Wronskians, total positivity, and real Schubert calculus
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 30 (2024), no. 1, Paper No. 1, 28 pages • View PublicationBIB
A complete flag in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a sequence of nested subspaces $V_1 \subset \cdots \subset V_{n-1}$ such that each $V_k$ has dimension $k$. It is called totally nonnegative if all its Plücker coordinates are nonnegative. We may view each $V_k$ as a subspace of polynomials in $\mathbb{R}[x]$ of degree at most $n-1$, by associating a vector $(a_1, \dots, a_n)$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ to the polynomial $a_1 + a_2x + \cdots + a_nx^{n-1}$. We show that a complete flag is totally nonnegative if and only if each of its Wronskian polynomials $\mathsf{Wr}(V_k)$ is nonzero on the interval $(0, \infty)$. In the language of Chebyshev systems, this means that the flag forms a Markov system or $ECT$-system on $(0, \infty)$. This gives a new characterization and membership test for the totally nonnegative flag variety. Similarly, we show that a complete flag is totally positive if and only if each $\mathsf{Wr}(V_k)$ is nonzero on $[0, \infty]$. We use these results to show that a conjecture of Eremenko (2015) in real Schubert calculus is equivalent to the following conjecture: if $V$ is a finite-dimensional subspace of polynomials such that all complex zeros of $\mathsf{Wr}(V)$ lie in the interval $(-\infty, 0)$, then all Plücker coordinates of $V$ are real and positive. This conjecture is a totally positive strengthening of a result of Mukhin, Tarasov, and Varchenko (2009), and can be reformulated as saying that all complex solutions to a certain family of Schubert problems in the Grassmannian are real and totally positive. We also show that our conjecture is equivalent to a totally positive version of the secant conjecture of Sottile (2003).

Gradient flows, adjoint orbits, and the topology of totally nonnegative flag varieties
Published in Comm. Math. Phys. 398 (2023), no. 3, 1213-1289 • View PublicationBIB
One can view a partial flag variety in $\mathbb{C}^n$ as an adjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}_λ$ inside the Lie algebra of $n \times n$ skew-Hermitian matrices. We use the orbit context to study the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety from an algebraic, geometric, and dynamical perspective. The paper has three main parts: (1) We introduce the totally nonnegative part of $\mathcal{O}_λ$, and describe it explicitly in several cases. We define a twist map on it, which generalizes (in type $A$) a map of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990) on an isospectral manifold of Jacobi matrices. (2) We study gradient flows on $\mathcal{O}_λ$ which preserve positivity, working in three natural Riemannian metrics. In the Kähler metric, positivity is preserved in many cases of interest, extending results of Galashin, Karp, and Lam (2017, 2019). In the normal metric, positivity is essentially never preserved on a generic orbit. In the induced metric, whether positivity is preserved appears to depends on the spacing of the eigenvalues defining the orbit. (3) We present two applications. First, we discuss the topology of totally nonnegative flag varieties and amplituhedra. Galashin, Karp, and Lam (2017, 2019) showed that the former are homeomorphic to closed balls, and we interpret their argument in the orbit framework. We also show that a new family of amplituhedra, which we call twisted Vandermonde amplituhedra, are homeomorphic to closed balls. Second, we discuss the symmetric Toda flow on $\mathcal{O}_λ$. We show that it preserves positivity, and that on the totally nonnegative part, it is a gradient flow in the Kähler metric up to applying the twist map. This extends a result of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990).

Shadows in the wild -- folded galleries and their applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
This survey is about combinatorial objects related to reflection groups and their applications in representation theory and arithmetic geometry. Coxeter groups and folded galleries in Coxeter complexes are introduced in detail and illustrated by examples. Further it is explained how they relate to retractions in Bruhat-Tits buildings and to the geometry of affine flag varieties and affine Grassmannians. The goal is to make these topics accessible to a wide audience.

Back stable K-theory Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the back stable $K$-theory Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. We define back stable (double) Grothendieck polynomials and double $K$-Stanley functions and establish coproduct expansion formulae. Applying work of Weigandt, we extend our previous results on bumpless pipedreams from cohomology to $K$-theory. We study finiteness and positivity properties of the ring of back stable Grothendieck polynomials, and divided difference operators in $K$-homology.

Bumpless pipe dreams encode Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
In their study of infinite flag varieties, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021) introduced bumpless pipe dreams in a new combinatorial formula for double Schubert polynomials. These polynomials are the TxT-equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties and of their flat degenerations. We give diagonal term orders with respect to which bumpless pipe dreams index the irreducible components of diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties, counted with scheme-theoretic multiplicity. This indexing was conjectured by Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022). This result establishes that bumpless pipe dreams are dual to and as geometrically natural as classical pipe dreams, for which an analogous anti-diagonal theory was developed by Knutson and Miller (2005).

B_{n-1}-bundles on the flag variety, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is the sequel to ``$B_{n-1}$-bundles on the flag variety, I". We continue our study of the orbits of a Borel subgroup $B_{n-1}$ of $G_{n-1}=GL(n-1)$ (resp. $SO(n-1)$) acting on the flag variety $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ of $G=GL(n)$ (resp. $SO(n)$). We begin by using the results of the first paper to obtain a complete combinatorial model of the $B_{n-1}$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ in terms of partitions into lists. The model allows us to obtain explicit formulas for the number of orbits as well as the exponential generating functions for the sequences $\{|B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}|\}_{n\geq 1}$ . We then use the combinatorial description of the orbits to construct a canonical set of representatives of the orbits in terms of flags. These representatives allow us to understand an extended monoid action on $B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}$ using simple roots of both $\mathfrak{g}_{n-1}$ and $\mathfrak{g}$ and show that the closure ordering on $B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}$ is the standard ordering of Richardson and Springer.

Which Schubert Varieties are Hessenberg Varieties?
Published • View PublicationBIB
After proving that every Schubert variety in the full flag variety of a complex reductive group $G$ is a general Hessenberg variety, we show that not all such Schubert varieties are adjoint Hessenberg varieties. In fact, in types A and C, we provide pattern avoidance criteria implying that the proportion of Schubert varieties that are adjoint Hessenberg varieties approaches zero as the rank of $G$ increases. We show also that in type A, some Schubert varieties are not isomorphic to any adjoint Hessenberg variety.

Minuscule analogues of the plane partition periodicity conjecture of Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass
Published in Combinatorial Theory 2(1), 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Let $P$ be a graded poset of rank $r$ and let $\mathbf{c}$ be a $c$-element chain. For an order ideal $I$ of $P \times \mathbf{c}$, its rowmotion $ψ(I)$ is the smallest ideal containing the minimal elements of the complementary filter of $I$. The map $ψ$ defines invertible dynamics on the set of ideals. We say that $P$ has NRP ("not relatively prime") rowmotion if no $ψ$-orbit has cardinality relatively prime to $r+c+1$. In work with R. Patrias (2020), we proved a 1995 conjecture of P. Cameron and D. Fon-Der-Flaass by establishing NRP rowmotion for the product $P = \mathbf{a} \times \mathbf{b}$ of two chains, the poset whose order ideals correspond to the Schubert varieties of a Grassmann variety $\mathrm{Gr}_a(\mathbb{C}^{a+b})$ under containment. Here, we initiate the general study of posets with NRP rowmotion. Our first main result establishes NRP rowmotion for all minuscule posets $P$, posets whose order ideals reflect the Schubert stratification of minuscule flag varieties. Our second main result is that NRP promotion depends only on the isomorphism class of the comparability graph of $P$.

Cauchy Formulas and Billey's Formulas for Generalized Grothendieck polynomials
We study the generalized double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials for all types. We study the Cauchy formulas for them. Using this, we deduce the K-theoretic version of the comodule structure map $α^*: K(G/B)\to K(G)\otimes K(G/B)$ induced by the group action map for reductive group $G$ and its flag variety $G/B$. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial formula to compute the localization of Schubert classes as a generalization of Billey's formula.

Infinite flags and Schubert polynomials
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e36 • View PublicationBIB
We study Schubert polynomials using geometry of infinite-dimensional flag varieties and degeneracy loci. Applications include Graham-positivity of coefficients appearing in equivariant coproduct formulas and expansions of back-stable and enriched Schubert polynomials. We also construct an embedding of the type C flag variety, and study the corresponding pullback map on (equivariant) cohomology rings.

Permutation actions on Quiver Grassmannians for the equioriented cycle via GKM-Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous work we equipped quiver Grassmannians for nilpotent representations of the equioriented cycle with an action of an algebraic torus. We show here that the equivariant cohomology ring is acted upon by a product of symmetric groups and we investigate this permutation action via GKM techniques. In the case of (type A) flag varieties, or Schubert varieties therein, we recover Tymoczko's results on permutation representations.

A singular Coxeter presentation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enlarge a Coxeter group into a category, with one object for each finite parabolic subgroup, encoding the combinatorics of double cosets. This category, the singular Coxeter monoid, is connected to the geometry of partial flag varieties. Our main result is a presentation of this category by generators and relations. We also provide a new description of reduced expressions for double cosets. We describe all the braid relations between such reduced expressions, and prove an analogue of Matsumoto's theorem. This gives a proper development of ideas first introduced by Geordie Williamson. In type A we also equip the singular Coxeter monoid with a diagrammatic presentation using webs.

Newton-Okounkov polytopes of flag varieties and marked chain-order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Marked chain-order polytopes are convex polytopes constructed from a marked poset, which give a discrete family relating a marked order polytope with a marked chain polytope. In this paper, we consider the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset of type A, and realize the associated marked chain-order polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies of the flag variety. Our realization connects previous realizations of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies in a uniform way. As an application, we prove that the flag variety degenerates into the irreducible normal projective toric variety corresponding to a marked chain-order polytope. We also construct a specific basis of an irreducible highest weight representation which is naturally parametrized by the set of lattice points in a marked chain-order polytope.
Standard monomial theory and toric degenerations of Richardson varieties in flag varieties
Published in Springer volume 'Women in Commutative Algebra - Proceedings of the 2019 WICA Workshop' • View PublicationBIB
We study standard monomial bases for Richardson varieties inside the flag variety. In general, writing down a standard monomial basis for a Richardson variety can be challenging, as it involves computing so-called defining chains or key tableaux. However, for a certain family of Richardson varieties, indexed by compatible permutations, we provide a very direct and straightforward combinatorial rule for writing down a standard monomial basis. We apply this result to the study of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties. In particular, we provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside flag varieties.

The isomorphism problem for Schubert varieties
Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.

On generalized Steinberg theory for type AIII
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 6 (2023), no. 1, 165-195 • View PublicationBIB
Given a symmetric pair $(G,K)=(\mathrm{GL}_{p+q}(\mathbb{C}),\mathrm{GL}_{p}(\mathbb{C})\times \mathrm{GL}_{q}(\mathbb{C}))$ of type AIII, we consider the diagonal action of $K$ on the double flag variety $\mathfrak{X}=\mathrm{Grass}(\mathbb{C}^{p+q},r)\times K/B_K$ whose first factor is a Grassmann variety for $G$ and whose second factor is a full flag variety of $K$. There is a finite number of orbits for this action, and our first result is a description of these orbits: parametrization, dimensions, closure relations, and cover relations. Specifically, the orbits are parametrized by certain pairs of partial permutations. Each orbit in $\mathfrak{X}$ gives rise to a conormal bundle. As in the references [5] and [6], by using the moment map associated to the action, we define a so-called symmetrized Steinberg map, respectively an exotic Steinberg map, which assigns to each such conormal bundle (thus to each orbit) a nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of $K$, respectively in the Cartan complement of that Lie algebra. Our main result is an explicit description of these Steinberg maps in terms of combinatorial algorithms on partial permutations, extending the classical Robinson--Schensted procedure on permutations. This is a thorough generalization of the results in [5], where we supposed $p=q=r$ and considered orbits of special forms.

Schubert puzzles and integrability II: multiplying motivic Segre classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In Schubert Puzzles and Integrability I we proved several "puzzle rules" for computing products of Schubert classes in K-theory (and sometimes equivariant K-theory) of d-step flag varieties. The principal tool was "quantum integrability", in several variants of the Yang--Baxter equation; this let us recognize the Schubert structure constants as q->0 limits of certain matrix entries in products of R- (and other) matrices of quantized affine algebra representations. In the present work we give direct cohomological interpretations of those same matrix entries but at finite q: they compute products of "motivic Segre classes", closely related to K-theoretic Maulik--Okounkov stable classes living on the cotangent bundles of the flag varieties. Without q->0, we avoid some divergences that blocked fuller understanding of d=3,4. The puzzle computations are then explained (in cohomology onlyin this work, not K-theory) in terms of Lagrangian convolutions between Nakajima quiver varieties. More specifically, the conormal bundle to the diagonal inclusion of a flag variety factors through a quiver variety that is not a cotangent bundle, and it is on that intermediate quiver variety that the R-matrix calculation occurs.

A transitivity result for ad-nilpotent ideals in type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper considers subspaces of the strictly upper triangular matrices, which are stable under Lie bracket with any upper triangular matrix. These subspaces are called ad-nilpotent ideals and there are Catalan number of such subspaces. Each ad-nilpotent ideal meets a unique largest nilpotent orbit in the Lie algebra of all matrices. The main result of the paper is that under an equivalence relation on ad-nilpotent ideals studied by Mizuno and others, the equivalence classes are the ad-nilpotent ideals with the same largest nilpotent orbit. We include two applications of the result, one to the higher vanishing of cohomology groups of vector bundles on the flag variety and another to the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of the symmetric group. Finally, some combinatorial results are discussed.

A diagrammatic approach to string polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for every complex classical group $G$ the string polytope associated to a special reduced decomposition and any dominant integral weight $λ$ will be a lattice polytope if and only if the highest weight representation of the Lie algebra of $G$ with highest weight $λ$ integrates to a representation of $G$ itself. This affirms an earlier conjecture and shows that every partial flag variety of a complex classical group admits a flat projective degeneration to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety.
An equivariant quantum Pieri rule for the Grassmannian on cylindric shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian is determined by the quantum Pieri rule for multiplying by Schubert classes indexed by row or column-shaped partitions. We provide a direct equivariant generalization of Postnikov's quantum Pieri rule for the Grassmannian in terms of cylindric shapes, complementing related work of Gorbounov and Korff in quantum integrable systems. The equivariant terms in our Graham-positive rule simply encode the positions of all possible addable boxes within one cylindric skew diagram. As such, unlike the earlier equivariant quantum Pieri rule of Huang and Li and known equivariant quantum Littlewood-Richardson rules, our formula does not require any calculations in a different Grassmannian or two-step flag variety.
