An inverse Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule and extensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chow rings of flag varieties have bases of Schubert cycles $σ_u$, indexed by permutations. A major problem of algebraic combinatorics is to give a positive combinatorial formula for the structure constants of this basis. The celebrated Littlewood-Richardson rules solve this problem for special products $σ_u \cdot σ_v$ where $u$ and $v$ are $p$-Grassmannian permutations. Building on work of Wyser, we introduce backstable clans to prove such a rule for the problem of computing the product $σ_u \cdot σ_v$ when $u$ is $p$-inverse Grassmannian and $v$ is $q$-inverse Grassmannian. By establishing several new families of linear relations among structure constants, we further extend this result to obtain a positive combinatorial rule for $σ_u \cdot σ_v$ in the case that $u$ is covered in weak Bruhat order by a $p$-inverse Grassmannian permutation and $v$ is a $q$-inverse Grassmannian permutation.

A Generalized RSK for Enumerating Linear Series on $n$-pointed Curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial proof of a recent geometric result of Farkas and Lian on linear series on curves with prescribed incidence conditions. The result states that the expected number of degree-$d$ morphisms from a general genus $g$, $n$-marked curve $C$ to $\mathbb{P}^r$, sending the marked points on $C$ to specified general points in $\mathbb{P}^r$, is equal to $(r+1)^g$ for sufficiently large $d$. This computation may be rephrased as an intersection problem on Grassmannians, which has a natural combinatorial interpretation in terms of Young tableaux by the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule. We give a bijection, generalizing the well-known RSK correspondence, between the tableaux in question and the $(r+1)$-ary sequences of length $g$, and we explore our bijection's combinatorial properties. We also apply similar methods to give a combinatorial interpretation and proof of the fact that, in the modified setting in which $r=1$ and several marked points map to the same point in $\mathbb{P}^1$, the number of morphisms is still $2^g$ for sufficiently large $d$.

Quantum K-theory of Incidence Varieties
Published in European Journal of Mathematics (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture of Buch and Mihalcea in the case of the incidence variety X=Fl(1,n-1;n) and determine the structure of its (T-equivariant) quantum K-theory ring. Our results are an interplay between geometry and combinatorics. The geometric side concerns Gromov-Witten varieties of 3-pointed genus 0 stable maps to X with markings sent to Schubert varieties, while on the combinatorial side are formulas for the (equivariant) quantum K-theory ring of X. We prove that the Gromov-Witten variety is rationally connected when one of the defining Schubert varieties is a divisor and another is a point. This implies that the (equivariant) K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants defined by two Schubert classes and a Schubert divisor class can be computed in the ordinary (equivariant) K-theory ring of X. We derive a positive Chevalley formula for the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of X and a positive Littlewood-Richardson rule for the non-equivariant quantum K-theory ring of X. The Littlewood-Richardson rule in turn implies that non-empty Gromov-Witten varieties given by Schubert varieties in general position have arithmetic genus 0.

$s$-Catalan numbers and Littlewood-Richardson polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we study two generalizations of the Catalan numbers, namely the $s$-Catalan numbers and the spin $s$-Catalan numbers. These numbers first appeared in relation to quantum physics problems about spin multiplicities. We give a combinatorial description for these numbers in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and explain some of the properties they exhibit in terms of Littlewood-Richardson polynomials.

Inequality of a class of near-ribbon skew Schur Q-functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
While equality of skew Schur functions is well understood, the problem of determining when two skew Schur $Q$ functions are equal is still largely open. It has been studied in the case of ribbon shapes in 2008 by Barekat and van Willigenburg, and this paper approaches the problem for near-ribbon shapes, formed by adding one box to a ribbon skew shape. We particularly consider frayed ribbons, that is, the near-ribbons whose shifted skew shape is not an ordinary skew shape. We conjecture, with evidence, that all Schur $Q$ functions of frayed ribbon shape are distinct up to antipodal reflection. We prove this conjecture for several infinite families of frayed ribbons, using a new approach via the "lattice walks" version of the shifted Littlewood-Richardson rule discovered in 2018 by Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo.

Newell-Littlewood numbers III: eigencones and GIT-semigroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers are tensor product multiplicities of Weyl modules for the classical groups in the stable range. Littlewood-Richardson coefficients form a special case. Klyachko connected eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices to the saturated LR-cone and established defining linear inequalities. We prove analogues for the saturated NL-cone: an eigenvalue interpretation; a minimal list of defining linear inequalities; a description by Extended Horn inequalities, as conjectured in part II of this series; and a factorization of NL-numbers, on the boundary.

Elliptic Ruijsenaars difference operators, symmetric polynomials, and Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion rings
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 29:5 (2023) 80 • View PublicationBIB
The fusion ring for $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories is known to be isomorphic to a factor ring of the ring of symmetric polynomials presented by Schur polynomials. We introduce a deformation of this factor ring associated with eigenpolynomials for the elliptic Ruijsenaars difference operators. The corresponding Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are governed by a Pieri rule stemming from the eigenvalue equation. The orthogonality of the eigenbasis gives rise to an analog of the Verlinde formula. In the trigonometric limit, our construction recovers the refined $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring associated with the Macdonald polynomials.

Extremal rays of the equivariant Littlewood-Richardson cone
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an inductive procedure for finding the extremal rays of the equivariant Littlewood-Richardson cone, which is closely related to the solution space to S. Friedland's majorized Hermitian eigenvalue problem. In so doing, we solve the "rational version" of a problem posed by C. Robichaux, H. Yadav, and A. Yong. Our procedure is a natural extension of P. Belkale's algorithm for the classical Littlewood-Richardson cone. The main tools for accommodating the equivariant setting are certain foundational results of D. Anderson, E. Richmond, and A. Yong. We also study two families of special rays of the cone and make observations about the Hilbert basis of the associated lattice semigroup.
Schur functions in noncommuting variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other properties, Schur functions in NCSym also satisfy a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for classical Schur functions in terms of skew Schur functions. We also show how Schur functions in NCSym are related to Specht modules, and naturally refine the Rosas-Sagan Schur functions. Moreover, by generalizing Rosas-Sagan Schur functions to skew Schur functions in the natural way, we prove noncommutative analogues of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and coproduct rule for them. Finally, we relate our functions to noncommutative symmetric functions by proving a subset of our functions are natural extensions of noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, and immaculate functions indexed by integer partitions.

Shifted insertion algorithms for primed words
Published in Combinatorial Theory 3 (2023), no. 3., #14 • View PublicationBIB
This article studies some new insertion algorithms that associate pairs of shifted tableaux to finite integer sequences in which certain terms may be primed. When primes are ignored in the input word these algorithms reduce to known correspondences, namely, a shifted form of Edelman-Greene insertion, Sagan-Worley insertion, and Haiman's shifted mixed insertion. These maps have the property that when the input word varies such that one output tableau is fixed, the other output tableau ranges over all (semi)standard tableaux of a given shape with no primed diagonal entries. Our algorithms have the same feature, but now with primes allowed on the main diagonal. One application of this is to give another Littlewood-Richardson rule for products of Schur $Q$-functions. It is hoped that there will exist set-valued generalizations of our bijections that can be used to understand products of $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions.

The Stembridge Equality for Skew Stable Grothendieck Polynomials and Skew Dual Stable Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Schur polynomials $s_λ$ are essential in understanding the representation theory of the general linear group. They also describe the cohomology ring of the Grassmannians. For $ρ= (n, n-1, \dots, 1)$ a staircase shape and $μ\subseteq ρ$ a subpartition, the Stembridge equality states that $s_{ρ/μ} = s_{ρ/μ^T}$. This equality provides information about the symmetry of the cohomology ring. The stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$, and the dual stable Grothendieck polynomials $g_λ$, developed by Buch, Lam, and Pylyavskyy, are variants of the Schur polynomials and describe the $K$-theory of the Grassmannians. Using the Hopf algebra structure of the ring of symmetric functions and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule, we prove that $G_{ρ/μ} = G_{ρ/μ^T}$ and $g_{ρ/μ} = g_{ρ/μ^T}$, the analogues of the Stembridge equality for the skew stable and skew dual stable Grothendieck polynomials.
The Kostka semigroup and its Hilbert basis
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, 4:2 (2024) Article #S2R9 • View PublicationBIB
The Kostka semigroup consists of pairs of partitions with at most r parts that have positive Kostka coefficient. For this semigroup, Hilbert basis membership is an NP-complete problem. We introduce KGR graphs and conservative subtrees, through the Gale-Ryser theorem on contingency tables, as a criterion for membership. In our main application, we show that if a partition pair is in the Hilbert basis then the partitions are at most r wide. We also classify the extremal rays of the associated polyhedral cone; these rays correspond to a (strict) subset of the Hilbert basis. In an appendix, the second and third authors show that a natural extension of our main result on the Kostka semigroup cannot be extended to the Littlewood-Richardson semigroup. This furthermore gives a counterexample to a recent speculation of P. Belkale concerning the semigroup controlling nonvanishing conformal blocks.

Stretched Newell-Littlewood coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Newell-Littlewood coefficients $n_{μ,ν}^λ$ are the multiplicities occurring in the decomposition of products of universal characters of the orthogonal and symplectic groups. They may also be expressed, or even defined directly in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, $c_{μ,ν}^λ$. Both sets of coefficients have stretched forms $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ and $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$, where $tκ$ is the partition obtained by multiplying each part of the partition $κ$ by the integer $t$. It is known that $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is a polynomial in $t$ and here it is shown that $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial in $t$ with minimum quasi-period at most $2$. The evaluation of $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is effected both by deriving their generating function and by establishing a hive model analogous to that used for the calculation of $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$. These two approaches lead to a whole battery of conjectures about the nature of the quasi-polynomials $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$. These include both positivity, stability and saturation conjectures that are supported by a significant amount of data from a range of examples.

String of columns rewriting and confluence of the jeu de taquin
Schützenberger's jeu de taquin is an algorithm on the structure of tableaux, which transforms a skew tableau into a Young one by local transformation rules on the columns of the tableaux. This algorithm defines an equivalence relation on tableaux compatible with the plactic congruence, and gives a proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule on Schur polynomials. In this article, we introduce the notion of string of columns rewriting system as mechanism of transformations of glued sequences of columns. We describe the execution of the jeu de taquin algorithm as rewriting paths of a string of columns rewriting. We deduce algebraic properties on the plastic congruence and we relate the jeu de taquin to insertion algorithms on tableaux.
An equivariant quantum Pieri rule for the Grassmannian on cylindric shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian is determined by the quantum Pieri rule for multiplying by Schubert classes indexed by row or column-shaped partitions. We provide a direct equivariant generalization of Postnikov's quantum Pieri rule for the Grassmannian in terms of cylindric shapes, complementing related work of Gorbounov and Korff in quantum integrable systems. The equivariant terms in our Graham-positive rule simply encode the positions of all possible addable boxes within one cylindric skew diagram. As such, unlike the earlier equivariant quantum Pieri rule of Huang and Li and known equivariant quantum Littlewood-Richardson rules, our formula does not require any calculations in a different Grassmannian or two-step flag variety.

Newell-Littlewood numbers II: extended Horn inequalities
Published in Algebr. Comb. 5 (2022), no. 6, 1287-1297 • View PublicationBIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers $N_{μ,ν,λ}$ are tensor product multiplicities of Weyl modules for classical Lie groups, in the stable limit. For which triples of partitions $(μ,ν,λ)$ does $N_{μ,ν,λ}>0$ hold? The Littlewood-Richardson coefficient case is solved by the Horn inequalities (in work of A. Klyachko and A. Knutson-T. Tao). We extend these celebrated linear inequalities to a much larger family, suggesting a general solution.

An affine approach to Peterson comparison
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Peterson comparison formula proved by Woodward relates the three-pointed Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties to those for the complete flag. Another such comparison can be obtained by composing a combinatorial version of the Peterson isomorphism with a result of Lapointe and Morse relating quantum Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the Grassmannian to k-Schur analogs in the homology of the affine Grassmannian obtained by adding rim hooks. We show that these comparisons on quantum cohomology are equivalent, up to Postnikov's strange duality isomorphism.

Perforated Tableaux: A Combinatorial Model for Crystal Graphs in Type $A_{n-1}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a combinatorial model, called \emph{perforated tableaux}, to study $A_{n-1}$ crystals, unifying several previously studied combinatorial models. We identify nodes in the $k$-fold tensor product of the standard crystal with length $k$ words in $[n]= \{ 1, \ldots n\}$. We model this crystal with perforated tableaux (ptableaux), extending this identification isomorphically to biwords, RSK $(P,Q)$ tableaux pairs, and matrix models. In the ptableaux setting, crystal operators are more simply defined and we can identify highest weights visually without computation. We generalize the tensor products in the Littlewood-Richardson rule to all of $[n]^{\otimes k}$, and not just the irreducible crystals whose reading words come from semistandard Young tableaux. We relate evacuation (Lusztig involution) to products of ptableaux crystal operators, and find a combinatorial algorithm to compute commutators of highest weight ptableaux.
