P-flag spaces and incidence stratifications
Published in Selecta Mathematica, 27, 72 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
For any finite poset P we introduce a homogeneous space as a quotient of the general linear group with the incidence group of P. When P is a chain this quotient is a flag variety; for the trivial poset our construction gives a variety recently introduced in [20]. Moreover we provide decompositions for any set in a projective space, induced by the action of the incidence group of a suitable poset. In the classical cases of Grassmannians and flag varieties we recover, depending on the choice of the poset, the partition into Schubert cells and the matroid strata. Our general framework produces, for the homogeneous spaces corresponding to the trivial posets, a stratification by parking functions.

On the coproduct in affine Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.

On some properties of symplectic Grothendieck polynomials
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 225 (2021), 106463 • View PublicationBIB
Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials representing certain "Grassmannian" orbit closures.

K-theory formulas for orthogonal and symplectic orbit closures
Published in Adv. Math. 372 (2020), 107299 • View PublicationBIB
The complex orthogonal and symplectic groups both act on the complete flag variety with finitely many orbits. We study two families of polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong representing the $K$-theory classes of the closures of these orbits. Our polynomials are analogous to the Grothendieck polynomials representing $K$-classes of Schubert varieties, and we show that like Grothendieck polynomials, they are uniquely characterized among all polynomials representing the relevant classes by a certain stability property. We show that the same polynomials represent the equivariant $K$-classes of symmetric and skew-symmetric analogues of Knutson and Miller's matrix Schubert varieties. We derive explicit expressions for these polynomials in special cases, including a Pfaffian formula relying on a more general degeneracy locus formula of Anderson. Finally, we show that taking an appropriate limit of our representatives recovers the $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse.

Positivity determines the quantum cohomology of Grassmannians
We prove that if X is a Grassmannian of type A, then the Schubert basis of the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH(X) is the only homogeneous deformation of the Schubert basis of the ordinary cohomology ring of X that multiplies with non-negative structure constants. This implies that the (three point, genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariants of X are uniquely determined by Witten's presentation of QH(X) and the fact that they are non-negative. We conjecture that the same is true for any flag variety X = G/P of simply laced Lie type. For the variety GL(n)/B of complete flags, this conjecture is equivalent to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov's conjecture that the quantum Schubert polynomials of type A are uniquely determined by positivity properties. Our proof for Grassmannians answers a question of Fulton.

A generalization of Steinberg theory and an exotic moment map
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices IMRN (2022), no. 1, 1-62 • Search Publication
For a reductive group $G$, Steinberg established a map from the Weyl group to the set of nilpotent $G$-orbits by using moment maps on double flag varieties. In particular, in the case of the general linear group, it provides a geometric interpretation of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence between permutations and pairs of standard tableaux of the same shape. We extend Steinberg's approach to the case of a symmetric pair $(G,K)$ to obtain two different maps, namely a \emph{generalized Steinberg map} and an \emph{exotic moment map}. Although the framework is general, in this paper we focus on the pair $(G,K) = (\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{C}), \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C}) \times \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C}))$. Then the generalized Steinberg map is a map from \emph{partial} permutations to the pairs of nilpotent orbits in $ \mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C}) $. It involves a generalization of the classical Robinson--Schensted correspondence to the case of partial permutations. The other map, the exotic moment map, establishes a combinatorial map from the set of partial permutations to that of signed Young diagrams, i.e., the set of nilpotent $K$-orbits in the Cartan space $(\mathrm{Lie}(G)/\mathrm{Lie}(K))^* $. We explain the geometric background of the theory and combinatorial algorithms which produce the above mentioned maps.

Toric degenerations of flag varieties from matching field tableaux
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, 2020 • Search Publication
We present families of tableaux which interpolate between the classical semi-standard Young tableaux and matching field tableaux. Algebraically, this corresponds to SAGBI bases of Plücker algebras. We show that each such family of tableaux leads to a toric ideal, that can be realized as initial of the Plücker ideal, hence a toric degeneration for the flag variety.

Regularity theorem for totally nonnegative flag varieties
Published in J. Amer. Math. Soc. 35 (2022), no. 2, 513-579 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety $G/P$ (in the sense of Lusztig) is a regular CW complex, confirming a conjecture of Williams. In particular, the closure of each positroid cell inside the totally nonnegative Grassmannian is homeomorphic to a ball, confirming a conjecture of Postnikov.

Spanning subspace configurations
A {\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.
Euler characteristics in the quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Along the way, we provide a description of the smallest degree $d$ in terms of its projections to flag varieties defined by maximal parabolic subgroups.

Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties. We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

Cluster structures in Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we explain how the coordinate ring of each (open) Schubert variety in the Grassmannian can be identified with a cluster algebra, whose combinatorial structure is encoded using (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This result generalizes a theorem of Scott (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian, and proves a folklore conjecture for Schubert varieties that has been believed by experts since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until Müller-Speyer explicitly conjectured it (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of Leclerc (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety can be identified with cluster algebras. Our proof also uses a construction of Karpman (Karpman 2016) to build plabic graphs associated to reduced expressions. We additionally generalize our result to the setting of skew Schubert varieties; the latter result uses generalized plabic graphs, i.e. plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.
Linear degenerations of flag varieties: partial flags, defining equations, and group actions
We continue, generalize and expand our study of linear degenerations of flag varieties from [G. Cerulli Irelli, X. Fang, E. Feigin, G. Fourier, M. Reineke, Math. Z. 287 (2017), no. 1-2, 615-654]. We realize partial flag varieties as quiver Grassmannians for equi-oriented type A quivers and construct linear degenerations by varying the corresponding quiver representation. We prove that there exists the deepest flat degeneration and the deepest flat irreducible degeneration: the former is the partial analogue of the mf-degenerate flag variety and the latter coincides with the partial PBW-degenerate flag variety. We compute the generating function of the number of orbits in the flat irreducible locus and study the natural family of line bundles on the degenerations from the flat irreducible locus. We also describe explicitly the reduced scheme structure on these degenerations and conjecture that similar results hold for the whole flat locus. Finally, we prove an analogue of the Borel-Weil theorem for the flat irreducible locus.

A symplectic refinement of shifted Hecke insertion
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 173 (2020), 105216 • View PublicationBIB
Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong defined Hecke insertion to formulate a combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_π$ indexed by permutations in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$ indexed by partitions. Patrias and Pylyavskyy introduced a shifted analogue of Hecke insertion whose natural domain is the set of maximal chains in a weak order on orbit closures of the orthogonal group acting on the complete flag variety. We construct a generalization of shifted Hecke insertion for maximal chains in an analogous weak order on orbit closures of the symplectic group. As an application, we identify a combinatorial rule for the expansion of "orthogonal" and "symplectic" shifted analogues of $G_π$ in Ikeda and Naruse's basis of $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions.
The volume polynomial of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety $\mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ arising naturally in the intersection of geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics. Recent results of Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda-Murai-Sato and Abe-DeDieu-Galetto-Harada relate the volume polynomials of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties to the volume polynomial of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope $\mathrm{GZ}(λ)$ for $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$. The main results of this manuscript use and generalize tools developed by Anderson-Tymoczko, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin, and Postnikov, in order to derive an explicit formula for the volume polynomials of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in terms of the volumes of certain faces of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope, and also exhibit a manifestly positive, combinatorial formula for their coefficients with respect to the basis of monomials in the $α_i := λ_i-λ_{i+1}$. In addition, motivated by these considerations, we carefully analyze the special case of the permutohedral variety, which is also known as the toric variety associated to Weyl chambers. In this case, we obtain an explicit decomposition of the permutohedron (the moment map image of the permutohedral variety) into combinatorial $(n-1)$-cubes, and also give a geometric interpretation of this decomposition by expressing the cohomology class of the permutohedral variety in $\mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ as a sum of the cohomology classes of a certain set of Richardson varieties.
Combinatorics of cluster structures in Schubert varieties
We give an explicit combinatorial description of cluster structures in Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian in terms of (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This description is a natural generalization of the description given by (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian and has been believed by experts essentially since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety admit cluster structures. We also adapt a construction of (Karpman 2016) to build cluster seeds associated to reduced expressions. Further, we explicitly describe cluster structures in skew Schubert varieties using plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.
$k$-Schur expansions of Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.
Flag matroids: algebra and geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
Matroids are ubiquitous in modern combinatorics. As discovered by Gelfand, Goresky, MacPherson and Serganova there is a beautiful connection between matroid theory and the geometry of Grassmannians: realizable matroids correspond to torus orbits in Grassmannians. Further, as observed by Fink and Speyer general matroids correspond to classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. This yields in particular a geometric description of the Tutte polynomial. In this review we describe all these constructions in detail, and moreover we generalise some of them to polymatroids. More precisely, we study the class of flag matroids and their relations to flag varieties. In this way, we obtain an analogue of the Tutte polynomial for flag matroids.

Polyhedral realizations of crystal bases and convex-geometric Demazure operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main object in this paper is a certain rational convex polytope whose lattice points give a polyhedral realization of a highest weight crystal basis. This is also identical to a Newton-Okounkov body of a flag variety, and it gives a toric degeneration. In this paper, we prove that a specific class of this polytope is given by Kiritchenko's Demazure operators on polytopes. This implies that polytopes in this class are all lattice polytopes. As an application, we give a sufficient condition for the corresponding toric variety to be Gorenstein Fano.

Diagonal Orbits in a Type A Double Flag Variety of Complexity One
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue our study of the inclusion posets of diagonal $SL(n)$-orbit closures in a product of two partial flag varieties. We prove that, if the diagonal action is of complexity one, then the poset is isomorphic to one of the 28 posets that we determine explicitly. Furthermore, our computations show that the number of diagonal $SL(n)$-orbits in any of these posets is at most 10 for any positive integer $n$. This is in contrast with the complexity 0 case, where, in some cases, the resulting posets attain arbitrary heights.
