We study the geometry and topology of exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions from an explicit, combinatorial point of view. This includes a detailed analysis of the structure of the irreducible components and their intersections as well as the construction of an explicit affine paving. Moreover, we compute the ring structure of cohomology by constructing a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the exotic Springer fiber. This homotopy equivalent space admits an action of the type C Weyl group inducing Kato's original exotic Springer representation on cohomology. Our results are described in terms of the diagrammatics of the one-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra (also known as the blob algebra). This provides a first step in generalizing the geometric versions of Khovanov's arc algebra to the exotic setting.
Standard modules, radicals, and the valenced Temperley-Lieb algebra
This article concerns a generalization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, important in applications to conformal field theory. We call this algebra the valenced Temperley-Lieb algebra. We prove salient facts concerning this algebra and its representation theory, which are both of independent interest and used in our subsequent work, where we uniquely and explicitly characterize the monodromy invariant correlation functions of certain conformal field theories.

We derive a simple bijection between geometric plane perfect matchings on $2n$ points in convex position and triangulations on $n+2$ points in convex position. We then extend this bijection to monochromatic plane perfect matchings on periodically $k$-colored vertices and $(k+2)$-gonal tilings of convex point sets. These structures are related to a generalization of Temperley-Lieb algebras and our bijections provide explicit one-to-one relations between matchings and tilings. Moreover, for a given element of one class, the corresponding element of the other class can be computed in linear time.

We compare two important bases of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group: the web basis and the Specht basis. The web basis has its roots in the Temperley-Lieb algebra and knot-theoretic considerations. The Specht basis is a classic algebraic and combinatorial construction of symmetric group representations which arises in this context through the geometry of varieties called Springer fibers. We describe a graph that encapsulates combinatorial relations between each of these bases, prove that there is a unique way (up to scaling) to map the Specht basis into the web representation, and use this to recover a result of Garsia-McLarnan that the transition matrix between the Specht and web bases is upper-triangular with ones along the diagonal. We then strengthen their result to prove vanishing of certain additional entries unless a nesting condition on webs is satisfied. In fact we conjecture that the entries of the transition matrix are nonnegative and are nonzero precisely when certain directed paths exist in the web graph.

We introduce bijections between generalized type $A_n$ noncrossing partitions (that is, associated to arbitrary standard Coxeter elements) and fully commutative elements of the same type. The latter index the diagram basis of the classical Temperley-Lieb algebra, while for each choice of standard Coxeter element the corresponding noncrossing partitions also index a basis, given by the images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra of the simple elements of the dual Garside structure (associated to this choice of standard Coxeter element) of the Artin braid group on $n+1$ strands. We then show that our bijections come from triangular base changes between the diagram basis and the various bases indexed by noncrossing partitions, by explicitly describing the orders giving triangularity. These orders were introduced in a joint paper with Williams and provide exotic lattice structures on noncrossing partitions. Several combinatorial objects are introduced along the way, including an involution on the set of noncrossing partitions.
Tutte relations, TQFT, and planarity of cubic graphs

It has been known since the work of Tutte that the value of the chromatic polynomial of planar triangulations at $(3+\sqrt{5})/2$ has a number of remarkable properties. We investigate to what extent Tutte's relations characterize planar graphs. A version of the Tutte linear relation for the flow polynomial at $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$ is shown to give a planarity criterion for $3$-connected cubic graphs. A conjecture is formulated that the golden identity for the flow polynomial characterizes planarity of cubic graphs as well. In addition, Tutte's upper bound on the chromatic polynomial of planar triangulations at $(3+\sqrt{5})/2$ is generalized to other Beraha numbers, and an exponential lower bound is given for the value at $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$. The proofs of these results rely on the structure of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and more generally on methods of topological quantum field theory.

We define a tower of injections of $\tilde{C}$-type Coxeter groups $W(\tilde C_{n})$ for $n\geq 1$. We define a tower of Hecke algebras and we use the faithfulness at the Coxeter level to show that this last tower is a tower of injections. Let $W^c(\tilde C_{n})$ be the set of fully commutative elements in $W(\tilde C_{n})$, we classify the elements of $W^c(\tilde C_{n})$ and give a normal form for them. We use this normal form to define two injections from $W^c(\tilde C_{n-1})$ into $W^c(\tilde C_{n})$. We then define the tower of affine Temperley-Lieb algebras of type $\tilde{C }$ and use the injections above to prove the faithfulness of this tower.

We study the rational permutation braids, that is the elements of an Artin-Tits group of spherical type which can be written $x^{-1} y$ where $x$ and $y$ are prefixes of the Garside element of the braid monoid. We give a geometric characterization of these braids in type $A_n$ and $B_n$ and then show that in spherical types different from $D_n$ the simple elements of the dual braid monoid (for arbitrary choice of Coxeter element) embedded in the braid group are rational permutation braids (we conjecture this to hold also in type $D_n$).This property implies positivity properties of the polynomials arising in the linear expansion of their images in the Iwahori-Hecke algebra when expressed in the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. In type $A_n$, it implies positivity properties of their images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra when expressed in the diagram basis.
Connected components of meanders: I. Bi-rainbow meanders

Closed meanders are planar configurations of one or several disjoint closed Jordan curves intersecting a given line or curve transversely. They arise as shooting curves of parabolic PDEs in one space dimension, as trajectories of Cartesian billiards, and as representations of elements of Temperley-Lieb algebras.
Given the configuration of intersections, for example as a permutation or an arc collection, the number of Jordan curves is unknown and needs to be determined.
We address this question in the special case of bi-rainbow meanders, which are given as non-branched families (rainbows) of nested arcs. Easily obtainable results for small bi-rainbow meanders containing up to four families suggest an expression of the number of curves by the greatest common divisor (gcd) of polynomials in the sizes of the rainbow families.
We prove however, that this is not the case. In fact, the number of connected components of bi-rainbow meanders with more than four families cannot be expressed as the gcd of polynomials in the sizes of the rainbows.
On the other hand, we provide a complexity analysis of nose-retraction algorithms. They determine the number of connected components of arbitrary bi-rainbow meanders in logarithmic time. In fact, the nose-retraction algorithms resemble the Euclidean algorithm, which is used to determine the gcd, in structure and complexity.
Looking for a closed formula of the number of connected components, the nose-retraction algorithm is as good as a gcd-formula and therefore as good as we can possibly expect.

We prove that the restriction of Bruhat order to noncrossing partitions in type $A_n$ for the Coxeter element $c=s_1s_2 ...s_n$ forms a distributive lattice isomorphic to the order ideals of the root poset ordered by inclusion. Motivated by the change-of-basis from the graphical basis of the Temperley-Lieb algebra to the image of the simple elements of the dual braid monoid, we extend this bijection to other Coxeter elements using certain canonical factorizations. In particular, we give new bijections---fixing the set of reflections---between noncrossing partitions associated to distinct Coxeter elements.

We introduce a new basis of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. It is defined using a bijection between noncrossing partitions and fully commutative elements together with a basis introduced by Zinno, which is obtained by mapping the simple elements of the Birman-Ko-Lee braid monoid to the Temperley-Lieb algebra. The combinatorics of the new basis involve the Bruhat order restricted to noncrossing partitions. As an application we can derive properties of the coefficients of the base change matrix between Zinno's basis and the well-known diagram or Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. In particular, we give closed formulas for some of the coefficients of the expansion of an element of the diagram basis in the Zinno basis.
Link Patterns and the Catalan Tree
We demonstrate that a natural construction based on the two notions of insertion of a strand and finding the preimages of Temperley-Lieb algebra generators give an inductive means to generate all link patterns of a given number of strands. It is shown that the structure of the Catalan tree (as defined by Julian West) arises in the process of this induction, and that it can be exploited to give some refined enumerations of link patterns.
A quantum combinatorial approach for computing a tetrahedral network of Jones-Wenzl projectors
Trivalent plane graphs are used in various areas of mathematics which relate for instance to the colored Jones polynomial, invariants of 3-manifolds and quantum computation. Their evaluation is based on computations in the Temperley-Lieb algebra and more specifically the Jones-Wenzl projectors. We use the work by Kauffman-Lins to present a quantum combinatorial approach for evaluating a tetrahedral net. On the way we recover two equivalent definitions for the unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind and we provide an equality for the quantized factorial using these numbers.

Let $n$ be a nonnegative integer, we use ribbon $n-$graph diagrams and the Yamada polynomial skein relations to construct an algebra ${\mathcal Y}_n$ which is shown to be closely related to the Temerley-Lieb Algebra. We prove that the algebra ${\mathcal Y}_2$ is isomorphic to some quotient of a three variables polynomial algebra. Then, we give a family of generators for the algebra ${\mathcal Y}_3$.

We introduce an associative algebra $\M_k(x)$ whose dimension is the $2k$-th Motzkin number. The algebra $\M_k(x)$ has a basis of "Motzkin diagrams," which are analogous to Brauer and Temperley-Lieb diagrams, and it contains the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\TL_k(x)$ as a subalgebra. We prove that for a particular value of $x$, the algebra $\M_k(x)$ is the centralizer algebra of $\uqsl$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor power of the sum of the 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional irreducible $\uqsl$-modules. We show that $\M_k(x)$ is generated by special diagrams $\ell_i, t_i, r_i \ (1 \le i < k)$ and $p_j \ (1 \le j \le k)$, and that it has a factorization into three subalgebras $\M_k(x) = \RP_k \TL_k(x)\, \LP_k$, all of which have dimensions given by Catalan numbers. We define an action of $\M_k(x)$ on Motzkin paths of rank $r$, and in this way, construct a set of indecomposable modules $\C_k^{(r)}$, $0 \le r \le k$. We prove that $\M_k(x)$ is cellular in the sense of Graham and Lehrer and that the $\C_k^{(r)}$ are the left cell representations. We compute the determinant of the Gram matrix of a bilinear form on $\C_k^{(r)}$ for each $r$ and use these determinants to show that $\M_k(x)$ is semisimple exactly when $x$ is not the root of certain Chebyshev polynomials.
Representations of the Temperley-Lieb Algebra via a New Inner Product on Half-Diagrams
We describe an inner product on the diagrams on which the Temperley-Lieb algebra can be represented. We exhibit several constructions which are in natural combinatorial bijection with these diagrams, which are generalizations of various constructions counted by the Catalan numbers. We use a method similar to the existing ones for orthogonalizing the Temperley-Lieb algebra to construct an orthogonal basis for the vector space over these diagrams.

There is a natural bijection between Dyck paths and basis diagrams of the Temperley-Lieb algebra defined via tiling. Overhang paths are certain generalisations of Dyck paths allowing more general steps but restricted to a rectangle in the two-dimensional integer lattice. We show that there is a natural bijection, extending the above tiling construction, between overhang paths and basis diagrams of the Brauer algebra.

This paper introduces a conceptual framework, in the context of quantum topology and the algebras underlying it, for analyzing relations obeyed by the chromatic polynomial χ(Q) of planar graphs. Using it we give new proofs and substantially extend a number of classical results concerning the combinatorics of the chromatic polynomial. In particular, we show that Tutte's golden identity is a consequence of level-rank duality for SO(N) topological quantum field theories and Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras. This identity is a remarkable feature of the chromatic polynomial relating χ({φ+2}) for any triangulation of the sphere to (χ({φ+1}))^2 for the same graph, where φdenotes the golden ratio. The new viewpoint presented here explains that Tutte's identity is special to these values of the parameter Q. A natural context for analyzing such properties of the chromatic polynomial is provided by the {\em chromatic algebra}, whose Markov trace is the chromatic polynomial of an associated graph. We use it to show that another identity of Tutte's for the chromatic polynomial at Q=φ+1 arises from a Jones-Wenzl projector in the Temperley-Lieb algebra. We generalize this identity to each value Q= 2+2\cos(2πj/(n+1)) for j< n positive integers. When j=1, these Q are the Beraha numbers, where the existence of such identities was conjectured by Tutte. We present a recursive formula for this sequence of chromatic polynomial relations.

We study the q-deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation in path representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebras. We consider two types of open boundary conditions, and in both cases we derive factorised expressions for the solutions of the qKZ equation in terms of Baxterised Demazurre-Lusztig operators. These expressions are alternative to known integral solutions for tensor product representations. The factorised expressions reveal the algebraic structure within the qKZ equation, and effectively reduce it to a set of truncation conditions on a single scalar function. The factorised expressions allow for an efficient computation of the full solution once this single scalar function is known. We further study particular polynomial solutions for which certain additional factorised expressions give weighted sums over components of the solution. In the homogeneous limit, we formulate positivity conjectures in the spirit of Di Francesco and Zinn-Justin. We further conjecture relations between weighted sums and individual components of the solutions for larger system sizes.
