On the combinatorics of the refined 1-leg DT/PT correspondence
We provide a new proof of a result of Bessenrodt on the relation among the generating series of reversed plane partitions and skew plane partitions, motivated by the geometric DT/PT wallcrossing formula for local curves recently proved by the third author. This also recovers a result of Sagan.
We moreover establish various new closed formulas for the weighted enumeration of reversed and skew plane partitions, proving a result dual to a theorem by Gansner, we find a new identity on the generating series counting internal and external hooks of a given Young diagram, and we combine the latter with Bessenrodt's theorem. Finally, we interpret our results as identities in the Fock space via the bosonic/fermionic formalism.
Log-concavity from enumerative geometry of planar curve singularities
We propose a log-concavity conjecture for BPS invariants arising in the enumerative geometry of planar curve singularities, identified with the local Euler obstructions of Severi strata in their versal deformations. We further extend this conjecture to ruling polynomials of Legendrian links and to E-polynomials of character varieties. We establish these conjectures for irreducible weighted-homogeneous singularities (torus knots) and for ADE singularities, and prove a multiplicative property for ruling polynomials compatible with log-concavity.
Landau Analysis in the Grassmannian
Momentum twistors for scattering amplitudes in particle physics are lines in three-space. We develop Landau analysis for Feynman integrals in this setting. The resulting discriminants and resultants are identified with Hurwitz and Chow forms of incidence varieties in products of Grassmannians. We study their degrees and factorizations, and the kinematic regimes in which the fibers of the Landau map are rational or real. Identifying this map with the amplituhedron map on positroid varieties, and the associated recursions with promotion maps, yields a geometric mechanism for the emergence of positivity and cluster structures in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory.
Polyptych lattices and marked chain-order polytopes
The theory of polyptych lattices is a framework to obtain a family of toric degenerations whose polytopes are related by piecewise-linear transformations. It can be regarded as a generalization of toric degenerations arising from cluster algebras. In this paper, we study polyptych lattices consisting of transfer maps for marked chain-order polytopes, and obtain a family of toric degenerations of a projective variety to marked chain-order polytopes for the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset. We also compute the Cox ring of this projective variety.
Moment inequalities for Chow polynomials of matroids and bounds on Chern numbers
The Chow polynomial of a matroid is a fundamental invariant whose coefficients exhibit strong positivity properties, including $γ$-positivity. We interpret the normalized Chow coefficients as a probability distribution and establish new inequalities for its central moments. As consequences, we obtain bounds on the number of flags of flats and inequalities on the roots of the Chow polynomial.
We further relate these moment inequalities to algebraic geometry via the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus. This yields new inequalities for matroidal Chern numbers. In particular, for any matroid of rank $d+1$, we prove that $c_1c_{d-1}\le c_d$, with equality if and only if $d=1$ or the simplification of the matroid is Boolean.
Cyclotomic generating functions, empty weighted complete intersections and positivity
We give a sufficient combinatorial condition for the non-negativity of the coefficients of polynomial quotients of products of $q$-integers, also known as cyclotomic generating functions (CGFs). This slightly extends work by Iano-Fletcher, Pizzato, Sano and Tasin, who studied this condition as a criterion for quasismoothness of complete intersections in weighted projective spaces. As a consequence, we solve a problem by Billey and Swanson, prove most cases of an unpublished conjecture by Stanton and most cases of two conjectures by Gatzweiler and Krattenthaler. We also study sufficient conditions given by structural properties of the division lattice.
Generalizing Saito's Criterion for Nonfree Arrangements
Saito's criterion is a foundational result that algebraically characterizes free hyperplane arrangements via the determinant of a square matrix of logarithmic derivations. It is natural to ask whether this criterion can be generalized to the non-free setting. To address this, we formulate a general problem concerning the maximal minors of a $p \times \ell$ ($p \geq \ell$) derivation matrix and the algebraic relations among their associated coefficients. Focusing on strictly plus-one generated (SPOG) arrangements, we completely solve this minor-based recognition problem under the assumption that $\operatorname{pd} D(\mathcal{A}) \leq 1$. As a direct consequence, we obtain a purely algebraic, necessary and sufficient characterization of SPOG arrangements in dimension three. Ultimately, this framework provides a computable bridge to post-free arrangement theory.
A canonicity criterion for toric varieties and the classification of canonical 4-simplices
Based on the Reid-Shepherd-Barron-Tai criterion for canonical and terminal quotient singularities, we characterize canonicity and terminality of a toric variety in terms of its local class group actions. Specializing it to the Picard number one setting, we arrive at a classification algorithm for canonical and terminal fake weighted projective spaces in any dimension. In dimension four it gives, up to isomorphism, 710450 canonical fake weighted projective spaces. We take a look at the corresponding Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, compute the Fine interior of the associated canonical simplices, and discuss the results.
Neutral-Fermion constructions of factorial $gp$-and $gq$-Functions
We develop neutral-fermionic constructions for the factorial $gp$- and $gq$-functions introduced by Nakagawa and Naruse, which are respectively dual to the factorial $GQ$- and $GP$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse. In particular, we realize the factorial $GP$-, $GQ$- and $gq$-functions as vacuum expectation values. As applications, we obtain, Jacobi--Trudi type determinantal formulas for the transition coefficients between functions with different equivariant parameters for $gq$ and its dual $GP$, as well as a Pfaffian formula for the factorial $gq$-functions. We further prove a remarkable coincidence among the transition coefficients for parameter changes for $gp$, $gq$, $GQ$, and $GP$. These coefficients admit a description in terms of factorial Grothendieck polynomials of type A.
Deligne--Lusztig varieties, toric orbifolds, and the $q$-Klyachko algebra
We investigate the geometry behind the $q$-Klyachko algebra, introduced by Nadeau--Tewari. When $q$ is a prime power, we show that the $q$-Klyachko algebra is the image of the pullback map on Chow rings $\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{Fl}_{n+1})\to\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{DL}_n)$, where $\mathrm{DL}_n\subseteq \mathrm{Fl}_n$ is a compactified Deligne--Lusztig variety inside the complete flag variety $\mathrm{Fl}_{n+1}$. When $q$ is a positive rational number, we establish a Kähler package for the $q$-Klyachko algebra through inputs from toric geometry.
Computation and sampling for Schubert specializations
We present computational results on principal specializations $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ of Schubert polynomials, which count reduced pipe dreams and reduced bumpless pipe dreams (RBPD). We find the first counterexample, at $n=17$, to the Merzon-Smirnov conjecture (arXiv:1410.6857) that the maximum of $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ over $S_n$ is attained at a layered permutation. The simulations suggest that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \log(\max_{w\in S_n}\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n))/n^2$ equals the maximal layered permutations' constant from Morales-Pak-Panova (arXiv:1805.04341). We also explore the random permutation drawn from the distribution proportional to $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$, revealing permuton-like asymptotics similar to those for Grothendieck polynomials by Morales-Panova-Petrov-Yeliussizov (arXiv:2407.21653).
We implement and compare three recurrences for $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$: the descent formula (Macdonald), transition formula (Lascoux--Schutzenberger), and cotransition formula (Knutson). For sampling uniformly random RBPDs (whose count is $\sum_{w\in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$), we show that reducedness breaks the sublattice property of the ASM lattice, preventing monotone CFTP and causing false coalescence. We develop an efficient MCMC sampler with macroscopic "droop" updates for connectivity and fast mixing. Our code computes $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ up to $n\sim 20$ and samples random RBPDs up to $n\sim 60$ on a personal computer ($n\sim 100$ on a cluster).
The Euler Stratification for $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^n$
We study the Euler characteristic of a hypersurface in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2 \times (\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ defined by a polynomial whose monomial support corresponds to lattice points in $Δ_1 \times Δ_1 \times Δ_n$ as the coefficients of the defining polynomial vary. Each member of this hypersurface family corresponds to a three-way independence model from algebraic statistics, and the (signed) Euler characteristic is equal to the maximum likelihood degree (ML degree) of the model. We show in the case of $Δ_1 \times Δ_1 \times Δ_1$ this Euler characteristic depends only on the vanishing patterns of the factors of the principal $A$-determinant, but this fails for $Δ_1 \times Δ_1 \times Δ_n$ with $n \geq 2$. We prove that, for all $n\geq 1$, all positive integers up to the maximum possible ML degree can be realized as the Euler characteristic. Furthermore, we completely determine the Euler stratification for $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and provide partial information for $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$.
Gamma positivity, PL homeomorphism types, and orthogonal polynomials
Using preservations of PL homeomorphism types under edge contractions (the link condition) as a topological proxy for flagness, we give a quantitative description of the effect flagness on on gamma positivity of simplicial spheres. In particular, we show that the link condition has a trivial effect on the $g$-vectors (and thus gamma vectors) of high-dimensional simplicial spheres with nonnegative gamma vectors in many cases. Note that this reflects a dichotomy between quantitative behavior arising from $g_1$ components that are linear in $d$ and those that are superlinear in $d$. When the link condition is nontrivial, we show that it gives a lower bound for growth rates of $g$-vector components. This lower bound increases with the number of edges and the distance of the $M$-vector condition on $g$-vectors of simplicial spheres from equality. These lower bounds translate to ones on top gamma vector components and give lower bounds on gamma vector growth rates when the gamma vector components are dominant terms in the $g$-vector components with the same index (e.g. $g$-vectors with components increasing quickly compared to $d$). Finally, we show that the same results apply to positivity properties generalizing gamma positivity arising from connections between orthogonal polynomials and lattice paths. In the course of doing this, we describe gamma vector components in terms of monomer/dimer covers and point out connections between repeated (stellar) edge subdivisions (Tchebyshev subdivisions) and dimer covers.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of toric varieties with at most one singular point
We establish upper bounds for the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the coordinate ring of a simplicial projective toric variety with at most one singular point. In the smooth case, our results recover the bound of Herzog and Hibi [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 131 (2003), 2641--2647], and therefore the Eisenbud--Goto bound. Furthermore, when the variety has exactly one singular point and dimension at least $3$, we prove that its regularity also satisfies the Eisenbud--Goto bound. The proof combines combinatorial and homological methods: we study the asymptotic behavior of the sumsets associated to the toric variety and relate it to Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity via a Hochster-like formula.
Mysterious points in keys but not trees
The deep locus of a cluster variety is defined to be the set of its points that do not belong to any cluster torus. We show that, if the cluster variety has a seed whose mutable part is a tree without multiple edges, then the deep locus can be characterized as the set of points whose stabilizer under a certain group action is nontrivial. Deep points without a stabilizer are called mysterious. We establish that many other classes of acyclic quivers (including keys) often have mysterious points. This refutes Conjecture 1.1 of arXiv:2402.16970, but establishes it in many important cases.
On uniform large genus asymptotics of Witten's intersection numbers
Following ideas from [14], we give a uniform large genus asymptotics for primitive psi-class intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, and extend this result including insertions of zeros in a certain uniform way. Application to a particular formal solution of the Painlevé I equation is given. We also use a method from [14] to give a new proof of the polynomiality conjecture on large genus asymptotic expansions of psi-class intersection numbers.
Jacobian graphs
We introduce jacobian graphs, which are explicit families of regular graphs that are spectrally indistinguishable from random graphs, but whose local structure is very different from that of random graphs. The construction relies on the geometric properties of generalized jacobians of curves and on general equidistribution theorems for character sums over finite fields.
The genus of configuration curves of planar linkages is generically odd
A one-degree-of-freedom graph is a graph obtained from a minimally rigid graph in the plane and removing an edge. For such graph, the set of realisations with fixed edge length, modulo rotations and reflections, is an algebraic curve. The genus of a connected component for generic edge lengths is a number that depends only on the graph. We prove that this genus is always odd, unless it is zero. The proof is based on tropical geometry.
The ABCT Variety $V(3,n)$ is a Positive Geometry
The ABCT variety $V(3,n)$ is the image closure of the rational Veronese map from the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(2,n)$ to the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(3,n)$. It was studied by Arkani-Hamed--Bourjaily--Cachazo--Trnka in the context of tree-level scattering amplitudes arising in planar $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and Witten's twistor string theory. From this perspective, $V(3,n)$ is conjectured to be a positive geometry by Lam.
In this paper, we study the combinatorial and algebraic geometry aspects of $V(3,n)$ and its subvarieties induced by iteratively taking analytic boundaries of the totally nonnegative part. We interpret these subvarieties as point configurations on $\mathbb{P}^2$ by the Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence. We construct a top-degree meromorphic form on $V(3,n)$ and show that it is a positive geometry, proving Lam's conjecture.
Graded Ehrhart Theory of Unimodular Zonotopes
Graded Ehrhart theory is a new $q$-analogue of Ehrhart theory based on the orbit harmonics method. We study the graded Ehrhart theory of unimodular zonotopes from a matroid-theoretic perspective. Generalizing a result of Stanley (1991), we prove that the graded lattice point count of a unimodular zonotope is a $q$-evaluation of its Tutte polynomial. We conclude that the graded Ehrhart series of a unimodular zonotope is rational and obeys graded Ehrhart--Macdonald reciprocity. In an algebraic direction, we prove that the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope is a coordinate ring of its associated arrangement Schubert variety. Using the geometry of arrangement Schubert varieties, we prove that the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope is finitely generated and Cohen--Macaulay. We also give an explicit presentation of the harmonic algebra of a unimodular zonotope in terms of generators and relations. We conclude by classifying which unimodular zonotopes have Gorenstein harmonic algebras. Our work answers, in the special case of unimodular zonotopes, two conjectures of Reiner and Rhoades (2024).
