A $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of the set of vertices of $G$ into $k$ independent sets, which are called colors. A $k$-coloring is neighbor-locating if any two vertices belonging to the same color can be distinguished from each other by the colors of their respective neighbors. The neighbor-locating chromatic number $χ_{_{NL}}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a neighbor-locating coloring of $G$. In this paper, we determine the neighbor-locating chromatic number of paths, cycles, fans, and wheels. Moreover, a procedure to construct a neighbor-locating coloring of minimum cardinality for these families of graphs is given. We also obtain tight upper bounds on the order of trees and unicyclic graphs in terms of the neighbor-locating chromatic number. Further partial results for trees are also established.
Characterising bimodal collections of sets in finite groups
A collection of disjoint subsets ${\cal A}=\{A_1,A_2,\dotsc,A_m\}$ of a finite abelian group is said to have the \emph{bimodal} property if, for any non-zero group element $δ$, either $δ$ never occurs as a difference between an element of $A_i$ and an element of some other set $A_j$, or else for every element $a_i$ in $A_i$ there is an element $a_j\in A_j$ for some $j\neq i$ such that $a_i-a_j=δ$. This property arises in various familiar situations, such as the cosets of a fixed subgroup or in a group partition, and has applications to the construction of optimal algebraic manipulation detection (AMD) codes. In this paper, we obtain a structural characterisation for bimodal collections of sets.

In this paper we give a fast algorithm to generate all partitions of a positive integer $n$. Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. It is known that the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. Using tree structures for storing the partitions of integers, we develop a new ascending composition generation algorithm which is substantially more efficient than the algorithms from the literature.
The Multiset Partition Algebra
We introduce the multiset partition algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $k$ is a positive integer. When $ξ$ is specialized to a positive integer $n$, we establish the Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of resulting algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^k(F^n)$. The construction of $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ generalizes to any vector $λ$ of non-negative integers yielding the algebra $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$ so that there is Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ and $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$. We find the generating function for the multiplicity of each irreducible representation of $S_n$ in $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$, as $λ$ varies, in terms of a plethysm of Schur functions. As consequences we obtain an indexing set for the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$, and the generating function for the multiplicity of an irreducible polynomial representation of $GL_n(F)$ when restricted to $S_n$. We show that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ embeds inside the partition algebra $\mathcal{P}_{|λ|}(ξ)$. Using this embedding, over $F$, we prove that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is a cellular algebra, and $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is semisimple when $ξ$ is not an integer or $ξ$ is an integer such that $ξ\geq 2|λ|-1$. We give an insertion algorithm based on Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence realizing the decomposition of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ as $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)\times \mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$-module.
Good orientations of 2T-graphs
In this paper we study graphs which admit acyclic orientations that contain a pair of arc-disjoint out-branching and in-branching (such an orientation is called good) and we focus on edge-minimal such graphs. A 2T-graph is a graph whose edge set can be decomposed into two edge-disjoint spanning trees. Vertex-minimal 2T-graphs with at least two vertices which are known as generic circuits play an important role in rigidity theory for graphs. We prove that every generic circuit has a good orientation. Using this result we prove that if $G$ is 2T-graph whose vertex set has a partition $V_1,V_2,\ldots{},V_k$ so that each $V_i$ induces a generic circuit $G_i$ of $G$ and the set of edges between different $G_i$'s form a matching in $G$, then $G$ has a good orientation. We also obtain a characterization for the case when the set of edges between different $G_i$'s form a double tree, that is, if we contract each $G_i$ to one vertex, and delete parallel edges we obtain a tree. All our proofs are constructive and imply polynomial algorithms for finding the desired good orderings and the pairs of arc-disjoint branchings which certify that the orderings are good. We also identify a structure which can be used to certify a 2T-graph which does not have a good orientation.
On partially ordered patterns of length 4 and 5 in permutations
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied widely in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In an occurrence of a POP, the relative order of some of the elements is not important. Thus, any POP of length $k$ is defined by a partially ordered set on $k$ elements, and classical patterns correspond to $k$-element chains. The notion of a POP provides a convenient language to deal with larger sets of permutation patterns.
This paper contributes to a long line of research on classical permutation patterns of length 4 and 5, and beyond, by conducting a systematic search of connections between sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) and permutations avoiding POPs of length 4 and 5. As the result, we (i) obtain 13 new enumerative results for classical patterns of length 4 and 5, and a number of results for patterns of arbitrary length, (ii) collect under one roof many sporadic results in the literature related to avoidance of patterns of length 4 and 5, and (iii) conjecture 6 connections to the OEIS. Among the most intriguing bijective questions we state, 7 are related to explaining Wilf-equivalence of various sets of patterns, e.g.\ 5 or 8 patterns of length 4, and 2 or 6 patterns of length~5.
Equitable partition of plane graphs with independent crossings into induced forests
The cluster of a crossing in a graph drawing in the plane is the set of the four end-vertices of its two crossed edges. Two crossings are independent if their clusters do not intersect. In this paper, we prove that every plane graph with independent crossings has an equitable partition into $m$ induced forests for any $m\geq 8$. Moreover, we decrease this lower bound 8 for $m$ to 6, 5, 4 and 3 if we additionally assume that the girth of the considering graph is at least 4, 5, 6 and 26, respectively.
Sets of iterated Partitions and the Bell iterated Exponential Integers
It is well known that the Bell numbers represent the total number of partitions of an n-set. Similarly, the Stirling numbers of the second kind, represent the number of k-partitions of an n-set. In this paper we introduce a certain partitioning process that gives rise to a sequence of sets of "nested" partitions. We prove that at stage m, the cardinality of the resulting set will equal the m-th order Bell number. This set-theoretic interpretation enables us to make a natural definition of higher order Stirling numbers and to study the combinatorics of these entities. The cardinality of the elements of the constructed "hyper partition" sets are explored.
Partition Inequalities and Applications to Sum-Product Conjectures of Kanade-Russell
We consider differences of one- and two-variable finite products and provide combinatorial proofs of the nonnegativity of certain coefficients. Since the products may be interpreted as generating functions for certain integer partitions, this amounts to showing a partition inequality. This extends results due to Berkovich-Garvan and McLaughlin. We then apply the first inequality and Andrews' Anti-telescoping Method to give a solution to an 'Ehrenpreis Problem' for recently conjectured sum-product identities of Kanade- Russell. That is, we provide some evidence for Kanade-Russell's conjectures by showing nonnegativity of coefficients in differences of product-sides as Andrews-Baxter and Kadell did for the product sides of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
Kronecker positivity and 2-modular representation theory
This paper consists of two prongs. Firstly, we prove that any Specht module labelled by a 2-separated partition is semisimple and we completely determine its decomposition as a direct sum of graded simple modules. Secondly, we apply these results and other modular representation theoretic techniques on the study of Kronecker coefficients and hence verify Saxl's conjecture for a large new class of partitions.
Bijections between t-Core Partitions and t-Tuples
This note introduces some bijections relating core partitions and tuples of integers. We apply these bijections to count the number of cores with various types of restriction, including fixed number of parts, limited size of parts, parts divisible by some integer, and distinct parts. For example, we prove that the number of $2t$-core partitions into $l$ even parts equals the number of $t$-core partitions into $l$ parts. We also generalize one expression for simultaneous cores, which was given by Baek, Nam and Yu, recently. Subsequently, we use this expression to obtain recurrence satisfied by numbers of $(s,s+1,\cdots,s+r)-$core partitions for $s\geq1$.
Structural properties of non-crossing partitions from algebraic and geometric perspectives

The present thesis studies structural properties of non-crossing partitions associated to finite Coxeter groups from both algebraic and geometric perspectives. On the one hand, non-crossing partitions are lattices, and on the other hand, we can view them as simplicial complexes by considering their order complexes. We make use of these different interpretations and their interactions in various ways.
The order complexes of non-crossing partitions have a rich geometric structure, which we investigate in this thesis. In particular, we interpret them as subcomplexes of spherical buildings. From a more algebraic viewpoint, we study automorphisms and anti-automorphisms of non-crossing partitions and their relation to building automorphisms. We also compute the automorphism groups of non-crossing partitions of type $B$ and $D$, provided that $n \neq 4$ for type $D$. For this, we introduce a new pictorial representation for type $D$.
In type $A$ we study the structural properties of the order complex of the non-crossing partitions in more detail. In particular, we investigate the interaction of chamber distances and convex hulls in the non-crossing partition complex and the ambient spherical building. These questions are connected to the curvature conjecture of Brady and McCammond.
Root Cones and the Resonance Arrangement
We study the connection between triangulations of a type $A$ root polytope and the resonance arrangement, a hyperplane arrangement that shows up in a surprising number of contexts. Despite an elementary definition for the resonance arrangement, the number of resonance chambers has only been computed up to the $n=8$ dimensional case. We focus on data structures for labeling chambers, such as sign vectors and sets of alternating trees, with an aim at better understanding the structure of the resonance arrangement, and, in particular, enumerating its chambers. Along the way, we make connections with similar (and similarly difficult) enumeration questions. With the root polytope viewpoint, we relate resonance chambers to the chambers of polynomiality of the Kostant partition function. With the hyperplane viewpoint, we clarify the connections between resonance chambers and threshold functions. In particular, we show that the base-2 logarithm of the number of resonance chambers is asymptotically $n^2$.
Complexity of packing common bases in matroids
One of the most intriguing unsolved questions of matroid optimization is the characterization of the existence of $k$ disjoint common bases of two matroids. The significance of the problem is well-illustrated by the long list of conjectures that can be formulated as special cases, such as Woodall's conjecture on packing disjoint dijoins in a directed graph, or Rota's beautiful conjecture on rearrangements of bases.
In the present paper we prove that the problem is difficult under the rank oracle model, i.e., we show that there is no algorithm which decides if the common ground set of two matroids can be partitioned into $k$ common bases by using a polynomial number of independence queries. Our complexity result holds even for the very special case when $k=2$.
Through a series of reductions, we also show that the abstract problem of packing common bases in two matroids includes the NAE-SAT problem and the Perfect Even Factor problem in directed graphs. These results in turn imply that the problem is not only difficult in the independence oracle model but also includes NP-complete special cases already when $k=2$, one of the matroids is a partition matroid, while the other matroid is linear and is given by an explicit representation.
Signed partitions - A balls into urns approach
Using Reiner's definition of Stirling numbers of type B of the second kind, we provide a 'balls into urns' approach for proving a generalization of a well-known identity concerning the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind: $x^n=\sum\limits_{k=0}^n{S(n,k)[x]_k}.$
Self-orthogonal codes from equitable partitions of association schemes
We give a method of constructing self-orthogonal codes from equitable partitions of association schemes. By applying this method we construct self-orthogonal codes from some distance-regular graphs. Some of the obtained codes are optimal. Further, we introduce a notion of self-orthogonal subspace codes. We show that under some conditions equitable partitions of association schemes yield such self-orthogonal subspace codes and we give some examples from distance-regular graphs.

Two partial orders on a reflection group, the codimension order and the prefix order, are together called the absolute order when they agree. We show that in this case the absolute order on a complex reflection group has the strong Sperner property, except possibly for the Coxeter group of type $D_n$, for which this property is conjectural. The Sperner property had previously been established for the noncrossing partition lattice $NC_W$, a certain maximal interval in the absolute order, but not for the entire poset, except in the case of the symmetric group. We also show that neither the codimension order nor the prefix order has the Sperner property for general complex reflection groups.
Non-crossing partitions
Non-crossing partitions have been a staple in combinatorics for quite some time. More recently, they have surfaced (sometimes unexpectedly) in various other contexts from free probability to classifying spaces of braid groups. Also, analogues of the non-crossing partition lattice have been introduced. Here, the classical non-crossing partitions are associated to Coxeter and Artin groups of type $\mathsf{A}_n$, which explains the tight connection to the symmetric groups and braid groups. We shall outline those developments.
A Polynomial Identity Implying Schur's Partition Theorem
We propose and prove a new polynomial identity that implies Schur's partition theorem. We give combinatorial interpretations of some of our expressions in the spirit of Kurşungöz. We also present some related polynomial and $q$-series identities.

We study a two-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers: $C_{d,p}(n)$ is the number of ways to subdivide the $d$-dimensional hypercube into $n$ rectangular blocks using orthogonal partitions of fixed arity $p$. Bremner \& Dotsenko introduced $C_{d,p}(n)$ in their work on Boardman--Vogt tensor products of operads; they used homological algebra to prove a recursive formula and a functional equation. We express $C_{d,p}(n)$ as simple finite sums, and determine their growth rate and asymptotic behaviour. We give an elementary proof of the functional equation, using a bijection between hypercube decompositions and a family of full $p$-ary trees. Our results generalize the well-known correspondence between Catalan numbers and full binary trees.
