A palindromicity criterion for the $h$-polynomials of bipartite edge rings
We study a symmetry problem for the $h$-polynomials of edge rings of bipartite graphs. Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and write $h(\mathbb{k}[G];t)=h_0+h_1t+\cdots+h_st^s$. We prove that if $\Bbbk[G]$ is pseudo-Gorenstein and $h_1=h_{s-1}$, then $\Bbbk[G]$ is Gorenstein. Equivalently, under these assumptions the $h$-polynomial of $\Bbbk[G]$ is palindromic. The proof treats the $2$-connected case first by translating the numerical condition $h_1=h_{s-1}$ into a tight-separation condition for non-edges, and then passes to arbitrary bipartite graphs using the block decomposition. We also construct a blockwise Gorenstein closure, obtained by adjoining all non-edges not separated by tight acceptable sets, and show that this construction preserves the next-to-leading coefficient of the $h$-polynomial.
Low Soundness Linearity Testing on the Half-Slice
Let $f: T\to \{ 0,1 \}$ be a Boolean function on the Boolean half-slice, $T$, \ie elements of $\{0,1\}^n$ with Hamming weight $n/2$. We show that if $f(x)+f(y)=f(x+y)$ holds with probability $\frac{1+δ}{2}$ over a uniform pair $(x,y)$ such that $x,y,x+y\in T$, then $f$ agrees with some linear function on at least $\frac{1+δ}{2}-o(1)$ fraction of the points in $T$. More generally, we show that if $f$ passes the natural $k$-query BLR test with probability $\frac{1+δ}{2}$ for any $k\geq3$, then it must agree with some affine function at $\frac{1+δ^{\frac{1}{k-2}}}{2}-o(1)$ fraction of the points in $T$.
The only other known linearity test for the slice in the low soundness regime (i.e., when $δ$ can be arbitrarily small) was given by Kalai, Lifshitz, Minzer, and Ziegler [FOCS'24]. Our result improves upon this result in two significant ways: firstly, it works for $k=3$ queries, instead of requiring $k\geq4$; secondly, our result is sharper, e.g., when $k=4$, we are able to conclude an agreement of $\frac{1+\sqrtδ}{2}-o(1)$ instead of $\frac{1+c\sqrtδ}{2}$ for $c\approx.0035$. In particular, our result matches (up to the $o(1)$ term) the conclusion one obtains over the full hypercube via the classical BLR analysis.
Our main technical contribution is a new dense model theorem using bounds on Krawtchouk polynomials. Using these Krawtchouk polynomial bounds, we also obtain a simple $k$-query test ($k\geq 5$) that avoids any use of the dense model machinery. This simplified test naturally extends to the slice over the $q$-ary hypercube, giving the first such result over larger alphabets.
The V/L recursion for Macdonald's 7th Variation Schur polynomials
We generalize and prove the recursive relation \[ S_λ(V) = \sum_{L\subseteq V\text{ line}} S_λ(V \mathbin{/\mkern-5mu/} L) \] conjectured by I. G. Macdonald for his "7th variation" of the Schur functions. This variation is a family of polynomials over a finite field that mimic the (straight and skew) Schur polynomials using powers of the Frobenius.
Polytopes and posets associated to preorders
Preorder polytopes, defined from preorders on finite sets, are introduced and studied from a lattice point enumeration point of view. They naturally generalize arbor polytopes, recently introduced and studied by the second named author. Preorder polytopes are shown to be lattice polytopes which satisfy a certain duality relating their Ehrhart polynomials with the zeta polynomials of their posets of lattice points. A combinatorial interpretation of the normalized volume of a preorder polytope is proven, together with formulas for the Ehrhart polynomial and the $h^\ast$-polynomial, and a combinatorial interpretation of the latter is conjectured. Several conjectures and results on the lattice point enumeration of arbor polytopes are generalized to preorder polytopes, new conjectures are proposed and new interesting examples of preorder polytopes are studied.
Explicit class of finite-dimensional polynomial algebras with Wronskians over $\mathbb{R}^d$ as $N$-ary Lie brackets: beyond $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$
Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ can be realised by vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^1\ni x$ with polynomial coefficients $1$, $-2x$, $-x^2$; their Wronskian determinants yield the Lie bracket. Likewise, the monomials $1$, $\ldots$, $x^k/k!$, $\ldots$, $x^N/N!$ span finite-dimensional strong homotopy (SH) Lie algebras with the Wronskians $\mathbf{1} \wedge \partial_x \wedge \ldots \wedge \partial_x^{N-1}$ as the $N$-ary brackets. Over dimension $d=2$ with $\mathbb{R}^2\ni(x,y)$ and for the generalised complete Wronskian $W^{d=2}_{k=1}=\mathbf{1}\wedge \partial_x \wedge \partial_y$ of differential order $k=1$ as the ternary bracket, the finite-dimensional polynomial SH-Lie algebras are spanned by $\langle 1$, $x$, $y$, $p\rangle$ with $p\in\{x^2$, $xy$, $y^2\}$. We explicitly describe all finite-dimensional polynomial SH-Lie algebras $\Bbbk_k[{\boldsymbol{x}}]\subseteq \mathcal{A} \subseteq \Bbbk[x^1,\ldots,x^d]$ (over $\Bbbk=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$) with the complete generalised Wronskians $W^{d\geqslant 1}_{k\geqslant 1}$ of order $k$ as $N$-ary bracket: $N=\binom{d+k}{d}$. We obtain a factorisation formula for the generalised Vandermonde determinants which show up in the structure constants of the polynomial algebras $\mathcal{A}$.
On modular inequalities for plane projective curves
We introduce modular inequalities for complements of plane curves, based on a Combinatorial Aomoto complex construction associated with the weak combinatorial type of a curve. We use this as a tool to investigate twisted Alexander polynomials, in particular to study the characteristic polynomial of the Milnor fiber associated to a projective plane curve, i.e. the classical Alexander polynomial. We give criteria for the non-triviality of the resonance in degree $1$, over a positive characteristic field, for curves with quasi fiber--type structure and we compute lower bounds for the multiplicities of some roots of twisted Alexander polynomials for this type of curves. We apply these results to theoretically compute the multiplicities of certain roots of twisted Alexander polynomials for fiber--type curves.
On planar functions over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field of order $q$. For $q$ odd, we investigate the planarity over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$ of the family
$$
f_{E,A,B,C,D}(X) := EX^2+ AX^{q+1}+ BX^{q^2+1}+CX^{2q} +DX^{2q^2}\in \mathbb{F}_{q}[X].
$$
Using results from the theory of q-polynomials, we establish conditions under which these polynomials are planar functions. In particular, we provide characterizations for the planarity property and present new families of planar trinomials, quadrinomials, and pentanomials.
Tribonacci properties of identities, matrices, and determinants
This paper considers the properties of Tribonacci numbers on identities, matrices, and determinants. In the first front part, we obtain several symmetric identities of Tribonacci numbers by a matrix-based approach and binomial inversion technique. In the core section of the latter half, we present a determinant representation of Tribonacci numbers in a slightly modified Toeplitz--Hessenberg form derived from Bell polynomials.
Asymptotic probability of irreducibles III: Anti-SEQ
In this paper, we study the structure of the complete asymptotic expansion of the probability that a large combinatorial object is connected or consists of a given number of connected components. For rapidly growing labeled families of structures, the coefficients involved in these expansions are possibly negative integers. Using species theory, we interpret these coefficients as the difference between the counting sequences of two derivative species of structures. In particular, we show that this difference can be viewed as the counting sequence of the virtual species obtained with the help of an "anti-$\mathrm{SEQ}$" operator applied to the initial family of structures. Applications include $P$-angulated discrete surfaces, quadratic square-tiled surfaces, and non-orientable graph encoded manifolds, which were not reachable with our previous methods.
Moving on to the weighted species, we establish the whole structure of the asymptotic expansion of the probability that a graph is connected in the Erdős-Rényi model $G(n,p)$. Here, the asymptotic coefficients are polynomials in $\frac{p}{1-p}$ and can be described both in terms of simple graphs and irreducible tournaments with ties. We also provide general asymptotic results for sequence and cycle decomposition, as well as the complete asymptotic expansion of the probability that a random labeled tournament with ties is irreducible.
Equality in a Reverse Minkowski Shell Bound for Integral Lattices via Spherical Designs
For a full-rank integral lattice $\mathcal{L}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, Regev and Stephens-Davidowitz proved that \[N_{=k}(\mathcal{L}):=|\{y\in\mathcal{L}:\lVert y\rVert^2=k\}|\le 2\binom{n+2k-2}{2k-1}.\] We classify the equality cases. For $n\ge2$, equality holds if and only if either $k=1$ and $\mathcal{L}\cong\mathbb{Z}^n$, or $n=8$, $k=2$, and $\mathcal{L}\cong E_8$. For $n=1$, equality holds exactly when $\mathcal{L}$ represents $k$.
The proof shows that equality is rigid. Saturation of the shell bound forces the normalized norm-$k$ shell to be an antipodal tight spherical $(4k-1)$-design. The associated Delsarte--Goethals--Seidel annihilator polynomial gives an arithmetic root condition, which isolates $E_8$ at $k=2$, rules out $k=3$, and combines with the Bannai--Damerell/Bannai theorem and an elementary circle argument to exclude all remaining cases in dimension at least $2$.
Inductive approach to chromatic and characteristic polynomials
In this article we describe a new inductive approach to compute the chromatic polynomial of simple graphs and the characteristic polynomial of central hyperplane arrangements.
Framing Triangulations for Arbitrary Integer Flow Polytopes
Framing triangulations of unit flow polytopes have received a great deal of recent study with rich connections to various generalizations of Catalan and Cambrian combinatorics as well as volume and h*-polynomial formulas. This story has largely been restricted to unit flow polytopes, with only two recent works giving descriptions of framing triangulations on classes of non-unit flow polytopes. In this article we introduce the first theory of (unimodular) framing triangulations for arbitrary integer flow polytopes. We will observe some pathologies in general examples which are impossible in the unit case, and propose in response a class of "well-ordered" framing triangulations which we expect to inherit key properties from the unit case while still containing all settings of framing triangulations existing in the literature.
Mubayi's Polynomial-Ideal Conjecture and Cover-Ideal Turán Methods
We revisit a conjecture of Mubayi that was proposed as a hypergraph analogue of the Li--Li algebraic proof of Turán's theorem. The conjecture compares a polynomial ideal generated by multipartite 3-graphs with a differentiated diagonal-vanishing ideal. We show that the proposed equality fails for every non-vacuous choice of parameters. The obstruction is structural: diagonal vanishing does not remember the missing codegree-star condition that drives Mubayi's hypergraph problem.
We then give a replacement in edge-variable rings using monomial cover ideals. For ordinary forbidden-family Turán problems, the cover ideal converts extremal edge counting into an initial-degree computation. For generalized Turán numbers, the same cover ideal encodes the forbidden condition, while the objective becomes a quotient rank on the space spanned by the target-copy monomials.
For Mubayi's core-pair family $\mathcal{K}_{\ell}^{(r)}$, this cover ideal has an explicit missing codegree-star form. A Hilbert-function symmetrization theorem for square-zero quadratic monomial quotients computes its initial degree and recovers Mubayi's hypergraph Turán theorem.
Constructing Maximal Bumpless Pipedreams for Double Grothendieck Polynomials
Pipedreams and bumpless pipedreams are two combinatorial models that compute double Grothendieck polynomials. While studying matrix Schubert varieties, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt defined a permutation statistic$\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ that captures the leading monomial of the top-degree components of a Grothendieck polynomial. Combinatorially, their result implies that there exists a unique pipedream (or bumpless pipedream) with row weight $\mathsf{rajcode}(w)$ and column weight $\mathsf{rajcode}(w^{-1})$. A construction of such a pipedream was subsequently given by Chou and Yu. In this paper, we resolve the bumpless pipedream version of this problem by providing an explicit algorithm.
On The Morse Ensemble Polynomial Of Simplicial Complexes
We introduce the \emph{Morse ensemble polynomial} $\ME_K(z_0,\ldots,z_d)$ of a finite simplicial complex $K$, defined as the generating function $\ME_K = \sum_M \prod_i z_i^{c_i(M)}$ over all acyclic matchings $M$ on the face poset of $K$, where $c_i(M)$ counts critical $i$-simplices. This polynomial records the complete distribution of Morse vectors across all discrete Morse functions on $K$, and is an isomorphism invariant of simplicial complexes.
Our main results are the following. \textbf{(I) The Laplacian Formula}: for any connected graph $G$, $\ME_G = z_1^{m-n}\det(z_0z_1\,I_n + L_G)$, identifying $\ME_G$ as a complete Laplacian spectral invariant and showing $\ME_G$ to be incomparable with the Tutte polynomial. \textbf{(II) The Top-Face Recursion}: adding a $d$-simplex $σ$ (with $\partialσ\subset K$) to a complex $K$ gives a recursion $\ME_{K\cup\{σ\}} = z_d\cdot\ME_K + \sum_{τ\precσ}(\ME_{P(K')\setminus\{σ,τ\}}-F(K,σ,τ))$. The correction term is controlled by the top incidence graph: an incidence-separation criterion detects exactly when $F=0$, and the incidence distance gives the leading obstruction term. As a topological application, this recursion gives exact coefficient recursions for perfect and optimal discrete Morse vectors. \textbf{(III) The independence ME polynomial} $Φ(G) := \ME_{\mathrm{Ind}(G)}$ is a fine graph invariant which strictly refines the graph-level Morse ensemble $\ME_G$, separates examples not distinguished by $T_G$ and $I(G;t)$, and records collapse-level information of $\mathrm{Ind}(G)$ through coefficients such as $[z_0]Φ(G)$.
Explicit Construction of Polytopes whose Ehrhart Polynomials Realize any Given Sign Pattern
In Ehrhart theory, the well-konwn sign pattern problem asks: given a positive integer $d\geq 3$ and integers $1 \leq i_1 < \cdots < i_k \leq d-2$, does there exist a $d$-dimensional integral polytope $\mathcal{P}$ such that in its Ehrhart polynomial $i(\mathcal{P}, t)$ the coefficients of $t^{i_1}, \ldots, t^{i_k}$ are negative, while the remaining coefficients are positive? This problem was proposed by Hibi, Higashitani, Tsuchiya, and Yoshida. In this paper, we first construct a class of simplices $\mathcal{S}_d(m)$ whose Ehrhart polynomial has leading coefficient $m$ and all remaining coefficients fixed positive constants. Then, using the Cartesian product of $\mathcal{S}_d(m)$ and the Reeve tetrahedron, we obtain the first complete solution to the sign pattern problem. Finally, in attacking the sign pattern problem, we provide a fast algorithm for computing the $h^*$-polynomial of a class of simplices $Δ(0,q)$.
The INIEP: Irreducible and Positive Realizations
Our focus is upon {\it irreducible} nonnegative $n$-by-$n$ matrix realizations of nonnegatively realizable spectra or, equivalently, characteristic polynomials. After giving some general background, we make some useful new observations and show the existence of irreducible nonnegative realizations in some general cases. Then, we focus on $n<5$, where the NIEP is solved. Finally, we focus on the trace 0 case and, using graph theoretic methods, characterize nonnegative irreducible realizability among realizable polynomials. The closely related problem of positive realizations, for trace positive spectra, is also discussed.
Combinatorics and Asymptotics of Positive Systems of Linear Catalytic Equations
We provide a complete combinatorial and asymptotic analysis of positive linear systems of equations in one catalytic variable that appear in several combinatorial problems such as in lattice path counting or stack-sortable permutation counting.
We show that the corresponding generating functions satisfy a positive polynomial system of equations (which is associated to a context-free grammar). Furthermore we prove a universal asymptotic behaviour.
On the structure and generic non-Cartesianity of polynomials in product spaces
We develop a general theory of Cartesian and non-Cartesian polynomials on products of complex spaces $\mathbb{C}^{n_1} \times \cdots \times \mathbb{C}^{n_k}$. We prove that, for any fixed degree $d \ge 2$, a (Zariski) generic polynomial is non-Cartesian in a broad range of dimensions, establishing that Cartesian structure is highly exceptional.
We further introduce effective sufficient criteria for a polynomial to be non-Cartesian. Moreover, we show that being (non)-Catersian can be decided algorithmically via Gröbner basis methods and quantitative forms of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz.
As an application, we connect the non-Cartesian condition to incidence geometry, obtaining sharp intersection bounds and constructing extremal configurations that demonstrate the optimality of these estimates.
Fast computation of Ehrhart polynomials of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes via Macdonald reciprocity
We describe an efficient method for computing the Ehrhart polynomial of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes arising from Kostka coefficients. The key idea is to exploit Ehrhart--Macdonald reciprocity: evaluating the Ehrhart polynomial at negative integers reduces to counting \emph{strict} Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns, which are often zero or very small for low dilations. Combined with an adaptive strategy that chooses the cheapest evaluation point (positive or negative) at each step, this yields substantial practical speedups compared to general-purpose polytope software. We benchmark against $\mathtt{OSCAR}$/$\mathtt{polymake}$, and illustrate the broader applicability of the method through order polytopes and permutation posets. The implementation is available in the Rust \texttt{kostka} package, with related optimizations also incorporated in the new \texttt{lrcalc-rs} replacement for \texttt{lrcalc}.
