Hilbert series of typical representations for Lie superalgebras
Let g be a basic classical Lie superalgebra over C. In the case of a typical weight whose every nonnegative integer multiple is also typical, we compute a closed form for the Hilbert series whose coefficients encode the dimensions of finite-dimensional irreducible typical g-representations. We give a formula for this Hilbert series in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. Additionally, we show a simple closed form in terms of differential operators.

Approximating the discrete time-cost tradeoff problem with bounded depth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We revisit the deadline version of the discrete time-cost tradeoff problem for the special case of bounded depth. Such instances occur for example in VLSI design. The depth of an instance is the number of jobs in a longest chain and is denoted by $d$. We prove new upper and lower bounds on the approximability. First we observe that the problem can be regarded as a special case of finding a minimum-weight vertex cover in a $d$-partite hypergraph. Next, we study the natural LP relaxation, which can be solved in polynomial time for fixed $d$ and -- for time-cost tradeoff instances -- up to an arbitrarily small error in general. Improving on prior work of Lovász and of Aharoni, Holzman and Krivelevich, we describe a deterministic algorithm with approximation ratio slightly less than $\frac{d}{2}$ for minimum-weight vertex cover in $d$-partite hypergraphs for fixed $d$ and given $d$-partition. This is tight and yields also a $\frac{d}{2}$-approximation algorithm for general time-cost tradeoff instances. We also study the inapproximability and show that no better approximation ratio than $\frac{d+2}{4}$ is possible, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture and $\text{P}\neq\text{NP}$. This strengthens a result of Svensson, who showed that under the same assumptions no constant-factor approximation algorithm exists for general time-cost tradeoff instances (of unbounded depth). Previously, only APX-hardness was known for bounded depth.
Conditional probabilities via line arrangements and point configurations
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
We study the connection between probability distributions satisfying certain conditional independence (CI) constraints, and point and line arrangements in incidence geometry. To a family of CI statements, we associate a polynomial ideal whose algebraic invariants are encoded in a hypergraph. The primary decompositions of these ideals give a characterisation of the distributions satisfying the original CI statements. Classically, these ideals are generated by 2-minors of a matrix of variables, however, in the presence of hidden variables, they contain higher degree minors. This leads to the study of the structure of determinantal hypergraph ideals whose decompositions can be understood in terms of point and line configurations in the projective space.

Acyclic polynomials of graphs
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics, Vol 82(2) (2022), 146-181 • Search Publication
For each nonnegative integer $i$, let $a_i$ be the number of $i$-subsets of $V(G)$ that induce an acyclic subgraph of a given graph $G$. We define $A(G,x) = \sum_{i \geq 0} a_i x^i$ (the generating function for $a_i$) to be the acyclic polynomial for $G$. After presenting some properties of these polynomials, we investigate the nature and location of their roots.

Secular Coefficients and the Holomorphic Multiplicative Chaos
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the secular coefficients of $N \times N$ random unitary matrices $U_{N}$ drawn from the Circular $β$-Ensemble, which are defined as the coefficients of $\{z^n\}$ in the characteristic polynomial $\det(1-zU_{N}^{*})$. When $β> 4$ we obtain a new class of limiting distributions that arise when both $n$ and $N$ tend to infinity simultaneously. We solve an open problem of Diaconis and Gamburd by showing that for $β=2$, the middle coefficient tends to zero as $N \to \infty$. We show how the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) plays a prominent role in these problems and in the explicit description of the obtained limiting distributions. We extend the remarkable magic square formula of Diaconis and Gamburd for the moments of secular coefficients to all $β>0$ and analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the moments. We obtain estimates on the order of magnitude of the secular coefficients for all $β> 0,$ and these estimates are sharp when $β\geq 2$. These insights motivated us to introduce a new stochastic object associated with the secular coefficients, which we call Holomorphic Multiplicative Chaos (HMC). Viewing the HMC as a random distribution, we prove a sharp result about its regularity in an appropriate Sobolev space. Our proofs expose and exploit several novel connections with other areas, including random permutations, Tauberian theorems and combinatorics.
A polynomial algorithm for minimizing discrete convic functions in fixed dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently classes of conic and discrete conic functions were introduced. In this paper we use the term convic instead conic. The class of convic functions properly includes the classes of convex functions, strictly quasiconvex functions and the class of quasiconvex polynomials. On the other hand, the class of convic functions is properly included in the class of quasiconvex functions. The discrete convic function is a discrete analogue of the convic function. Recently the lower bound $3^{n-1}\log (2 ρ-1)$ for the number of calls to the comparison oracle needed to find the minimum of the discrete convic function defined on integer points of some $n$-dimensional ball with radius $ρ$ was obtained. But the problem of the existence of a polynomial (in $\logρ$ for fixed $n$) algorithm for minimizing such functions has remained open. In this paper, we answer positively the question of the existence of such an algorithm. Namely, we propose an algorithm for minimizing discrete convic functions that uses $2^{O(n^2 \log n)} \log ρ$ calls to the comparison oracle and has $2^{O(n^2 \log n)} \mbox{poly }(\log ρ)$ bit complexity.

Glauber dynamics for colourings of chordal graphs and graphs of bounded treewidth
The Glauber dynamics on the colourings of a graph is a random process which consists in recolouring at each step a random vertex of a graph with a new colour chosen uniformly at random among the colours not already present in its neighbourhood. It is known that when the total number of colours available is at least $Δ+2$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph, this process converges to a uniform distribution on the set of all the colourings. Moreover, a well known conjecture is that the time it takes for the convergence to happen, called the mixing time, is polynomial in the size of the graph. Many weaker variants of this conjecture have been studied in the literature by allowing either more colours, or restricting the graphs to particular classes, or both. This paper follows this line of research by studying the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics on chordal graphs, as well as graphs of bounded treewidth. We show that the mixing time is polynomial in the size of the graph in the two following cases: - on graphs with bounded treewidth, and at least $Δ+2$ colours, - on chordal graphs if the number of colours is at least $(1+\varepsilon) (Δ+1)$, for any fixed constant $\varepsilon$.

3XOR Games with Perfect Commuting Operator Strategies Have Perfect Tensor Product Strategies and are Decidable in Polynomial Time
Published in Communications in Mathematical Physics volume 400, pages 731-791 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We consider 3XOR games with perfect commuting operator strategies. Given any 3XOR game, we show existence of a perfect commuting operator strategy for the game can be decided in polynomial time. Previously this problem was not known to be decidable. Our proof leads to a construction, showing a 3XOR game has a perfect commuting operator strategy iff it has a perfect tensor product strategy using a 3 qubit (8 dimensional) GHZ state. This shows that for perfect 3XOR games the advantage of a quantum strategy over a classical strategy (defined by the quantum-classical bias ratio) is bounded. This is in contrast to the general 3XOR case where the optimal quantum strategies can require high dimensional states and there is no bound on the quantum advantage. To prove these results, we first show equivalence between deciding the value of an XOR game and solving an instance of the subgroup membership problem on a class of right angled Coxeter groups. We then show, in a proof that consumes most of this paper, that the instances of this problem corresponding to 3XOR games can be solved in polynomial time.
Recognizing distributed approval voting forms and correspondences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Each voter $i \in I$ has $α_i$ cards that (s)he distributes among the candidates $a \in A$ as a measure of approval. One (or several) candidate(s) who received the maximum number of cards is (are) elected. We provide polynomial algorithms to recognize voting forms and voting correspondences generated by such voting schemes in cases when either the number of candidates or the number of voters is equal to $2$. We prove that for two voters, if $α_2 \geq α_1-2\geq 0$ then the unique voting correspondence has distinct rows. We also characterize voting forms with distinct rows.
Expanding the quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials in the fundamental basis
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quasisymmetic Macdonald polynomials $G_γ(X; q, t)$ were recently introduced by the first and second authors with Haglund, Mason, and Williams in [3] to refine the symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X; q, t)$ with the property that $G_γ(X; 0, 0)$ equals $QS_γ(X)$, the quasisymmetric Schur polynomial of [9]. We derive an expansion for $G_γ(X; q, t)$ in the fundamental basis of quasisymmetric functions.

Comodule Structures, Equivariant Hopf Structures, and Generalized Schubert Polynomials
In this article, the comodule structure of Chow rings of Flag manifolds $\operatorname{CH}(G/B)$ is described by Schubert cells. Its equivariant version gives rise to a Hopf structure of the equivariant cohomology of flag manifolds $H^*_B(G/B)$. We get two identities of generalized Schubert polynomials as explanations of the geometric facts.

High-entropy dual functions over finite fields and locally decodable codes

We show that for infinitely many primes $p$, there exist dual functions of order $k$ over $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ that cannot be approximated in $L_\infty$-distance by polynomial phase functions of degree $k-1$. This answers in the negative a natural finite-field analog of a problem of Frantzikinakis on $L_\infty$-approximations of dual functions over $\mathbb{N}$ (a.k.a. multiple correlation sequences) by nilsequences.

We give bijective proofs of Monk's rule for Schubert and double Schubert polynomials computed with bumpless pipe dreams. In particular, they specialize to bijective proofs of transition and cotransition formulas of Schubert and double Schubert polynomials, which can be used to establish bijections with ordinary pipe dreams.

Generalized permutahedra and Schubert calculus

We connect generalized permutahedra with Schubert calculus. Thereby, we give sufficient vanishing criteria for Schubert intersection numbers of the flag variety. Our argument utilizes recent developments in the study of Schubitopes, which are Newton polytopes of Schubert polynomials. The resulting tableau test executes in polynomial time.

Standard monomials of $1$-skeleton ideals of multigraphs
Published in Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ on the vertex set $\{0,1,\ldots,n\}$ with the root vertex $0$, Postnikov and Shapiro associated a monomial ideal $\mathcal{M}_G$ in the polynomial ring $R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$ such that $\dim_{\mathbb{K}}(R/\mathcal{M}_G)=\det\widetilde L_G$, where $\widetilde L_G$ is the truncated Laplacian of $G$. Dochtermann introduced the $1$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)}$ of $\mathcal{M}_G$ which satisfies the property that $\dim_{\mathbb{K}}(R/\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)})\ge\det\widetilde Q_G$, where $\widetilde Q_G$ is the truncated signless Laplacian of $G$. In this paper we characterize all subgraphs of the multigraph $K_{n+1}^{a,1}$, in particular all simple graphs $G$, such that $\dim_{\mathbb{K}}(R/\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)})=\det\widetilde Q_G$. Moreover, we give examples of subgraphs $G$ of the complete multigraph $K_{n+1}^{a,b}$, in which the equality $\dim_{\mathbb{K}}(R/\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)})=\det\widetilde Q_G$ holds. We also provide a conjecture on the structure of a general multigraph satisfying the above-mentioned equality.

We provide a non-recursive, combinatorial classification of multiplicity-free skew Schur polynomials. These polynomials are $GL_n$, and $SL_n$, characters of the skew Schur modules. Our result extends work of H. Thomas--A. Yong, and C. Gutschwager, in which they classify the multiplicity-free skew Schur functions.

Counting Parabolic Double Cosets in Symmetric Groups

Billey, Konvalinka, Petersen, Solfstra, and Tenner recently presented a method for counting parabolic double cosets in Coxeter groups, and used it to compute $p_n$, the number of parabolic double cosets in $S_n$, for $n\leq13$. In this paper, we derive a new formula for $p_n$ and an efficient polynomial time algorithm for evaluating this formula. We use these results to compute $p_n$ for $n\leq5000$ and to prove an asymptotic formula for $p_n$ that was conjectured by Billey et al.

Gaussian Asymptotics of Jack Measures on Partitions from Weighted Enumeration of Ribbon Paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we determine two asymptotic results for Jack measures on partitions, a model defined by two specializations of Jack polynomials proposed by Borodin-Olshanski in [European J. Combin. 26.6 (2005): 795-834]. Assuming these two specializations are the same, we derive limit shapes and Gaussian fluctuations for the anisotropic profiles of these random partitions in three asymptotic regimes associated to diverging, fixed, and vanishing values of the Jack parameter. To do so, we introduce a generalization of Motzkin paths we call "ribbon paths", show for general Jack measures that certain joint cumulants are weighted sums of connected ribbon paths on $n$ sites with $n-1+g$ pairings, and derive our two results from the contributions of $(n,g)=(1,0)$ and $(2,0)$, respectively. Our analysis makes use of Nazarov-Sklyanin's spectral theory for Jack polynomials. As a consequence, we give new proofs of several results for Schur measures, Plancherel measures, and Jack-Plancherel measures. In addition, we relate our weighted sums of ribbon paths to the weighted sums of ribbon graphs of maps on non-oriented real surfaces recently introduced by Chapuy-Dolęga.
On the Non-Commuting Graph of the Group $U_{6n}$

A non-commuting graph of a finite group $G$ is a graph whose vertices are non-central elements of $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if they don't commute in $G$. In this paper, we study the non-commuting graph of the group $U_{6n}$ and explore some of its properties including the independent number, clique and chromatic numbers. Also, the general formula of the resolving polynomial of the non-commuting graph of the group $U_{6n}$ are provided. Furthermore, we find the detour index, eccentric connectivity, total eccentricity and independent polynomials of the graph.

Promotion and Cyclic Sieving on Rectangular $δ$-Semistandard Tableaux
Let $δ=(δ_1,\ldots,δ_n)$ be a string of letters $h$ and $v$. We define a Young tableau to be $δ$-semistandard if the entries are weakly increasing along rows and columns, and the entries $i$ form a horizontal strip if $δ_i=h$ and a vertical strip if $δ_i=v$. We define $δ$-promotion on such tableaux via a modified jeu-de-taquin. The first main result is that $δ$-promotion has period $n$ on rectangular $δ$-semistandard tableaux, generalizing the results of Haiman and Rhoades for standard and semistandard tableaux. The second main result states that the set of rectangular $δ$-semistandard tableaux for fixed $δ$ and content $γ$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon with the generalized Kostka polynomial. To do so we follow Fontaine-Kamnitzer and associate to $(δ,γ)$ an $SL_m$-invariant space Inv$(V_{λ^1}\otimes\cdots\otimes V_{λ^n})$ where each $V_{λ^i}$ is an alternating or symmetric representation. We show that the Satake basis of the corresponding invariant space is indexed by the set of tableaux corresponding to $(δ,γ)$ and is permuted by rotation of tensor factors. We then diagonalize the rotation action using the fusion product. This cyclic sieving generalizes the result of Rhoades, and of Fontaine-Kamnitzer (in type A), and is closely related to that of Westbury.
