We study pfaffian analogues of immanants, which we call pfaffinants. Our main object is the TL-pfaffinants which are analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's TL-immanants. We show that TL-pfaffinants are positive when applied to planar networks and explain how to decompose products of complementary pfaffians in terms of TL-pfaffinants. We conjecture in addition that TL-pfaffinants have positivity properties related to Schur Q-functions.
Sensor Network Localization, Euclidean Distance Matrix Completions, and Graph Realization

We study Semidefinite Programming, \SDPc relaxations for Sensor Network Localization, \SNLc with anchors and with noisy distance information. The main point of the paper is to view \SNL as a (nearest) Euclidean Distance Matrix, \EDM, completion problem and to show the advantages for using this latter, well studied model. We first show that the current popular \SDP relaxation is equivalent to known relaxations in the literature for \EDM completions. The existence of anchors in the problem is {\em not} special. The set of anchors simply corresponds to a given fixed clique for the graph of the \EDM problem. We next propose a method of projection when a large clique or a dense subgraph is identified in the underlying graph. This projection reduces the size, and improves the stability, of the relaxation. In addition, viewing the problem as an \EDM completion problem yields better low rank approximations for the low dimensional realizations. And, the projection/reduction procedure can be repeated for other given cliques of sensors or for sets of sensors, where many distances are known. Thus, further size reduction can be obtained. Optimality/duality conditions and a primal-dual interior-exterior path following algorithm are derived for the \SDP relaxations We discuss the relative stability and strength of two formulations and the corresponding algorithms that are used. In particular, we show that the quadratic formulation arising from the \SDP relaxation is better conditioned than the linearized form, that is used in the literature and that arises from applying a Schur complement.

R. Stanley has found a nice combinatorial formula for characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group of rectangular shape. Then, he has given a conjectural generalisation for any shape. Here, we will prove this formula using shifted Schur functions and Jucys-Murphy elements.

We give a new proof of Milne's formulas for the number of representations of an integer as a sum of 4m^2 and 4m(m+1) squares. The proof is based on explicit evaluation of pfaffians with elliptic function entries, and relates Milne's formulas to Schur Q-polynomials and to correlation functions for continuous dual Hahn polynomials. We also state a new formula for 2m^2 squares.

Let V(n) be the minimum number of monochromatic 3-term arithmetic progressions in any 2-coloring of {1,2,...,n}. We show that (1675/32768) n^2 (1+o(1)) <= V(n) <= (117/2192) n^2(1+o(1)). As a consequence, we find that V(n) is strictly greater than the corresponding number for Schur triples (which is (1/22) n^2 (1+o(1)). Additionally, we disprove the conjecture that V(n) = (1/16) n^2(1+o(1)), as well as a more general conjecture.

Young's lattice is a prototypical example of differential posets. Differential posets have the Robinson correspondence, the correspondence between permutations and pairs of standard tableaux with the same shape, as in the case of Young's lattice. Fomin introduced generalized Schur operators to generalize the method of Robinson correspondence in differential posets to the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, the correspondence between certain matrices and pairs of semi-standard tableaux with the same shape. In this paper, we introduce operators on the vector space whose basis is the set of planar binary trees. To prove that the operators are generalized Schur operators, we construct a correspondence, which is an extension of Fomin's r-correspondence for them.
P-partition products and fundamental quasi-symmetric function positivity

We show that certain differences of products of $P$-partition generating functions are positive in the basis of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions L_α. This result interpolates between recent Schur positivity and monomial positivity results of the same flavor. We study the case of chains in detail, introducing certain ``cell transfer'' operations on compositions and an interesting related ``L-positivity'' poset. We introduce and study quasi-symmetric functions called ``wave Schur functions'' and use them to establish, in the case of chains, that the difference of products we study is itself equal to a single generating function K_{P,θ} for a labeled poset (P,θ). In the course of our investigations we establish some factorization properties of the ring of quasisymmetric functions.

We present a single operation for constructing skew diagrams whose corresponding skew Schur functions are equal. This combinatorial operation naturally generalises and unifies all results of this type to date. Moreover, our operation suggests a closely related condition that we conjecture is necessary and sufficient for skew diagrams to yield equal skew Schur functions.

We give a description of faces of all codimensions for the cones of weights of rings of semi-invariants of quivers. For a triple flag quiver and faces of codimension 1 this reduces to the result of Knutson-Tao-Woodward on the facets of the Klyachko cone. We give new applications to Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, including a product formula for LR-coefficients corresponding to triples of partitions lying on a wall of the Klyachko cone. We systematically review and develop the necessary methods (exceptional and Schur sequences, orthogonal categories, semi-stable decompositions, GIT quotients for quivers). In the Appendix we include a version of Belkale's geometric proof of Fulton's conjecture that works for arbitrary quivers.

This paper classifies the blocks of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type G(r,1,n) over an arbitrary field. Rather than working with the Hecke algebras directly we work instead with the cyclotomic Schur algebras. The advantage of these algebras is that the cyclotomic Jantzen sum formula gives an easy combinatorial characterization of the blocks of the cyclotomic Schur algebras. We obtain an explicit description of the blocks by analyzing the combinatorics of `Jantzen equivalence'.
We remark that a proof of the classification of the blocks of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras was announced in 1999. Unfortunately, Cox has discovered that this previous proof is incomplete.
Generalized cluster complexes via quiver representations

We give a quiver representation theoretic interpretation of generalized cluster complexes defined by Fomin and Reading.
By using $d-$cluster categories which are defined by Keller as triangulated orbit categories of (bounded) derived categories of representations of valued quivers, we define a $d-$compatibility degree $(-||-)$ on any pair of ``colored'' almost positive real Schur roots which generalizes previous definitions on the non-colored case, and call two such roots compatible provided the $d-$compatibility degree of them is zero. Associated to the root system $Φ$ corresponding to the valued quiver, by using this compatibility relation, we define a simplicial complex which has colored almost positive real Schur roots as vertices and $d-$compatible subsets as simplicies. If the valued quiver is an alternating quiver of a Dynkin diagram, then this complex is the generalized cluster complex defined by Fomin and Reading.

Young's lattice, the lattice of all Young diagrams, has the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, the correspondence between certain matrices and pairs of semi-standard Young tableaux with the same shape. Fomin introduced generalized Schur operators to generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. In this sense, generalized Schur operators are generalizations of semi-standard Young tableaux. We define a generalization of Schur polynomials as expansion coefficients of generalized Schur operators. We show that the commutating relation of generalized Schur operators implies Pieri's formula to generalized Schur polynomials.
Multivariable Christoffel-Darboux Kernels and Characteristic Polynomials of Random Hermitian Matrices

We study multivariable Christoffel-Darboux kernels, which may be viewed as reproducing kernels for antisymmetric orthogonal polynomials, and also as correlation functions for products of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. Using their interpretation as reproducing kernels, we obtain simple proofs of Pfaffian and determinant formulas, as well as Schur polynomial expansions, for such kernels. In subsequent work, these results are applied in combinatorics (enumeration of marked shifted tableaux) and number theory (representation of integers as sums of squares).
Quadratic transformations of Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials

When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.

A result of Foata and Schutzenberger states that two statistics on permutations, the number of inversions and the inverse major index, have the same distribution on a descent class. We give a multivariate generalization of this property: the sorted vectors of the Lehmer code, of the inverse majcode, and of a new code (the inverse saillance code), have the same distribution on a descent class, and their common multivariate generating function is a flagged ribbon Schur function.
Filtering bases and cohomology of nilpotent subalgebras of Witt and $\widetilde{sl}_2$ Lie algebras

We study the cohomology with trivial coefficients of Lie algebras L_k of the polynomial vector fields on the line with zero $k$-jet, (k>=1), and the cohomology of the similar subalgebras {L}_k of the polynomial loops algebra $\widetilde{sl}_2$. In both cases we construct the special bases (filtering bases) in the external complexes of these algebras. A spectral sequence based on this construction allows to completely find the cohomology of L_k and {L}_k. We also apply the filtering bases to find the spectral resolution of the Laplace operators for algebras L_1 and L_0, and obtain explicit formulas for the representing cycles of homologies for algebras L_k and {L}_k by means of the Schur polynomials.
Crystal bases and combinatorics of infinite rank quantum groups

The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic algebra and plactic Schur functions distinct for each infinite root system. Surprisingly, the algebras spanned by these plactic Schur functions are all isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions.

Linear recursions of degree $k$ are determined by evaluating the sequence of Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials, $\{F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k)\}$ (isobaric reflects of the complete symmetric polynomials) at the integer vectors $(t_1,...,t_k)$. If $F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k) = f_n$, then $$f_n - \sum_{j=1}^k t_j f_{n-j} = 0,$$ and $\{f_n\}$ is a linear recursion of degree $k$.
On the one hand, the periodic properties of such sequences modulo a prime $p$ are discussed, and are shown to be related to the prime structure of certain algebraic number fields; for example, the arithmetic properties of the period are shown to characterize ramification of primes in an extension field. On the other hand, the structure of the semilocal rings associated with the number field is shown to be completely determined by Schur-hook polynomials.

A Decomposition of Schur functions and an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm

We exhibit a weight-preserving bijection between semi-standard Young tableaux and semi-skyline augmented fillings to provide a combinatorial proof that the Schur functions decompose into nonsymmetric functions indexed by compositions. The insertion procedure involved in the proof leads to an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm for semi-skyline augmented fillings. This procedure commutes with the RSK algorithm, and therefore retains many of its properties.
