A gallery model for affine flag varieties via chimney retractions
This paper provides a unified combinatorial framework to study orbits in certain affine flag varieties via the associated Bruhat-Tits buildings. We first formulate, for arbitrary affine buildings, the notion of a chimney retraction. This simultaneously generalizes the two well-known notions of retractions in affine buildings: retractions from chambers at infinity and retractions from alcoves. We then present a recursive formula for computing the images of certain minimal galleries in the building under chimney retractions, using purely combinatorial tools associated to the underlying affine Weyl group. Finally, for Bruhat-Tits buildings in the function field case, we relate these retractions and their effect on minimal galleries to double coset intersections in the corresponding affine flag variety.

An equivariant basis for the cohomology of Springer fibers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in combinatorics and geometric representation theory. In this paper, we analyze the equivariant cohomology of Springer fibers for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ using results of Kumar and Procesi that describe this equivariant cohomology as a quotient ring. We define a basis for the equivariant cohomology of a Springer fiber, generalizing a monomial basis of the ordinary cohomology defined by De Concini and Procesi and studied by Garsia and Procesi. Our construction yields a combinatorial framework with which to study the equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings of Springer fibers. As an application, we identify an explicit collection of (equivariant) Schubert classes whose images in the (equivariant) cohomology ring of a given Springer fiber form a basis.
Quotients of uniform positroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Flag matroids are a rich family of Coxeter matroids that can be characterized using pairs of matroids that form a quotient. We consider a class of matroids called positroids, introduced by Postnikov, and utilize their combinatorial representations to explore characterizations of flag positroids. Given a uniform positroid, we give a purely combinatorial characterization of a family of positroids that form quotients with it. We state this in terms of their associated decorated permutations. In proving our characterization we also fully describe the circuits of this family.
Small toric resolutions of toric varieties of string polytopes with small indices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. For a reduced word $\bf i$ of the longest element in the Weyl group of $G$ and a dominant integral weight $λ$, one can construct the string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$, whose lattice points encode the character of the irreducible representation $V_λ$. The string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$ is singular in general and combinatorics of string polytopes heavily depends on the choice of $\mathbf i$. In this paper, we study combinatorics of string polytopes when $G = SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and present a sufficient condition on $\mathbf i$ such that the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)}$ of the string polytope $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ has a small toric resolution. Indeed, when $\mathbf i$ has small indices and $λ$ is regular, we explicitly construct a small toric resolution of the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$ using a Bott manifold. Our main theorem implies that a toric variety of any string polytope admits a small toric resolution when $n < 4$. As a byproduct, we show that if $\mathbf i$ has small indices then $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ is integral for any dominant integral weight $λ$, which in particular implies that the anticanonical limit toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ_P)}$ of a partial flag variety $G/P$ is Gorenstein Fano. Furthermore, we apply our result to symplectic topology of the full flag manifold $G/B$ and obtain a formula of the disk potential of the Lagrangian torus fibration on $G/B$ obtained from a flat toric degeneration of $G/B$ to the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$.
Extended Nestohedra and their Face Numbers
Nestohedra are a family of convex polytopes that includes permutohedra, associahedra, and graph associahedra. In this paper, we study an extension of such polytopes, called extended nestohedra. We show that these objects are indeed the boundaries of simple polytopes, answering a question of Lam and Pylyavskyy. We also study the duals of (extended) nestohedra, giving a complete characterization of isomorphisms (as simplicial complexes) between the duals of extended nestohedra and a partial characterization of isomorphisms between the duals of nestohedra and extended nestohedra. In addition, we give formulas for their $f$-, $h$-, and $γ$-vectors. This includes showing that the $f$-vectors of the extended nestohedron corresponding to a forest $F$ and the nestohedron corresponding to the line graph of $F$ are the same, as well as showing that all flag extended nestohedra have nonnegative $γ$-vectors, thus proving Gal's conjecture for a large class of flag simple polytopes. We also relate the $f$- and $h$-vectors of the nestohedra and extended nestohedra, as well as give explicit formulas for the $h$- and $γ$-vectors in terms of descent statistics for a certain class of flag extended nestohedra. Finally, we define a partial ordering on partial permutations that is a join semilattice quotient of the weak Bruhar order on the symmetric group, and such that any linear extension of the partial order provides a shelling of the dual of the stellohedron.

A Chevalley formula for semi-infinite flag manifolds and quantum K-theory (Extended abstract)
We give a combinatorial Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight, in the torus-equivariant K-theory of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for anti-dominant fundamental weights in the (small) torus-equivariant quantum K-theory of the flag manifold G/B; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of the mentioned quantum K-theory. Moreover, in type A, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent Schubert classes in the (non-equivariant) quantum K-theory of the corresponding flag manifold.

Involution pipe dreams
Published in Canad. J. Math. 74 (2022), no. 5, 1310-1346 • View PublicationBIB
Involution Schubert polynomials represent cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures in the complete flag variety, where $K$ is the orthogonal or symplectic group. We show they also represent $T$-equivariant cohomology classes of subvarieties defined by upper-left rank conditions in the spaces of symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices. This geometry implies that these polynomials are positive combinations of monomials in the variables $x_i + x_j$, and we give explicit formulas of this kind as sums over new objects called involution pipe dreams. Our formulas are analogues of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for Schubert polynomials. In Knutson and Miller's approach to matrix Schubert varieties, pipe dream formulas reflect Gröbner degenerations of the ideals of those varieties, and we conjecturally identify analogous degenerations in our setting.

A Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals of the flag variety of affine type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Kazhdan-Lusztig variety is the intersection of a locally-closed Schubert cell with an opposite Schubert variety in a flag variety. We present a linear parametrization of the Schubert cells in the affine type A flag variety via Bott-Samelson maps, and give explicit equations that generate the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals in these coordinates. Furthermore, our equations form a Gröbner basis for the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals. Our result generalizes a result of Woo-Yong that gave a Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals in the type A flag variety.

Whittaker functions from motivic Chern classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a `motivic' analogue of the Weyl character formula, computing the Euler characteristic of a line bundle on a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ multiplied either by a motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell, or a Segre analogue of it. The result, given in terms of Demazure-Lusztig (D-L) operators, recovers formulas found by Brubaker, Bump and Licata for the Iwahori-Whittaker functions of the principal series representation of a $p$-adic group. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the classical Casselman-Shalika formula for the spherical Whittaker function. The proofs are based on localization in equivariant K theory, and require a geometric interpretation of how the Hecke dual (or inverse) of a D-L operator acts on the class of a point. We prove that the Hecke dual operators give Grothendieck-Serre dual classes of the motivic classes, a result which might be of independent interest. In an Appendix joint with Dave Anderson we show that if the line bundle is trivial, we recover a generalization of a classical formula by Kostant, Macdonald, Shapiro and Steinberg for the Poincar{é} polynomial of $G/B$; the generalization we consider is due to Akyıldız and Carrell and replaces $G/B$ by any smooth Schubert variety.

A Bruhat Atlas on the Wonderful Compactification of PSO(2n)/SO(2n-1)
A stratified manifold has a Bruhat atlas on it if it can be covered with open charts such that each chart is stratified-isomorphic to an (opposite) Bruhat cell in a (usually Kac-Moody) flag manifold. In this paper, we construct an anticanonical stratification on the wonderful compactification of the symmetric space $PSO(2n)/SO(2n-1)$ and show that the open charts are isomorphic to certain (opposite) Bruhat cells in the type $D_{n+1}$ flag manifold.
Semantic Limits of Dense Combinatorial Objects
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theory of limits of discrete combinatorial objects has been thriving for the last decade or so. The syntactic, algebraic approach to the subject is popularly known as "flag algebras", while the semantic, geometric one is often associated with the name ``graph limits''. The language of graph limits is generally more intuitive and expressible, but a price that one has to pay for it is that it is better suited for the case of ordinary graphs than for more general combinatorial objects. Accordingly, there have been several attempts in the literature, of varying degree of generality, to define limit objects for more complicated combinatorial structures. This paper is another attempt at a workable general theory of dense limit objects. Unlike previous efforts in this direction (with notable exception of [Ashwini Aroskar and James Cummings. Limits, regularity and removal for finite structures. Technical Report arXiv:1412.2014 [math.LO], arXiv e-print, 2014.]), we base our account on the same concepts from the first-order logic and the model theory as in the theory of flag algebras. We show how our definition naturally encompasses a host of previously considered cases (graphons, hypergraphons, digraphons, permutons, posetons, colored graphs, etc.), and we extend the fundamental properties of existence and uniqueness to this more general case. We also give an intuitive general proof of the continuous version of the Induced Removal Lemma based on the completeness theorem for propositional calculus. We capitalize on the notion of an open interpretation that often allows to transfer methods and results from one situation to another. Again, we show that some previous arguments can be quite naturally framed using this language.
Sharp bounds for decomposing graphs into edges and triangles
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 271-287 • View PublicationBIB
For a real constant $α$, let $π_3^α(G)$ be the minimum of twice the number of $K_2$'s plus $α$ times the number of $K_3$'s over all edge decompositions of $G$ into copies of $K_2$ and $K_3$, where $K_r$ denotes the complete graph on $r$ vertices. Let $π_3^α(n)$ be the maximum of $π_3^α(G)$ over all graphs $G$ with $n$ vertices. The extremal function $π_3^3(n)$ was first studied by Győri and Tuza [Decompositions of graphs into complete subgraphs of given order, Studia Sci. Math. Hungar. 22 (1987), 315--320]. In a recent progress on this problem, Král', Lidický, Martins and Pehova [Decomposing graphs into edges and triangles, Combin. Prob. Comput. 28 (2019) 465--472] proved via flag algebras that $π_3^3(n)\le (1/2+o(1))n^2$. We extend their result by determining the exact value of $π_3^α(n)$ and the set of extremal graphs for all $α$ and sufficiently large $n$. In particular, we show for $α=3$ that $K_n$ and the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor n/2\rfloor,\lceil n/2\rceil}$ are the only possible extremal examples for large $n$.

Structure constants for Chern classes of Schubert cells
Published • View PublicationBIB
A formula for the structure constants of the multiplication of Schubert classes is obtained in arXiv:1909.05283. In this note, we prove analogous formulae for the Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson (CSM) classes and Segre--Schwartz--MacPherson (SSM) classes of Schubert cells in the flag variety. By the equivalence between the CSM classes and the stable basis elements for the cotangent bundle of the flag variety, a formula for the structure constants for the latter is also deduced.

Schubert structure operators and K_T(G/B)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a formula for the structure constants of multiplication of equivariant Schubert classes in both equivariant cohomology and equivariant K-theory of Kac-Moody flag manifolds G/B. We introduce new operators whose coefficients compute these (in a manifestly polynomial, but not positive, way), resulting in a formula much like and generalizing the positive Andersen-Jantzen-Soergel/Billey and Graham/Willems formulae for the restriction of classes to fixed points. Our proof involves Bott-Samelson manifolds, and in particular, the (K-)cohomology basis dual to the (K-)homology basis consisting of classes of sub-Bott-Samelson manifolds.
Minimal flag triangulations of lower-dimensional manifolds
Published in Involve 13 (2020) 683-703 • View PublicationBIB
We prove the following results on flag triangulations of 2- and 3-manifolds. In dimension 2, we prove that the vertex-minimal flag triangulations of $\mathbb{R} P^2$ and $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$ have 11 and 12 vertices, respectively. In general, we show that $8+3k$ (resp. $8+4k$) vertices suffice to obtain a flag triangulation of the connected sum of $k$ copies of $\mathbb{R} P^2$ (resp. $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$). In dimension 3, we describe an algorithm based on the Lutz-Nevo theorem which provides supporting computational evidence for the following generalization of the Charney-Davis conjecture: for any flag 3-manifold, $γ_2:=f_1-5f_0+16\geq 16 β_1$, where $f_i$ is the number of $i$-dimensional faces and $β_1$ is the first Betti number over a field. The conjecture is tight in the sense that for any value of $β_1$, there exists a flag 3-manifold for which the equality holds.

Free flags over local rings and powering of high dimensional expanders
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2022:19, October 2022, Pages 14741-14769 • View PublicationBIB
Powering the adjacency matrix of an expander graph results in a better expander of higher degree. In this paper we seek an analogue operation for high-dimensional expanders. We show that the naive approach to powering does not preserve high-dimensional expansion, and define a new power operation, using geodesic walks on quotients of Bruhat-Tits buildings. Applying this operation results in high-dimensional expanders of higher degrees. The crux of the proof is a combinatorial study of flags of free modules over finite local rings. Their geometry describes links in the power complex, and showing that they are excellent expanders implies high dimensional expansion for the power-complex by Garland's local-to-global technique. As an application, we use our power operation to obtain new efficient double samplers.

Alcove paths and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
In their study of the equivariant K-theory of the generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$, Lenart and Postnikov introduced a combinatorial tool, called the alcove paths model. It provides a model for the highest weight crystals with dominant integral highest weights, generalizing the model by semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper, we prove a simple and explicit formula describing the crystal isomorphism between the alcove paths model and the Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns model for type $A$.

A tableau formula for vexillary Schubert polynomials in type C
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse's double Schubert polynomials represent the equivariant cohomology classes of Schubert varieties in the type C flag varieties. The goal of this paper is to obtain a new tableau formula of these polynomials associated to vexillary signed permutations introduced by Anderson-Fulton. To achieve that goal, we introduce flagged factorial (Schur) $Q$-functions, combinatorially defined in terms of (flagged) marked shifted tableaux for flagged strict partitions, and prove their Schur-Pfaffian formula. As an application, we also obtain a new combinatorial formula of factorial $Q$-functions of Ivanov in which monomials bijectively correspond to flagged marked shifted tableaux.

The formula is given in terms of Littlewood-Richardson tableaux with certain flag conditions which vanish in a stable range. As an application, we give a combinatorial formula for the Lusztig $t$-weight multiplicity $K_{μ0}(t)$ of type $B_n$ and $D_n$ with highest weight $μ$ and weight $0$.
