A combinatorial interpretation of the Bernstein degree of unitary highest weight modules
Consider the $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules $L_λ$ for unitary highest weight representations of the real reductive group $G_{\mathbb{R}} = \operatorname{U}(p,q)$, $\operatorname{Mp}(2n, \mathbb{R})$, or $\operatorname{O}^*(2n)$, where $\operatorname{Mp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ denotes the metaplectic double cover of $\operatorname{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$. Let $k$ be a positive integer. Corresponding to $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ via Howe duality is the compact group $\operatorname{U}(k)$, $\operatorname{O}(k)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(k)$, respectively, for which every irreducible representation $σ$ corresponds to a unique $L_λ = L_{λ(σ)}$. Nishiyama-Ochiai-Taniguchi (2001) expressed the Bernstein degree $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)}$ as the product of $\dim σ$ and the degree of the associated variety of $L_{λ(σ)}$; this result is valid when $k \leq r :=$ the real rank of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. In this paper, for arbitrary $k$, we give a new combinatorial interpretation $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)} = \#(\mathcal{Q}_k(σ) \times \mathcal{P}_k)$, where $\mathcal{Q}_k(σ)$ is a certain set of semistandard tableaux, whose cardinality (for $k \geq r$) interpolates between $\dim σ$ and the dimension of the simple $K$-module with highest weight $λ(σ)$. The set $\mathcal{P}_k$ consists of certain plane partitions that encode the Hilbert series of the associated variety. We exhibit analogous sets $\mathcal{P}_k$ of plane partitions for all real reductive groups of Hermitian type, including the exceptional groups.

Alcove walk models for parabolic Mirković-Vilonen intersections and branching to Levi subgroups
This article establishes alcove walk models for intersections of Schubert varieties and partially semi-infinite orbits in the affine Grassmannian of a split reductive group (we call such intersections parabolic Mirković-Vilonen intersections). More precisely, we describe explicit cellular pavings of these intersections, indexed by certain positively-folded alcove walks. We prove a parametrization of the irreducible components of maximal possible dimension, in terms of alcove walks of maximal possible dimension. We then deduce a new combinatorial description of branching to Levi subgroups of irreducible highest weight representations, and in particular we give a new algorithm for computing the characters of such representations.

Degrees of P-Grothendieck polynomials and regularity of Pfaffian varieties
We prove a formula for the degrees of Ikeda and Naruse's $P$-Grothendieck polynomials using combinatorics of shifted tableaux. We show this formula can be used in conjunction with results of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski to obtain an upper bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain Pfaffian varieties known as vexillary skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties. Similar combinatorics additionally yields a new formula for the degree of Grassmannian Grothendieck polynomials and the regularity of Grassmannian matrix Schubert varieties, complementing a 2021 formula of Rajchgot, Ren, Robichaux, St. Dizier, and Weigandt.

Splicing positroid varieties
We construct an explicit isomorphism between an open subset in the open positroid variety $Π_{k,n}^{\circ}$ in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k,n)$ and the product of two open positroid varieties $Π_{k,n-a+1}^{\circ}\times Π_{k,a+k-1}^{\circ}$. In the respective cluster structures, this isomorphism is given by freezing a certain subset of cluster variables and applying a cluster quasi-equivalence.

Putatively optimal projective spherical designs with little apparent symmetry
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Designs (2025) • View PublicationBIB
We give some new explicit examples of putatively optimal projective spherical designs. i.e., ones for which there is numerical evidence that they are of minimal size. These form continuous families, and so have little apparent symmetry in general, which requires the introduction of new techniques for their construction. New examples of interest include an 11-point spherical (3, 3)-design for R 3 , and a 12-point spherical (2, 2)-design for R 4 given by four Mercedes-Benz frames that lie on equi-isoclinic planes. We also give results of an extensive numerical study to determine the nature of the real algebraic variety of optimal projective real spherical designs, and in particular when it is a single point (a unique design) or corresponds to an infinite family of designs.

Orbit structures and complexity in Schubert and Richardson Varieties
The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we provide a type-uniform formula for the torus complexity of the usual torus action on a Richardson variety, by developing the notion of algebraic dimensions of Bruhat intervals, strengthening a type $A$ result by Donten-Bury, Escobar and Portakal. In the process, we give an explicit description of the torus action on any Deodhar component as well as describe the root subgroups that comprise the component. Secondly, when a Levi subgroup in a reductive algebraic group acts on a Schubert variety, we exhibit a codimension preserving bijection between the Levi-Borel subgroup (a Borel subgroup in the Levi subgroup) orbits in the big open cell of that Schubert variety and torus orbits in the big open cell of a distinguished Schubert subvariety. This bijection has many applications including a type-uniform formula for the Levi-Borel complexity of the usual Levi-Borel subgroup action on a Schubert variety. We conclude by extending the Levi-Borel complexity results to a large class of Schubert varieties in the partial flag variety.

The Square-Root Law Does Not Hold in the Presence of Zero Divisors
Let $R$ be a finite ring (with unit, not necessarily commutative) and define the paraboloid $P = \{(x_1, \dots, x_d)\in R^d|x_d = x_1^2 + \dots + x_{d-1}^2\}.$ Suppose that for a sequence of finite rings of size tending to infinity, the Fourier transform of $P$ satisfies a square-root law of the form $|\hat{P}(χ)|\leq C|R|^{-d}|P|^\frac{1}{2}$ for some fixed constant $C$ (for instance, if $R$ is a finite field, this bound will be satisfied with $C = 1$). Then all but finitely many of the rings are fields. Most of our argument works in greater generality: let $f$ be a polynomial with integer coefficients in $d-1$ variables, with a fixed order of variable multiplications (so that it defines a function $R^{d-1}\rightarrow R$ even when $R$ is noncommutative), and set $V_f = \{(x_1, \dots, x_d)\in R^d|x_d = f(x_1, \dots, x_{d-1})\}$. If (for a sequence of finite rings of size tending to infinity) we have a square root law for the Fourier transform of $V_f$, then all but finitely many of the rings are fields or matrix rings of small dimension. We also describe how our techniques let us see that certain varieties do not satisfy a square root law even over finite fields.
Low-Degree Polynomials Are Good Extractors
We prove that random low-degree polynomials (over $\mathbb{F}_2$) are unbiased, in an extremely general sense. That is, we show that random low-degree polynomials are good randomness extractors for a wide class of distributions. Prior to our work, such results were only known for the small families of (1) uniform sources, (2) affine sources, and (3) local sources. We significantly generalize these results, and prove the following. 1. Low-degree polynomials extract from small families. We show that a random low-degree polynomial is a good low-error extractor for any small family of sources. In particular, we improve the positive result of Alrabiah, Chattopadhyay, Goodman, Li, and Ribeiro (ICALP 2022) for local sources, and give new results for polynomial and variety sources via a single unified approach. 2. Low-degree polynomials extract from sumset sources. We show that a random low-degree polynomial is a good extractor for sumset sources, which are the most general large family of sources (capturing independent sources, interleaved sources, small-space sources, and more). Formally, for any even $d$, we show that a random degree $d$ polynomial is an $\varepsilon$-error extractor for $n$-bit sumset sources with min-entropy $k=O(d(n/\varepsilon^2)^{2/d})$. This is nearly tight in the polynomial error regime. Our results on sumset extractors imply new complexity separations for linear ROBPs, and the tools that go into its proof may be of independent interest. The two main tools we use are a new structural result on sumset-punctured Reed-Muller codes, paired with a novel type of reduction between extractors. Using the new structural result, we obtain new limits on the power of sumset extractors, strengthening and generalizing the impossibility results of Chattopadhyay, Goodman, and Gurumukhani (ITCS 2024).
Gamma vectors of partitioned permutohedra
We determine that $γ$-vectors of partitioned permutohedra, thereby generalizing a result of Foata and Schützenberger. Our result is closely related to a result of Athanasiadis on the representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the permutohedral variety. We explain how to derive Athanasiadis' result from ours and vice versa.

Evolution of locally dependent random graphs
In this paper we study $d$-dependent random graphs -- introduced by Brody and Sanchez -- which are the family of random graph distributions where each edge is present with probability $p$, and each edge is independent of all but at most $d$ other edges. For this random graph model, we analyze degree sequences, jumbledness, connectivity, and subgraph containment. Our results mirror those of the classical Erdős--Rényi random graph, which are recovered by specializing our problem to $d=0$, although we show that in many regards our setting is appreciably more nuanced. We survey what is known for this model and conclude with a variety of open questions.

Regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties
Let $G$ be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group. Fix a subset $Θ$ of simple roots. Given a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots, one can define the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ in the full flag variety $G/B$. For a $Θ$-ideal $I$ (which is a special lower ideal), we can define the regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in the partial flag variety $G/P$. In this manuscript we first provide a summand formula and a product formula for the Poincaré polynomial of regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. It is a well-known result from Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand that the cohomology ring of the partial flag variety $G/P$ is isomorphic to the invariants in the cohomology ring of the full flag variety $G/B$ under an action of the parabolic Weyl group $W_Θ$ generated by $Θ$. We generalize this result to regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. More concretely, we give an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ and the $W_Θ$-invariant subring of the cohomology ring of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$. Furthermore, we provide a description of the cohomology ring for a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in terms of the $W_Θ$-invariants in the logarithmic derivation module of the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, which is a generalization of the result by Abe-Masuda-Murai-Sato with the author.

Variety of mutual-visibility problems in hypercubes
Let $G$ be a graph and $M \subseteq V(G)$. Vertices $x, y \in M$ are $M$-visible if there exists a shortest $x,y$-path of $G$ that does not pass through any vertex of $M \setminus \{x, y \}$. We say that $M$ is a mutual-visibility set if each pair of vertices of $M$ is $M$-visible, while the size of any largest mutual-visibility set of $G$ is the mutual-visibility number of $G$. If some additional combinations for pairs of vertices $x, y$ are required to be $M$-visible, we obtain the total (every $x,y \in V(G)$ are $M$-visible), the outer (every $x \in M$ and every $y \in V(G) \setminus M$ are $M$-visible), and the dual (every $x,y \in V(G) \setminus M$ are $M$-visible) mutual-visibility set of $G$. The cardinalities of the largest of the above defined sets are known as the total, the outer, and the dual mutual-visibility number of $G$, respectively. We present results on the variety of mutual-visibility problems in hypercubes.

Homological smoothness and Deligne resolution for tropical fans
We say that a tropical fan is homologically smooth if each of its open subsets verify tropical Poincare duality. A tropical homology manifold is a tropical variety that is locally modelled by open subsets of homologically smooth tropical fans. We show that homological smoothness is a T-stable property in the category of tropical fans. This implies in particular that quasilinear fans are homologically smooth, and tropical varieties locally modelled by them are tropical homology manifolds. Previously, this was known only for locally matroidal tropical varieties. In order to show the above results, we prove a tropical analogue of the Deligne weight spectral sequence for homologically smooth tropical fans. This allows to describe the cohomology of tropical modifications, and will be of importance in our companion work which develops a Hodge theory in the tropical setting.

The spectral genus of an isolated hypersurface singularity and a conjecture relating to the Milnor number
In this paper, we introduce the notion of spectral genus $\widetilde{p}_{g}$ of a germ of an isolated hypersurface singularity $(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}, 0) \to (\mathbb{C}, 0)$, defined as a sum of small exponents of monodromy eigenvalues. The number of these is equal to the geometric genus $p_{g}$, and hence $\widetilde{p}_g$ can be considered as a secondary invariant to it. We then explore a secondary version of the Durfee conjecture on $p_{g}$, and we predict an inequality between $\widetilde{p}_{g}$ and the Milnor number $μ$, to the effect that $$\widetilde{p}_g\leq\frac{μ-1}{(n+2)!}.$$ We provide evidence by confirming our conjecture in several cases, including homogeneous singularities and singularities with large Newton polyhedra, and quasi-homogeneous or irreducible curve singularities. We also show that a weaker inequality follows from Durfee's conjecture, and hence holds for quasi-homogeneous singularities and curve singularities. Our conjecture is shown to relate closely to the asymptotic behavior of the holomorphic analytic torsion of the sheaf of holomorphic functions on a degeneration of projective varieties, potentially indicating deeper geometric and analytic connections.

Tropical Vector Bundles
The goal of this paper is to introduce a construction of a vector bundle on a tropical variety. When the base is a tropical toric variety these tropicalize toric vector bundles, and are described by the data of a valuated matroid and some flats in the lattice of flats of the underlying matroid. The fibers are tropical linear spaces. We define global sections for tropical toric vector bundles, stability, and Jordan-Hölder and Harder-Narasimhan filtrations. Many of these require additional modularity assumptions on the defining matroid.

Tropical vector bundles and matroids
We introduce a notion of tropical vector bundle on a tropical toric variety which is a tropical analogue of a torus equivariant vector bundle on a toric variety. Alternatively it can be called a toric matroid bundle. We define equivariant $K$-theory and characteristic classes of these bundles. As a particular case, we show that any matroid comes with tautological tropical toric vector bundles over the permutahedral toric variety and the corresponding equivariant $K$-classes and Chern classes recover the tautological classes of matroids constructed in the recent work of Berger-Eur-Spink-Tseng. In analogy with toric vector bundles, we define sheaf of sections and Euler characteristic as well as positivity notions such as global generation, ampleness and nefness for tropical toric vector bundles. Moreover, we prove a vanishing of higher cohomologies result. Finally, we study the splitting of our tropical toric vector bundles and, in particular, an analogue of Grothendieck's theorem on splitting of vector bundles on projective line.

Degeneration in discriminantal arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Discriminantal arrangements are hyperplane arrangements, which are generalized braid ones. They are constructed from given hyperplane arrangements, but their combinatorics are not invariant under combinatorial equivalence. However, it is known that the combinatorics of the discriminantal arrangement are constant on a Zariski open set of the space of hyperplane arrangements. In the present paper, we introduce non-very generic varieties in the space of hyperplane arrangements to classify discriminantal arrangements and show that the Zariski open set is the complement of non-very generic varieties. We study their basic properties and construction and provide examples, including infinite families of non-very generic varieties. In particular, the construction we call degeneration is a powerful tool for constructing non-very generic varieties. As an application, we provide lists of non-very generic varieties for spaces of small line arrangements.

Around the positive graph conjecture
A graph $H$ is said to be positive if the homomorphism density $t_H(G)$ is non-negative for all weighted graphs $G$. The positive graph conjecture proposes a characterisation of such graphs, saying that a graph is positive if and only if it is symmetric, in the sense that it is formed by gluing two copies of some subgraph along an independent set. We prove several results relating to this conjecture. First, we make progress towards the conjecture itself by showing that any connected positive graph must have a vertex of even degree. We then make use of this result to identify some new counterexamples to the analogue of Sidorenko's conjecture for hypergraphs. In particular, we show that, for $r$ odd, every $r$-uniform tight cycle is a counterexample, generalising a recent result of Conlon, Lee and Sidorenko that dealt with the case $r=3$. Finally, we relate the positive graph conjecture to the emerging study of graph codes by showing that any positive graph has vanishing graph code density, thereby improving a result of Alon who proved the same result for symmetric graphs. Our proofs make use of a variety of tools and techniques, including the properties of independence polynomials, hypergraph quasirandomness and discrete Fourier analysis.

Link patterns and elliptic Hecke algebra
We compare the following three families of geometric objects: Schubert varieties in flag manifolds, matrix Schubert varieties, and Borel orbits of 2-nilpotent matrices. The first family is governed by permutations, the second by partial permutations, and the last one by "link patterns". These geometric objects admit characteristic classes in equivariant elliptic cohomology obtained within the framework created by Borisov and Libgober. We construct a Hecke-type algebra for computing elliptic classes and extend its action to include partial permutations and linking patterns. A uniform point of view facilitates a better understanding of duality.

The Tropical Variety of Symmetric Rank 2 Matrices
We study the tropicalization of the variety of symmetric rank two matrices. Analogously to the result of Markwig and Yu for general tropical rank two matrices, we show that it has a simplicial complex structure as the space of symmetric bicolored trees and that this simplicial complex is shellable. We also discuss some matroid structures arising from this space and present generating functions for the number of symmetric bicolored trees.
