Determinants of generalized binary band matrices
Published in Proceedings of the Komi Science Centre of the UrD RAS. 2016. N 4(28). pp. 5-10 • Search Publication
Under binary matrices we mean matrices whose entries take one of two values. In this paper, explicit formulae for calculating the determinant of some type of binary Toeplitz matrices are obtained. Examples of the application of the determinant of binary Toeplitz matrices for the enumeration of even and odd permutations of different types are given.
Semi-Baxter and strong-Baxter: two relatives of the Baxter sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we enumerate two families of pattern-avoiding permutations: those avoiding the vincular pattern $2-41-3$, which we call semi-Baxter permutations, and those avoiding the vincular patterns $2-41-3$, $3-14-2$ and $3-41-2$, which we call strong-Baxter permutations. We call semi-Baxter numbers and strong-Baxter numbers the associated enumeration sequences. We prove that the semi-Baxter numbers enumerate in addition plane permutations (avoiding $2-14-3$). The problem of counting these permutations was open and has given rise to several conjectures, which we also prove in this paper. For each family (that of semi-Baxter -- or equivalently, plane -- and that of strong-Baxter permutations), we describe a generating tree, which translates into a functional equation for the generating function. For semi-Baxter permutations, it is solved using (a variant of) the kernel method: this gives an expression for the generating function while also proving its D-finiteness. From the obtained generating function, we derive closed formulas for the semi-Baxter numbers, a recurrence that they satisfy, as well as their asymptotic behavior. For strong-Baxter permutations, we show that their generating function is (a slight modification of) that of a family of walks in the quarter plane, which is known to be non D-finite.

Enumeration of Carlitz Multipermutations
A multipermutation with $k$ copies each of $1\ldots n$ is Carlitz if neighbours are different. We enumerate these objects for $k=2,3,4$ and derive recurrences. In particular, we prove and improve a conjectured recurrence for $k=3$, stated in OEIS, the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Enumeration of Tree-like Maps with Arbitrary Number of Vertices
This paper provides the generating series for the embedding of tree-like graphs of arbitrary number of vertices, accourding to their genus. It applies and extends the techniques of Chan, where it was used to give an alternate proof of the Goulden and Slofstra formula. Furthermore, this greatly generalizes the famous Harer-Zagier formula, which computes the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of curves, and is equivalent to the computation of one vertex maps.

Enumeration of complementary-dual cyclic $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-linear $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$-codes
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field of order $q,$ $n$ be a positive integer coprime to $q$ and $t \geq 2$ be an integer. In this paper, we enumerate all the complementary-dual cyclic $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$-codes of length $n$ by placing $\ast$, ordinary and Hermitian trace bilinear forms on $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}^n.$

The Moser's formula for the division of the circle by chords problem revisited
The enumeration of the regions formed when circle is divided by secants drawn from points on the circle is one of the examples where the inductive reasoning fails as was pointed out by Leo Moser in the Mathematical Miscellany in 1949. The formula that gives the right number of regions can be deduced by combinatorics reasoning using the Euler's planar graph formula, etc. My contribution in the present work is to reformulate and solve such problem in terms of a fourth order difference equation and to obtain the formula proposed by Leo Moser.

The asymptotic volume of diagonal subpolytopes of symmetric stochastic matrices
The asymptotic volume of the polytope of symmetric stochastic matrices can be determined by asymptotic enumeration techniques as in the case of the Birkhoff polytope. These methods can be extended to polytopes of symmetric stochastic matrices with given diagonal, if this diagonal varies not too wildly. To this end, the asymptotic number of symmetric matrices with natural entries, zero diagonal and varying row sums is determined and a third order correction factor to this is examined.

Refined Enumeration of Corners in Tree-like Tableaux
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (September 26, 2017) dmtcs:3683 • View PublicationBIB
Tree-like tableaux are certain fillings of Ferrers diagrams originally introduced by Aval et al., which are in simple bijections with permutation tableaux coming from Postnikov's study of totally nonnegative Grassmanian and alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. In this paper, we confirm two conjectures of Gao et al. on the refined enumeration of non-occupied corners in tree-like tableaux and symmetric tree-like tableaux via intermediate structures of alternative tableaux, linked partitions, type $B$ alternative tableaux and type $B$ linked partitions.

Enumeration of Graphs and the Characteristic Polynomial of the Hyperplane Arrangements $\mathcal{J}_n$
We give a complete formula for the characteristic polynomial of hyperplane arrangements $\mathcal J_n$ consisting of the hyperplanes $x_i+x_j=1$, $x_k=0$, $x_l=1$, $ 1\leq i, j, k, l\leq n$. The formula is obtained by associating hyperplane arrangements with graphs, and then enumerating central graphs via generating functions for the number of bipartite graphs of given order, size and number of connected components.
Counting Arithmetical Structures on Paths and Cycles
Published in Discrete Math. 341 (2018), no. 10, 2949-2963 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite, simple, connected graph. An arithmetical structure on $G$ is a pair of positive integer vectors $\mathbf{d},\mathbf{r}$ such that $(\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A)\mathbf{r}=0$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. We investigate the combinatorics of arithmetical structures on path and cycle graphs, as well as the associated critical groups (the cokernels of the matrices $(\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A)$). For paths, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the Catalan numbers, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to ballot sequences. For cycles, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the binomial coefficients $\binom{2n-1}{n-1}$, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to multisets. In addition, we determine the critical groups for all arithmetical structures on paths and cycles.

Generation of Union Closed Sets and Moore families
In this article we will describe an algorithm to constructively enumerate non-isomorphic Union closed Sets and Moore sets. We confirm the number of isomorphism classes of Union closed Sets and Moore sets on n<=6 elements presented by other authors and give the number of isomorphism classes of Union closed Sets and Moore sets on 7 elements. Due to the enormous growth of the number of isomorphism classes it seems unlikely that constructive enumeration for 8 or more elements will be possible in the foreseeable future.

On short cycle enumeration in biregular bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A number of recent works have used a variety of combinatorial constructions to derive Tanner graphs for LDPC codes and some of these have been shown to perform well in terms of their probability of error curves and error floors. Such graphs are bipartite and many of these constructions yield biregular graphs where the degree of left vertices is a constant $c+1$ and that of the right vertices is a constant $d+1$. Such graphs are termed $(c+1,d+1)$ biregular bipartite graphs here. One property of interest in such work is the girth of the graph and the number of short cycles in the graph, cycles of length either the girth or slightly larger. Such numbers have been shown to be related to the error floor of the probability of error curve of the related LDPC code. Using known results of graph theory, it is shown how the girth and the number of cycles of length equal to the girth may be computed for these $(c+1,d+1)$ biregular bipartite graphs knowing only the parameters $c$ and $d$ and the numbers of left and right vertices. While numerous algorithms to determine the number of short cycles in arbitrary graphs exist, the reduction of the problem from an algorithm to a computation for these biregular bipartite graphs is of interest.
On xD-Generalizations of Stirling Numbers and Lah Numbers via Graphs and Rooks
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the generalizations of the Stirling numbers of both kinds and the Lah numbers in association with the normal order problem in the Weyl algebra $W=\langle x,D|Dx-xD=1\rangle$. Any word $ω\in W$ with $m$ $x$'s and $n$ $D$'s can be expressed in the normally ordered form $ω=x^{m-n}\sum_{k\ge 0} {ω\brace {k}} x^{k}D^{k}$, where ${ω\brace {k}}$ is known as the Stirling number of the second kind for the word $ω$. This study considers the expansions of restricted words $ω$ in $W$ over the sequences $\{(xD)^{k}\}_{k\ge 0}$ and $\{xD^{k}x^{k-1}\}_{k\ge 0}$. Interestingly, the coefficients in individual expansions turn out to be generalizations of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers. The coefficients will be determined through enumerations of some combinatorial structures linked to the words $ω$, involving decreasing forest decompositions of quasi-threshold graphs and non-attacking rook placements on Ferrers boards. Extended to $q$-analogues, weighted refinements of the combinatorial interpretations are also investigated for words in the $q$-deformed Weyl algebra.

Enumeration of Fuss-Schröder paths
In this paper we enumerate the number of $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$. Y. Park and S. Kim studied small Schröder paths with type $λ$. Generalizing the results to small $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths with type $λ$, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the number of small $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$ by using Chung-Feller style. We also give two sets of sparse noncrossing partitions of $[2(k + 1)n + 1]$ and $[2(k + 1)n + 2]$ which are in bijection with the set of all small and large, respectively, $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$.
Length enumeration of fully commutative elements in finite and affine Coxeter groups
Published in J. Algebra, 513 (2018) 466-515 • View PublicationBIB
An element w of a Coxeter group W is said to be fully commutative, if any reduced expression of w can be obtained from any other by transposing adjacent pairs of generators. These elements were described in 1996 by Stembridge in the case of finite irreducible groups, and more recently by Biagioli, Jouhet and Nadeau (BJN) in the affine cases. We focus here on the length enumeration of these elements. Using a recursive description, BJN established for the associated generating functions systems of non-linear q-equations. Here, we show that an alternative recursive description leads to explicit expressions for these generating functions.
The boundary length and point spectrum enumeration of partial chord diagrams using cut and join recursion
Published in Trav. Math. 25 (2017) 213 • Search Publication
We introduce the boundary length and point spectrum, as a joint generalization of the boundary length spectrum and boundary point spectrum in arXiv:1307.0967. We establish by cut-and-join methods that the number of partial chord diagrams filtered by the boundary length and point spectrum satisfies a recursion relation, which combined with an initial condition determines these numbers uniquely. This recursion relation is equivalent to a second order, non-linear, algebraic partial differential equation for the generating function of the numbers of partial chord diagrams filtered by the boundary length and point spectrum.
Enumeration of chord diagrams via topological recursion and quantum curve techniques
Published in Trav. Math. 25 (2017) 285 • Search Publication
In this paper we consider the enumeration of orientable and non-orientable chord diagrams. We show that this enumeration is encoded in appropriate expectation values of the $β$-deformed Gaussian and RNA matrix models. We evaluate these expectation values by means of the $β$-deformed topological recursion, and - independently - using properties of quantum curves. We show that both these methods provide efficient and systematic algorithms for counting of chord diagrams with a given genus, number of backbones and number of chords.
Partial chord diagrams and matrix models
Published in Trav. Math. 25 (2017) 233 • Search Publication
In this article, the enumeration of partial chord diagrams is discussed via matrix model techniques. In addition to the basic data such as the number of backbones and chords, we also consider the Euler characteristic, the backbone spectrum, the boundary point spectrum, and the boundary length spectrum. Furthermore, we consider the boundary length and point spectrum that unifies the last two types of spectra. We introduce matrix models that encode generating functions of partial chord diagrams filtered by each of these spectra. Using these matrix models, we derive partial differential equations - obtained independently by cut-and-join arguments in an earlier work - for the corresponding generating functions.

Primitive transformation shift registers over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of existence and enumeration of primitive TSRs of order n over any finite field. Here we prove the existence of primitive TSRs of order two over finite fields of characteristic two and establish an equivalence between primitive TSRs and primitive polynomials of special form. A conjecture regarding the existence of these special type of primitive polynomials is submitted by us along with some experimental verification. Further we have attempted to enumerate primitive TSRs of order two over finite fields of characteristic two. Finally we give a general search algorithm for primitive TSRs of odd order over any finite field and in particular of order two over fields of characteristic two.
