The algebraic geometry of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials

Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials are a combinatorial generalization of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of for Coxeter groups that include g-polynomials of polytopes and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids. In the cases of Weyl groups, rational polytopes, and realizable matroids, one can count points over finite fields on flag varieties, toric varieties, or reciprocal planes to obtain cohomological interpretations of these polynomials. We survey these results and unite them under a single geometric framework.
A flag variety for the Delta Conjecture

The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson predicts the monomial expansion of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$, where $k \leq n$ are positive integers and $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}$ is a Macdonald eigenoperator. When $k = n$, the specialization $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$ is the Frobenius image of the graded $S_n$-module afforded by the cohomology ring of the {\em flag variety} consisting of complete flags in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We define and study a variety $X_{n,k}$ which carries an action of $S_n$ whose cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ has Frobenius image given by $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$, up to a minor twist. The variety $X_{n,k}$ has a cellular decomposition with cells $C_w$ indexed by length $n$ words $w = w_1 \dots w_n$ in the alphabet $\{1, 2, \dots, k\}$ in which each letter appears at least once. When $k = n$, the variety $X_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to the flag variety. We give a presentation for the cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ and describe polynomial representatives for the classes $[ \overline{C}_w]$ of the closures of the cells $C_w$; these representatives generalize the classical Schubert polynomials.

We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology of weighted partial flag orbifolds ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$ of type $A$. We establish counterparts of several results known for the partial flag variety that collectively constitute what we refer to as ``Schubert Calculus on ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$''. For the weighed Schubert classes in ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$, we give the Chevalley's formula. In addition, we define the weighted analogue of double Schubert polynomials and give the corresponding Chevalley--Monk's formula.
The Containment Poset of Type $A$ Hessenberg Varieties

Flag varieties are well-known algebraic varieties with many important geometric, combinatorial, and representation theoretic properties. A Hessenberg variety is a subvariety of a flag variety identified by two parameters: an element $X$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a Hessenberg subspace $H\subseteq \mathfrak{g}$. This paper considers when two Hessenberg spaces define the same Hessenberg variety when paired with $X$. To answer this question we present the containment poset $\mathcal{P}_X$ of type $A$ Hessenberg varieties with a fixed first parameter $X$ and prove directly that if $X$ is not a multiple of the element $\bf 1$ then the Hessenberg spaces containing the Borel subalgebra determine distinct Hessenberg varieties. Lastly we give a natural involution on $\mathcal{P}_X$ that induces a homeomorphism of varieties and prove additional properties of $\mathcal{P}_X$ when $X$ is a regular nilpotent element.
Semi-infinite Plücker relations and Weyl modules

The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we write down the semi-infinite Plücker relations, describing the Drinfeld-Plücker embedding of the (formal version of) semi-infinite flag varieties in type A. Second, we study the homogeneous coordinate ring, i.e. the quotient by the ideal generated by the semi-infinite Plücker relations. We establish the isomorphism with the algebra of dual global Weyl modules and derive a new character formula.
Walk algebras, distinguished subexpressions, and point counting in Kac-Moody flag varieties

We study walk algebras and Hecke algebras for Kac-Moody root systems. Each choice of orientation for the set of real roots gives rise to a corresponding "oriented" basis for each of these algebras. We show that the notion of distinguished subexpression naturally arises when studying the transition matrix between oriented bases. We then relate these notions to the geometry of Kac-Moody flag varieties and Bott-Samelson varieties. In particular, we show that the number of points over a finite field in certain intersections of these varieties is given by change of basis coefficients between oriented bases of the Hecke algebra. Using these results we give streamlined derivations of Deodhar's formula for $R$-polynomials and point-counting formulas for specializations of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_λ(\mathsf{q},t)$ at $\mathsf{q}=0,\infty$.

The Peterson isomorphism relates the homology of the affine Grassmannian to the quantum cohomology of any flag variety. In the case of a partial flag, Peterson's map is only a surjection, and one needs to quotient by a suitable ideal on the affine side to map isomorphically onto the quantum cohomology. We provide a detailed exposition of this parabolic Peterson isomorphism in the case of the Grassmannian of m-planes in complex n-space, including an explicit recipe for doing quantum Schubert calculus in terms of the appropriate subset of non-commutative k-Schur functions. As an application, we recast Postnikov's affine approach to the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian as a consequence of parabolic Peterson by showing that the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra arises naturally when forming the requisite quotient of the homology of the affine Grassmannian.

In this paper we address two of the major foundational questions in the theory of matroids over rings. First, we provide a cryptomorphic axiomatisation, by introducing an analogue of the base polytope for matroids. Second, we describe a parameter space for matroids over a valuation ring, which turns out to be a tropical version of the Bott-Samelson varieties for the full flag variety. Thus a matroid over a valuation ring is a sequence of flags of tropical linear spaces a.k.a. valuated matroids.

The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.
Enumerating the symplectic Dellac configurations
Fang and Fourier defined the symplectic Dellac configurations in order to parametrize the torus fixed points of the symplectic degenerated flag varieties, and conjectured that their numbers are the elements of a sequence of integers (1, 2, 10, 98, 1594, ...) which appears in the study by Randrianarivony and Zeng of the median Euler numbers. In this paper, we prove the conjecture by considering a combinatorial interpretation of these integers in terms of the surjective pistols (which form a well-known combinatorial model of the Genocchi numbers), and constructing an appropriate surjection from the symplectic Dellac configurations to the surjective pistols.
A conjectural Peterson isomorphism in K-theory

We state a precise conjectural isomorphism between localizations of the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of a flag variety and the equivariant K-homology ring of the affine Grassmannian, in particular relating their Schubert bases and structure constants. This generalizes Peterson's isomorphism in (co)homology. We prove a formula for the Pontryagin structure constants in the K-homology ring, and we use it to check our conjecture in few situations.
The mirror conjecture for minuscule flag varieties

We prove Rietsch's mirror conjecture that the Dubrovin quantum connection for minuscule flag varieties is isomorphic to the character D-module of the Berenstein-Kazhdan geometric crystal. The idea is to recognize the quantum connection as Galois and the geometric crystal as automorphic. We reveal surprising relations with the works of Frenkel-Gross, Heinloth-Ngô-Yun, and Zhu on Kloosterman sheaves. The isomorphism comes from global rigidity results where Hecke eigensheaves are determined by their local ramification. As corollaries we obtain combinatorial identities for counts of rational curves and the Peterson variety presentation of the small quantum cohomology ring.
Peterson Isomorphism in $K$-theory and Relativistic Toda Lattice

The $K$-homology ring of the affine Grassmannian of $SL_n(C)$ was studied by Lam, Schilling, and Shimozono. It is realized as a certain concrete Hopf subring of the ring of symmetric functions. On the other hand, for the quantum $K$-theory of the flag variety $Fl_n$, Kirillov and Maeno provided a conjectural presentation based on the results obtained by Givental and Lee. We construct an explicit birational morphism between the spectrums of these two rings. Our method relies on Ruijsenaars's relativistic Toda lattice with unipotent initial condition. From this result, we obtain a $K$-theory analogue of the so-called Peterson isomorphism for (co)homology. We provide a conjecture on the detailed relationship between the Schubert bases, and, in particular, we determine the image of Lenart--Maeno's quantum Grothendieck polynomial associated with a Grassmannian permutation.
Positive Geometries and Canonical Forms

Recent years have seen a surprising connection between the physics of scattering amplitudes and a class of mathematical objects--the positive Grassmannian, positive loop Grassmannians, tree and loop Amplituhedra--which have been loosely referred to as "positive geometries". The connection between the geometry and physics is provided by a unique differential form canonically determined by the property of having logarithmic singularities (only) on all the boundaries of the space, with residues on each boundary given by the canonical form on that boundary. In this paper we initiate an exploration of "positive geometries" and "canonical forms" as objects of study in their own right in a more general mathematical setting. We give a precise definition of positive geometries and canonical forms, introduce general methods for finding forms for more complicated positive geometries from simpler ones, and present numerous examples of positive geometries in projective spaces, Grassmannians, and toric, cluster and flag varieties. We also illustrate a number of strategies for computing canonical forms which yield interesting representations for the forms associated with wide classes of positive geometries, ranging from the simplest Amplituhedra to new expressions for the volume of arbitrary convex polytopes.

Computing toric degenerations of flag varieties

We compute toric degenerations arising from the tropicalization of the full flag varieties $\mathcal{F}\ell_4$ and $\mathcal{F}\ell_5$ embedded in a product of Grassmannians. For $\mathcal{F}\ell_4$ and $\mathcal{F}\ell_5$ we compare toric degenerations arising from string polytopes and the FFLV polytope with those obtained from the tropicalization of the flag varieties. We also present a general procedure to find toric degenerations in the cases where the initial ideal arising from a cone of the tropicalization of a variety is not prime.
Smooth Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of type $\tilde{A}$

We show that every smooth Schubert variety of affine type $\tilde{A}$ is an iterated fibre bundle of Grassmannians, extending an analogous result by Ryan and Wolper for Schubert varieties of finite type $A$. As a consequence, we finish a conjecture of Billey-Crites that a Schubert variety in affine type $\tilde{A}$ is smooth if and only if the corresponding affine permutation avoids the patterns $4231$ and $3412$. Using this iterated fibre bundle structure, we compute the generating function for the number of smooth Schubert varieties of affine type $\tilde{A}$.

We prove an identity relating the product of two opposite Schubert varieties in the (equivariant) quantum K-theory ring of a cominuscule flag variety to the minimal degree of a rational curve connecting the Schubert varieties. We deduce that the sum of the structure constants associated to any product of Schubert classes is equal to one. Equivalently, the sheaf Euler characteristic map extends to a ring homomorphism defined on the quantum K-theory ring.
Cominuscule points and Schubert varieties

We introduce the notion of a cominuscule point in a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety for a semisimple group. We derive formulas expressing the Hilbert series and multiplicity of a Schubert variety at a cominuscule point in terms of the restrictions of classes in torus-equivariant K-theory and cohomology to that point, generalizing previously known formulas for flag varieties of cominuscule type. Thus, we can calculate Hilbert series and multiplicities in cases where these were previously unknown. The formulas for Schubert varieties are special cases of more general formulas valid at generalized cominuscule points of schemes with torus actions.
Hessenberg varieties of parabolic type

This paper studies the geometry and combinatorics of three interrelated varieties: Springer fibers, Steinberg varieties, and parabolic Hessenberg varieties. We prove that each parabolic Hessenberg variety is the pullback of a Steinberg variety under the projection of the flag variety to an appropriate partial flag variety and we give three applications of this result. The first application constructs an explicit paving of all Steinberg varieties in Lie type $A$ in terms of semistandard tableaux. As a result, we obtain an elementary proof of a theorem of Steinberg and Shimomura that the well-known Kostka numbers count the maximal-dimensional irreducible components of Steinberg varieties. The second application proves an open conjecture for certain parabolic Hessenberg varieties in Lie type A by showing that their Betti numbers equal those of a specific union of Schubert varieties. The third application proves that the irreducible components of parabolic Hessenberg varieties are in bijection with the irreducible components of the Steinberg variety. All three of these applications extend our geometric understanding of the three varieties at the heart of this paper, a full understanding of which is unknown even for Springer varieties, despite over forty years' worth of work.
