Plethysm and the algebra of uniform block permutations
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 5, pp. 1165-1203 • View PublicationBIB
We study the representation theory of the uniform block permutation algebra in the context of the representation theory of factorizable inverse monoids. The uniform block permutation algebra is a subalgebra of the partition algebra and is also known as the party algebra. We compute its characters and provide a Frobenius characteristic map to symmetric functions. This reveals connections of the characters of the uniform block permutation algebra and plethysms of Schur functions.

Skew Schur polynomials and cyclic sieving phenomenon
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k$ and $m$ be positive integers and $λ/μ$ a skew partition. We compute the principal specialization of the skew Schur polynomials $s_{λ/μ}(x_1, \ldots, x_{k})$ modulo $q^m-1$ under suitable conditions. We interpret the results thus obtained from the viewpoint of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on semistandard Young skew tableaux of shape $λ/μ$. As an application, we deal with evaluations of the principal specialization of the skew Schur polynomials at roots of unity.

LLT cumulants and graph coloring
Published in Electron. J. Combin., 29(4), Paper 4.5, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to introduce a new family of quasi-symmetric functions called LLT cumulants and discuss its properties. We define LLT cumulants using the algebraic framework for conditional cumulants and we prove that the Macdonald cumulant has an explicit positive expansion in terms of LLT cumulants of ribbon shapes, generalizing the classical decomposition of Macdonald polynomials. We also find a natural combinatorial interpretation of the LLT cumulant of a given directed graph as a weighted generating function of colorings of its subgraphs. We use this graph theoretical framework to prove various positivity results. This includes monomial positivity, positivity in fundamental quasisymmetric functions and related positivity of the coefficients of Schur polynomials indexed by hook shapes. We also prove $e$-positivity for vertical-shape LLT cumulants, after the shift of variable $q \to q+1$, which refines a recent result of Alexandersson and Sulzgruber. All these results give evidence towards Schur-positivity of LLT cumulants, which we conjecture here. We prove that this conjecture implies Schur-positivity of Macdonald cumulants, and we give more evidence by proving the conjecture for LLT cumulants of melting lollipops that refines a recent result of Huh, Nam and Yoo.

A super Littlewood--Richardson type rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a super version of the Littlewood--Richardson rule for super Schur functions over signed alphabets. We give in particular combinatorial interpretations of the super Littlewood--Richardson coefficients using the properties of super Young tableaux, which have found rich applications in representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and mathematical physics.
Dens, nests and the Loehr-Warrington conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a companion paper, we introduced raising operator series called Catalanimals. Among them are Schur Catalanimals, which represent Schur functions inside copies $Λ(X^{m,n})\subset \mathcal{E} $ of the algebra of symmetric functions embedded in the elliptic Hall algebra $\mathcal{E} $ of Burban and Schiffmann. Here we obtain a combinatorial formula for symmetric functions given by a class of Catalanimals that includes the Schur Catalanimals. Our formula is expressed as a weighted sum of LLT polynomials, with terms indexed by configurations of nested lattice paths called nests, having endpoints and bounding constraints controlled by data called a den. Applied to Schur Catalanimals for the alphabets $X^{m,1}$ with $n=1$, our `nests in a den' formula proves the combinatorial formula conjectured by Loehr and Warrington for $\nabla^m s_{μ}$ as a weighted sum of LLT polynomials indexed by systems of nested Dyck paths. When $n$ is arbitrary, our formula establishes an $(m,n)$ version of the Loehr-Warrington conjecture. In the case where each nest consists of a single lattice path, the nests in a den formula reduces to our previous shuffle theorem for paths under any line. Both this and the $(m,n)$ Loehr-Warrington formula generalize the $(km,kn)$ shuffle theorem proven by Carlsson and Mellit (for $n=1$) and Mellit. Our formula here unifies these two generalizations.

How to Draw a Correlation Function
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 106, 35 pages • View PublicationBIB
We discuss connection between the XX0 Heisenberg spin chain and some aspects of enumerative combinatorics. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the theory of symmetric functions to the calculation of the correlation functions. We provide a combinatorial derivation of the dynamical auto-correlation functions and visualise them in terms of nests of self-avoiding lattice paths. Asymptotics of the auto-correlation functions are obtained in the double scaling limit provided that the evolution parameter is large.

Highest weight crystals for Schur Q-functions
Published in Combinatorial Theory 3 (2023), no. 2., #6 • View PublicationBIB
Work of Grantcharov et al. develops a theory of abstract crystals for the queer Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{q}_n$. Such $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals form a monoidal category in which the connected normal objects have unique highest weight elements and characters that are Schur $P$-polynomials. This article studies a modified form of this category, whose connected normal objects again have unique highest weight elements but now possess characters that are Schur $Q$-polynomials. The crystals in this category have some interesting features not present for ordinary $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals. For example, there is an extra crystal operator, a different tensor product, and an action of the hyperoctahedral group exchanging highest and lowest weight elements. There are natural examples of $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystal structures on certain families of shifted tableaux and factorized reduced words. We describe extended forms of these structures that give similar examples in our new category.

Orthosymplectic Cauchy identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give bijective proofs of orthosymplectic analogues of the Cauchy identity and dual Cauchy identity for orthosymplectic Schur functions. To do so, we present two insertion algorithms; these are orthosymplectic versions of Berele's symplectic insertion algorithms, which were used by Sundaram to give bijective proofs of Cauchy identities for symplectic Schur functions.

Expanding K-theoretic Schur Q-functions
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 6 (2023) no. 6, 1419-1445 • View PublicationBIB
We derive several identities involving Ikeda and Naruse's $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions. Our main result is a formula conjectured by Lewis and the second author which expands each $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-function in terms of $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions. This formula extends to some more general identities relating the skew and dual versions of both power series. We also prove a shifted version of Yeliussizov's skew Cauchy identity for symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. Finally, we discuss some conjectural formulas for the dual $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions of Nakagawa and Naruse. We show that one such formula would imply a basis property expected of the $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions.

Ninth variation of classical group characters of type A-D and Littlewood identities
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 30 (2023), no. 4, Paper No. 4.9, 39 pp • View PublicationBIB
We introduce certain generalisations of the characters of the classical Lie groups, extending the recently defined factorial characters of Foley and King. In this extension, the factorial powers are replaced with an arbitrary sequence of polynomials, as in Sergeev-Veselov's generalised Schur functions and Okada's generalised Schur P- and Q-functions. We also offer a similar generalisation for the rational Schur functions. We derive Littlewood-type identities for our generalisations. These identities allow us to give new (unflagged) Jacobi-Trudi identities for the Foley-King factorial characters and for rational versions of the factorial Schur functions. We also propose an extension of the original Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions to the case of symplectic and orthogonal characters, which helps us prove Nägelsbach-Kostka identities.

A Vertex Model for Supersymmetric LLT Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a Yang-Baxter integrable vertex model, which can be realized as a degeneration of a vertex model introduced by Aggarwal, Borodin, and Wheeler. From this vertex model, we construct a certain class of partition functions that we show are essentially equal to the super ribbon functions of Lam. Using the vertex model formalism, we give proofs of many properties of these polynomials, namely a Cauchy identity and generalizations of known identities for supersymmetric Schur polynomials.
A Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Grothendieck polynomials of Grassmannian type
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, Vol. 28 (2024), 155-168 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Grothendieck polynomials appearing in the K-theory of Grassmannians, which are analogs of Schur polynomials. This paper aims to establish a version of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Grothendieck polynomials of the Grassmannian type. This rule allows us to express the product of a Grothendieck polynomial with a power sum symmetric polynomial into a linear combination of other Grothendieck polynomials.

Lattice Models, Hamiltonian Operators, and Symmetric Functions
We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation. The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models. Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)

Relating three combinatorial formulas for type $A$ Whittaker functions
In this work we study the relationship between several combinatorial formulas for type $A$ spherical Whittaker functions. These are spherical functions on $p$-adic groups, which arise in the theory of automorphic forms. They depend on a parameter $t$, and are a specialization of Macdonald polynomials, and further specialize to Schur polynomials upon setting $t=0$. There are three types of formulas for these polynomials. The first formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, works in arbitrary Lie type, and is derived from the Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second one is in terms of certain fillings of Young diagrams, and is derived from, or is analogous to the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The third formula is in terms of the classical semistandard Young tableaux. We study the way in which each such formula is obtained from the previous one by combining terms $-$ a phenomenon called compression. No such results existed in the case of Whittaker functions.
Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

An insertion algorithm for multiplying Demazure characters by Schur polynomials
We introduce an insertion algorithm on Kohnert's combinatorial model for Demazure characters, generalizing Robinson--Schensted--Knuth insertion on tableaux. Our new insertion yields an explicit, nonnegative formula expressing the product of a Demazure character and a Schur polynomial as a sum of Schubert characters, partially resolving Polo's conjecture that the tensor product of Demazure modules admits a Schubert filtration.

$b$-monotone Hurwitz numbers: Virasoro constraints, BKP hierarchy, and $O(N)$-BGW integral
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2023, Issue 14, July 2023, Pages 12172-12230 • View PublicationBIB
We study a $b$-deformation of monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We give an evolution equation for this model and derive from it Virasoro constraints, thereby proving a conjecture of Féray on Jack characters. A combinatorial model of non-oriented monotone Hurwitz maps which generalizes monotone transposition factorizations is provided. In the case $b=1$ we obtain an explicit Schur expansion of the model and show that it obeys the BKP integrable hierarchy. This Schur expansion also proves a conjecture of Oliveira--Novaes relating zonal polynomials with irreducible representations of $O(N)$. We also relate the model to an $O(N)$ version of the Brézin--Gross--Witten integral, which we solve explicitly in terms of Pfaffians in the case of even multiplicities.

Plethysms of Chromatic and Tutte Symmetric Functions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2022), P3.28 • View PublicationBIB
Plethysm is a fundamental operation in symmetric function theory, derived directly from its connection with representation theory. However, it does not admit a simple combinatorial interpretation, and finding coefficients of Schur function plethysms is a major open question. In this paper, we introduce a graph-theoretic interpretation for any plethysm based on the chromatic symmetric function. We use this interpretation to give simple proofs of new and previously known plethystic identities, as well as chromatic symmetric function identities.

Inequality of a class of near-ribbon skew Schur Q-functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
While equality of skew Schur functions is well understood, the problem of determining when two skew Schur $Q$ functions are equal is still largely open. It has been studied in the case of ribbon shapes in 2008 by Barekat and van Willigenburg, and this paper approaches the problem for near-ribbon shapes, formed by adding one box to a ribbon skew shape. We particularly consider frayed ribbons, that is, the near-ribbons whose shifted skew shape is not an ordinary skew shape. We conjecture, with evidence, that all Schur $Q$ functions of frayed ribbon shape are distinct up to antipodal reflection. We prove this conjecture for several infinite families of frayed ribbons, using a new approach via the "lattice walks" version of the shifted Littlewood-Richardson rule discovered in 2018 by Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo.
