Topology of Cut Complexes of Graphs
Published in SIAM J. on Discrete Mathematics,Vol. 38 (2), 1630--1675 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We define the $k$-cut complex of a graph $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$ to be the simplicial complex whose facets are the complements of sets of size $k$ in $V(G)$ inducing disconnected subgraphs of $G$. This generalizes the Alexander dual of a graph complex studied by Fröberg (1990), and Eagon and Reiner (1998). We describe the effect of various graph operations on the cut complex, and study its shellability, homotopy type and homology for various families of graphs, including trees, cycles, complete multipartite graphs, and the prism $K_n \times K_2$, using techniques from algebraic topology, discrete Morse theory and equivariant poset topology.
Fast computation of permutation equivariant layers with the partition algebra
Linear neural network layers that are either equivariant or invariant to permutations of their inputs form core building blocks of modern deep learning architectures. Examples include the layers of DeepSets, as well as linear layers occurring in attention blocks of transformers and some graph neural networks. The space of permutation equivariant linear layers can be identified as the invariant subspace of a certain symmetric group representation, and recent work parameterized this space by exhibiting a basis whose vectors are sums over orbits of standard basis elements with respect to the symmetric group action. A parameterization opens up the possibility of learning the weights of permutation equivariant linear layers via gradient descent. The space of permutation equivariant linear layers is a generalization of the partition algebra, an object first discovered in statistical physics with deep connections to the representation theory of the symmetric group, and the basis described above generalizes the so-called orbit basis of the partition algebra. We exhibit an alternative basis, generalizing the diagram basis of the partition algebra, with computational benefits stemming from the fact that the tensors making up the basis are low rank in the sense that they naturally factorize into Kronecker products. Just as multiplication by a rank one matrix is far less expensive than multiplication by an arbitrary matrix, multiplication with these low rank tensors is far less expensive than multiplication with elements of the orbit basis. Finally, we describe an algorithm implementing multiplication with these basis elements.

Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids
Published in Comm. Amer. Math. Soc. 4 (2024), 64-79 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of the matroid arising from the braid arrangement of type $\mathrm{A}_{n-1}$, which gives an interpretation of the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of the reciprocal plane of the braid arrangement. Moreover, we prove an equivariant version of this result. The key combinatorial object is a class of matroids arising from series-parallel networks. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Elias, Proudfoot, and Wakefield on the top coefficient of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids, and we provide explicit generating functions for their Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials.

Ribbon Schur Functors
Published in Alg. Number Th. 19 (2025) 771-834 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a generalization of the classical notion of a Schur functor associated to a ribbon diagram. These functors are defined with respect to an arbitrary algebra, and in the case that the underlying algebra is the symmetric/exterior algebra, we recover the classical definition of Schur/Weyl functors, respectively. In general, we construct a family of 3-term complexes categorifying the classical concatenation/near-concatenation identity for symmetric functions, and one of our main results is that the exactness of these 3-term complexes is equivalent to the Koszul property of the underlying algebra $A$. We further generalize these ribbon Schur functors to the notion of a multi-Schur functor and construct a canonical filtration of these objects whose associated graded pieces are described explicitly; one consequence of this filtration is a complete equivariant description of the syzygies of arbitrary Segre products of Koszul modules over the Segre product of Koszul algebras. Further applications to the equivariant structure of derived invariants, symmetric function identities, and Koszulness of certain classes of modules are explored at the end, along with a characteristic-free computation of the regularity of a Schur functor applied to the tautological subbundle on projective space.

Strong equivariant positivity for homogeneous varieties and back-stable coproduct coefficients
Using a transversality argument, we demonstrate the positivity of certain coefficients in the equivariant cohomology and K-theory of a generalized flag manifold. This strengthens earlier equivariant positivity theorems (of Graham and Anderson-Griffeth-Miller) by further constraining the roots which can appear in these coefficients. As an application, we deduce that structure constants for comultiplication in the equivariant K-theory of an infinite flag manifold exhibit an unusual positivity property, establishing conjectures of Lam-Lee-Shimozono. Along the way, we present alternative formulas for the back stable Grothendieck polynomials defined by those authors, as well as a new method for computing the coproduct coefficients.
Equivariant Trees and Partition Complexes
We introduce two definitions of $G$-equivariant partitions of a finite $G$-set, both of which yield $G$-equivariant partition complexes. By considering suitable notions of equivariant trees, we show that $G$-equivariant partitions and $G$-trees are $G$-homotopy equivalent, generalizing existing results for the non-equivariant setting. Along the way, we develop equivariant versions of Quillen's Theorems A and B, which are of independent interest.

A topological version of Hedetniemi's conjecture for equivariant spaces
Published in Combinatorica 44, 441-452 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
A topological version of the famous Hedetniemi conjecture says: The mapping index of the Cartesian product of two $\mathbb Z/2$-spaces is equal to the minimum of their $\mathbb Z/2$-indexes. The main purpose of this article is to study the topological version of the Hedetniemi conjecture for $G$-spaces. Indeed, we show that the topological Hedetniemi conjecture cannot be valid for general pairs of $G$-spaces. More precisely, we show that this conjecture can possibly survive if the group $G$ is either a cyclic $p$-group or a generalized quaternion group whose size is a power of 2.

Cooperative envy-free division
Relying on configuration spaces and equivariant topology, we study a general "cooperative envy-free division problem". A group of players want to cut a "cake" $I=[0,1]$ and divide among themselves the pieces in an envy-free manner. Once the cake is cut and served in plates on a round table (at most one piece per plate), each player makes her choice by pointing at one (or several) plates she prefers. The novelty is that her choice may depend on the whole "allocation configuration". In particular, a player may choose an empty plate (possibly preferring one of the empty plates over the other), and take into account not only the content of her preferred plate, but also the content of the neighbouring plates. We show that if the number of players is a prime power, in this setting an envy-free division exists under standard assumptions that the preferences are closed.

Hecke algebra action on twisted motivic Chern classes and K-theoretic stable envelopes
Let $G$ be a linear semisimple algebraic group and $B$ its Borel subgroup. Let $\mathbb{T}\subset B$ be the maximal torus. We study the inductive construction of Bott-Samelson varieties to obtain recursive formulas for the twisted motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in $G/B$. To this end we introduce two families of operators acting on the equivariant K-theory $K_\mathbb{T}(G/B)[y]$, the right and left Demazure-Lusztig operators depending on a parameter. The twisted motivic Chern classes coincide (up to normalization) with the K-theoretic stable envelopes. Our results imply wall-crossing formulas for a change of the weight chamber and slope parameters. The right and left operators generate a twisted double Hecke algebra. We show that in the type $A$ this algebra acts on the Laurent polynomials. This action is a natural lift of the action on $K_\mathbb{T}(G/B)[y]$ with respect to the Kirwan map. We show that the left and right twisted Demazure-Lusztig operators provide a recursion for twisted motivic Chern classes of matrix Schubert varieties.

Equivariant oriented homology of the affine Grassmannian
We generalize the property of small-torus equivariant K-homology of the affine Grassmannian to general oriented (co)homology theory in the sense of Levine and Morel. The main tool we use is the formal affine Demazure algebra associated to the affine root system. More precisely, we prove that the small-torus equivariant oriented cohomology of the affine Grassmannian satisfies the GKM condition. We also show that its dual, the small-torus equivariant homology, is isomorphic to the centralizer of the equivariant oriented cohomology of a point in the the formal affine Demazure algebra.

How Jellyfish Characterise Alternating Group Equivariant Neural Networks
We provide a full characterisation of all of the possible alternating group ($A_n$) equivariant neural networks whose layers are some tensor power of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In particular, we find a basis of matrices for the learnable, linear, $A_n$-equivariant layer functions between such tensor power spaces in the standard basis of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We also describe how our approach generalises to the construction of neural networks that are equivariant to local symmetries.

A geometric realization of Catalan functions
We construct a smooth projective variety $\mathscr X_Ψ$ that compactifies an equivariant vector subbundle of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety for $\mathrm{GL}(n)$, determined by a root ideal $Ψ$. A natural family of line bundles on $\mathscr X_Ψ$ yields the Catalan functions -- symmetric functions introduced by Chen--Haiman and studied further by Blasiak--Morse--Pun--Summers. By analyzing the geometry of $\mathscr X_Ψ$, we prove the vanishing conjecture of Chen--Haiman, confirm the tame case of the vanishing conjecture of Blasiak--Morse--Pun, and establish the monotonicity conjectures of Shimozono--Weyman.
Charmed roots and the Kroweras complement
Although both noncrossing partitions and nonnesting partitions are uniformly enumerated for Weyl groups, the exact relationship between these two sets of combinatorial objects remains frustratingly mysterious. In this paper, we give a precise combinatorial answer in the case of the symmetric group: for any standard Coxeter element, we construct an equivariant bijection between noncrossing partitions under the Kreweras complement and nonnesting partitions under a Coxeter-theoretically natural cyclic action we call the Kroweras complement. Our equivariant bijection is the unique bijection that is both equivariant and support-preserving, and is built using local rules depending on a new definition of charmed roots. Charmed roots are determined by the choice of Coxeter element -- in the special case of the linear Coxeter element $(1, 2, \dots, n)$, we recover one of the standard bijections between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions.
From motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells to their Hirzebruch and CSM classes
Published in A glimpse into geometric representation theory, 1-52, Contemp. Math., 804, Amer. Math. Soc., [Providence], RI, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
The equivariant motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell in a `complete' flag manifold $X=G/B$ is an element in the equivariant K theory ring of $X$ to which one adjoins a formal parameter $y$. In this paper we prove several `folklore results' about the motivic Chern classes, including finding specializations at $y=-1$ and $y=0$; the coefficient of the top power of $y$; how to obtain Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) classes as leading terms of motivic classes; divisibility properties of the Schubert expansion of motivic Chern classes. We collect several conjectures about the positivity, unimodality, and log concavity of CSM and motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells, including a conjectural positivity of structure constants of the multiplication of Poincaré duals of CSM classes. In addition, we prove a `star duality' for the motivic Chern classes. We utilize the motivic Chern transformation to define two equivariant variants of the Hirzebruch transformation, which appear naturally in the Grothendieck-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formalism. We utilize the Demazure-Lusztig recursions from the motivic Chern class theory to find similar recursions giving the Hirzebruch classes of Schubert cells, their Poincar{é} duals, and their Segre versions. We explain the functoriality properties needed to extend the results to `partial' flag manifolds $G/P$.

A combinatorial description of stability for toric vector bundles
The aim of this paper is to discuss a combinatorial characterisation of stability for toric vector bundles (or equivariant reflexive sheaves) in the terms of their parliaments of polytopes, a generalization of moment polytopes for toric vector bundles by Di Rocco, Jabbusch and Smith. We also define subparliaments of polytopes and identify them with parliaments of equivariant subbundles.

Rowmotion on 321-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a natural definition of rowmotion for $321$-avoiding permutations, by translating, through bijections involving Dyck paths and the Lalanne--Kreweras involution, the analogous notion for antichains of the positive root poset of type $A$. We prove that some permutation statistics, such as the number of fixed points, are homomesic under rowmotion, meaning that they have a constant average over its orbits. Our setting also provides a more natural description of the celebrated Armstrong--Stump--Thomas equivariant bijection between antichains and non-crossing matchings in types $A$ and $B$, by showing that it is equivalent to the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence on $321$-avoiding permutations permutations.

Brauer's Group Equivariant Neural Networks
We provide a full characterisation of all of the possible group equivariant neural networks whose layers are some tensor power of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for three symmetry groups that are missing from the machine learning literature: $O(n)$, the orthogonal group; $SO(n)$, the special orthogonal group; and $Sp(n)$, the symplectic group. In particular, we find a spanning set of matrices for the learnable, linear, equivariant layer functions between such tensor power spaces in the standard basis of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the group is $O(n)$ or $SO(n)$, and in the symplectic basis of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the group is $Sp(n)$.

Connecting Permutation Equivariant Neural Networks and Partition Diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Permutation equivariant neural networks are often constructed using tensor powers of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ as their layer spaces. We show that all of the weight matrices that appear in these neural networks can be obtained from Schur-Weyl duality between the symmetric group and the partition algebra. In particular, we adapt Schur-Weyl duality to derive a simple, diagrammatic method for calculating the weight matrices themselves.

Stembridge codes and Chow rings
It is well known that the Eulerian polynomial is the Hilbert series of the cohomology of the permutohedral variety. We answer a question of Stembridge on finding a geometric explanation of the \emph{permutation representation} this cohomology carries. Our explanation involves an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant bijection between a basis for the Chow ring of the Boolean matroid and codes introduced by Stembridge. There are analogous results for the stellohedral variety. We provide a geometric explanation of the permutation representation that its cohomology carries. This involves the augmented Chow ring of a matroid introduced by Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. Along the way, we also obtain some new results on augmented Chow rings.

Pieri and Murnaghan--Nakayama type Rules for Chern classes of Schubert Cells
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop Pieri type as well as Murnaghan--Nakayama type formulas for equivariant Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes of Schubert cells in the classical flag variety. These formulas include as special cases many previously known multiplication formulas for Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes or Schubert classes. We apply the equivariant Murnaghan--Nakayama formula to the enumeration of rim hook tableaux.
