Binary Cyclotomic Polynomials: Representation via Words and Algorithms
Published in T. Lecroq and S. Puzynina (Eds.): WORDS 2021, LNCS 12847, pp. 65-77, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Cyclotomic polynomials are basic objects in Number Theory. Their properties depend on the number of distinct primes that intervene in the factorization of their order, and the binary case is thus the first nontrivial case. This paper sees the vector of coefficients of the polynomial as a word on a ternary alphabet $\{-1,0 ,+1\}$. It designs an efficient algorithm that computes a compact representation of this word. This algorithm is of linear time with respect to the size of the output, and, thus, optimal. This approach allows to recover known properties of coefficients of binary cyclotomic polynomials, and extends to the case of polynomials associated with numerical semi-groups of dimension 2.

A new tableau model for irreducible polynomial representations of the orthogonal group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a new tableau model from which one can easily deduce the characters of finite-dimensional irreducible polynomial representations of the special orthogonal group $SO_n(\mathbb{C})$. This model originates from the representation theory of the $\imath$quantum group (also known as the quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebra) of type $\mathrm{A\!I}$, and is equipped with a combinatorial structure, which we call $\mathrm{A\!I}$-crystal structure. This structure enables us to describe combinatorially the tensor product of an $SO_n(\mathbb{C})$-module and a $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$-module, and the branching from $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ to $SO_n(\mathbb{C})$.

Spectrally Simple Zeros of Zeon Polynomials
Published in Adv. Appl. Clifford Algebras 31, 66 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Combinatorial properties of zeons have been applied to graph enumeration problems, graph colorings, routing problems in communication networks, partition-dependent stochastic integrals, and Boolean satisfiability. Power series of elementary zeon functions are naturally reduced to finite sums by virtue of the nilpotent properties of zeons. Further, the zeon extension of any analytic complex function has zeon polynomial representations on associated equivalence classes of zeons. In this paper, zeros of polynomials over complex zeons are considered. Existing results for real zeon polynomials are extended to the complex case and new results are established. In particular, a fundamental theorem of zeon algebra is established for spectrally simple zeros of complex zeon polynomials, and an algorithm is presented that allows one to find spectrally simple zeros when they exist. As an application, inverses of zeon extensions of analytic functions are computed using polynomial methods.
On Polynomial Representations of the DP Color Function: Theta Graphs and Their Generalizations
Published • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied in recent years after its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. As the analogue of the chromatic polynomial $P(G,m)$, the DP color function of a graph $G$, denoted $P_{DP}(G,m)$, counts the minimum number of DP-colorings over all possible $m$-fold covers. It is known that, unlike the list color function $P_{\ell}(G,m)$, for any $g \geq 3$ there exists a graph $G$ with girth $g$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) < P(G,m)$ when $m$ is sufficiently large. Thus, two fundamental open questions regarding the DP color function are: (i) for which $G$ does there exist an $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) = P(G,m)$ whenever $m \geq N$, (ii) Given a graph $G$ does there always exist an $N \in \mathbb{N}$ and a polynomial $p(m)$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) = p(m)$ whenever $m \geq N$? In this paper we give exact formulas for the DP color function of a Theta graph based on the parity of its path lengths. This gives an explicit answer, including the formulas for the polynomials that are not the chromatic polynomial, to both the questions above for Theta graphs. We extend this result to Generalized Theta graphs by characterizing the exact parity condition that ensures the DP color function eventually equals the chromatic polynomial. To answer the second question for Generalized Theta graphs, we confirm it for the larger class of graphs with a feedback vertex set of size one.

The Stable Limit DAHA and the Double Dyck Path Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the compatibility of the action of the DAHA of type GL with two inverse systems of polynomial rings obtained from the standard Laurent polynomial representations. In both cases, the crucial analysis is that of the compatibility of the action of the Cherednik operators. Each case leads to a representation of a limit structure (the +/- stable limit DAHA) on a space of almost symmetric polynomials in infinitely many variables (the standard representation). As an application, we show that the defining representation of the double Dyck path algebra arises from the standard representation of the +stable limit DAHA.

Correlation Decay and the Absence of Zeros Property of Partition Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Absence of (complex) zeros property is at the heart of the interpolation method developed by Barvinok \cite{barvinok2017combinatorics} for designing deterministic approximation algorithms for various graph counting and computing partition functions problems. Earlier methods for solving the same problem include the one based on the correlation decay property. Remarkably, the classes of graphs for which the two methods apply sometimes coincide or nearly coincide. In this paper we show that this is more than just a coincidence. We establish that if the interpolation method is valid for a family of graphs satisfying the self-reducibility property, then this family exhibits a form of correlation decay property which is asymptotic Strong Spatial Mixing (SSM) at distances $ω(\log n)$, where $n$ is the number of nodes of the graph. This applies in particular to amenable graphs, such as graphs which are finite subsets of lattices. Our proof is based on a certain graph polynomial representation of the associated partition function. This representation is at the heart of the design of the polynomial time algorithms underlying the interpolation method itself. We conjecture that our result holds for all, and not just amenable graphs.
Log-rank and lifting for AND-functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $f: \{0,1\}^n \to \{0, 1\}$ be a boolean function, and let $f_\land (x, y) = f(x \land y)$ denote the AND-function of $f$, where $x \land y$ denotes bit-wise AND. We study the deterministic communication complexity of $f_\land$ and show that, up to a $\log n$ factor, it is bounded by a polynomial in the logarithm of the real rank of the communication matrix of $f_\land$. This comes within a $\log n$ factor of establishing the log-rank conjecturefor AND-functions with no assumptions on $f$. Our result stands in contrast with previous results on special cases of the log-rank conjecture, which needed significant restrictions on $f$ such as monotonicity or low $\mathbb{F}_2$-degree. Our techniques can also be used to prove (within a $\log n$ factor) a lifting theorem for AND-functions, stating that the deterministic communication complexity of $f_\land$ is polynomially-related to the AND-decision tree complexity of $f$. The results rely on a new structural result regarding boolean functions $f:\{0, 1\}^n \to \{0, 1\}$ with a sparse polynomial representation, which may be of independent interest. We show that if the polynomial computing $f$ has few monomials then the set system of the monomials has a small hitting set, of size poly-logarithmic in its sparsity. We also establish extensions of this result to multi-linear polynomials $f:\{0,1\}^n \to \mathbb{R}$ with a larger range.

On lattice point counting in $Δ$-modular polyhedra
Published in Optim Lett 16, 1991-2018 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Let a polyhedron $P$ be defined by one of the following ways: (i) $P = \{x \in R^n \colon A x \leq b\}$, where $A \in Z^{(n+k) \times n}$, $b \in Z^{(n+k)}$ and $rank\, A = n$; (ii) $P = \{x \in R_+^n \colon A x = b\}$, where $A \in Z^{k \times n}$, $b \in Z^{k}$ and $rank\, A = k$. And let all rank order minors of $A$ be bounded by $Δ$ in absolute values. We show that the short rational generating function for the power series $$ \sum\limits_{m \in P \cap Z^n} x^m $$ can be computed with the arithmetic complexity $ O\left(T_{SNF}(d) \cdot d^{k} \cdot d^{\log_2 Δ}\right), $ where $k$ and $Δ$ are fixed, $d = \dim P$, and $T_{SNF}(m)$ is the complexity to compute the Smith Normal Form for $m \times m$ integer matrix. In particular, $d = n$ for the case (i) and $d = n-k$ for the case (ii). The simplest examples of polyhedra that meet conditions (i) or (ii) are the simplicies, the subset sum polytope and the knapsack or multidimensional knapsack polytopes. We apply these results to parametric polytopes, and show that the step polynomial representation of the function $c_P(y) = |P_{y} \cap Z^n|$, where $P_{y}$ is parametric polytope, can be computed by a polynomial time even in varying dimension if $P_{y}$ has a close structure to the cases (i) or (ii). As another consequence, we show that the coefficients $e_i(P,m)$ of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial $$ \left| mP \cap Z^n\right| = \sum\limits_{j = 0}^n e_i(P,m)m^j $$ can be computed by a polynomial time algorithm for fixed $k$ and $Δ$.

Further study on elliptic interpolation formulas for the elliptic Askey-Wilson polynomials and allied identities
In this paper, we introduce the so-called elliptic Askey-Wilson polynomials which are homogeneous polynomials in two special theta functions. With regard to the significance of polynomials of such kind, we establish some general elliptic interpolation formulas by the methods of matrix inversions and of polynomial representations. Furthermore, we find that the basis of elliptic interpolation space due to Schlosser can be uniquely characterized via the elliptic Askey-Wilson polynomials. As applications of these elliptic interpolation formulas, we establish some new elliptic function identities, including an extension of Weierstrass' theta identity, a generalized elliptic Karlsson-Minton type identity, and an elliptic analogue of Gasper's summation formula for very-well-poised ${}_{6+2m}φ_{5+2m}$ series.
Polynomial Induction and the Restriction Problem
Published in Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We construct the polynomial induction functor, which is the right adjoint to the restriction functor from the category of polynomial representations of a general linear group to the category of representations of its Weyl group. This construction leads to a representation-theoretic proof of Littlewood's plethystic formula for the multiplicity of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group in such a restriction. The unimodality of certain bipartite partition functions follows.

Intersection distribution, non-hitting index and Kakeya sets in affine planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose the concepts of intersection distribution and non-hitting index, which can be viewed from two related perspectives. The first one concerns a point set $S$ of size $q+1$ in the classical projective plane $PG(2,q)$, where the intersection distribution of $S$ indicates the intersection pattern between $S$ and the lines in $PG(2,q)$. The second one relates to a polynomial $f$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the intersection distribution of $f$ records an overall distribution property of a collection of polynomials $\{f(x)+cx \mid c \in \mathbb{F}_q\}$. These two perspectives are closely related, in the sense that each polynomial produces a $(q+1)$-set in a canonical way and conversely, each $(q+1)$-set with certain property has a polynomial representation. Indeed, the intersection distribution provides a new angle to distinguish polynomials over finite fields, based on the geometric property of the corresponding $(q+1)$-sets. Among the intersection distribution, we identify a particularly interesting quantity named non-hitting index. For a point set $S$, its non-hitting index counts the number of lines in $PG(2,q)$ which do not hit $S$. For a polynomial $f$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, its non-hitting index gives the summation of the sizes of $q$ value sets $\{f(x)+cx \mid x \in \mathbb{F}_q\}$, where $c \in \mathbb{F}_q$. We derive bounds on the non-hitting index and show that the non-hitting index contains much information about the corresponding set and the polynomial. More precisely, using a geometric approach, we show that the non-hitting index is sufficient to characterize the corresponding point set and the polynomial when it is close to the lower and upper bounds. Moreover, we employ an algebraic approach to derive the intersection distribution of several families of point sets and polynomials, and compute the sizes of related Kakeya sets in affine planes.
Character Polynomials and the Restriction Problem
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 4, issue 4 (2021), p. 703-722 • View PublicationBIB
Character polynomials are used to study the restriction of a polynomial representation of a general linear group to its subgroup of permutation matrices. A simple formula is obtained for computing inner products of class functions given by character polynomials. Character polynomials for symmetric and alternating tensors are computed using generating functions with Eulerian factorizations. These are used to compute character polynomials for Weyl modules, which exhibit a duality. By taking inner products of character polynomials for Weyl modules and character polynomials for Specht modules, stable restriction coefficients are easily computed. Generating functions of dimensions of symmetric group invariants in Weyl modules are obtained. Partitions with two rows, two columns, and hook partitions whose Weyl modules have non-zero vectors invariant under the symmetric group are characterized. A reformulation of the restriction problem in terms of a restriction functor from the category of strict polynomial functors to the category of finitely generated FI-modules is obtained.
The Multiset Partition Algebra
We introduce the multiset partition algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $k$ is a positive integer. When $ξ$ is specialized to a positive integer $n$, we establish the Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of resulting algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^k(F^n)$. The construction of $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ generalizes to any vector $λ$ of non-negative integers yielding the algebra $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$ so that there is Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ and $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$. We find the generating function for the multiplicity of each irreducible representation of $S_n$ in $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$, as $λ$ varies, in terms of a plethysm of Schur functions. As consequences we obtain an indexing set for the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$, and the generating function for the multiplicity of an irreducible polynomial representation of $GL_n(F)$ when restricted to $S_n$. We show that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ embeds inside the partition algebra $\mathcal{P}_{|λ|}(ξ)$. Using this embedding, over $F$, we prove that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is a cellular algebra, and $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is semisimple when $ξ$ is not an integer or $ξ$ is an integer such that $ξ\geq 2|λ|-1$. We give an insertion algorithm based on Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence realizing the decomposition of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ as $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)\times \mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$-module.

Candidate for the crystal $B(-\infty)$ for the queer Lie superalgebra

It is shown that the direct limit of the semistandard decomposition tableau model for polynomial representations of the queer Lie superalgebra exists, which is believed to be the crystal for the upper half of the corresponding quantum group. An extension of this model to describe the direct limit combinatorially is given. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial representations may be recovered from the limit in most cases.

Composition Tableaux basis for Schur functors and the Plücker algebra
We show that combinatorial objects called row-strict composition tableaux, introduced by Mason and Remmel in 2014 and closely related to the quasi-symmetric Schur functions of Haglund-Luoto-Mason-van Willigenburg, form a basis for Schur functors of finite free modules over arbitrary commutative rings. When the ring is the complex numbers, this produces a new basis for the irreducible polynomial representations of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, in this case it also produces new basis for the Plücker algebra, a subalgebra of the polynomial ring over $\mathbb{C}$ in $n^2$ variables, which is of independent combinatorial and geometric interests. As an aside we also show that these results hold for other combinatorial objects called reverse row strict tableau.

Plethysms of symmetric functions and highest weight representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $s_ν\circ s_μ$ denote the plethystic product of the Schur functions $s_ν$ and $s_μ$. In this article we define an explicit polynomial representation corresponding to $s_ν\circ s_μ$ with basis indexed by certain `plethystic' semistandard tableaux. Using these representations we prove generalizations of four results on plethysms due to Bruns--Conca--Varbaro, Brion, Ikenmeyer and the authors. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for the multiplicity $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ to be stable under insertion of new parts into $μ$ and $λ$. We also characterize all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ in the dominance order such that $s_λ$ appears in $s_ν\circ s_μ$ and determine the corresponding multiplicities using plethystic semistandard tableaux.

Specht modules decompose as alternating sums of restrictions of Schur modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur modules give the irreducible polynomial representations of the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_t$. Viewing the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_t$ as a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_t$, we may restrict Schur modules to $\mathfrak{S}_t$ and decompose the result into a direct sum of Specht modules, the irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{S}_t$. We give an equivariant Möbius inversion formula that we use to invert this expansion in the representation ring for $\mathfrak{S}_t$ for $t$ large. In addition to explicit formulas in terms of plethysms, we show the coefficients that appear alternate in sign by degree. In particular, this allows us to define a new basis of symmetric functions whose structure constants are stable Kronecker coefficients and which expand with alternating signs into the Schur basis.

Hamilton cycles in vertex-transitive graphs of order a product of two primes
A step forward is made in a long standing Lovász's problem regarding hamiltonicity of vertex-transitive graphs by showing that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order a product of two primes, other than the Petersen graph, contains a Hamilton cycle. Essential tools used in the proof range from classical results on existence of Hamilton cycles, such as Chvátal's theorem and Jackson's theorem, to certain results on polynomial representations of quadratic residues at primitive roots in finite fields.

Hibi algebras and representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper gives a survey on the relation between Hibi algebras and representation theory. The notion of Hodge algebras or algebras with straightening laws has been proved to be very useful to describe the structure of many important algebras in classical invariant theory and representation theory. In particular, a special type of such algebras introduced by Hibi provides a nice bridge between combinatorics and representation theory of classical groups. We will examine certain poset structures of Young tableaux and affine monoids, Hibi algebras in toric degenerations of flag varieties, and their relations to polynomial representations of the complex general linear group.

Representations of monomial matrices and restriction from $GL_n$ to $S_n$
We outline an approach to understanding restrictions of polynomial representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ to $S_n$ by first restricting to $T \rtimes S_n$, the subgroup of $n \times n$ monomial matrices. Using this approach we give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of a tensor product of symmetric powers of the defining representation.
