Supersaturation Problem for Color-Critical Graphs

The \emph{Turán function} $\ex(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph with $n$ vertices. The classical results of Turán and Rademacher from 1941 led to the study of supersaturated graphs where the key question is to determine $h_F(n,q)$, the minimum number of copies of $F$ that a graph with $n$ vertices and $\ex(n,F)+q$ edges can have.
We determine $h_F(n,q)$ asymptotically when $F$ is \emph{color-critical} (that is, $F$ contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number) and $q=o(n^2)$.
Determining the exact value of $h_F(n,q)$ seems rather difficult. For example, let $c_1$ be the limit superior of $q/n$ for which the extremal structures are obtained by adding some $q$ edges to a maximum $F$-free graph. The problem of determining $c_1$ for cliques was a well-known question of Erd\H os that was solved only decades later by Lovász and Simonovits. Here we prove that $c_1>0$ for every {color-critical}~$F$. Our approach also allows us to determine $c_1$ for a number of graphs, including odd cycles, cliques with one edge removed, and complete bipartite graphs plus an edge.
On Barnette's Conjecture and $H^{+-}$ property

A conjecture of Barnette states that every 3-connected cubic bipartite plane graph has a Hamilton cycle, which is equivalent to the statement that every simple even plane triangulation admits a partition of its vertex set into two subsets so that each induces a tree.
Let $G$ be a simple even plane triangulation and suppose that ${V_1, V_2, V_3}$ is a 3-coloring of the vertex set of $G$. Let $B_{i}$, $i = 1, 2, 3$, be the set of all vertices in $V_i$ of the degree at least 6. We prove that if induced graphs $G[B_1 \cup B_2]$ and $G[B_1 \cup B_3]$ are acyclic, then the following properties are satisfied: [6pt] (1) For every path $abc$ there is possible to partition the vertex set of $G$ into two subsets so that each induces a tree, and one of them contains the edge $ab$ and avoids the vertex $c$, [6pt] (2) For every path $abc$ with vertices $a$, $c$ of the same color there is possible to partition the vertex set of $G$ into two subsets so that each induces a tree, and one of them contains the path $abc$.
T-systems with boundaries from network solutions

In this paper, we use the network solution of the $A_r$ $T$-system to derive that of the unrestricted $A_\infty$ $T$-system, equivalent to the octahedron relation. We then present a method for implementing various boundary conditions on this system, which consists of picking initial data with suitable symmetries. The corresponding restricted $T$-systems are solved exactly in terms of networks. This gives a simple explanation for phenomena such as the Zamolodchikov periodicity property for $T$-systems (corresponding to the case $A_\ell\times A_r$) and a combinatorial interpretation for the positive Laurent property of the variables of the associated cluster algebra. We also explain the relation between the $T$-system wrapped on a torus and the higher pentagram maps of Gekhtman et al.

We prove a formula for certain cubic $\Z_n$-Hodge integrals in terms of loop Schur functions. We use this identity to prove the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local $\Z_n$-gerbes over $\proj^1$.

We give a combinatorial proof of a natural generalization of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule to loop Schur functions. We also define shifted loop Schur functions and prove that they satisfy a similar relation.
Affine polar spaces derived from polar spaces and Grassmann structures defined on them
We prove that an affine polar space in the meaning of Cohen and Shult can be recovered from one of the three adjacency relations on a Grassmann structure over it. The result directly generalizes the results of our previous work where we use an affine space over a vector space equipped with a nondegenerate reflexive form as a starting point to the Cohen-Shult affine polar spaces.
Enumerating triangulations by parallel diagonals
The triangulations of a regular convex polygon are enumerated according to the number of diagonals parallel to a fixed edge. The enumeration uses the Shapiro convolution identity, as well as an interpretation of this identity in terms of triangulations.

In this paper we determine the graph whose least eigenvalue of signless Laplacian attains the minimum or maximum among all connected non-bipartite graphs of fixed order and given number of pendant vertices. Thus we obtain a lower bound and an upper bound for the least eigenvalue of signless Laplacian of a graph in terms of the number of pendent vertices.

In a recent paper Konvalinka and Lauve proved several skew Pieri rules for Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In this note we show that q-analogues of these rules are encoded in a q-binomial theorem for Macdonald polynomials due to Lascoux and the author.

Counting Spanning Trees of Threshold Graphs
Cayley's formula states that there are $n^{n-2}$ spanning trees in the complete graph on $n$ vertices; it has been proved in more than a dozen different ways over its 150 year history. The complete graphs are a special case of threshold graphs, and using Merris' Theorem and the Matrix Tree Theorem, there is a strikingly simple formula for counting the number of spanning trees in a threshold graph on $n$ vertices; it is simply the product, over $i=2,3, ...,n-1$, of the number of vertices of degree at least $i$. In this manuscript, we provide a direct combinatorial proof for this formula which does not use the Matrix Tree Theorem; the proof is an extension of Joyal's proof for Cayley's formula. Then we apply this methodology to give a formula for the number of spanning trees in any difference graph.
Metric dimension for random graphs
The metric dimension of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of vertices in a subset $S$ of the vertex set of $G$ such that all other vertices are uniquely determined by their distances to the vertices in $S$. In this paper we investigate the metric dimension of the random graph $G(n,p)$ for a wide range of probabilities $p=p(n)$.
On minors of maximal determinant matrices

By an old result of Cohn (1965), a Hadamard matrix of order n has no proper Hadamard submatrices of order m > n/2. We generalise this result to maximal determinant submatrices of Hadamard matrices, and show that an interval of length asymptotically equal to n/2 is excluded from the allowable orders. We make a conjecture regarding a lower bound for sums of squares of minors of maximal determinant matrices, and give evidence in support of the conjecture. We give tables of the values taken by the minors of all maximal determinant matrices of orders up to and including 21 and make some observations on the data. Finally, we describe the algorithms that were used to compute the tables.
The $\s$-Eulerian polynomials have only real roots

We study the roots of generalized Eulerian polynomials via a novel approach. We interpret Eulerian polynomials as the generating polynomials of a statistic over inversion sequences. Inversion sequences (also known as Lehmer codes or subexcedant functions) were recently generalized by Savage and Schuster, to arbitrary sequences $\s$ of positive integers, which they called $\s$-inversion sequences.
Our object of study is the generating polynomial of the {\em ascent} statistic over the set of $\s$-inversion sequences of length $n$. Since this ascent statistic over inversion sequences is equidistributed with the descent statistic over permutations we call this generalized polynomial the \emph{$\s$-Eulerian polynomial}. The main result of this paper is that, for any sequence $\s$ of positive integers, the $\s$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots.
This result is first shown to generalize many existing results about the real-rootedness of various Eulerian polynomials. We then show that it can be used to settle a conjecture of Brenti, that Eulerian polynomials for all finite Coxeter groups have only real roots. It is then extended to several $q$-analogs. We also show that the MacMahon--Carlitz $q$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots whenever $q$ is a positive real number confirming a conjecture of Chow and Gessel. The same holds true for the $(\des,\finv)$-generating polynomials and also for the $(\des,\fmaj)$-generating polynomials for the hyperoctahedral group and the wreath product groups, confirming further conjectures of Chow and Gessel, and Chow and Mansour, respectively.

We classify flag complexes on at most 12 vertices with torsion in the first homology group. The result is moderately computer-aided.
As a consequence we confirm a folklore conjecture that the smallest poset whose order complex is homotopy equivalent to the real projective plane (and also the smallest poset with torsion in the first homology group) has exactly 13 elements.

We confirm Sun's conjecture that $(\root{n+1}\of{F_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{F_n})_{n\ge 4}$ is strictly decreasing to the limit 1, where $(F_n)_{n\ge0}$ is the Fibonacci sequence. We also prove that the sequence $(\root{n+1}\of{D_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{D_n})_{n\ge3}$ is strictly decreasing with limit $1$, where $D_n$ is the $n$-th derangement number. For $m$-th order harmonic numbers $H_n^{(m)}=\sum_{k=1}^n 1/k^m\ (n=1,2,3,\ldots)$, we show that $(\root{n+1}\of{H^{(m)}_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{H^{(m)}_n})_{n\ge3}$ is strictly increasing.
An equivalence relation on the symmetric group and multiplicity-free flag h-vectors

We consider the equivalence relation ~ on the symmetric group S_n generated by the interchange of two adjacent elements a_i and a_{i+1} of w=a_1 ... a_n in S_n such that |a_i - a_{i+1}|=1. We count the number of equivalence classes and the sizes of equivalence classes. The results are generalized to permutations of multisets using umbral techniques. In the original problem, the equivalence class containing the identity permutation is the set of linear extensions of a certain poset. Further investigation yields a characterization of all finite graded posets whose flag h-vector takes on only the values -1, 0, 1.
The Ammann-Beenker tilings revisited
This paper introduces two tiles whose tilings form a one-parameter family of tilings which can all be seen as digitization of two-dimensional planes in the four-dimensional Euclidean space. This family contains the Ammann-Beenker tilings as the solution of a simple optimization problem.
