On the cohomology of torus manifolds
Published in Osaka J. Math. 43 (2006), 711-746 • Search Publication
A torus manifold is an even-dimensional manifold acted on by a half-dimensional torus with non-empty fixed point set and some additional orientation data. It may be considered as a far-reaching generalisation of toric manifolds from algebraic geometry. The orbit space of a torus manifold has a rich combinatorial structure, e.g., it is a manifold with corners provided that the action is locally standard. Here we investigate relationships between the cohomological properties of torus manifolds and the combinatorics of their orbit quotients. We show that the cohomology ring of a torus manifold is generated by two-dimensional classes if and only if the quotient is a homology polytope. In this case we retrieve the familiar picture from toric geometry: the equivariant cohomology is the face ring of the nerve simplicial complex and the ordinary cohomology is obtained by factoring out certain linear forms. In a more general situation, we show that the odd-degree cohomology of a torus manifold vanishes if and only if the orbit space is face-acyclic. Although the cohomology is no longer generated in degree two under these circumstances, the equivariant cohomology is still isomorphic to the face ring of an appropriate simplicial poset.

Bott towers, crosspolytopes and torus actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry of Bott towers in the context of toric geometry, describing their associated fans arising from crosspolytopes. We compute the cohomology ring of each stage of the tower, and provide all monomial identities defining related affine toric varieties.

The equivariant Orlik-Solomon algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a real arrangement $A$, the complement $M(A)$ of the complexification of $A$ admits an action of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ by complex conjugation. We define the equivariant Orlik-Solomon algebra of $A$ to be the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant cohomology ring of $M(A)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We give a combinatorial presentation of this ring, and interpret it as a deformation of the ordinary Orlik-Solomon algebra into the Varchenko-Gel'fand ring of locally constant $\mattbb{Z}_2$-valued functions on the complement $C(A)$ of $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant homotopy type of $M(A)$ is determined by the oriented matroid of $A$. As an application, we give two examples of pairs of arrangements $A$ and $A'$ such that $M(A)$ and $M(A')$ have the same nonequivariant homotopy type, but are distinguished by the equivariant Orlik-Solomon algebra.

Realization of finite Abelian groups by nets in P^2
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the paper, we study special configurations of lines and points in the complex projective plane, so called k-nets. We describe the role of these configurations in studies of cohomology on arrangement complements. Our most general result is the restriction on k - it can be only 3,4, or 5. The most interesting class of nets is formed by 3-nets that relate to finite geometries, latin squares, loops, etc. All known examples of 3-nets in P^2 realize finite Abelian groups. We study the problem what groups can be so realized. Our main result is that, except for groups with all invariant factors under 10, realizable groups are isomorphic to subgroups of a 2-torus. This follows from the `algebraization' result asserting that in the dual plane, the points dual to lines of a net lie on a plane cubic.

Chow rings of toric varieties defined by atomic lattices
Published in Invent. Math. 155 (2004) 515-536. • View PublicationBIB
We study a graded algebra D=D(L,G) defined by a finite lattice L and a subset G in L, a so-called building set. This algebra is a generalization of the cohomology algebras of hyperplane arrangement compactifications found in work of De Concini and Procesi. Our main result is a representation of D, for an arbitrary atomic lattice L, as the Chow ring of a smooth toric variety that we construct from L and G. We describe this variety both by its fan and geometrically by a series of blowups and orbit removal. Also we find a Groebner basis of the relation ideal of D and a monomial basis of D over Z.

Counting ramified coverings and intersection theory on Hurwitz spaces II (Local structure of Hurwitz spaces and combinatorial results)
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hurwitz space is a compactification of the space of rational functions of a given degree. We study the intersection of various strata of this space with its boundary. A study of the cohomology ring of the Hurwitz space then allows us to obtain recurrence relations for certain numbers of ramified coverings of a sphere by a sphere with prescribed ramifications. Generating functions for these numbers belong to a very particular subalgebra of the algebra of power series.

Vanishing and non-vanishing criteria in Schubert calculus
Published in International Math. Research Notices (2006), 24590, 1-38 • View PublicationBIB
For any complex reductive connected Lie group G, many of the structure constants of the ordinary cohomology ring H^*(G/B; Z) vanish in the Schubert basis, and the rest are strictly positive. We present a combinatorial game, the ``root game'', which provides some criteria for determining which of the Schubert intersection numbers vanish. The definition of the root game is manifestly invariant under automorphisms of G, and under permutations of the classes intersected. Although these criteria are not proven to cover all cases, in practice they work very well, giving a complete answer to the question for G=SL(7,C). In a separate paper we show that one of these criteria is in fact necessary and sufficient when the classes are pulled back from a Grassmannian. More generally If G' -> G is an inclusion of complex reductive connected Lie groups, there is an induced map H^*(G/B) -> H^*(G'/B') on the cohomology of the homogeneous spaces. The image of a Schubert class under this map is a positive sum of Schubert classes on G'/B'. We investigate the problem of determining which Schubert classes appear with non-zero coefficient. This is the vanishing problem for branching Schubert calculus, which plays an important role in representation theory and symplectic geometry, as shown in [Berenstein-Sjamaar 2000]. The root game generalises to give a vanishing criterion and a non-vanishing criterion for this problem.

Increasing trees and Kontsevich cycles
Published in Geom. Topol. 8 (2004) 969-1012 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the combinatorial classes in the cohomology of the mapping class group of punctures surfaces defined by Witten and Kontsevich are polynomials in the adjusted Miller-Morita-Mumford classes. The leading coefficient was computed in [Kiyoshi Igusa: Algebr. Geom. Topol. 4 (2004) 473-520]. The next coefficient was computed in [Kiyoshi Igusa: math.AT/0303157, to appear in Topology]. The present paper gives a recursive formula for all of the coefficients. The main combinatorial tool is a generating function for a new statistic on the set of increasing trees on 2n+1 vertices. As we already explained in the last paper cited this verifies all of the formulas conjectured by Arbarello and Cornalba [J. Alg. Geom. 5 (1996) 705--749]. Mondello [math.AT/0303207, to appear in IMRN] has obtained similar results using different methods.

Hierarchies of simplicial complexes via the BGG-correspondence
Via the BGG-correspondence a simplicial complex D on [n] is transformed into a complex of coherent sheaves L(D) on the projective space n-1-space. In general we compute the support of each of its cohomology sheaves. When the Alexander dual D* is Cohen-Macaulay there is only one such non-zero cohomology sheaf. We investigate when this sheaf can be an a'th syzygy sheaf in a locally free resolution and show that this corresponds exactly to the case of D* being a+1-Cohen-Macaulay as defined by K.Baclawski. By putting further conditions on the sheaves we get nice subclasses of a+1- Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes whose f-vector depends only on a and the invariants n,d, and c. When a=0 these are the bi-Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes, when a=1 and d=2c cyclic polytopes are examples, and when a=c we get Alexander duals of the Steiner systems S(c,d,n). We also show that D* is Gorenstein* iff the associated coherent sheaf of D is an ideal sheaf.

Hard Lefschetz theorem and Hodge-Riemann relations for intersection cohomology of nonrational polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hard Lefschetz theorem for intersection cohomology of nonrational polytopes was recently proved by K. Karu [Ka]. This theorem implies the conjecture of R. Stanley on the unimodularity of the generalized $h$-vector. In this paper we strengthen Karu's theorem by introducing a canonical bilinear form $(\cdot ,\cdot)_Φ$ on the intersection cohomology $IH(Φ)$ of a complete fan $Φ$ and proving the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations for $(\cdot ,\cdot)_Φ$.

Lower Bounds for the Generalized h-Vectors of Centrally Symmetric Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a previous article, we proved tight lower bounds for the coefficients of the generalized $h$-vector of a centrally symmetric rational polytope using intersection cohomology of the associated projective toric variety. Here we present a new proof based on the theory of combinatorial intersection cohomology developed by Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler and Kaup. This theory is also valid for nonrational polytopes when there are no corresponding toric varieties. So we can establish our bounds for centrally symmetric polytopes even without requiring them to be rational.

The combinatorial quantum cohomology ring of $G/B$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A purely combinatorial construction of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold $G/B$ is presented. We show that the ring we construct is commutative, associative and satisfies the usual grading condition. By using results of two of our previous papers, we obtain a presentation of this ring in terms of generators and relations, as well as formulas for quantum Giambelli polynomials. We show that these polynomials satisfy a certain orthogonality property, which - for G=SL_n(C) - was proved previously by Fomin, Gelfand and Postnikov.

Resonant local systems on complements of discriminantal arrangements and sl_2 representations
Published in Geom. Dedicata 101 (2003), 217-234 • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the skew-symmetric cohomology of the complement of a discriminantal hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in local systems arising in the context of the representation theory of the Lie algebra sl_2. For a discriminantal arrangement in C^k, the skew-symmetric cohomology is nontrivial in dimension k-1 precisely when the "master function" which defines the local system on the complement has nonisolated critical points. In symmetric coordinates, the critical set is a union of lines. Generically, the dimension of this nontrivial skew-symmetric cohomology group is equal to the number of critical lines.

A survey of three recent developments in algebraic combinatorics: (1) the Laurent phenomenon, (2) Gromov-Witten invariants and toric Schur functions, and (3) toric h-vectors and intersection cohomology. This paper is a continuation of "Recent progress in algebraic combinatorics" (math.CO/0010218), which dealt with three other topics.

Quantum cohomology of Grassmannians modulo symmetries
The quantum cohomology of Grassmannians exhibits two symmetries related to the quantum product, namely a \Bbb {Z}/n action and an involution related to complex conjugation. We construct a new ring by dividing out these symmetries in an ideal theoretic way and analyze its structure, which is shown to control the sum of all coefficients appearing in the product of cohomology classes. We derive a combinatorial formula for the sum of all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients appearing in the expansion of a product of two Schur polynomials.

Cohomology of symplectic reductions of generic coadjoint orbits
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 132 (2004), no. 10, 3069--3074 • View PublicationBIB
Let mathcal{O}_lambda be a generic coadjoint orbit of a compact semi-simple Lie group K. Weight varieties are the symplectic reductions of mathcal{O}_lambda by the maximal torus T in K. We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to compute the cohomology ring of these varieties. Our formula relies on a Schubert basis of the equivariant cohomology of \mathcal{O}_lambda and it makes explicit the dependence on λand a parameter in Lie(T)^*.

Gauss-Manin connections for arrangements, II Nonresonant weights
Published in Amer. J. Math. 127 (2005), 569-594 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of an arrangement of complex hyperplanes in the cohomology of a nonresonant complex rank one local system. Aomoto and Kita determined this Gauss-Manin connection for arrangements in general position. We use their results and an algorithm constructed in this paper to determine this Gauss-Manin connection for all arrangements.

Properties of the residual circle action on a toric hyperkahler variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a manifold X obtained by a Kahler reduction of C^n, and we define its hyperkahler analogue M as a hyperkahler reduction of T^*C^n = H^n by the same group. In the case where the group is abelian and X is a smooth toric variety, M is a toric hyperkahler manifold, as defined by Bielawski-Dancer, and further studied by Konno and Hausel-Sturmfels. The manifold M carries a natural action of S^1, induced by the scalar action of S^1 on the fibers of T^*C^n. In this paper we study this action, computing its fixed points and its equivariant cohomology. As an application, we use the associated Z/2 action on the real locus of M to compute a deformation of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a smooth, generic, real hyperplane arrangement, depending nontrivially on the affine structure of the arrangement. This deformation is given by the Z/2-equivariant cohomology of the complement of the complexification, where Z/2 acts by complex conjugation.
