There are $(r+1)(r+2)(2r+3)(r^2+3r+5)$ Ways For the Four Teams of a World Cup Group to Each Have $r$ Goals For and $r$ Goals Against [Thanks to the Soccer Analog of Prop. 4.6.19 of Richard Stanley's (Classic!) EC1]
This short tribute to the guru of Enumerative and Algebraic Combinatorics started out when one the authors(DZ) attended the Stanely@70 conference, that took place at the same time as the preliminary stage of the 2014 World Cup. It states a surprising application of an analog of Richard Stanley's famous theorem about the enumeration of magic squares to the enumeration of possible outcomes in a World Cup Group.
Group With Maximum Undirected Edges in Directed Power Graph Among All Finite Non-Cyclic Nilpotent Groups
In [Curtin and Pourgholi, A group sum inequality and its application to power graphs, J. Algebraic Combinatorics, 2014], it is proved that among all directed power graphs of groups of a given order $ n $, the directed power graph of cyclic group of order $ n $ has the maximum number of undirected edges. In this paper, we continue their work and we determine a non-cyclic nilpotent group of an odd order $ n $ whose directed power graph has the maximum number of undirected edges among all non-cyclic nilpotent groups of order $n$.
We next determine non-cyclic $p$-groups whose undirected power graphs have the maximum number of edges among all groups of the same order.
Some remarkable new Plethystic Operators in the Theory of Macdonald Polynomials

In the 90's a collection of Plethystic operators were introduced in [3], [7] and [8] to solve some Representation Theoretical problems arising from the Theory of Macdonald polynomials. This collection was enriched in the research that led to the results which appeared in [5], [6] and [9]. However since some of the identities resulting from these efforts were eventually not needed, this additional work remained unpublished. As a consequence of very recent publications [4], [11], [19], [20], [21], a truly remarkable expansion of this theory has taken place. However most of this work has appeared in a language that is virtually inaccessible to practitioners of Algebraic Combinatorics. Yet, these developments have led to a variety of new conjectures in [2] in the Combinatorics and Symmetric function Theory of Macdonald Polynomials. The present work results from an effort to obtain in an elementary and accessible manner all the background necessary to construct the symmetric function side of some of these new conjectures. It turns out that the above mentioned unpublished results provide precisely the tools needed to carry out this project to its completion.

The goal of the paper is to describe new connections between representation theory and algebraic combinatorics on one side, and probability theory on the other side.
The central result is a construction, by essentially algebraic tools, of a family of Markov processes. The common state space of these processes is an infinite dimensional (but locally compact) space Omega. It arises in representation theory as the space of indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity).
Alternatively, Omega can be defined in combinatorial terms as the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph --- an infinite graded graph that encodes the classical branching rule for characters of the compact unitary groups U(N).
We also discuss two other topics concerning the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph:
(1) Computation of the number of trapezoidal Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes (one could also say, the number of integral points in a truncated Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope). The formula we obtain is well suited for asymptotic analysis.
(2) A degeneration procedure relating the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph to the Young graph by means of a new combinatorial object, the Young bouquet.
At the end we discuss a few related works and further developments.

We present a beautiful interplay between combinatorial topology and homological algebra for a class of monoids that arise naturally in algebraic combinatorics. We explore several applications of this interplay. For instance, we provide a new interpretation of the Leray number of a clique complex in terms of non-commutative algebra.

Association schemes form one of the main objects of algebraic combinatorics, classically defined on finite sets. In this paper we define association schemes on arbitrary, possibly uncountable sets with a measure. We study operator realizations of the adjacency algebras of schemes and derive simple properties of these algebras. To develop a theory of general association schemes, we focus on schemes on topological Abelian groups where we can employ duality theory and the machinery of harmonic analysis. We construct translation association schemes on such groups using the language of spectrally dual partitions. Such partitions are shown to arise naturally on topological zero-dimensional Abelian groups, for instance, Cantor-type groups or the groups of p-adic numbers. This enables us to construct large classes of dual pairs of association schemes on zero-dimensional groups with respect to their Haar measure, and to compute their eigenvalues and intersection numbers. We also derive properties of infinite metric schemes, connecting them with the properties of the non-Archimedean metric on the group.
Pursuing the connection between schemes on zero-dimensional groups and harmonic analysis, we show that the eigenvalues have a natural interpretation in terms of Littlewood-Paley wavelet bases, and in the (equivalent) language of martingale theory. For a class of nonmetric schemes constructed in the paper, the eigenvalues coincide with values of orthogonal functions on zero-dimensional groups. We observe that these functions, which we call Haar-like bases, have the properties of wavelets on the group, including in some special cases the self-similarity property. This establishes a seemingly new link between algebraic combinatorics and harmonic analysis.
We conclude the paper by studying some analogs of problems of classical coding theory related to the theory of association schemes.
Combinatoire algébrique liée aux ordres sur les permutations
This thesis comes within the scope of algebraic combinatorics and studies problems related to three orders on permutations: the two said weak orders (right and left) and the strong order or Bruhat order. The first part deals with bases of multivariate polynomials. Most specifically, we study a product of Grothendieck polynomials and prove that it can interpreted as a sum over the Bruhat order. We also present our implementation of Grothendieck polynomials and other bases in Sage. In a second part, we study the Tamari order binary trees. We obtain a new enumeration formula on the Tamari lattice and a new combinatorial prove of Chapoton's functional equation of the generating functions of Tamari intervals. We extend our results to the m-Tamari case and thus retrieve a formula given by Bousquet-Mélou, Préville-Ratelle and Fusy.

In 2003, Ciucu presented a unified way to enumerate tilings of lattice regions by using a certain Reduction Theorem (Ciucu, Perfect Matchings and Perfect Powers, Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 2003). In this paper we continue this line of work by investigating new families of lattice regions whose tilings are enumerated by perfect powers or products of several perfect powers. We prove a multi-parameter generalization of Bo-Yin Yang's theorem on fortresses (B.-Y. Yang, Ph.D. thesis, Department of Mathematics, MIT, MA, 1991). On the square lattice with zigzag paths, we consider two particular families of regions whose numbers of tilings are always a power of 3 or twice a power of 3. The latter result provides a new proof for a conjecture of Matt Blum first proved by Ciucu. We also consider several new lattices obtained by periodically applying two simple subgraph replacement rules to the square lattice. On some of those lattices, we get new families of regions whose numbers of tilings are given by products of several perfect powers. In addition, we prove a simple product formula for the number of tilings of a certain family of regions on a variant of the triangular lattice.

We explore monoids generated by operators on certain infinite partial orders. Our starting point is the work of Fomin and Greene on monoids satisfying the relations $(ur+\u{r+1})\u{r+1}ur=\u{r+1}ur(ur+\u{r+1})$ and $urut=usur$ if $|r-t|>1.$ Given such a monoid, the non-commutative functions in the variables $\u{}$ are shown to commute. Symmetric functions in these operators often encode interesting structure constants. Our aim is to introduce similar results for more general monoids not satisfying the relations of Fomin and Greene. This paper is an extension of a talk by the second author at the workshop on algebraic monoids, group embeddings and algebraic combinatorics at The Fields Institute in 2012.

The action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the set $Park_n$ of parking functions of size $n$ has received a great deal of attention in algebraic combinatorics. We prove that the action of $S_n$ on $Park_n$ extends to an action of $S_{n+1}$. More precisely, we construct a graded $S_{n+1}$-module $V_n$ such that the restriction of $V_n$ to $S_n$ is isomorphic to $Park_n$. We describe the $S_n$-Frobenius characters of the module $V_n$ in all degrees and describe the $S_{n+1}$-Frobenius characters of $V_n$ in extreme degrees. We give a bivariate generalization $V_n^{(\ell, m)}$ of our module $V_n$ whose representation theory is governed by a bivariate generalization of Dyck paths. A Fuss generalization of our results is a special case of this bivariate generalization.

In combinatorics on words, a word $w$ over an alphabet $Σ$ is said to avoid a pattern $p$ over an alphabet $Δ$ if there is no factor $f$ of $w$ such that $f= (p)$ where $h: Δ^*\toΣ^*$ is a non-erasing morphism. A pattern $p$ is said to be $k$-avoidable if there exists an infinite word over a $k$-letter alphabet that avoids $p$. We give a positive answer to Problem 3.3.2 in Lothaire's book "Algebraic combinatorics on words", that is, every pattern with $k$ variables of length at least $2^k$ (resp. $3\times2^{k-1}$) is 3-avoidable (resp. 2-avoidable). This improves previous bounds due to Bell and Goh, and Rampersad.
Semigroups embeddable in hyperplane face monoids

The left regular band structure on a hyperplane arrangement and its representation theory provide an important connection between semigroup theory and algebraic combinatorics. A finite semigroup embeds in a real hyperplane face monoid if and only if it is in the quasivariety generated by the monoid obtained by adjoining an identity to the two-element left zero semigroup. We prove that this quasivariety is on the one hand polynomial time decidable, and on the other minimally non-finitely based. A similar result is obtained for the semigroups embeddable in complex hyperplane semigroups.

Solutions to a linear Diophantine system, or lattice points in a rational convex polytope, are important concepts in algebraic combinatorics and computational geometry. The enumeration problem is fundamental and has been well studied, because it has many applications in various fields of mathematics. In algebraic combinatorics, MacMahon's partition analysis has become a general approach for linear Diophantine system related problems. Many algorithms have been developed, but "bottlenecks" always arise when dealing with complex problems. While in computational geometry, Barvinok's important result asserts the existence of a polynomial time algorithm when the dimension is fixed. However, the implementation by the LattE package of De Loera et. al. does not perform well in many situations. By combining excellent ideas in the two fields, we generalize Barvinok's result by giving a polynomial time algorithm for MacMahon's partition analysis in a suitable condition. We also present an elementary Euclid style algorithm, which might not be polynomial but is easy to implement and performs well. As applications, we contribute the generating series for magic squares of order 6.
Eigenvalue interlacing and weight parameters of graphs

Eigenvalue interlacing is a versatile technique for deriving results in algebraic combinatorics. In particular, it has been successfully used for proving a number of results about the relation between the (adjacency matrix or Laplacian) spectrum of a graph and some of its properties. For instance, some characterizations of regular partitions, and bounds for some parameters, such as the independence and chromatic numbers, the diameter, the bandwidth, etc., have been obtained. For each parameter of a graph involving the cardinality of some vertex sets, we can define its corresponding weight parameter by giving some "weights" (that is, the entries of the positive eigenvector) to the vertices and replacing cardinalities by square norms. The key point is that such weights "regularize" the graph, and hence allow us to define a kind of regular partition, called "pseudo-regular," intended for general graphs. Here we show how to use interlacing for proving results about some weight parameters and pseudo-regular partitions of a graph. For instance, generalizing a well-known result of Lovász, it is shown that the weight Shannon capacity $Θ^*$ of a connected graph $\G$, with $n$ vertices and (adjacency matrix) eigenvalues $λ_1>λ_2\ge\...\ge λ_n$, satisfies $$ Θ\le Θ^* \le \frac{\|\vecnu\|^2}{1-\frac{λ_1}{λ_n}} $$ where $Θ$ is the (standard) Shannon capacity and $\vecnu$ is the positive eigenvector normalized to have smallest entry 1. In the special case of regular graphs, the results obtained have some interesting corollaries, such as an upper bound for some of the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of a distance-regular graph. Finally, some results involving the Laplacian spectrum are derived. spectrum are derived.
A note on a Cayley graph of S_n
Recently in graph theory several authors have studied the spectrum of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_n generated by the transpositions (1, i) for 2 <= i <= n. Several conjectures were made and partial results were obtained. The purpose of this note is to point out that, as mentioned also by P. Renteln, this problem is actually already solved in another context. Indeed it is equivalent to studying the spectrum of so-called Jucys-Murphy elements in the algebra of the symmetric group, which is well understood. The aforementioned conjectures are direct consequences of the existing theory. We also present a related result from P. Biane, giving an asymptotic description of this spectrum. We insist on the fact that this note does not contain any new results, but has only been written to convey the information from the algebraic combinatorics community to graph theorists.
On almost distance-regular graphs

Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.
A new approach to an old problem of Erdos and Moser

Let $η_i, i=1,..., n$ be iid Bernoulli random variables, taking values $\pm 1$ with probability 1/2. Given a multiset $V$ of $n$ elements $v_1, ..., v_n$ of an additive group $G$, we define the \emph{concentration probability} of $V$ as
$$ρ(V) := \sup_{v\in G} P(η_1 v_1 + ... η_n v_n =v). $$
An old result of Erdos and Moser asserts that if $v_i $ are distinct real numbers then $ρ(V)$ is $O(n^{-3/2}\log n)$. This bound was then refined by Sarkozy and Szemeredi to $O(n^{-3/2})$, which is sharp up to a constant factor. The ultimate result dues to Stanley who used tools from algebraic geometry to give a complete description for sets having optimal concentration probability; the result now becomes classic in algebraic combinatorics.
In this paper, we will prove that the optimal sets from Stanley's work are stable. More importantly, our result gives an almost complete description for sets having large concentration probability.

Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommutative supersymmetric functions and colored free quasi-symmetric functions.

The representation theory of the symmetric groups is intimately related to geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and Lie theory. The spin representation theory of the symmetric groups was originally developed by Schur. In these lecture notes, we present a coherent account of the spin counterparts of several classical constructions such as the Frobenius characteristic map, Schur duality, the coinvariant algebra, Kostka polynomials, and Young's seminormal form.
