Equivariant Quantum Cohomology of the Odd Symplectic Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
The odd symplectic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}:=\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ parametrizes $k$ dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$ which are isotropic with respect to a general (necessarily degenerate) symplectic form. The odd symplectic group acts on $\mathrm{IG}$ with two orbits, and $\mathrm{IG}$ is itself a smooth Schubert variety in the submaximal isotropic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+2)$. We use the technique of curve neighborhoods to prove a Chevalley formula in the equivariant quantum cohomology of $\mathrm{IG}$, i.e. a formula to multiply a Schubert class by the Schubert divisor class. This generalizes a formula of Pech in the case $k=2$, and it gives an algorithm to calculate any multiplication in the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.
Splines over integer quotient rings
Given a graph with edges labeled by elements in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, a generalized spline is a labeling of each vertex by an integer $\mod m$ such that the labels of adjacent vertices agree modulo the label associated to the edge connecting them. These generalize the classical splines that arise in analysis as well as in a construction of equivariant cohomology often referred to as GKM-theory. We give an algorithm to produce minimum generating sets for the $\mathbb{Z}$-module of splines on connected graphs over $\mathbb{Z}/m \mathbb{Z}$. As an application, we give a quick heuristic to determine the minimum number of generators of the module of splines over $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. We also completely determine the ring of splines over $\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z}$ by providing explicit multiplication tables with respect to the elements of our minimum generating set. Our final result extends some of these results to splines over $\mathbb{Z}$.

Chamber structure for some equivariant relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ in genus $0$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study genus $0$ equivariant relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ whose corresponding relative stable maps are totally ramified over one point. For fixed number of marked points, we show that such invariants are piecewise polynomials in some parameter space. The parameter space can then be divided into polynomial domains, called chambers. We determine the difference of polynomials between two neighboring chambers. In some special chamber, which we called the totally negative chamber, we show that such a polynomial can be expressed in a simple way. The chamber structure here shares some similarities to that of double Hurwitz numbers.
A conjectural Peterson isomorphism in K-theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We state a precise conjectural isomorphism between localizations of the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of a flag variety and the equivariant K-homology ring of the affine Grassmannian, in particular relating their Schubert bases and structure constants. This generalizes Peterson's isomorphism in (co)homology. We prove a formula for the Pontryagin structure constants in the K-homology ring, and we use it to check our conjecture in few situations.

Tensor valuations on lattice polytopes
Published in Adv. Math. 319 (2017), 76-110 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial and the reciprocity theorems by Ehrhart \& Macdonald are extended to tensor valuations on lattice polytopes. A complete classification is established of tensor valuations of rank up to eight that are equivariant with respect to the special linear group over the integers and translation covariant. Every such valuation is a linear combination of the Ehrhart tensors which is shown to no longer hold true for rank nine.

Quiver Hall-Littlewood functions and Kostka-Shoji polynomials
Published in Pacific J. Math. 319 (2022) 397-437 • View PublicationBIB
For any triple $(i,a,μ)$ consisting of a vertex $i$ in a quiver $Q$, a positive integer $a$, and a dominant $GL_a$-weight $μ$, we define a quiver current $H^{(i,a)}_μ$ acting on the tensor power $Λ^Q$ of symmetric functions over the vertices of $Q$. These provide a quiver generalization of parabolic Garsia-Jing creation operators in the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. For a triple $(\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a},μ(\bullet))$ of sequences of such data, we define the quiver Hall-Littlewood function $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ as the result of acting on $1\inΛ^Q$ by the corresponding sequence of quiver currents. The quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials are the expansion coefficients of $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ in the tensor Schur basis. These polynomials include the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and parabolic Kostka polynomials (Jordan quiver) and the Kostka-Shoji polynomials (cyclic quiver) as special cases. We show that the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials are graded multiplicities in the equivariant Euler characteristic of a vector bundle on Lusztig's convolution diagram determined by the sequences $\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}$. For certain compositions of currents we conjecture higher cohomology vanishing of the associated vector bundle on Lusztig's convolution diagram. For quivers with no branching we propose an explicit positive formula for the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials in terms of catabolizable multitableaux. We also relate our constructions to $K$-theoretic Hall algebras, by realizing the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials as natural structure constants and showing that the quiver currents provide a symmetric function lifting of the corresponding shuffle product. In the case of a cyclic quiver, we explain how the quiver currents arise in Saito's vertex representation of the quantum toroidal algebra of type $\mathfrak{sl}_r$.

Configuration spaces, $\operatorname{FS^{op}}$-modules, and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids
The equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a braid matroid may be interpreted as the intersection cohomology of a certain partial compactification of the configuration space of n distinct labeled points in the plane, regarded as a graded representation of the symmetric group. We show that, in fixed cohomological degree, this sequence of representations of symmetric groups naturally admits the structure of an FS-module, and that the dual FS^op-module is finitely generated. Using the work of Sam and Snowden, we give an asymptotic formula for the dimensions of these representations and obtain restrictions on which irreducible representations can appear in their decomposition.

Equivariant division
Let C be a non-empty finite set, and Gamma a subgroup of the symmetric group S(C). Given a bijection f:A cross C to B cross C, the problem of Gamma-equivariant division is to find a quotient bijection h:A to B respecting whatever symmetries f may have under the action of S(A) cross S(B) cross Gamma. Say that Gamma is fully cancelling if this is possible for any f, and finitely cancelling if it is possible providing A,B are finite. Feldman and Propp showed that a permutation group is finitely cancelling just if it has a globally fixed point. We show here that a permutation group is fully cancelling just if it is trivial. This sheds light on the fact that all known division algorithms that eschew the Axiom of Choice depend on fixing an ordering for the elements of C.
A DG-extension of symmetric functions arising from higher representation theory
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Algebra, Volume 2, Issue 2, 2018, pp. 169-214 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate analogs of symmetric functions arising from an extension of the nilHecke algebra defined by Naisse and Vaz. These extended symmetric functions form a subalgebra of the polynomial ring tensored with an exterior algebra. We define families of bases for this algebra and show that it admits a family of differentials making it a sub-DG-algebra of the extended nilHecke algebra. The ring of extended symmetric functions equipped with this differential is quasi-isomorphic to the cohomology of a Grassmannian. We also introduce new deformed differentials on the extended nilHecke algebra that when restricted makes extended symmetric functions quasi-isomorphic to $GL(N)$-equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians.

Random walks on Ramanujan complexes and digraphs
Published in Journal of the European Mathematical Society, 22(11):3441-3466, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
The cutoff phenomenon was recently confirmed for random walks on Ramanujan graphs by the first author and Peres. In this work, we obtain analogs in higher dimensions, for random walk operators on any Ramanujan complex associated with a simple group $G$ over a local field $F$. We show that if $T$ is any $k$-regular $G$-equivariant operator on the Bruhat-Tits building with a simple combinatorial property (collision-free), the associated random walk on the $n$-vertex Ramanujan complex has cutoff at time $\log_k n$. The high dimensional case, unlike that of graphs, requires tools from non-commutative harmonic analysis and the infinite-dimensional representation theory of $G$. Via these, we show that operators $T$ as above on Ramanujan complexes give rise to Ramanujan digraphs with a special property ($r$-normal), implying cutoff. Applications include geodesic flow operators, geometric implications, and a confirmation of the Riemann Hypothesis for the associated zeta functions over every group $G$, previously known for groups of type $\widetilde A_n$ and $\widetilde C_2$.

Euler characteristics of cominuscule quantum K-theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an identity relating the product of two opposite Schubert varieties in the (equivariant) quantum K-theory ring of a cominuscule flag variety to the minimal degree of a rational curve connecting the Schubert varieties. We deduce that the sum of the structure constants associated to any product of Schubert classes is equal to one. Equivalently, the sheaf Euler characteristic map extends to a ring homomorphism defined on the quantum K-theory ring.

Non-normal affine monoids, modules and Poincaré series of plumbed 3-manifolds
Published in Acta Mathematica Hungarica 152 (2017), no. 2, 421-452 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a non-normal affine monoid together with its modules associated with a negative definite plumbed $3$-manifold $M$. In terms of their structure, we describe the $H_1(M,\mathbb{Z})$-equivariant parts of the topological Poincaré series. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the Seiberg--Witten invariants of $M$ and for polynomial generalizations defined in a previous paper of the authors.

Loop Models and $K$-Theory
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 069, 48 pages • View PublicationBIB
This is a review/announcement of results concerning the connection between certain exactly solvable two-dimensional models of statistical mechanics, namely loop models, and the equivariant $K$-theory of the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian. We interpret various concepts from integrable systems ($R$-matrix, partition function on a finite domain) in geometric terms. As a byproduct, we provide explicit formulae for $K$-classes of various coherent sheaves, including structure and (conjecturally) square roots of canonical sheaves and canonical sheaves of conormal varieties of Schubert varieties.

Grassmann-Grassmann conormal varieties, integrability, and plane partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a conjectural formula for sheaves supported on (irreducible) conormal varieties inside the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian, such that their equivariant $K$-class is given by the partition function of an integrable loop model, and furthermore their $K$-theoretic pushforward to a point is a solution of the level $1$ quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. We prove these results in the case that the Lagrangian is smooth (hence is the conormal bundle to a subGrassmannian). To compute the pushforward to a point, or equivalently to the affinization, we simultaneously degenerate the Lagrangian and sheaf (over the affinization); the sheaf degenerates to a direct sum of cyclic modules over the geometric components, which are in bijection with plane partitions, giving a geometric interpretation to the Razumov-Stroganov correspondence satisfied by the loop model.

Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 24, Issue 3 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce thagomizer matroids and compute the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a rank $n+1$ thagomizer matroid by showing that the coefficient of $t^k$ is equal to the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ with $k$ long ascents. We also give a conjecture for the $S_n$-equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a thagomizer matroid.

Combinatorial Models for the Variety of Complete Quadrics
We develop several combinatorial models that are useful in the study of the $SL_n$-variety $\mathcal{X}$ of complete quadrics. Barred permutations parameterize the fixed points of the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $SL_n$, while $μ$-involutions parameterize the orbits of a Borel subgroup of $SL_n$. Using these combinatorial objects, we characterize the $T$-stable curves and surfaces on $\mathcal{X}$, compute the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of $\mathcal{X}$, and describe a Białynicki-Birula cell decomposition for $\mathcal{X}$. Furthermore, we give a computational characterization of the Bruhat order on Borel orbits in $\mathcal{X}$.

Additive Combinatorics Using Equivariant Cohomology
We introduce a geometric method to study additive combinatorial problems. Using equivariant cohomology we reprove the Dias da Silva-Hamidoune theorem. We improve a result of Sun on the linear extension of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We generalize a theorem of G. Kós (the Grashopper problem) which in some sense is a simultaneous generalization of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We also prove a signed version of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture and the Grashopper problem. Most identities used are based on calculating the projective degree of an algebraic variety in two different ways.

Hilbert schemes of points on some classes of surface singularities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry and topology of Hilbert schemes of points on the orbifold surface [C^2/G], respectively the singular quotient surface C^2/G, where G is a finite subgroup of SL(2,C) of type A or D. We give a decomposition of the (equivariant) Hilbert scheme of the orbifold into affine space strata indexed by a certain combinatorial set, the set of Young walls. The generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points of the singular surface of type A or D is computed in terms of an explicit formula involving a specialized character of the basic representation of the corresponding affine Lie algebra; we conjecture that the same result holds also in type E. Our results are consistent with known results for type A, and are new for type D. The crystal basis theory of the fundamental representation of the affine Lie algebra corresponding to the surface singularity (via the McKay correspondence) plays an important role in our approach. The result gives a generalization of Göttsche's formula and has interesting modular properties related to the S-duality conjecture. The moduli space of torsion free sheaves on surfaces are higher rank analogs of the Hilbert schemes. In type A our results reveal their Euler characteristic generating function as well. Another very interesting class of normal surface singularities is the so-called cyclic quotient singularities of type (p,1). As an outlook we also obtain some results about the associated generating functions.

On toric degenerations of flag varieties

Following the historical track in pursuing $T$-equivariant flat toric degenerations of flag varieties and spherical varieties, we explain how powerful tools in algebraic geometry and representation theory, such as canonical bases, Newton-Okounkov bodies, PBW-filtrations and cluster algebras come to push the subject forward.
