the diagram algebras which appear as subalgebras of the partition algebra: the Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, planar partition, rook monoid, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras.

New results on the peak algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The peak algebra is a unital subalgebra of the symmetric group algebra, linearly spanned by sums of permutations with a common set of peaks. By exploiting the combinatorics of sparse subsets of [n-1] (and of certain classes of compositions of n called almost-odd and thin), we construct three new linear bases of this algebra. We discuss two peak analogs of the first Eulerian idempotent and construct a basis of semi-idempotent elements. We use these bases to describe the Jacobson radical of the peak algebra and to characterize the elements of this algebra in terms of the canonical action of the symmetric groups on the tensor algebra of a vector space. We define a chain of ideals such that the ideal at the bottom of the chain is the linear span of sums of permutations with a common set of interior peaks and the ideal at the top is the whole algebra. We extend the above results to these ideals, generalizing results of Schocker (the case of the bottom ideal).

The peak algebra and the descent algebras of types B and D
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 356 (2004), no. 7, 2781--2824 • View PublicationBIB
We show the existence of a unital subalgebra of the symmetric group algebra linearly spanned by sums of permutations with a common peak set, which we call the peak algebra. We show that this algebra is the image of the descent algebra of type B under the map to the descent algebra of type A which forgets the signs, and also the image of the descent algebra of type D. The peak algebra contains a two sided ideal which is defined in terms of interior peaks. This object was introduced in previous work by Nyman; we find that it is the image of certain ideals of the descent algebras of types B and D introduced in previous work of N. Bergeron et al. We derive an exact sequence involving the peak ideal and the peak algebras of degrees $n$ and $n-2$. We obtain this and many other properties of the peak algebra and its peak ideal by first establishing analogous results for signed permutations and then forgetting the signs. In particular, we construct two new commutative semisimple subalgebras of the descent algebra by grouping permutations according to their number of peaks or interior peaks. We discuss the Hopf algebraic structures that exist on the direct sums of these spaces over $n\geq 0$ and explain the connection with previous work of Stembridge; we also obtain new properties of his descents-to-peaks map and construct a type B analog.

The peak algebra of the symmetric group revisited
Published in Adv. in Math. 192 (2005), No. 2, 259-309 • View PublicationBIB
The linear span P_n of the sums of all permutations in the symmetric group S_n with a given set of peaks is a sub-algebra of the symmetric group algebra, due to Nyman. This peak algebra is a left ideal of the descent algebra D_n; and the direct sum P of all P_n is a Hopf sub-algebra of the direct sum D of all D_n, dual to the Stembridge algebra of peak functions. In our self-contained approach, peak counterparts of several results on the descent algebra are established, including a simple combinatorial characterization of the algebra P_n; an algebraic characterization of P_n based on the action on the Poincar'e-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free associative algebra; the display of peak variants of the classical Lie idempotents; an Eulerian-type sub-algebra of P_n; a description of the Jacobson radical of P_n and its nil-potency index, of the principal indecomposable and irreducible P_n-modules, and of the Cartan matrix of P_n. Furthermore, it is shown that the primitive Lie algebra of P is free, and that P is its enveloping algebra.
