The BBDVW Conjecture for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of lower intervals
Blundell, Buesing, Davies, Veličković, and Williamson (BBDVW) introduced the notion of a hypercube decomposition of an interval in Bruhat order. They conjectured a recursive formula in terms of this structure which, if shown for all intervals, would imply the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture of Lusztig and Dyer, for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of the symmetric group. In this article, we prove implications between the BBDVW Conjecture and several other recurrences for hypercube decompositions, under varying hypotheses, which have appeared in the recent literature. As an application, we prove the BBDVW Conjecture for lower intervals $[e,v]$, the first non-trivial class of intervals for which it has been established.

A conjecture on descents, inversions and the weak order
In this article, we discuss the notion of partition of elements in an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$: a partition of an element $w$ is a subset $\mathcal P\subseteq W$ such that the left inversion set of $w$ is the disjoint union of the left inversion set of the elements in $\mathcal P$. Partitions of elements of $W$ arises in the study of the Belkale-Kumar product on the cohomology $H^*(X,\mathbb Z)$, where $X$ is the complete flag variety of any complex semi-simple algebraic group. Partitions of elements in the symmetric group $\mathcal S_n$ are also related to the {\em Babington-Smith model} in algebraic statistics or to the simplicial faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone. We state the conjecture that the number of right descents of $w$ is the sum of the number of right descents of the elements of $\mathcal P$ and prove that this conjecture holds in the cases of symmetric groups (type $A$) and hyperoctahedral groups (type $B$).

Equivalence classes of lower and upper descent weak Bruhat intervals
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathrm{Int}(n)$ denote the set of nonempty left weak Bruhat intervals in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We investigate the equivalence relation $\overset{D}{\simeq}$ on $\mathrm{Int}(n)$, where $I \overset{D}{\simeq} J$ if and only if there exists a descent-preserving poset isomorphism between $I$ and $J$. For each equivalence class $C$ of $(\mathrm{Int}(n), \overset{D}{\simeq})$, a partial order $\preceq$ is defined by $[σ, ρ]_L \preceq [σ', ρ']_L$ if and only if $σ\preceq_R σ'$. Kim-Lee-Oh (2023) showed that the poset $(C, \preceq)$ is isomorphic to a right weak Bruhat interval. In this paper, we focus on lower and upper descent weak Bruhat intervals, specifically those of the form $[w_0(S), σ]_L$ or $[σ, w_1(S)]_L$, where $w_0(S)$ is the longest element in the parabolic subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_S$ of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, generated by $\{s_i \mid i \in S\}$ for a subset $S \subseteq [n-1]$, and $w_1(S)$ is the longest element among the minimal-length representatives of left $\mathfrak{S}_{[n-1] \setminus S}$-cosets in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We begin by providing a poset-theoretic characterization of the equivalence relation $\overset{D}{\simeq}$. Using this characterization, the minimal and maximal elements within an equivalence class $C$ are identified when $C$ is a lower or upper descent interval. Under an additional condition, a detailed description of the structure of $(C, \preceq)$ is provided. Furthermore, for the equivalence class containing $[w_0(S), σ]_L$, an injective hull of ${\sf B}([w_0(S), σ]_L)$ is given, and for the equivalence class containing $[σ, w_1(S)]_L$, a projective cover of ${\sf B}([σ, w_1(S)]_L)$ is given.

Equivariant Ehrhart Theory of Hypersimplices
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e178 • View PublicationBIB
We study the hypersimplex under the action of the symmetric group $S_n$ by coordinate permutation. We prove that the evaluation of its equivariant $H^*$-polynomial at $1$ is the permutation character of decorated ordered set partitions under the natural action of $S_n$. This verifies a conjecture of Stapledon for the hypersimplex. To prove this result, we give a formula for the coefficients of the $H^*$-polynomial. Additionally, for the $(2,n)$-hypersimplex, we use this formula to show that trivial character need not appear as a direct summand of a coefficient of the $H^*$-polynomial, which gives a family of counterexamples to a different conjecture of Stapledon.

Machine Checked Proofs and Programs in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in CPP 2025, Proceedings of the 14th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Certified Programs and Proofs • View PublicationBIB
We present a library of formalized results around symmetric functions and the character theory of symmetric groups. Written in Coq/Rocq and based on the Mathematical Components library, it covers a large part of the contents of a graduate level textbook in the field. The flagship result is a proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule, which computes the structure constants of the algebra of symmetric function in the schur basis which are integer numbers appearing in various fields of mathematics, and which has a long history of wrong proofs. A specific feature of algebraic combinatorics is the constant interplay between algorithms and algebraic constructions: algorithms are not only in computations, but also are key ingredients in definitions and proofs. As such, the proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule deeply relies on the understanding of the execution of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm. Many results in this library are effective and actually used in computer algebra systems, and we discuss their certified implementation.

Counter Example to a Strong Matroid Minor Conjecture
The main result of this note asserts that a strong form of the Matroid Minor Conjecture due to J. Draisma is not true, i.e., there exist properly ascending chains of $S_\infty$-stable ideals in the affine coordinate ring of the affine infinite Grassmannian, where $S_\infty$ is the infinite symmetric group. In fact, we explicitly construct such an ascending chain. His conjectures on topological noetherian property for the affine infinite Grassmannian remain open though.

Distributions of mesh patterns of short lengths on king permutations
Brändén and Claesson introduced the concept of mesh patterns in 2011, and since then, these patterns have attracted significant attention in the literature. Subsequently, in 2015, Hilmarsson \emph{et al.} initiated the first systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns, while Kitaev and Zhang conducted the first systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns in 2019. A permutation $σ= σ_1 σ_2 \cdots σ_n$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ is called a king permutation if $\left| σ_{i+1}-σ_i \right| > 1$ for each $1 \leq i \leq n-1$. Riordan derived a recurrence relation for the number of such permutations in 1965. The generating function for king permutations was obtained by Flajolet and Sedgewick in 2009. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns on king permutations by finding distributions for 22 mesh patterns of short length.

BiSC: An algorithm for discovering generalized permutation patterns
Theorems relating permutations with objects in other fields of mathematics are often stated in terms of avoided patterns. Examples include various classes of Schubert varieties from algebraic geometry (Billey and Abe 2013), commuting functions in analysis (Baxter 1964), beta-shifts in dynamical systems (Elizalde 2011) and homology of representations (Sundaram 1994). We present a new algorithm, BiSC, that, given any set of permutations, outputs a conjecture for describing the set in terms of avoided patterns. The algorithm automatically conjectures the statements of known theorems such as the descriptions of smooth (Lakshmibai and Sandhya 1990) and forest-like permutations (Bousquet-M{é}lou and Butler 2007), Baxter permutations (Chung et al. 1978), stack-sortable (Knuth 1975) and West-2-stack-sortable permutations (West 1990). The algorithm has also been used to discover new theorems and conjectures related to the dihedral and alternating subgroups of the symmetric group, Young tableaux, Wilf-equivalences, and sorting devices.
A universal characterization of the shifted plactic monoid
The plactic monoid $\mathbf{P}$ of Lascoux and Schützenberger (1981) plays an important role in proofs of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for computing multiplicities in the linear representation theory of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cohomology of Grassmannians. Commonly, $\mathbf{P}$ is defined as a quotient of a free monoid by relations derived from a careful analysis of Schensted's insertion algorithm and the jeu de taquin algorithm on semistandard Young tableaux. However, Lascoux and Schützenberger also gave an intrinsic characterization of $\mathbf{P}$ via a universal property. Serrano's (2010) shifted plactic monoid $\mathbf{S}$ is an analogue of $\mathbf{P}$ that governs instead the projective representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cohomology of isotropic Grassmannians. We provide a universal property for $\mathbf{S}$, analogous to the Lascoux-Schützenberger characterization of $\mathbf{P}$.
Promotion, Tangled Labelings, and Sorting Generating Functions
We study Defant and Kravitz's generalization of Schützenberger's promotion operator to arbitrary labelings of finite posets in two directions. Defant and Kravitz showed that applying the promotion operator $n-1$ times to a labeling of a poset on $n$ elements always gives a natural labeling of the poset and called a labeling tangled if it requires the full $n-1$ promotions to reach a natural labeling. They also conjectured that there are at most $(n-1)!$ tangled labelings for any poset on $n$ elements. In the first direction, we propose a further strengthening of their conjecture by partitioning tangled labelings according to the element labeled $n-1$ and prove that this stronger conjecture holds for inflated rooted forest posets and a new class of posets called shoelace posets. In the second direction, we introduce sorting generating functions and cumulative generating functions for the number of labelings that require $k$ applications of the promotion operator to give a natural labeling. We prove that the coefficients of the cumulative generating function of the ordinal sum of antichains are log-concave and obtain a refinement of the weak order on the symmetric group.
On the Terwilliger algebra of the group association scheme of the symmetric group $\operatorname {sym}(7)$
Terwilliger algebras are finite-dimensional semisimple algebras that were first introduced by Paul Terwilliger in 1992 in studies of association schemes and distance-regular graphs. The Terwilliger algebras of the conjugacy class association schemes of the symmetric groups $\operatorname {sym}(n)$, for $3\leq n \leq 6$, have been studied and completely determined. The case for $\operatorname {sym}(7)$ is computationally much more difficult and has a potential application to find the size of the largest permutation codes of $\operatorname {sym}(7)$ with a minimal distance of at least $4$. In this paper, the dimension, the Wedderburn decomposition, and the block dimension decomposition of the Terwilliger algebra of the conjugacy class scheme of the group $\operatorname {sym}(7)$ are determined.

Characters of symmetric groups: sharp bounds on virtual degrees and the Witten zeta function
We prove sharp bounds on the virtual degrees introduced by Larsen and Shalev. This leads to improved bounds on characters of symmetric groups. We then sharpen bounds of Liebeck and Shalev concerning the Witten zeta function. Our main application is a characterization of the fixed-point free conjugacy classes whose associated random walk mixes in 2 steps.

Transfinite hypercentral iterated wreath product of integral domains
Published • View PublicationBIB
Starting with an integral domain $D$ of characteristic $0$, we consider a class of iterated wreath product $W_n$ of $n$ copies of $D$. In order that $W_n$ be transfinite hypercentral, it is necessary to restrict to the case of wreath products defined by way of numerical polynomials. We also associate to each of these groups a Lie ring, providing a correspondence preserving most of the structure. This construction generalizes a result of \cite{netreba} which characterizes the Lie algebras associated to the Sylow \(p\)-subgroups of the symmetric group \(\Sym(p^n)\). As an application, we explore the normalizer chain $\lbrace\mathbf{N}_{i}\rbrace_{i\geq -1}$ starting from the canonical regular abelian subgroup $T$ of $W_n$. Finally, we characterize the regular abelian normal subgroups of $\mathbf{N}_0$ that are isomorphic to $D^n$.

On the Gram determinants of the Specht modules
For every partition $λ$ of a positive integer $n$, let $S^λ$ be the corresponding Specht module of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and let $\det(λ)\in \mathbb Z$ denote the Gram determinant of the canonical bilinear form with respect to the standard basis of $S^λ$. Writing $\det(λ)=m \cdot 2^{a_λ^{(2)}}$ for integers $a_λ^{(2)}$ and $m$ with $m$ odd, we show that if the dimension of $S^λ$ is even, then $a_λ^{(2)}$ is also even. This confirms a conjecture posed by Richard Parker in the special case of the symmetric groups.
A descent-excedance correspondence in colored permutation groups
It is well known that descents and excedances are equidistributed in the symmetric group. We show that the descent and excedance enumerators, summed over permutations with a fixed first letter are identical when we perform a simple change of the first letter. We generalize this to type B and other colored permutation groups. We are led to defining descents and excedances through linear orders. With respect to a particular order, when the number of colors is even, we get a result that generalizes the type B results. Lastly, we get a type B counterpart of Conger's result which refines the well known Carlitz identity.

Twisted multiline queues for the steady states of TASEP and TAZRP
Published in Electron. J. Probab., 30 (2025) pp. 1-31 • View PublicationBIB
We define an algorithm on fermionic and bosonic twisted multiline queues that projects to the multispecies totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) and the totally asymmetric zero range process (TAZRP) on a ring, respectively. Our algorithm on fermionic multiline queues generalizes the Ferrari-Martin algorithm for TASEP, and we show it is equivalent to the algorithm of Arita-Ayyer-Mallick-Prolhac (2011). Our algorithm on bosonic multiline queues is novel and generalizes the corresponding algorithm of Kuniba-Maruyama-Okado (2016) for the TAZRP. We also define a Markov process on bosonic twisted multiline queues that projects to the TAZRP and intertwines with the symmetric group action on the rows of the multiline queues.

On the longest increasing subsequence and number of cycles of butterfly permutations
One method to generate random permutations involves using Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting (GEPP) on a random matrix $A$ and storing the permutation matrix factor $P$ from the resulting GEPP factorization $PA=LU$. We are interested in exploring properties of random butterfly permutations, which are generated using GEPP on specific random butterfly matrices. Our paper highlights new connections among random matrix theory, numerical linear algebra, group actions of rooted trees, and random permutations. We address the questions of the longest increasing subsequence (LIS) and number of cycles for particular uniform butterfly permutations, with full distributional descriptions and limit theorems for simple butterfly permutations. We also establish scaling limit results and limit theorems for nonsimple butterfly permutations, which include certain $p$-Sylow subgroups of the symmetric group of $N=p^n$ elements for prime $p$. For the LIS, we establish power law bounds on the expected LIS of the form $N^{α_p}$ and $N^{β_p}$ where $\frac12 < α_p < β_p < 1$ for each $p$ with $α_p = 1 - o_p(1)$, showing distinction from the typical $O(N^{1/2})$ expected LIS frequently encountered in the study of random permutations (e.g., uniform permutations). For the number of cycles scaled by $(2-1/p)^n$, we establish a full CLT to a new limiting distribution depending on $p$ with positive support we introduce that is uniquely determined by its positive moments that satisfy explicit recursive formulas; this thus determines a CLT for the number of cycles for any uniform $p$-Sylow subgroup of $S_{p^n}$.

Polynomial Expressions for the Dimensions of the Representations of Symmetric Groups and Restricted Standard Young Tableaux
Given a partition $λ$ of a number $k$, it is known that by adding a long line of length $n-k$, the dimension of the associated representation of $S_{n}$ is an integer-valued polynomial of degree $k$ in $n$. We show that its expansion in the binomial basis is bounded by the length of $λ$, and that the resulting coefficient of index $h$, with alternating signs, counts the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ in which a given collection of consecutive $h$ numbers lie in increasing rows. We also construct bijections in order to demonstare explicitly that this number is indeed independent of the set of consecutive $h$ numbers used.

Eigenvalue systems for integer orthogonal bases of multi-matrix invariants at finite N
Multi-matrix invariants, and in particular the scalar multi-trace operators of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with $U(N)$ gauge symmetry, can be described using permutation centraliser algebras (PCA), which are generalisations of the symmetric group algebras and independent of $N$. Free-field two-point functions define an $N$-dependent inner product on the PCA, and bases of operators have been constructed which are orthogonal at finite $N$. Two such bases are well-known, the restricted Schur and covariant bases, and both definitions involve representation-theoretic quantities such as Young diagram labels, multiplicity labels, branching and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for symmetric groups. The explicit computation of these coefficients grows rapidly in complexity as the operator length increases. We develop a new method for explicitly constructing all the operators with specified Young diagram labels, based on an $N$-independent integer eigensystem formulated in the PCA. The eigensystem construction naturally leads to orthogonal basis elements which are integer linear combinations of the multi-trace operators, and the $N$-dependence of their norms are simple known dimension factors. We provide examples and give computer codes in SageMath which efficiently implement the construction for operators of classical dimension up to 14. While the restricted Schur basis relies on the Artin-Wedderburn decomposition of symmetric group algebras, the covariant basis relies on a variant which we refer to as the Kronecker decomposition. Analogous decompositions exist for any finite group algebra and the eigenvalue construction of integer orthogonal bases extends to the group algebra of any finite group with rational characters.
