Generalization of the Macdonald formula for Hall-Littlewood polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Gaussent-Littelmann formula for Hall-Littlewood polynomials and we develop combinatorial tools to describe the formula in a purely combinatorial way for type A_n, B_n and C_n. This description is in terms of Young tableaux and arises from identifying one-skeleton galleries that appear in the Gaussent-Littelmann formula with Young tableaux. Furthermore, we show by using these tools that the Gaussent-Littelmann formula and the well-known Macdonald formula for Hall-Littlewood polynomials for type A_n are the same.

Skew quantum Murnaghan-Nakayama rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we extend recent results of Assaf and McNamara on skew Pieri rule and skew Murnaghan-Nakayama rule to a more general identity, which gives an elegant expansion of the product of a skew Schur function with a quantum power sum function in terms of skew Schur functions. We give two proofs, one completely bijective in the spirit of Assaf-McNamara's original proof, and one via Lam-Lauve-Sotille's skew Littlewood-Richardson rule. We end with some conjectures for skew rules for Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

Vanishing integrals for Hall-Littlewood polynomials
Published in Transformation Groups: Volume 17, Issue 1 (2012), Page 259-302 • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that if one integrates a Schur function indexed by a partition $λ$ over the symplectic (resp. orthogonal) group, the integral vanishes unless all parts of $λ$ have even multiplicity (resp. all parts of $λ$ are even). In a recent paper of Rains and Vazirani, Macdonald polynomial generalizations of these identities and several others were developed and proved using Hecke algebra techniques. However at $q=0$ (the Hall-Littlewood level), these approaches do not work, although one can obtain the results by taking the appropriate limit. In this paper, we develop a direct approach for dealing with this special case. This technique allows us to prove some identities that were not amenable to the Hecke algebra approach, as well as to explicitly control the nonzero values. Moreover, we are able to generalize some of the identities by introducing extra parameters. This leads us to a finite-dimensional analog of a recent result of Warnaar, which uses the Rogers-Szegö polynomials to unify some existing summation type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions.

A Pieri formula for Macdonald's spherical functions and polynomials
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, Volume 269, Issue 1 (2011), Page 281-292 • View PublicationBIB
We present explicit Pieri formulas for Macdonald's spherical functions (or generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials associated with root systems) and their $q$-deformation the Macdonald polynomials. For the root systems of type $A$, our Pieri formulas recover the well-known Pieri formulas for the Hall-Littlewood and Macdonald symmetric functions due to Morris and Macdonald as special cases.

A compositional shuffle conjecture specifying touch points of the Dyck path
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a $q,t$-enumeration of Dyck paths which are forced to touch the main diagonal at specific points and forbidden to touch elsewhere and conjecture that it describes the action of the Macdonald theory $\nabla$ operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Our conjecture refines several earlier conjectures concerning the space of diagonal harmonics including the "shuffle conjecture" (Duke J. Math. $\mathbf {126}$ (2005), pp. 195-232) for $\nabla e_n[X]$. We bring to light that certain generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by compositions are the building blocks for the algebraic combinatorial theory of $q,t$-Catalan sequences and we prove a number of identities involving these functions.

Hall-Littlewood polynomials and fixed point enumeration
Published in Discrete Math., vol. 310, issue 4, (2010), 869-876 • View PublicationBIB
We resolve affirmatively some conjectures of Reiner, Stanton, and White \cite{ReinerComm} regarding enumeration of transportation matrices which are invariant under certain cyclic row and column rotations. Our results are phrased in terms of the bicyclic sieving phenomenon introduced by Barcelo, Reiner, and Stanton \cite{BRSBiD}. The proofs of our results use various tools from symmetric function theory such as the Stanton-White rim hook correspondence \cite{SW} and results concerning the specialization of Hall-Littlewood polynomials due to Lascoux, Leclerc, and Thibon \cite{LLTUnity} \cite{LLTRibbon}.

One-skeleton galleries, the path model and a generalization of Macdonald's formula for Hall-Littlewood polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a direct geometric interpretation of the path model using galleries in the $1-$skeleton of the Bruhat-Tits building associated to a semi-simple algebraic group. This interpretation allows us to compute the coefficients of the expansion of the Hall-Littlewood polynomials in the monomial basis. The formula we obtain is a "geometric compression" of the one proved by Schwer, its specialization to the case ${\tt A}_n$ turns out to be equivalent to Macdonald's formula.

Haglund-Haiman-Loehr Type Formulas for Hall-Littlewood Polynomials of Type B and C
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous work we showed that two apparently unrelated formulas for the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type A are, in fact, closely related. The first is the tableau formula obtained by specializing q=0 in the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second is the type $A$ instance of Schwer's formula (rephrased and rederived by Ram) for Hall-Littlewood polynomials of arbitrary finite type; Schwer's formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, which originate in the work of Gaussent-Littelmann and of the author with Postnikov on discrete counterparts to the Littelmann path model. We showed that the tableau formula follows by "compressing" Ram's version of Schwer's formula. In this paper, we derive tableau formulas for the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type B and C by compressing the corresponding instances of Schwer's formula.

Combinatorial Formulas for Macdonald and Hall-Littlewood Polynomials of Types A and C. Extended Abstract
Published • View PublicationBIB
A breakthrough in the theory of (type A) Macdonald polynomials is due to Haglund, Haiman and Loehr, who exhibited a combinatorial formula for these polynomials in terms of fillings of Young diagrams. Recently, Ram and Yip gave a formula for the Macdonald polynomials of arbitrary type in terms of the corresponding affine Weyl group. In this paper, we show that a Haglund-Haiman-Loehr type formula follows naturally from the more general Ram-Yip formula, via compression. Then we extend this approach to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type C, which are specializations of the corresponding Macdonald polynomials at q=0. We note that no analog of the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula exists beyond type A, so our work is a first step towards finding such a formula.

Hall-Littlewood plane partitions and KP
Published in Int.Math.Res.Not.2009:2597-2619,2009 • View PublicationBIB
MacMahon's classic generating function of random plane partitions, which is related to Schur polynomials, was recently extended by Vuletic to a generating function of weighted plane partitions that is related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials, S(t), and further to one related to Macdonald polynomials, S(t,q). Using Jing's 1-parameter deformation of charged free fermions, we obtain a Fock space derivation of the Hall-Littlewood extension. Confining the plane partitions to a finite s-by-s square base, we show that the resulting generating function, S_{s-by-s}(t), is an evaluation of a tau-function of KP.

Hall-Littlewood Polynomials, Alcove Walks, and Fillings of Young Diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recent breakthrough in the theory of (type A) Macdonald polynomials is due to Haglund, Haiman and Loehr, who exhibited a combinatorial formula for these polynomials in terms of a pair of statistics on fillings of Young diagrams. The inversion statistic, which is the more intricate one, suffices for specializing a closely related formula to one for the type A Hall-Littlewood Q-polynomials (spherical functions on p-adic groups). An apparently unrelated development, at the level of arbitrary finite root systems, led to Schwer's formula (rephrased and rederived by Ram) for the Hall-Littlewood P-polynomials of arbitrary type. The latter formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, which originate in the work of Gaussent-Littelmann and of the author with Postnikov on discrete counterparts to the Littelmann path model. In this paper, we relate the above developments, by deriving a Haglund-Haiman-Loehr type formula for the Hall-Littlewood P-polynomials of type A from Ram's version of Schwer's formula via a "compression" procedure.

Adding \pm 1 to the argument of an Hall-Littlewood polynomial
Shifting by \pm 1 powers sums: p_i \to p_i \pm 1 induces a transformation on symmetric functions that we detail in the case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials. By iteration, this gives a description of these polynomials in terms of plane partitions, as well as some generating functions. We recover in particular an identity of Warnaar related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
Bernstein-Szego Polynomials Associated with Root Systems
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. 39 (2007), 837-847 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce multivariate generalizations of the Bernstein-Szego polynomials, which are associated to the root systems of the complex simple Lie algebras. The multivariate polynomials in question generalize Macdonald's Hall-Littlewood polynomials associated with root systems. For the root system of type A1 (corresponding to the Lie algebra SL (2;C)) the classic Bernstein-Szego polynomials are recovered.

Non-Symmetric Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Using the action of the Yang-Baxter elements of the Hecke algebra on polynomials, we define two bases of polynomials in n variables. The Hall-Littlewood polynomials are a subfamily of one of them. For q=0, these bases specialize into the two families of classical Key polynomials (i.e. Demazure characters for type A). We give a scalar product for which the two bases are adjoint of each other.

Alcove walks, Hecke algebras, spherical functions, crystals and column strict tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper makes precise the close connection between the affine Hecke algebra, the path model, and the theory of crystals. Section 2 is a basic pictorial exposition of Weyl groups and affine Weyl groups and Section 5 is an exposition of the theory of (a) symmetric functions, (b) crystals and (c) the path model. Sections 3 and 4 give an exposition of the affine Hecke algebra and recent results regarding the combinatorics of spherical functions on p-adic groups (Hall-Littlewood polynomials). The $q$-analogue of the theory of crystals developed in Section 4 specializes to the path model version of the ``classical'' crystal theory. The connection to the affine Hecke algebra and the approach to spherical functions for a $p$-adic group in Nelsen-Ram was made concrete by C. Schwer who told me that ``the periodic Hecke module encodes the positively folded galleries'' of Gaussent-Littelmann. This paper is a further development of this point of view.

A combinatorial generalization of the Boson-Fermion correspondence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We attempt to explain the ubiquity of tableaux and of Pieri and Cauchy formulae for combinatorially defined families of symmetric functions. We show that such formulae are to be expected from symmetric functions arising from representations of Heisenberg algebras. The resulting framework that we describe is a generalization of the classical Boson-Fermion correspondence, from which Schur functions arise. Our work can be used to understand Hall-Littlewood polynomials, Macdonald polynomials and Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon's ribbon functions, together with other new families of symmetric functions.

Galleries, Hall-Littlewood polynomials and structure constants of the spherical Hecke algebra
Published in IMRN, Volume 2006 (2006) • View PublicationBIB
We provide a combinatorial description of the coefficients appearing in the expansion of Hall-Littlewood polynomials in terms of monomial symmetric functions. We also give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Hall-Littlewood polynomials. For proving this we use galleries to calculate Satake coefficients and structure constants of spherical Hecke algebras with arbitrary parameters.

A Combinatorial Formula for Macdonald Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a combinatorial formula for the Macdonald polynomial H_mu(x;q,t) which had been conjectured by the first author. Corollaries to our main theorem include the expansion of H_mu(x;q,t) in terms of LLT polynomials, a new proof of the charge formula of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for Hall-Littlewood polynomials, a new proof of Knop and Sahi's combinatorial formula for Jack polynomials as well as a lifting of their formula to integral form Macdonald polynomials, and a new combinatorial rule for the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K_{lambda,mu}(q,t) in the case that mu is a partition with parts less than or equal to 2.

Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and Macdonald spherical functions
Published in Surveys in Combinatorics 2003 , C. Wensley ed., London Math. Soc. Lect. Notes 307, Cambridge University Press, 2003, 325--370. • View PublicationBIB
Generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials (Macdonald spherical functions) and generalized Kostka-Foulkes polynomials ($q$-weight multiplicities) arise in many places in combinatorics, representation theory, geometry, and mathematical physics. This paper attempts to organize the different definitions of these objects and prove the fundamental combinatorial results from ``scratch'', in a presentation which, hopefully, will be accessible and useful for both the nonexpert and researchers currently working in this very active field. The combinatorics of the affine Hecke algebra plays a central role. The final section of this paper can be read independently of the rest of the paper. It presents, with proof, Lascoux and Schützenberger's positive formula for the Kostka-Foulkes poynomials in the type A case.
