Shadows in the wild -- folded galleries and their applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
This survey is about combinatorial objects related to reflection groups and their applications in representation theory and arithmetic geometry. Coxeter groups and folded galleries in Coxeter complexes are introduced in detail and illustrated by examples. Further it is explained how they relate to retractions in Bruhat-Tits buildings and to the geometry of affine flag varieties and affine Grassmannians. The goal is to make these topics accessible to a wide audience.
Flag codes of maximum distance and constructions using Singer groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study flag codes of maximum distance. We characterize these codes in terms of, at most, two relevant constant dimension codes naturally associated to them. We do this first for general flag codes and then particularize to those arising as orbits under the action of arbitrary subgroups of the general linear group. We provide two different systematic orbital constructions of flag codes attaining both maximum distance and size. To this end, we use the action of Singer groups and take advantage of the good relation between these groups and Desarguesian spreads, as well as the fact that they act transitively on lines and hyperplanes.

Back stable K-theory Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the back stable $K$-theory Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. We define back stable (double) Grothendieck polynomials and double $K$-Stanley functions and establish coproduct expansion formulae. Applying work of Weigandt, we extend our previous results on bumpless pipedreams from cohomology to $K$-theory. We study finiteness and positivity properties of the ring of back stable Grothendieck polynomials, and divided difference operators in $K$-homology.
Hypergraph Turán Problems in $\ell_2$-Norm
There are various different notions measuring extremality of hypergraphs. In this survey we compare the recently introduced notion of the codegree squared extremal function with the Turán function, the minimum codegree threshold and the uniform Turán density. The codegree squared sum $\textrm{co}_2(G)$ of a $3$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is defined to be the sum of codegrees squared $d(x,y)^2$ over all pairs of vertices $x,y$. In other words, this is the square of the $\ell_2$-norm of the codegree vector. We are interested in how large $\textrm{co}_2(G)$ can be if we require $G$ to be $H$-free for some $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$. This maximum value of $\textrm{co}_2(G)$ over all $H$-free $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ is called the codegree squared extremal function, which we denote by $\textrm{exco}_2(n,H)$. We systemically study the extremal codegree squared sum of various $3$-uniform hypergraphs using various proof techniques. Some of our proofs rely on the flag algebra method while others use more classical tools such as the stability method. In particular, we (asymptotically) determine the codegree squared extremal numbers of matchings, stars, paths, cycles, and $F_5$, the $5$-vertex hypergraph with edge set $\{123,124,345\}$. Additionally, our paper has a survey format, as we state several conjectures and give an overview of Turán densities, minimum codegree thresholds and codegree squared extremal numbers of popular hypergraphs. We intend to update the arXiv version of this paper regularly.
Solving Turán's Tetrahedron Problem for the $\ell_2$-Norm
Published • View PublicationBIB
Turán's famous tetrahedron problem is to compute the Turán density of the tetrahedron $K_4^3$. This is equivalent to determining the maximum $\ell_1$-norm of the codegree vector of a $K_4^3$-free $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph. We introduce a new way for measuring extremality of hypergraphs and determine asymptotically the extremal function of the tetrahedron in our notion. The codegree squared sum, $\text{co}_2(G)$, of a $3$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is the sum of codegrees squared $d(x,y)^2$ over all pairs of vertices $xy$, or in other words, the square of the $\ell_2$-norm of the codegree vector of the pairs of vertices. We define $\text{exco}_2(n,H)$ to be the maximum $\text{co}_2(G)$ over all $H$-free $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraphs $G$. We use flag algebra computations to determine asymptotically the codegree squared extremal number for $K_4^3$ and $K_5^3$ and additionally prove stability results. In particular, we prove that the extremal $K_4^3$-free hypergraphs in $\ell_2$-norm have approximately the same structure as one of the conjectured extremal hypergraphs for Turán's conjecture. Further, we prove several general properties about $\text{exco}_2(n,H)$ including the existence of a scaled limit, blow-up invariance and a supersaturation result.

Bumpless pipe dreams encode Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
In their study of infinite flag varieties, Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021) introduced bumpless pipe dreams in a new combinatorial formula for double Schubert polynomials. These polynomials are the TxT-equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties and of their flat degenerations. We give diagonal term orders with respect to which bumpless pipe dreams index the irreducible components of diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties, counted with scheme-theoretic multiplicity. This indexing was conjectured by Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022). This result establishes that bumpless pipe dreams are dual to and as geometrically natural as classical pipe dreams, for which an analogous anti-diagonal theory was developed by Knutson and Miller (2005).

One-sided sharp thresholds for homology of random flag complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the random flag complex has a probability regime where the probability of nonvanishing homology is asymptotically bounded away from zero and away from one. Related to this main result we also establish new bounds on a sharp threshold for the fundamental group of a random flag complex to be a free group. In doing so we show that there is an intermediate probability regime in which the random flag complex has fundamental group which is neither free nor has Kazhdan's property (T).

B_{n-1}-bundles on the flag variety, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is the sequel to ``$B_{n-1}$-bundles on the flag variety, I". We continue our study of the orbits of a Borel subgroup $B_{n-1}$ of $G_{n-1}=GL(n-1)$ (resp. $SO(n-1)$) acting on the flag variety $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ of $G=GL(n)$ (resp. $SO(n)$). We begin by using the results of the first paper to obtain a complete combinatorial model of the $B_{n-1}$-orbits on $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ in terms of partitions into lists. The model allows us to obtain explicit formulas for the number of orbits as well as the exponential generating functions for the sequences $\{|B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}|\}_{n\geq 1}$ . We then use the combinatorial description of the orbits to construct a canonical set of representatives of the orbits in terms of flags. These representatives allow us to understand an extended monoid action on $B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}$ using simple roots of both $\mathfrak{g}_{n-1}$ and $\mathfrak{g}$ and show that the closure ordering on $B_{n-1}\backslash \mathcal{B}_{n}$ is the standard ordering of Richardson and Springer.

Which Schubert Varieties are Hessenberg Varieties?
Published • View PublicationBIB
After proving that every Schubert variety in the full flag variety of a complex reductive group $G$ is a general Hessenberg variety, we show that not all such Schubert varieties are adjoint Hessenberg varieties. In fact, in types A and C, we provide pattern avoidance criteria implying that the proportion of Schubert varieties that are adjoint Hessenberg varieties approaches zero as the rank of $G$ increases. We show also that in type A, some Schubert varieties are not isomorphic to any adjoint Hessenberg variety.

Minuscule analogues of the plane partition periodicity conjecture of Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass
Published in Combinatorial Theory 2(1), 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Let $P$ be a graded poset of rank $r$ and let $\mathbf{c}$ be a $c$-element chain. For an order ideal $I$ of $P \times \mathbf{c}$, its rowmotion $ψ(I)$ is the smallest ideal containing the minimal elements of the complementary filter of $I$. The map $ψ$ defines invertible dynamics on the set of ideals. We say that $P$ has NRP ("not relatively prime") rowmotion if no $ψ$-orbit has cardinality relatively prime to $r+c+1$. In work with R. Patrias (2020), we proved a 1995 conjecture of P. Cameron and D. Fon-Der-Flaass by establishing NRP rowmotion for the product $P = \mathbf{a} \times \mathbf{b}$ of two chains, the poset whose order ideals correspond to the Schubert varieties of a Grassmann variety $\mathrm{Gr}_a(\mathbb{C}^{a+b})$ under containment. Here, we initiate the general study of posets with NRP rowmotion. Our first main result establishes NRP rowmotion for all minuscule posets $P$, posets whose order ideals reflect the Schubert stratification of minuscule flag varieties. Our second main result is that NRP promotion depends only on the isomorphism class of the comparability graph of $P$.

The feasible region of induced graphs
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 158 (2023), 105-135 • View PublicationBIB
The feasible region $Ω_{\rm ind}(F)$ of a graph $F$ is the collection of points $(x,y)$ in the unit square such that there exists a sequence of graphs whose edge densities approach $x$ and whose induced $F$-densities approach $y$. A complete description of $Ω_{\rm ind}(F)$ is not known for any $F$ with at least four vertices that is not a clique or an independent set. The feasible region provides a lot of combinatorial information about $F$. For example, the supremum of $y$ over all $(x,y)\in Ω_{\rm ind}(F)$ is the inducibility of $F$ and $Ω_{\rm ind}(K_r)$ yields the Kruskal-Katona and clique density theorems. We begin a systematic study of $Ω_{\rm ind}(F)$ by proving some general statements about the shape of $Ω_{\rm ind}(F)$ and giving results for some specific graphs $F$. Many of our theorems apply to the more general setting of quantum graphs. For example, we prove a bound for quantum graphs that generalizes an old result of Bollobás for the number of cliques in a graph with given edge density. We also consider the problems of determining $Ω_{\rm ind}(F)$ when $F=K_r^-$, $F$ is a star, or $F$ is a complete bipartite graph. In the case of $K_r^-$ our results sharpen those predicted by the edge-statistics conjecture of Alon et. al. while also extending a theorem of Hirst for $K_4^-$ that was proved using computer aided techniques and flag algebras. The case of the 4-cycle seems particularly interesting and we conjecture that $Ω_{\rm ind}(C_4)$ is determined by the solution to the triangle density problem, which has been solved by Razborov.

Strong convexity in flip-graphs
The triangulations of a surface $Σ$ with a prescribed set of vertices can be endowed with a graph structure $\mathcal{F}(Σ)$. Its edges connect two triangulations that differ by a single arc. It is known that, when $Σ$ is a convex polygon or a topological surface, the subgraph $\mathcal{F}_\varepsilon(Σ)$ induced in $\mathcal{F}(Σ)$ by the triangulations that contain a given arc $\varepsilon$ is strongly convex in the sense that all the geodesic paths between two such triangulations remain in that subgraph. Here, we provide a related result that involves a triangle instead of an arc, in the case when $Σ$ is a convex polygon. We show that, when the three edges of a triangle $τ$ appear in (possibly distinct) triangulations along a geodesic path, $τ$ must belong to a triangulation in that path. More generally, we prove that certain $3$-dimensional triangulations related to the geodesics in $\mathcal{F}(Σ)$ are flag when $Σ$ is a convex polygon with flat vertices, and provide two consequences. The first is that $\mathcal{F}_\varepsilon(Σ)$ is not always strongly convex when $Σ$ is a convex polygon with either two flat vertices or two punctures. The second is that the number of arc crossings between two triangulations of a topological surface $Σ$ does not allow to approximate their distance in $\mathcal{F}(Σ)$ by a factor of less than $3/2$.

Planarity in Generalized Scattering Amplitudes: PK Polytope, Generalized Root Systems and Worldsheet Associahedra
In this paper we study the role of planarity in generalized scattering amplitudes, through several closely interacting structures in combinatorics, algebraic and tropical geometry. The generalized biadjoint scalar amplitude, introduced recently by Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM), is a rational function of homogeneous degree $-(k-1)(n-k-1)$ in $\binom{n}{k}-n$ independent variables; its poles can be constructed directly from the rays of the positive tropical Grassmannian. We introduce for each pair of integers $(k,n)$ with $2\le k\le n-2$ a system of generalized positive roots which arises as a specialization of the planar basis of kinematic invariants. We prove that the higher root polytope $\mathcal{R}^{(k)}_{n-k}$ has volume the k-dimensional Catalan number $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$, via a flag unimodular triangulation into simplices, in bijection with noncrossing collections of $k$-element subsets. We also give a bijection between certain positroidal subdivisions, called tripods, of the hypersimplex $Δ_{3,n}$ and noncrossing pairs of 3-element subsets that are not weakly separated. We show that the facets of the Planar Kinematics (PK) polytope, introduced recently by Cachazo and the author, are exactly the $\binom{n}{k}-n$ generalized positive roots. We show that the PK specialization of the generalized biadjoint amplitude evaluates to $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$. Looking forward, we give defining equations and conjecture explicit solutions using $(\mathbb{CP}^{n-k-1})^{\times (k-1)}$ via a notion of compatibility degree for noncrossing collections, for a two parameter family of generalized worldsheet associahedra $\mathcal{W}^+_{k,n}$. These specialize when $k=2$ to a certain dihedrally invariant partial compactification of the configuration space $M_{0,n}$ of $n$ distinct points in $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. Many detailed examples are given throughout to motivate future work.

Cauchy Formulas and Billey's Formulas for Generalized Grothendieck polynomials
We study the generalized double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials for all types. We study the Cauchy formulas for them. Using this, we deduce the K-theoretic version of the comodule structure map $α^*: K(G/B)\to K(G)\otimes K(G/B)$ induced by the group action map for reductive group $G$ and its flag variety $G/B$. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial formula to compute the localization of Schubert classes as a generalization of Billey's formula.

Koszul Gorenstein algebras from Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2023 (2023), no. 6, pp. 4998-5045 • View PublicationBIB
We associate with every pure flag simplicial complex $Δ$ a standard graded Gorenstein $\mathbb{F}$-algebra $R_Δ$ whose homological features are largely dictated by the combinatorics and topology of $Δ$. As our main result, we prove that the residue field $\mathbb{F}$ has a $k$-step linear $R_Δ$-resolution if and only if $Δ$ satisfies Serre's condition $(S_k)$ over $\mathbb{F}$, and that $R_Δ$ is Koszul if and only if $Δ$ is Cohen-Macaulay over $\mathbb{F}$. Moreover, we show that $R_Δ$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis if and only if $Δ$ is shellable. We give two applications: first, we construct quadratic Gorenstein $\mathbb{F}$-algebras which are Koszul if and only if the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$ is not in any prescribed set of primes. Finally, we prove that whenever $R_Δ$ is Koszul the coefficients of its $γ$-vector alternate in sign, settling in the negative an algebraic generalization of a conjecture by Charney and Davis.

Infinite flags and Schubert polynomials
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e36 • View PublicationBIB
We study Schubert polynomials using geometry of infinite-dimensional flag varieties and degeneracy loci. Applications include Graham-positivity of coefficients appearing in equivariant coproduct formulas and expansions of back-stable and enriched Schubert polynomials. We also construct an embedding of the type C flag variety, and study the corresponding pullback map on (equivariant) cohomology rings.

Permutation actions on Quiver Grassmannians for the equioriented cycle via GKM-Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous work we equipped quiver Grassmannians for nilpotent representations of the equioriented cycle with an action of an algebraic torus. We show here that the equivariant cohomology ring is acted upon by a product of symmetric groups and we investigate this permutation action via GKM techniques. In the case of (type A) flag varieties, or Schubert varieties therein, we recover Tymoczko's results on permutation representations.

A singular Coxeter presentation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enlarge a Coxeter group into a category, with one object for each finite parabolic subgroup, encoding the combinatorics of double cosets. This category, the singular Coxeter monoid, is connected to the geometry of partial flag varieties. Our main result is a presentation of this category by generators and relations. We also provide a new description of reduced expressions for double cosets. We describe all the braid relations between such reduced expressions, and prove an analogue of Matsumoto's theorem. This gives a proper development of ideas first introduced by Geordie Williamson. In type A we also equip the singular Coxeter monoid with a diagrammatic presentation using webs.

Erdös-Ko-Rado sets of flags of finite sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A flag of a finite set $S$ is a set $f$ of non-empty proper subsets of $S$ such that $A\subseteq B$ or $B\subseteq A$ for all $A,B\in f$. The set $\{|A|:A\in f\}$ is called the type of $f$. Two flags $f$ and $f'$ are in general position (with respect to $S$) when $A\cap B=\emptyset$ or $A\cup B=S$ for all $A\in f$ and $B\in f'$. We study sets of flags of a fixed type $T$ that are mutually not in general position and are interested in the largest cardinality of these sets. This is a generalization of the classical Erdös-Ko-Rado problem. We will give some basic facts and determine the largest cardinality in several non-trivial cases. For this we will define graphs whose vertices are flags and the problem is to determine the independence number of these graphs.

New structure on the quantum alcove model with applications to representation theory and Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quantum alcove model associated to a dominant weight plays an important role in many branches of mathematics, such as combinatorial representation theory, the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert calculus. For a dominant weight, it is proved by Lenart-Lubovsky that the quantum alcove model does not depend on the choice of a reduced alcove path, which is a shortest path of alcoves from the fundamental one to its translation by the given dominant weight. This is established through quantum Yang-Baxter moves, which biject the objects of the model associated with two such alcove paths, and can be viewed as a generalization of jeu de taquin slides to arbitrary root systems. The purpose of this paper is to give a generalization of quantum Yang-Baxter moves to the quantum alcove model corresponding to an arbitrary weight, which was used to express a general Chevalley formula in the equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds. The generalized quantum Yang-Baxter moves give rise to a "sijection" (bijection between signed sets), and are shown to preserve certain important statistics, including weights and heights. As an application, we prove that the generating function of these statistics does not depend on the choice of a reduced alcove path. Also, we obtain an identity for the graded characters of Demazure submodules of level-zero extremal weight modules over a quantum affine algebra, which can be thought of as a representation-theoretic analogue of the mentioned Chevalley formula. Other applications and some open problems involving "signed crystals" are discussed.
