Hecke insertion and maximal increasing and decreasing sequences in fillings of stack polyominoes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the number of 01-fillings of a given stack polyomino (a polyomino with justified rows whose lengths form a unimodal sequence) with at most one 1 per column which do not contain a fixed-size northeast chain and a fixed-size southeast chain, depends only on the set of row lengths of the polyomino. The proof is via a bijection between fillings of stack polyominoes which differ only in the position of one row and uses the Hecke insertion algorithm by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong and the jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux of Thomas and Yong. Moreover, our bijection gives another proof of the result by Chen, Guo, and Pang that the crossing number and the nesting number have a symmetric joint distribution over linked partitions.

Tableau Stabilization and Rectangular Tableaux Fixed by Promotion Powers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce tableau stabilization, a new phenomenon and statistic on Young tableaux based on jeu de taquin. We investigate bounds for tableau stabilization, the shape of stabilized tableaux, and tableau stabilization as a permutation statistic. We apply tableau stabilization to construct the sufficiently large rectangular tableaux fixed by powers of promotion, which were counted by Brendon Rhoades via the cyclic sieving phenomenon

Schubert curves in the orthogonal Grassmannian
We develop a combinatorial rule to compute the real geometry of type B Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$ in the orthogonal Grassmannian $\mathrm{OG}_n$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to orthogonal flags osculating the rational normal curve. Our results are natural analogs of results previously known only in type A. First, using the type B Wronski map, we show that the real locus of the Schubert curve has a natural covering map to $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with monodromy operator $ω$ defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion on skew shifted semistandard tableaux. We then introduce two different algorithms to compute $ω$ without rectifying the skew tableau. The first uses recently-developed shifted tableau crystal operators, while the second uses local switches much like jeu de taquin. The switching algorithm further computes the K-theory coefficient of the Schubert curve: its nonadjacent switches precisely enumerate Pechenik and Yong's shifted genomic tableaux. The connection to K-theory also gives rise to a partial understanding of the complex geometry of these curves.

Randomized Schützenberger's jeu de taquin and approximate calculation of co-transition probabilities of a central Markov process on the 3D Young graph
There exists a well-known hook-length formula for calculating the dimensions of 2D Young diagrams. Unfortunately, the analogous formula for 3D case is unknown. We introduce an approach for calculating the estimations of dimensions of three-dimensional Young diagrams also known as plane partitions. The most difficult part of this task is the calculation of co-transition probabilities for a central Markov process. We propose an algorithm for approximate calculation of these probabilities. It generates numerous random paths to a given diagram. In case the generated paths are uniformly distributed, the proportion of paths passing through a certain branch gives us an approximate value of the co-transition probability. As our numerical experiments show, the random generator based on the randomized variant of the Schützenberger transformation allows to obtain accurate values of co-transition probabilities. Also a method to construct 3D Young diagrams with large dimensions is proposed.

Promotion on oscillating and alternating tableaux and rotation of matchings and permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using Henriques' and Kamnitzer's cactus groups, Schützenberger's promotion and evacuation operators on standard Young tableaux can be generalised in a very natural way to operators acting on highest weight words in tensor products of crystals. For the crystals corresponding to the vector representations of the symplectic groups, we show that Sundaram's map to perfect matchings intertwines promotion and rotation of the associated chord diagrams, and evacuation and reversal. We also exhibit a map with similar features for the crystals corresponding to the adjoint representations of the general linear groups. We prove these results by applying van Leeuwen's generalisation of Fomin's local rules for jeu de taquin, connected to the action of the cactus groups by Lenart, and variants of Fomin's growth diagrams for the Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

Jeu de taquin, uniqueness of rectification, and ultradiscrete KP
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study tropical-theoretic aspects of the ``rectification algorithm'' on skew Young tableaux. It is shown that the algorithm is interpreted as a time evolution of some tropical integrable system. By using this fact, we construct a new combinatorial map that is essentially equivalent to the rectification algorithm. Some of properties of the rectification can be seen more clearly via this map. For example, the uniqueness of a rectification boils down to an easy combinatorial problem. Our method is mainly based on the two previous researches: the theory of geometric tableaux by Noumi-Yamada, and the study on the relationship between jeu de taquin slides and the ultradiscrete KP equation by Mikami and Katayama-Kakei.

d-Complete posets: local structural axioms, properties, and equivalent definitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Although d-complete posets arose along the interface between algebraic combinatorics and Lie theory, they are defined using only requirements on their local structure. These posets are a mutual generalization of rooted trees, shapes, and shifted shapes. They possess Stanley's hook product property for their P-partition generating functions and Schutzenberger's well defined jeu de taquin rectification property. The original definition of d-complete poset was lengthy, but more succinct definitions were later developed. Here several definitions are shown to be equivalent. The basic properties of d-complete posets are summarized. Background and a partial bibliography for these posets is given.

Promotion of increasing tableaux: frames and homomesies
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 24(3), Paper #P3.50, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
A key fact about M.-P. Schützenberger's (1972) promotion operator on rectangular standard Young tableaux is that iterating promotion once per entry recovers the original tableau. For tableaux with strictly increasing rows and columns, H. Thomas and A. Yong (2009) introduced a theory of $K$-jeu de taquin with applications to $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus. The author (2014) studied a $K$-promotion operator $\mathcal{P}$ derived from this theory, but showed that the key fact does not generally extend to $K$-promotion of such increasing tableaux. Here we show that the key fact holds for labels on the boundary of the rectangle. That is, for $T$ a rectanglar increasing tableau with entries bounded by $q$, we have $\mathsf{Frame}(\mathcal{P}^q(T)) = \mathsf{Frame}(T)$, where $\mathsf{Frame}(U)$ denotes the restriction of $U$ to its first and last row and column. Using this fact, we obtain a family of homomesy results on the average value of certain statistics over $K$-promotion orbits, extending a $2$-row theorem of J. Bloom, D. Saracino, and the author (2016) to arbitrary rectangular shapes.

Genomic Tableaux
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 45 (2017), Issue 3, pp 649-685 • View PublicationBIB
We explain how genomic tableaux [Pechenik-Yong '15] are a semistandard complement to increasing tableaux [Thomas-Yong '09]. From this perspective, one inherits genomic versions of jeu de taquin, Knuth equivalence, infusion and Bender-Knuth involutions, as well as Schur functions from (shifted) semistandard Young tableaux theory. These are applied to obtain new Littlewood-Richardson rules for K-theory Schubert calculus of Grassmannians (after [Buch '02]) and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians (after [Clifford-Thomas-Yong '14], [Buch-Ravikumar '12]). For the unsolved case of Lagrangian Grassmannians, sharp upper and lower bounds using genomic tableaux are conjectured.

Monodromy and K-theory of Schubert curves via generalized jeu de taquin
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a combinatorial connection between the real geometry and the $K$-theory of complex Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the real geometry of these curves is described by the orbits of a map $ω$ on skew tableaux, defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion. In particular, the real locus of the Schubert curve is naturally a covering space of $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with $ω$ as the monodromy operator. We provide a local algorithm for computing $ω$ without rectifying the skew tableau, and show that certain steps in our algorithm are in bijective correspondence with Pechenik and Yong's genomic tableaux, which enumerate the $K$-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficient associated to the Schubert curve. We then give purely combinatorial proofs of several numerical results involving the $K$-theory and real geometry of $S(λ_\bullet)$.

Monodromy and $K$-theory of Schubert Curves via Generalized Jeu de Taquin

Using this bijection, we give purely combinatorial proofs of several numerical results involving the $K$-theory and real geometry of $S(λ_\bullet)$.
Shifted Hecke insertion and the K-theory of OG(n,2n+1)

Patrias and Pylyavskyy introduced shifted Hecke insertion as an application of their theory of dual filtered graphs. We use shifted Hecke insertion to construct symmetric function representatives for the K-theory of the orthogonal Grassmannian. These representatives are closely related to the shifted Grothendieck polynomials of Ikeda and Naruse. We then recover the K-theory structure coefficients of Clifford-Thomas-Yong/Buch-Samuel by introducing a shifted K-theoretic Poirier-Reutenauer algebra. Our proofs depend on the theory of shifted K-theoretic jeu de taquin and the weak K-Knuth relations.

Equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians
Published in Forum of Mathematics Pi (2017), Vol. 5, e3, 128pp • View PublicationBIB
We address a unification of the Schubert calculus problems solved by [A. Buch '02] and [A. Knutson-T. Tao '03]. That is, we prove a combinatorial rule for the structure coefficients in the torus-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians with respect to the basis of Schubert structure sheaves. We thereby deduce the conjectural rule of [H. Thomas-A. Yong '13] for the same coefficients. Both rules are positive in the sense of [D. Anderson-S. Griffeth-E. Miller '11] (and moreover in a stronger form). Our work is based on the combinatorics of genomic tableaux and a generalization of [M.-P. Schutzenberger '77]'s jeu de taquin.

One-dimensional Schubert problems with respect to osculating flags
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 69 (2017) 143-185 • View PublicationBIB
We consider Schubert problems with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. These problems are of special interest when the osculation points are all real -- in this case, for zero-dimensional Schubert problems, the solutions are "as real as possible". Recent work by Speyer has extended the theory to the moduli space $\overline{M_{0,r}}$, allowing the points to collide. These give rise to smooth covers of $\overline{M_{0,r}}(\mathbb{R})$, with structure and monodromy described by Young tableaux and jeu de taquin. In this paper, we give analogous results on one-dimensional Schubert problems over $\overline{M_{0,r}}$. Their (real) geometry turns out to be described by orbits of Schützenberger promotion and a related operation involving tableau evacuation. Over $M_{0,r}$, our results show that the real points of the solution curves are smooth. We also find a new identity involving `first-order' K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, for which there does not appear to be a known combinatorial proof.

A uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are colored directed graphs encoding the structure of certain finite-dimensional representations of affine Lie algebras. A tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals has recently been realized in a uniform way, for all untwisted affine types, in terms of the quantum alcove model. We enhance this model by using it to give a uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix, i.e., the unique affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals. In other words, we are generalizing to all Lie types Schützenberger's sliding game (jeu de taquin) for Young tableaux, which realizes the combinatorial $R$-matrix in type $A$. Our construction is in terms of certain combinatorial moves, called quantum Yang-Baxter moves, which are explicitly described by reduction to the rank 2 root systems. We also show that the quantum alcove model does not depend on the choice of a sequence of alcoves joining the fundamental one to a translation of it.

Backward jeu de taquin slides for composition tableaux and a noncommutative Pieri rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a backward jeu de taquin slide analogue on semistandard reverse composition tableaux. These tableaux were first studied by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg when defining quasisymmetric Schur functions. Our algorithm for performing backward jeu de taquin slides on semistandard reverse composition tableaux results in a natural operator on compositions that we call the jdt operator. This operator in turn gives rise to a new poset structure on compositions whose maximal chains we enumerate. As an application, we also give a noncommutative Pieri rule for noncommutative Schur functions that uses the jdt operators.

Increasing tableaux and Narayana numbers
Published in Ann. Comb. 20 (2016), 609-621 • View PublicationBIB
We give a counting formula for the set of rectangular increasing tableaux in terms of generalized Narayana numbers. We define small $m$-Schröder paths and give a bijection between the set of increasing rectangular tableaux and small $m$-Schröder paths, generalizing a result of Pechenik [3]. Using $K$-jeu de taquin promotion, which was defined by Thomas and Yong [10], we give a cyclic sieving phenomenon for the set of increasing hook tableaux.

Maximal increasing sequences in fillings of almost-moon polyominoes
It was proved by Rubey that the number of fillings with zeros and ones of a given moon polyomino that do not contain a northeast chain of size $k$ depends only on the set of columns of the polyomino, but not the shape of the polyomino. Rubey's proof is an adaption of jeu de taquin and promotion for arbitrary fillings of moon polyominoes. In this paper we present a bijective proof for this result by considering fillings of almost-moon polyominoes, which are moon polyominoes after removing one of the rows. Explicitly, we construct a bijection which preserves the size of the largest northeast chains of the fillings when two adjacent rows of the polyomino are exchanged. This bijection also preserves the column sum of the fillings. We also present a bijection that preserves the size of the largest northeast chains, the row sum and the column sum if every row of the fillings has at most one 1.

Bijective proofs of character evaluations using trace forest of the jeu de taquin
Irreducible characters in the symmetric group are of special interest in combinatorics. They can be expressed either combinatorially with ribbon tableaux, or algebraically with contents. In this paper, these two expressions are related in a combinatorial way. We first introduce a fine structure in the famous jeu de taquin called "trace forest", with which we are able to count certain types of ribbon tableaux, leading to a simple bijective proof of a character evaluation formula in terms of contents that dates back to Frobenius (1901). Inspired by this proof, we give an inductive scheme that gives combinatorial proofs to more complicated formulae for characters in terms of contents.
