Species with potential arising from surfaces with orbifold points of order 2, Part II: arbitrary weights
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbfΣ=(Σ,M,O)$ be a surface with marked points and order-2 orbifold points which is either unpunctured or once-punctured closed, and $ω:O\rightarrow\{1,4\}$ a function. For each triangulation $τ$ of $\mathbfΣ$ we construct a cochain complex $C^\bullet(τ,ω)$. A colored triangulation is defined to be a pair consisting of a triangulation $τ$ and a 1-cocycle of $C^\bullet(τ,ω)$; the combinatorial notion of colored flip of colored triangulations is then defined as a refinement of the notion of flip of triangulations. Our main construction associates to each colored triangulation a species and a potential, and our main result shows that colored triangulations related by a colored flip have SPs related by the corresponding SP-mutation. We define the flip graph of $(Σ,M,O,ω)$, whose vertices are the pairs $(τ,x)$ with $τ$ a triangulation and $x$ a cohomology class in $H^1(C^\bullet(τ,ω))$, with an edge between $(τ,x)$ and $(σ,z)$ iff $(τ,ξ)$ and $(σ,ζ)$ are related by a colored flip for some cocycles $ξ$ and $ζ$ respectively representing $x$ and $z$. We prove that this graph is disconnected if $Σ$ is not contractible. For unpunctured surfaces we show that $(τ,ξ)$ and $(τ,ξ')$ yield isomorphic Jacobian algebras if and only if $[ξ]=[ξ']$ in cohomology. We prove that every SP-realization of any $(τ,ω)$ via a non-degenerate SP over a cyclic Galois extension with certain roots of unity is right-equivalent to one of the SPs we construct here. The species constructed here are species realizations of the $2^{|O|}$ skew-symmetrizable matrices assigned by Felikson-Shapiro-Tumarkin to any given $τ$. In the prequel to this paper we realized only one of these matrices via species, but therein we allowed the presence of arbitrarily many punctures.

Degrees of cohomological classes of multisinguliarities in Hurwitz spaces of rational functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main goal of the present paper are new formulae for degrees of strata in Hurwitz spaces of rational functions having two degenerate critical values with preimages of prescribed multiplicities. We consider the case where the multiplicities of the preimages of one critical value are arbitrary, while the second critical value has degeneracy of codimension~$1$. Our formulae are based on the universal cohomological expressions for codimension~$1$ strata in terms of certain basic cohomology classes in general Hurwitz spaces of rational functions obtained by M.~Kazarian and S.~Lando. We prove new relations valid in cohomology of Hurwitz spaces that were conjectured by M.~Kazarian on the base of computer experiments. As a corollary, we obtain new, previously unknown, explicit formulae for certain families of double Hurwitz numbers in genus~$0$. One may hope that the methods developed in the present paper are applicable to proving more general relations in cohomology rings of Hurwitz spaces and deducing more general formulae for double Hurwitz numbers.

Transition formulas for involution Schubert polynomials
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 24 (2018) 2991-3025 • View PublicationBIB
The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.

Restricting cohomology classes to disk and segment configuration spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The configuration space of n labeled disks of radius r inside the unit disk is denoted Conf_{n, r}(D^2). We study how the cohomology of this space depends on r. In particular, given a cohomology class of Conf_{n, 0}(D^2), for which r does its restriction to Conf_{n, r}(D^2) vanish? A related question: given the configuration space Seg_{n, r}(D^2) of n labeled, oriented segments of length r, it has a map to (S^1)^n that records the direction of each segment. For which r does this angle map have a continuous section? The paper consists of a collection of partial results, and it contains many questions and conjectures.

Differentials on Graph Complexes III - Deleting a Vertex
We prove that the hairy graph complex with the extra differential is almost acyclic. This justifies the construction of hairy graph cohomology classes by the waterfall mechanism. The main idea used in the paper is a new differential, deleting a vertex. We hope that the new differential can have further applications in the study of graph cohomology.

Wonderful Symmetric Varieties and Schubert Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.

Involution words: counting problems and connections to Schubert calculus for symmetric orbit closures
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 160 (2018), 217-260 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

Toric chordality
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometric change of Chow cohomology classes in projective toric varieties under the Weil-McMullen dual of the intersection product with a Lefschetz element. Based on this, we introduce toric chordality, a generalization of graph chordality to higher skeleta of simplicial complexes with a coordinatization over characteristic 0, leading us to a far-reaching generalization of Kalai's work on applications of rigidity of frameworks to polytope theory. In contrast to "homological" chordality, the notion that is usually studied as a higher-dimensional analogue of graph chordality, we will show that toric chordality has several advantageous properties and applications. -- Most strikingly, we will see that toric chordality allows us to introduce a higher version of Dirac's propagation principle. -- Aside from the propagation theorem, we also study the interplay with the geometric properties of the simplicial chain complex of the underlying simplicial complex, culminating in a quantified version of the Stanley--Murai--Nevo generalized lower bound theorem. -- Finally, we apply our technique to give a simple proof of the generalized lower bound theorem in polytope theory and -- prove the balanced generalized lower bound conjecture of Klee and Novik.

A tropical approach to a generalized Hodge conjecture for positive currents
Published in Duke Math. J. 166, no. 14 (2017), 2749-2813 • View PublicationBIB
Demailly showed that the Hodge conjecture is equivalent to the statement that any (p,p)-dimensional closed current with rational cohomology class can be approximated by linear combinations of integration currents associated to subvarieties, and asked whether any strongly positive (p,p)-dimensional closed current with rational cohomology class can be approximated by positive linear combinations of integration currents associated to subvarieties. Using tropical geometry, we construct a (p,p)-dimensional current on a smooth projective variety that does not satisfy the latter statement.

Cohomology classes of interval positroid varieties and a conjecture of Liu
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ (a diagram), one can associate a subvariety of a complex Grassmannian (a diagram variety), and a representation of a symmetric group (a Specht module). Liu has conjectured that the cohomology class of a diagram variety is represented by the Frobenius characteristic of the corresponding Specht module. We give a counterexample to this conjecture. However, we show that for the diagram variety of a permutation diagram, Liu's conjectured cohomology class $σ$ is at least an upper bound on the actual class $τ$, in the sense that $σ- τ$ is a nonnegative linear combination of Schubert classes. To do this, we exhibit the appropriate diagram variety as a component in a degeneration of one of Knutson's interval positroid varieties (up to Grassmann duality). A priori, the cohomology classes of these interval positroid varieties are represented by affine Stanley symmetric functions. We give a different formula for these classes as ordinary Stanley symmetric functions, one with the advantage of being Schur-positive and compatible with inclusions between Grassmannians.

Matroid theory for algebraic geometers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is a survey of matroid theory aimed at algebraic geometers. Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear subspaces and hyperplane arrangements. Not all matroids come from linear subspaces; those that do are said to be representable. Still, one may apply linear algebraic constructions to non-representable matroids. There are a number of different definitions of matroids, a phenomenon known as cryptomorphism. In this survey, we begin by reviewing the classical definitions of matroids, develop operations in matroid theory, summarize some results in representability, and construct polynomial invariants of matroids. Afterwards, we focus on matroid polytopes, introduced by Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova, which give a cryptomorphic definition of matroids. We explain certain locally closed subsets of the Grassmannian, thin Schubert cells, which are labeled by matroids, and which have applications to representability, moduli problems, and invariants of matroids following Fink-Speyer. We explain how matroids can be thought of as cohomology classes in a particular toric variety, the permutohedral variety, by means of Bergman fans, and apply this description to give an exposition of the proof of log-concavity of the characteristic polynomial of representable matroids due to the author with Huh.

Amplituhedron cells and Stanley symmetric functions

The amplituhedron was recently introduced in the study of scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ super Yang-Mills. We compute the cohomology class of a tree amplituhedron subvariety of the Grassmannian to be the truncation of an affine Stanley symmetric function.

Spaces of Hermitian operators with simple spectra and their finite-order cohomology
The topology of spaces of Hermitian operators in $C^n$ with non-simple spectra was studied by V.Arnold in a relation with the theory of adiabatic connections and the quantum Hall effect. The natural filtration of these spaces by the sets of operators with fixed numbers of eigenvalues defines the spectral sequence, providing interesting combinatorial and homological information on this stratification. We construct a different spectral sequence, also counting the homology groups of these spaces and based on the universal techniques of {\em topological order complexes} and resolutions of algebraic varieties, generalizing the combinatorial inclusion-exclusion formula and similar to the construction of finite degree knot invariants. This spectral sequence degenerates at the term $E_1$, is (conjecturally) multiplicative, and as $n$ grows then it converges to a stable spectral sequence counting the cohomology of the space of infinite Hermitian operators without multiple eigenvalues, all whose terms $E^{p,q}_r$ are finitely generated. It allows us to define the finite degree cohomology classes of this space, and to apply the well-known facts and methods of the topological theory of flag manifolds to the problems of geometrical combinatorics, especially concerning the continuous partially ordered sets of subspaces and flags.

Polynomials for symmetric orbit closures in the flag variety
Published in Transformation Groups, Volume 22 (2017), Issue 1, pp 267-290 • View PublicationBIB
In [Wyser-Yong '13] we introduced polynomial representatives of cohomology classes of orbit closures in the flag variety, for the symmetric pair $(GL_{p+q}, GL_p \times GL_q)$. We present analogous results for the remaining symmetric pairs of the form $(GL_n,K)$, i.e., $(GL_n,O_n)$ and $(GL_{2n},Sp_{2n})$. We establish the well-definedness of certain representatives from [Wyser '13]. It is also shown that the representatives have the combinatorial properties of nonnegativity and stability. Moreover, we give some extensions to equivariant $K$-theory.

The average dual surface of a cohomology class and minimal simplicial decompositions of infinitely many lens spaces
Discrete normal surfaces are normal surfaces whose intersection with each tetrahedron of a triangulation has at most one component. They are also natural Poincaré duals to 1-cocycles with $\ZZ/2\ZZ$-coefficients. For a fixed cohomology class in a simplicial poset the average Euler characteristic of the associated discrete normal surfaces only depends on the $f$-vector of the triangulation. As an application we determine the minimum simplicial poset representations, also known as crystallizations, of lens spaces $L(2k,q),$ where $2k=qr+1.$ Higher dimensional analogs of discrete normal surfaces are closely connected to the Charney-Davis conjecture for flag spheres.

Quantum Pieri rules for tautological subbundles

We give quantum Pieri rules for quantum cohomology of Grassmannians of classical types, expressing the quantum product of Chern classes of the tautological subbundles with general cohomology classes. We derive them by showing the relevant genus zero, three-pointed Gromov-Witten invariants coincide with certain classical intersection numbers.

Polynomials for GL_p x GL_q orbit closures in the flag variety
Published in Selecta Math., Volume 20, Issue 4 (2014), 1083-1110 • View PublicationBIB
The subgroup K=GL_p x GL_q of GL_{p+q} acts on the (complex) flag variety GL_{p+q}/B with finitely many orbits. We introduce a family of polynomials that specializes to representatives for cohomology classes of the orbit closures in the Borel model. We define and study K-orbit determinantal ideals to support the geometric naturality of these representatives. Using a modification of these ideals, we describe an analogy between two local singularity measures: the H-polynomials and the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials.

Giambelli and degeneracy locus formulas for classical G/P spaces
Published in Mosc. Math. J. 16 (2016), 125-177 • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a classical complex Lie group, P any parabolic subgroup of G, and X = G/P the corresponding homogeneous space, which parametrizes (isotropic) partial flags of subspaces of a fixed vector space. In the mid 1990s, Fulton, Pragacz, and Ratajski asked for global formulas which express the cohomology classes of the universal Schubert varieties in flag bundles -- when the space X varies in an algebraic family -- in terms of the Chern classes of the vector bundles involved in their definition. This has applications to the theory of degeneracy loci of vector bundles and is closely related to the Giambelli problem for the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of X. In this article, we explain the answer to these questions which was obtained in arXiv:0908.3628, in terms of combinatorial data coming from the Weyl group.

K-orbit closures on G/B as universal degeneracy loci for flagged vector bundles splitting as direct sums
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic description of $K$-orbit closures, which we provide via a detailed combinatorial analysis of the poset of "$(p,q)$-clans," which parametrize the orbit closures. We describe precisely how our formulas for the equivariant classes of $K$-orbit closures can be interpreted as formulas for the classes of such degeneracy loci in the Chern classes of the bundles involved. In the cases outside of type $A$, we suggest that the orbit closures should parametrize degeneracy loci involving a vector bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form, a single flag of subbundles which are isotropic or Lagrangian with respect to the form, and a splitting as a direct sum of subbundles with each summand satisfying some property (depending on $K$) with respect to the form. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus is conjectured for all cases in types $B$ and $C$.

Weak Order on Complete Quadrics
