James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions
Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory. Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis. Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.

Hook-Shape Immanant Characters from Stanley-Stembridge Characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Schur-positivity of monomial immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices, in particular whether a non-negative coefficient of the trivial Schur function implies non-negative coefficients for other Schur functions in said immanants. We prove that this true for hook-shape Schur functions using combinatorial methods in a representation theory setting. Our main theorem proves that hook-shape immanant characters can be written as finite non-negative integer sums of Stanley-Stembridge characters, and provides an explicit combinatorial formula for these sums. This resolves a special case of a longstanding conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge that posits such a sum exists for all immanant characters. We also provide several simplifications for computing immanant characters, and several corollaries applying the main result to cases where the coefficient of the trivial Schur function in monomial immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices is known to be non-negative.

Intersection theoretic inequalities via Lorentzian polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore the applications of Lorentzian polynomials to the fields of algebraic geometry, analytic geometry and convex geometry. In particular, we establish a series of intersection theoretic inequalities, which we call rKT property, with respect to $m$-positive classes and Schur classes. We also study its convexity variants -- the geometric inequalities for $m$-convex functions on the sphere and convex bodies. Along the exploration, we prove that any finite subset on the closure of the cone generated by $m$-positive classes can be endowed with a polymatroid structure by a canonical numerical-dimension type function, extending our previous result for nef classes; and we prove Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for valuations of Schur type. We also establish various analogs of sumset estimates (Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequalities) from additive combinatorics in our contexts.

Some combinatorial interpretations of the Macdonald identities for affine root systems
We explore some connections between vectors of integers and integer partitions seen as bi-infinite words. This methodology enables us to give a combinatorial interpretation of the Macdonald identities for affine root systems of the seven infinite families in terms of symplectic and special orthogonal Schur functions. From these results, we are able to derive $q$-Nekrasov--Okounkov formulas associated to each family. Nevertheless we only give results for types $\tilde{C}$ and $\tilde{C}^{\vee}$, and give a sketch of the proof for type $\tilde{C}$.

Asymptotics of dimer coverings on free boundary rail-yard graphs
Rail-yard graphs are a general class of graphs introduced in \cite{bbccr} on which the random dimer coverings form Schur processes. We study asymptotic limits of random dimer coverings on rail yard graphs with free boundary conditions on both the left boundary and the right boundary (double-sided free boundary) when the mesh sizes of the graphs go to 0. Each dimer covering corresponds to a sequence of interlacing partitions starting with an arbitrary partition and ending in an arbitrary partition. Under the assumption that the probability of each dimer covering is proportional to the product of weights of present edges, we obtain the moment formula for the height function which includes an infinite product. By passing down to the scaling limit, we compute the limit shape (law of large numbers) of the rescaled height functions and prove the convergence of unrescaled height fluctuations to a diffeomorphic image of the restriction of the 0-boundary Gaussian free field (central limit theorem) on the upper half plane to a subset. Applications include the limit shape and height fluctuations for free boundary steep tilings as proposed in \cite{BCC17}. The technique to obtain these results is to analyze a class of Macdonald processes with dual specializations, subject to further complexities arising from the infinite product in the moment formula. We also obtain a new algorithm to sample double-sided free boundary dimer coverings on rail-yard graphs, which fulfills an open problem in \cite{bbbccv14}.

Boundary current fluctuations for the half space ASEP and six vertex model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study fluctuations of the current at the boundary for the half space asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and the height function of the half space six vertex model at the boundary at large times. We establish a phase transition depending on the asymptotic density of particles at the boundary, with GSE and GOE limits as well as the Baik--Rains crossover distribution near the critical point. This was previously known for half space last passage percolation, and recently established for the half space log-gamma polymer and KPZ equation in the groundbreaking work of Imamura, Mucciconi, and Sasamoto. The proof uses the underlying algebraic structure of these models in a crucial way to obtain exact formulas. In particular, we show a relationship between the half space six vertex model and a half space Hall--Littlewood measure with two boundary parameters, which is then matched to a free boundary Schur process via a new identity of symmetric functions. Fredholm Pfaffian formulas are established for the half space ASEP and six vertex model, indicating a hidden free fermionic structure.

Murnaghan-Nakayama rule and spin bitrace for the Hecke-Clifford Algebra
Published in Int. Mat. Res. Not. IMRN 19 (2023), 17060-17099 • View PublicationBIB
A Pfaffian-type Murnaghan-Nakayama rule is derived for the Hecke-Clifford algebra $\mathcal{H}^c_n$ based on the Frobenius formula and vertex operators, and this leads to a combinatorial version via the tableaux realization of Schur's $Q$-functions. As a consequence, a general formula for the irreducible characters $ζ^{\la}_μ(q)$ using partition-valued functions is derived. Meanwhile, an iterative formula on the indexing partition $\la$ via the Pieri rule is also deduced. As applications, some compact formulae of the irreducible characters are given for special partitions and a symmetric property of the irreducible character is found. We also introduce the spin bitrace as the analogue of the bitrace for the Hecke algebra and derive its general combinatorial formula. Tables of irreducible characters are listed for $n\leq7.$

Spin Kostka polynomials and vertex operators
Published in Pacific J. Math. 325 (2023) 127-146 • View PublicationBIB
An algebraic iterative formula for the spin Kostka-Foulkes polynomial $K^-_{ξμ}(t)$ is given using vertex operator realizations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions and Schur's Q-functions. Based on the operational formula, more favorable properties are obtained parallel to the Kostka polynomial. In particular, we obtain some formulae for the number of (unshifted) marked tableaux. As an application, we confirmed a conjecture of Aokage on the expansion of the Schur $P$-function in terms of Schur functions. Tables of $K^-_{ξμ}(t)$ for $|ξ|\leq6$ are listed.

On the full Kostant-Toda hierarchy and its $\ell$-banded reductions for the Lie algebras of type $A, B$ and $G$
This paper concerns the solutions of the full Kostant-Toda (f-KT) hierarchy in the Hessenberg form and their reductions to the $\ell$-banded Kostant-Toda ($\ell$-KT) hierarchy. We also study the f-KT hierarchy and the corresponding $\ell$-KT hierarchy on simple Lie algebras of type $A, B$ and $G$ based on root space reductions with proper Chevalley systems. Explicit formulas of the polynomial solutions for the $τ$-functions are also given in terms of the Schur functions and Schur's $Q$-functions.
Frames for signal processing on Cayley graphs
The spectral decomposition of graph adjacency matrices is an essential ingredient in the design of graph signal processing (GSP) techniques. When the adjacency matrix has multi-dimensional eigenspaces, it is desirable to base GSP constructions on a particular eigenbasis that better reflects the graph's symmetries. In this paper, we provide an explicit and detailed representation-theoretic account for the spectral decomposition of the adjacency matrix of a weighted Cayley graph. Our method applies to all weighted Cayley graphs, regardless of whether they are quasi-Abelian, and offers detailed descriptions of eigenvalues and eigenvectors derived from the coefficient functions of the representations of the underlying group. Next, we turn our attention to constructing frames on Cayley graphs. Frames are overcomplete spanning sets that ensure stable and potentially redundant systems for signal reconstruction. We use our proposed eigenbases to build frames that are suitable for developing signal processing on Cayley graphs. These are the Frobenius--Schur frames and Cayley frames, for which we provide a characterization and a practical recipe for their construction.

Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups
There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

Ribbon Schur Functors
Published in Alg. Number Th. 19 (2025) 771-834 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a generalization of the classical notion of a Schur functor associated to a ribbon diagram. These functors are defined with respect to an arbitrary algebra, and in the case that the underlying algebra is the symmetric/exterior algebra, we recover the classical definition of Schur/Weyl functors, respectively. In general, we construct a family of 3-term complexes categorifying the classical concatenation/near-concatenation identity for symmetric functions, and one of our main results is that the exactness of these 3-term complexes is equivalent to the Koszul property of the underlying algebra $A$. We further generalize these ribbon Schur functors to the notion of a multi-Schur functor and construct a canonical filtration of these objects whose associated graded pieces are described explicitly; one consequence of this filtration is a complete equivariant description of the syzygies of arbitrary Segre products of Koszul modules over the Segre product of Koszul algebras. Further applications to the equivariant structure of derived invariants, symmetric function identities, and Koszulness of certain classes of modules are explored at the end, along with a characteristic-free computation of the regularity of a Schur functor applied to the tautological subbundle on projective space.

Switch Operators for the Six-Vertex Model
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new switch operator for the six-vertex model. This operator, derived from the Yang-Baxter equation, allows us to express the partition function with arbitrary boundaries in terms of a base case with domain wall boundary conditions. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for the factorial Schur functions and their generalizations. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between boundary conditions and partition functions in the six-vertex model.

Quasicrystal Structure of Fundamental Quasisymmetric Functions, and Skeleton of Crystals
We use crystals of tableaux and descent compositions to understand the decomposition of Schur functions $s_λ$ into Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions $F_α$. The connected crystal of tableaux $B(λ)$, associated to $s_λ$, is shown to be partitionned into a disjoint union of connected induced subgraphs $B(T_α)$ corresponding to the $F_α$'s. We show that these subgraphs, which we call quasicrystals, are isomorphic (as graphs) to specific crystals of tableaux. This allows us to give a formula for the number of tableaux of shape $λ$ and maximal entry $n$. We also use this setting to give a constructive proof of a combinatorial formula for Kostka numbers $K^λ_μ$. We study the position of the quasicrystals within the crystal $B(λ)$, and show that they appear in dually positionned pairs, with the crystal anti-automorphism between them being given by a generalization of Schützenberger's evacuation. We introduce the notion of skeleton of the crystal $B(λ)$ given by replacing each subgraph $B(T_α)$ by the associated standard tableau of shape $λ$. We conjecture that its graph includes the dual equivalence graph for $λ$, introduced by Assaf, and that its subgraphs of tableaux with fixed number of descents have particular structures. Finally, we describe applications to plethysm, among which we give an algorithm to express any symmetric sum of fundamental quasisymmetric functions into the Schur basis, whose construction gives insight into the relationship between the two basis.

Moving vectors I: Representation type of blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras
We introduce a new invariant for blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras, called block moving vector, which is a vector of non-negative integers summing up to the weight of the block. In this paper, we use moving vectors to classify representation-finite blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras. As applications, we obtain examples of blocks with the same weight associated with the same multicharge that are not derived equivalent and examples of derived equivalent blocks being in different orbits under the adjoint action of the affine Weyl group. We also determine the representation type for blocks of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras.

Averaging method in combinatorics of symmetric polynomials
Published in Phys.Lett. B843 (2023) 138037 • View PublicationBIB
We elaborate on the recent suggestion to consider averaging of Cauchy identities for the Schur functions over power sum variables. This procedure has apparent parallels with the Borel transform, only it changes the number of combinatorial factors like $d_R$ in the sums over Young diagrams instead of just factorials in ordinary sums over numbers. It provides a universal view on a number of previously known, but seemingly random identities.

Hurwitz numbers for reflection groups $B$ and $D$
We are building a theory of simple Hurwitz numbers for the reflection groups B and D parallel to the classical theory for the symmetric group. We also study analogs of the cut-and-join operators. An algebraic description of Hurwitz numbers and an explicit formula for them in terms of Schur polynomials are provided. We also relate Hurwitz numbers for B and D to ribbon decomposition of surfaces with boundary -- a similar result for the symmetric group was proved earlier by Yu.Burman and the author. Finally, the generating function of B-Hurwitz numbers is shown to give rise to two independent tau-function of the KP hierarchy.

Cospectral graphs obtained by edge deletion
Let $M\circ N$ denote the Schur product of two matrices $M$ and $N$. A graph $X$ with adjacency matrix $A$ is walk regular if $A^k\circ I$ is a constant times $I$ for each $k\ge0$, and $X$ is 1-walk-regular if it is walk regular and $A^k\circ A$ is a constant times $A$ for each $k\ge0$. Assume $X$ is 1-walk regular. Here we show that by deleting an edge in $X$, or deleting edges of a graph inside a clique of $X$, we obtain families of graphs that are not necessarily isomorphic, but are cospectral with respect to four types of matrices: the adjacency matrix, Laplacian matrix, unsigned Laplacian matrix, and normalized Laplacian matrix. Furthermore, we show that removing edges of Laplacian cospectral graphs in cliques of a 1-walk regular graph results in Laplacian cospectral graphs; removing edges of unsigned Laplacian cospectral graphs whose complements are also cospectral with respect to the unsigned Laplacian in cliques of a 1-walk regular graph results in unsigned Laplacian cospectral graphs.

Key and Lascoux polynomials for symmetric orbit closures
We introduce shifted analogues of key polynomials related to symplectic and orthogonal orbit closures in the complete flag variety. Our definitions are given by applying isobaric divided difference operators to the analogues of Schubert polynomials for orbit closures that correspond to dominant involutions. We show that our shifted key polynomials are linear combinations of key polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We also prove that they are partial versions of the classical Schur $P$- and $Q$-polynomials. Finally, we examine $K$-theoretic generalizations of these functions, which give shifted forms of Lascoux polynomials. In the symplectic case, these generalizations are partial versions of the $GP$-polynomials introduced by Ikeda and Naruse. Besides developing basic properties, we identify a number of conjectures and open problems.
Sum formulas for Schur multiple zeta values
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study sum formulas for Schur multiple zeta values and give a generalization of the sum formulas for multiple zeta(-star) values. We show that for ribbons of certain types, the sum over all admissible Young tableaux of this shape evaluates to a rational multiple of the Riemann zeta value. For arbitrary ribbons with $n$ corners, we show that these can be always expressed in terms of multiple zeta values of depth $\leq n$. In particular, when $n=2$, we give explicit, what we call, bounded type sum formulas for these ribbons. Finally, we show how to evaluate the sum over all admissible Young tableaux with exactly one corner and also prove bounded type sum formulas for them. This will also lead to relations among sums of Schur multiple zeta values over all admissible Young tableaux of different shapes.
