Averaging method in combinatorics of symmetric polynomials
Published in Phys.Lett. B843 (2023) 138037 • View PublicationBIB
We elaborate on the recent suggestion to consider averaging of Cauchy identities for the Schur functions over power sum variables. This procedure has apparent parallels with the Borel transform, only it changes the number of combinatorial factors like $d_R$ in the sums over Young diagrams instead of just factorials in ordinary sums over numbers. It provides a universal view on a number of previously known, but seemingly random identities.

Hurwitz numbers for reflection groups $B$ and $D$
We are building a theory of simple Hurwitz numbers for the reflection groups B and D parallel to the classical theory for the symmetric group. We also study analogs of the cut-and-join operators. An algebraic description of Hurwitz numbers and an explicit formula for them in terms of Schur polynomials are provided. We also relate Hurwitz numbers for B and D to ribbon decomposition of surfaces with boundary -- a similar result for the symmetric group was proved earlier by Yu.Burman and the author. Finally, the generating function of B-Hurwitz numbers is shown to give rise to two independent tau-function of the KP hierarchy.
Bounded Littlewood identities for cylindric Schur functions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 378 (2025), 6765-6829 • View PublicationBIB
The identities which are in the literature often called ``bounded Littlewood identities" are determinantal formulas for the sum of Schur functions indexed by partitions with bounded height. They have interesting combinatorial consequences such as connections between standard Young tableaux of bounded height, lattice walks in a Weyl chamber, and noncrossing matchings. In this paper we prove affine analogs of the bounded Littlewood identities. These are determinantal formulas for sums of cylindric Schur functions. We also study combinatorial aspects of these identities. As a consequence we obtain an unexpected connection between cylindric standard Young tableaux and \( r \)-noncrossing and \( s \)-nonnesting matchings.

Free Fermionic Schur Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new family of Schur functions $s_{λ/μ;a,b}(x/y)$ that depend on two sets of variables and two sequences of parameters. These free fermionic Schur functions have a hidden symmetry between the two sets of parameters that allows us to generalize and unify factorial, supersymmetric, and dual Schur functions from literature. We then prove that these functions satisfy the supersymmetric Cauchy identity $$ \sum_λs_{λ;a,b}(x/y)\widehat{s}_{λ;a,b}(z/w) = \prod_{i,j}\frac{1+y_iz_j}{1-x_iz_j}\frac{1+x_iw_j}{1-y_iw_j}, $$ where $\widehat{s}_{λ;a,b}(z/w) = s_{λ';b',a'}(w/z)$ are the dual functions. Our approach is based on the integrable six vertex model with free fermionic Boltzmann weights. We show that these weights satisfy the \textit{refined Yang-Baxter equation}, which allows us to prove well-known properties of Schur functions: supersymmetry, combinatorial descriptions, the Jacobi-Trudi identity, the Nägelsbach-Kostka formula, the Giambelli formula, the Ribbon formula, the Weyl determinant formula, the Berele-Regev factorization, dual Cauchy identity, the flagged determinant formula, and many others. We emphasize that many of these results are novel even in special cases.

The Kromatic Symmetric Function: A $K$-theoretic Analogue of $X_G$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur functions are a basis of the symmetric function ring that represent Schubert cohomology classes for Grassmannians. Replacing the cohomology ring with $K$-theory yields a rich combinatorial theory of inhomogeneous deformations, where Schur functions are replaced by their $K$-analogues, the basis of symmetric Grothendieck functions. We introduce and initiate a theory of the Kromatic symmetric function $\overline{X}_G$, a $K$-theoretic analogue of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$. The Kromatic symmetric function is a generating series for graph colorings in which vertices may receive any nonempty set of distinct colors such that neighboring color sets are disjoint. Our main result lifts a theorem of Gasharov (1996) to this setting, showing that when $G$ is a claw-free incomparability graph, $\overline{X}_G$ is a positive sum of symmetric Grothendieck functions. This result suggests a topological interpretation of Gasharov's theorem. We then show that the Kromatic symmetric functions of path graphs are not positive in any of several $K$-analogues of the $e$-basis of symmetric functions, demonstrating that the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) does not have such a lift to $K$-theory and so is unlikely to be amenable to a topological perspective. We also define a vertex-weighted extension of $\overline{X}_G$ and show that it admits a deletion--contraction relation. Finally, we give a $K$-analogue for $\overline{X}_G$ of the classic monomial-basis expansion of $X_G$.

Combinatorial reciprocity for non-intersecting paths
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, 3(2), 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a combinatorial reciprocity theorem for the enumeration of non-intersecting paths in a linearly growing sequence of acyclic planar networks. We explain two applications of this theorem: reciprocity for fans of bounded Dyck paths, and reciprocity for Schur function evaluations with repeated values.

Multivariate correlation inequalities for $P$-partitions
Published in Pacific J. Math. 323 (2023) 223-252 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Lam--Pylyavskyy inequalities for Schur functions, we give a far reaching multivariate generalization of Fishburn's correlation inequality for the number of linear extensions of posets. We then give a multivariate generalization of the Daykin--Daykin--Paterson inequality proving log-concavity of the order polynomial of a poset. We also prove a multivariate $P$-partition version of the cross-product inequality by Brightwell--Felsner--Trotter. The proofs are based on a multivariate generalization of the Ahlswede--Daykin inequality.

Plethystic Murnaghan-Nakayama rule via vertex operators
Published in J. Alg. Combinatorics (2025) 62:57 • View PublicationBIB
Based on the vertex operator realization of the Schur functions, a determinant-type plethystic Murnaghan--Nakayama rule is obtained and utilized to derive a general formula of the expansion coefficients of $s_ν$ in the plethysm product $(p_{n}\circ h_{k})s_μ$. Meanwhile, the equivalence between our algebraic rule and the combinatorial one is also established. As an application, we provide a simple way to compute the generalized Waring formula.

Universal characters twisted by roots of unity
Published in Algebr. Comb. 6 (2023), no. 6, 1653-1676 • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of Littlewood gives a factorisation for the Schur function at a set of variables "twisted" by a primitive $t$-th root of unity, characterised by the core and quotient of the indexing partition. While somewhat neglected, it has proved to be an important tool in the character theory of the symmetric group, the cyclic sieving phenomenon, plethysms of symmetric functions and more. Recently, similar factorisations for the characters of the groups $\mathrm{O}(2n,\mathbb{C})$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1,\mathbb{C})$ were obtained by Ayyer and Kumari. We lift these results to the level of universal characters, which has the benefit of making the proofs simpler and the structure of the factorisations more transparent. Our approach also allows for universal character extensions of some factorisations of a different nature originally discovered by Ciucu and Krattenthaler, and generalised by Ayyer and Behrend.

3D Bosons, 3-Jack polynomials and affine Yangian of ${\mathfrak{gl}}(1)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
3D (3 dimensional) Young diagrams are a generalization of 2D Young diagrams. In this paper, We consider 3D Bosons and 3-Jack polynomials. We associate three parameters $h_1,h_2,h_3$ to $y,x,z$-axis respectively. 3-Jack polynomials are polynomials of $P_{n,j}, n\geq j$ with coefficients in $\mathbb C(h_1,h_2,h_3)$, which are the generalization of Schur functions and Jack polynomials to 3D case. Similar to Schur functions, 3-Jack polynomials can also be determined by the vertex operators and the Pieri formulas.

A generalization of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $K$-$k$-Schur and $k$-Schur functions
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, volume 2024, issue 6 (2024), 4738-4766 • View PublicationBIB
The $K$-$k$-Schur functions and $k$-Schur functions appeared in the study of $K$-theoretic and affine Schubert Calculus as polynomial representatives of Schubert classes. In this paper, we introduce a new family of symmetric functions $\mathcal{F}_λ^{(k)}$, that generalizes the constructions via the Pieri rule of $K$-$k$-Schur functions and $ k$-Schur functions. Then we obtain the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the generalized functions. The rule is described explicitly in the cases of $K$-$k$-Schur functions and $k$-Schur functions, with concrete descriptions and algorithms for coefficients. Our work recovers the result of Bandlow, Schilling, and Zabrocki for $k$-Schur functions, and explains it as a degeneration of the rule for $K$-$k$-Schur functions. In particular, many other special cases and connections promise to be detailed in the future.

Skew hook Schur functions and the cyclic sieving phenomenon
Fix an integer $t \geq 2$ and a primitive $t^{\text{th}}$ root of unity $ω$. We consider the specialized skew hook Schur polynomial $\text{hs}_{λ/μ}(X,ωX,\dots,ω^{t-1}X/Y,ωY,\dots,ω^{t-1}Y)$, where $ω^k X=(ω^k x_1, \dots, ω^k x_n)$, $ω^k Y=(ω^k y_1, \dots, ω^k y_m)$ for $0 \leq k \leq t-1$. We characterize the skew shapes $λ/μ$ for which the polynomial vanishes and prove that the nonzero polynomial factorizes into smaller skew hook Schur polynomials. Then we give a combinatorial interpretation of $\text{hs}_{λ/μ}(1,ω^d,\dots,ω^{d(tn-1)}/1,ω^d,\dots,ω^{d(tm-1)})$, for all divisors $d$ of $t$, in terms of ribbon supertableaux. Lastly, we use the combinatorial interpretation to prove the cyclic sieving phenomenon on the set of semistandard supertableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for odd $t$. Using a similar proof strategy, we give a complete generalization of a result of Lee--Oh (arXiv: 2112.12394, 2021) for the cyclic sieving phenomenon on the set of skew SSYT conjectured by Alexandersson--Pfannerer--Rubey--Uhlin (Forum Math. Weak Bruhat interval modules for genomic Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $λ$ be a partition of a positive integer $n$. The genomic Schur function $U_λ$ was introduced by Pechenik--Yong in the context of the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. Recently, Pechenik provided a positive combinatorial formula for the fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of $U_λ$ in terms of increasing gapless tableaux. In this paper, for each $1 \le m \le n$, we construct an $H_m(0)$-module $\mathbf{G}_{λ;m}$ whose image under the quasisymmetric characteristic is the $m$th degree homogeneous component of $U_λ$ by defining an $H_m(0)$-action on increasing gapless tableaux. We provide a method to assign a permutation to each increasing gapless tableau, and use this assignment to decompose $\mathbf{G}_{λ;m}$ into a direct sum of weak Bruhat interval modules. Furthermore, we determine the projective cover of each summand of the direct sum decomposition.

Cylindric $P$-Tableaux for (3+1)-Free Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a $(3+1)$-free poset $P$, we define a hybrid of $P$-tableaux and cylindric tableaux called cylindric $P$-tableaux. We introduce $P$-analogs of cylindric Schur functions, defined by a determinantal formula, and prove that they are the weight generating functions of cylindric $P$-tableaux. We deduce that certain sums of the $e$-expansion coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function $X_{inc(P)}$ are positive. This improves on Gasharov's theorem on the Schur positivity of $X_{inc(P)}$ and gives further evidence for the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture.
Noncommutative Schur functions for posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The machinery of noncommutative Schur functions is a general approach to Schur positivity of symmetric functions initiated by Fomin-Greene. Hwang recently adapted this theory to posets to give a new approach to the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture. We further develop this theory to prove that the symmetric function associated to any $P$-Knuth equivalence graph is Schur positive. This settles a conjecture of Kim and the third author, and refines results of Gasharov, Shareshian-Wachs, and Hwang on the Schur positivity of chromatic symmetric functions.

On a conjecture on 2-reduced Schur functions and Schur's Q-functions
Motivated by Sato and Mori's work on the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the modified KdV equation, Mizukawa, Nakajima, and Yamada made a conjecture on 2-reduced Schur functions and Schur's Q-functions. The conjecture claims that certain sums of products of a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient and two 2-reduced Schur functions are equal to Schur's Q-functions up to a scalar multiple. In this paper we give a proof of the conjecture in cases which have not been proved yet. We introduce a new expression of Schur's Q-functions and use it to prove the conjecture. Combinatorics of the inverse Kostka matrix is also used. We also provide consideration of the conjecture in general case.
3-Plethysms of homogeneous and elementary symmetric functions
We introduce the new combinatorial approach of plethystic type of tableaux, as a method to understand coefficients of Schur functions appearing in plethysms $s_ν[h_λ]$ and $s_ν[e_λ]$, for any partitions $λ$ and $ν$. We first give general results about this approach, then use results on tableaux, ribbon tableaux and integer points in polytopes to understand the case where $ν$ is a partition of $3$ and $λ$ has one part. We then use a \textit{Kronecker map} to extend these results to any partition $λ$.

Revisiting Jacobi-Trudi identities via the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$
By interpreting Kostka numbers as tensor product multiplicities in the BGG category O for the special linear Lie algebras, we provide a new proof of the classical Jacobi--Trudi identities for skew Schur polynomials, derived from the celebrated Weyl character formula. We re-establish the Schur positivity of certain truncations in the Jacobi--Trudi expansion of skew Schur polynomials and obtain Schur positivity results for similar truncations in the Jacobi--Trudi-type expansion of the product of two Schur polynomials. Furthermore, we interpret the coefficients in the Schur polynomial expansions of these Jacobi--Trudi truncations as tensor product multiplicities in the BGG category O.

Universal symplectic/orthogonal functions and general branching rules
In this paper, we first introduce a family of universal symplectic functions $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ that include symplectic Schur functions $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm})$, odd symplectic characters $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};z)$, universal symplectic characters $sp_λ(\mathbf{z})$ and intermediate symplectic characters as subfamilies. We then realize the universal symplectic functions by vertex operators, which naturally lead to their skew versions, and show that $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ obey the general branching rules. This also gives the Gelfand-Tsetlin representations of odd symplectic characters and a transition formula between odd symplectic characters and symplectic Schur functions. Secondly we introduce a family of universal orthogonal functions $o_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ and their skew versions in a similar manner, and we provide their vertex operator realizations and obtain transition formulas and the branching rule. The universal orthogonal functions $o_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ generalize orthogonal Schur functions $o_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm})$, odd orthogonal Schur functions $so_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm})$, universal orthogonal characters $o_λ(\mathbf{z})$ as well as intermediate orthogonal characters. Thirdly, we give vertex operator realizations for the $CB$-interpolating Schur functions $s^{CB}_λ(x;β)$ introduced by Bisi and Zygouras (Adv. Math., 2022) and the $DB$-interpolating Schur functions $s^{DB}_λ(x;β)$ interpolating between characters of type $D$ and $B$. As an application, we show $s^{CB}_λ(x;β)$ are equal to the orthosymplectic Schur polynomials $spo_λ(x/β)$, thus give a short proof of the generalization of the Brent-Krattenthaler-Warnaar identity obtained by Kumari (arXiv:2401.01723).
The mystery of plethysm coefficients
Published in Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics (PSPUM) 110 (2024), 275-292 • View PublicationBIB
Composing two representations of the general linear groups gives rise to Littlewood's (outer) plethysm. On the level of characters, this poses the question of finding the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. A combinatorial interpretation for the Schur expansion coefficients of the plethysm of two Schur functions is, in general, still an open problem. We identify a proof technique of combinatorial representation theory, which we call the "$s$-perp trick", and point out several examples in the literature where this idea is used. We use the $s$-perp trick to give algorithms for computing monomial and Schur expansions of symmetric functions. In several special cases, these algorithms are more efficient than those currently implemented in {\sc SageMath}.
